Review: The undeniably wonderfully named Chippy Chasers label return with a neat selection of four very playable, friendly-on-the-ear cuts from four undeniably wonderful artists. Fedo's 'Tunisian Rex' leads the chage, with a solid house shuffle liberally peppered with nicely trippy effects and bonkers vocal snippets that give it heaps of personality. Andrey Djackonda & Ovil's 'Lui Lui' is a little more stripped down and a little more soulful, with an old jazz hand muttering atmosphercially on top. Legit Trip's 'Skripi Daddy' is the most loop-laden of the quartet, but its ebbing and flowing brass samples and high frequency tweaks keep it interesting, before Firesc's 'Left Or Right' closes things down with the kind of polyrhythmic funkiness and space jazz trimmings that made Cheap Records so essential back in the day. Well worth Chasing down.

Review: These tracks have received some huge hype just from the plays they have been getting from DJs luckily enough to have them. Now they finally get a vinyl pressing so the rest of us can join in the fun. First up is a three way collab between a trio of well-regarded artists in the UK drill rapper Kwengface, master bass producer Joy O and techno's Overmono. 'Freedom 2' has cut-throat rhymes and two-step garage influences with low-end subs which will destroy the club. The original version features on the flip with a less club-ready and more drill-centric sound.

Review: Objectiv returns to Flexout with a brand new single that blurs the boundary between rollage and jump-up. With the former term referring to drum & bass that keeps things on the subtler side - keeping things moving on a furtive tip rather than over-shelling or shredding via tawdry sound design - 'Seasoned' is a well-spiced fusion with the latter, which refers to a snappier form of the genre known for its 'jumpy' sound. Review: This is some serious electro that really packs a punch. It is both physical and cerebral, with as much to keep the old noggin entertained as there is for the feet and body. The EP marks a fine return to Gunfinger Food for Obzerv who offers up his first solo vinyl release with tracks taken from some of his previous live set performances. They make for pure machine funk, with tough and robotic bass and lithe synth designs from the future. This is a one-time-only press on wax, so do not sleep.

Review: Avidya is back with a third EP to build on the head-turning success of the first two and it is another trip to the outer edges of the dancefloor. Odopt from Born Free and 777 Recordings kicks off with a snappy cut that is deceptively simple but devastatingly effective with its gurgling and acidic bass. Remotif is a fast-rising talent who impresses with the heavy techno sludge of 'HAJKSD15' and Full Circle aka Alexis Le Tan and Joakim link with Kris Baha to offer a remix that is all twitchy electrons, busted drum loops and fizzing pads before 53X's 'Simulaatio' is another brilliantly loose jumbled of wiry electronics, sci-fi effects and techno chug for a fantastic closing beatdown.

Review: Fantastically frisky broken beat, jazz and ambient fusions from new Vessel signee Jacob Ohrberg, with the fresh EP 'Vinyl Vanity'. Promoted simply with the tagline "deep tracks, open minds", this one's accompanied by a pensive metatext: "vinyl and physical media represent preservation acts committed in vain... the true, ever-changing form becomes frozen, an unchangeable product which serves our vanity." Evidently not bereft of social consciousness, Ohrberg spotlights the unavoidable vanity of music releasing - the megalomania, the leveraging of identity for personal gain, the sating of an irrational need for recognition - where other artists may never dare to, for fear of coming across cynical. Ohrberg is unafraid of the pratfall of vanity, assuring us there's 'No Respite' with two ten plus minute progressions in dance-soul. No matter our reservations, our idealisations, the music will keep flowing in one way or another, whether on vinyl or another medium (provided the former is proven unsustainable in due time). The digital bonus 'The Naughty Edit' brings delicious vocal chill-light, fidgeting between piano house and soul jazz, toeing the line between them so that you're not quite sure of the track's "liveness" going in.

Review: Barna mainstay Oma Totem dishes out the cerebral and dubby like it's nobody's business; on 'The Trick', we hear three tripped-out accelerators courtesy of the Oyster Cult debutante themself, on which there's also an OK EG rework for good measure. It's a clever trick, naming your EP 'The Trick'; not least since it invites the would-be listener to listen more intently, lest they miss it - what is said "trick", dear Oma Totem? They won't answer this, much less dish out pure, wordless, implicative sonic shellage. Somewhere in the gap between the graver underside of acid trance and the equally deep lacunae of UK bass in the large, the likes of 'Choreos' and 'Mania' likewise add to the trick's wilful missive. In other words, we don't get a message from this music much as we do feel a vibe: in this sense, we're happy to miss the trick.

Review: Motor City great Omar S is not just a don when it comes to programming drums and laying down his irresistible synth lines and heart aching melodies. He can also play a wide array of instruments, and in fact does just that here as he plays all instruments played you can hear across all three cuts of this new one on his FXHE label. Things kick off with the wonderful 'Featuring Omar S (instrumental)' and then 'Sayoungaty Nig' is a hazy, lo-fi ambient sound with occasional synth smears and a barely-there rhythm implied by the odd kick drum sound. 'Featuring Omar S' is a signature deep house joint with bristling metal hi-hats, rickety drums and edgy drones that keep you on edge as more soulful chords rise up through the mix.

Review: New Omar S alert! The FXHE label boss wastes no time in dropping heat this New Year as he once again hooks up with vocalist Desire for this latest house gem. Up first is 'Something Real', in the classic Omar S mould of laying down a deep, heartfelt drum line and then topping it with a mad emotive vocal hook that is filled with r&b goodness and joined by the most subtle cosmic chord motifs. 'Hard Leaf Rag' follows next, so raw it will make your ears tickle with its busted drums and serrated stabs. Then flip it over for 'Conant Leaf Rag', which pairs warbling synth sounds with dusty hi-hats and tight kicks for a nice, full mind and body workout.

Review: It has been a rather remarkable three years since Yuko dropped its first release, but finally, they are back with more. It is co-founder Emo Omar who features both solo and in collaboration with Luje from Club Pizza while two exciting new French talents Chud and Vivant also make their mark. 'Pollen' is a bright and hooky melodic electro sound then 'You & Me' gets more percussive, with old school cow bells staying busy next to all sorts of wonky synth work. 'Tomorrow's Made Of Breaks' is built on rigid funk and trippy synth bleeps and 'Zeus' shuts down with some retro-future vocoder vocals. This is a great return from a label we hope now pushes on.

Review: Murray Clark, Chris Deverell, and Robert Ellerby have been responsible for some genuinely inspiring electronic music over the years, their instrumental approach to downtempo and avant garde synth stuff originating in and among the fertile bounty of new ideas that was the early-1990s. On Hear My Mind, the trio - AKA Opik - take us deep into their DAT archives to see what's hiding in the darkness. Two tracks, both equally stunning, 'Hear My Mind' opens the pair with a slow burning, jazz-influenced atmosphere builder, reversed-out harmony floating over stepping bass loop and distant ethereal vocals. 'Kaulsoum' goes for something even more late night and subtly euphoric, growing and developing into a bold and beautiful slice of rave-hued ambient.

Review: Ready to take a deep dive? Some long lost Orca dubs resurfaced on Deep Jungle last year and here comes the reissue. One of Kosheen co-founder Decoder's earliest projects, Orca's ripples date back to around 92 and seminal labels like Lucky Spin. Here we have a few reloads and few unreleased moments from that era. Highlights include the wonderfully rushy 'Spacetek' with its bellowing pads and springy beats and the didge-blasting wobbler 'Skylab' but the whole EP is fantastic. Have a whale of a time.

Review: Since its relaunch in 2017, Deep Jungle has been killing it by serving up previously unreleased tunes from the 90's next to represses of select rarities and new tunes in the vibe of the classic 93-96 era. Here we have Orca ensuring we all have a whale of a time (hey, hey) while lost in the precision-tooled breaks and snares, hits and lunging basslines of 'What Kind Of World.' Review: Any long-time underground devotees will know that Romania is most often associated with ornate minimal and tech but there is a sublime deep house vibe to this inaugural outing from the Chameleon label. 'Royalties' is a delightfully dreamy cut with balmy pads swirling over rubbery, rolling kicks. 'Vishwar' is another elongated and drawn-out pleasure with undulating grooves and melodies intertwining in hypnotic fashion. The epic 12-minute plus 'Royalties' (Paul Walter remix) has an upright, militant feel to the marching drums. All three of these are classy outings.

Review: The fourth chapter in Childhood Intelligence's alternate sub-division, Sunrise Inc, features five neo-braindance artifacts from Outer Order of the Planetary Instinct Alliance. These tracks feature mystic analogue rhythms and vintage sounds that blend haunted synth landscapes with Latin grooves and heavy SH101 low-end frequencies. Intimate and hypnotic melodies and voices create a homage to the past and a prophetic vision for the future and betray a producer with a great musical heritage. Review: Ovatow is one of several aliases from the DJ, producer, graphic designer and Frustrated Funk label head also known as Klen. It is one he saves for dubbed out solo experiments and this EP first dropped back in 2007. It stands up now though as a tasteful Collins of electro, dub and techno. 'Flame' kicks off with wobbly synth hooks and ice-cold analogue beats. 'Visitation Dub III' then sinks down into a moody, grainy and lo-fi world of deepest dub and 'A Thought' flips the vibe again with a bright and busy electro workout. It pairs the coldness of machine hits with the liquid soul of some lush synth melodies. Classy stuff, for sure.

Review: 'Detachment' is right, and Raymond Owen knows it. A mood of cool detachment is a crucial to most commercially viable dance records, be these under the aegises of Chicago house or dub techno. Bringing his craft to the Non Stop Rhythm sublabel Indulgence, Owen's untrammelled and tricky dance sound brings a sense of mechanistic drive and prosthetic modular weight to the floor, suggesting music for cyborgs with detachable limbs and affects (ahem, hence the name). The remixes on the B are especially cool and unreactive, as both AFN and Chieu Hoi respectively, progressively pare back the mix as thought they were the utmost cold, utmost sheer expositors of a minimal house hullabaloo.

Review: When Robert Owens and Glenn Underground appear on the same record, you just know the results will be magic. They are both long-standing titans of the house scene, especially Chicago, with impossibly soulful sounds. This reissue of their timeless 'Tonight' is a real heartmelter. It has lush, soft focus chords draped over cuddly and deep drums, sustained pads bring that sense of cosmic infinity and of course the smoky tones of Owens layering in the human emotion that makes this one so irresistible.

Review: When love drives us wild - perhaps one too many cocoons in our stomachs have hatched as butterflies, leading to an over-excitation of winged beats - a paradoxical sense of undomesticated entrapment may follow. Whether or not our love is acted upon or returned, the fear is that the feeling will never go away, that we have been irreversibly rewilded, and that the mere mention of the person wall never fail to stir us. Kilque nailed the flooding feeling with 'I Can't Shake This Feeling' in 1982, where the motivic repetition of the chorus line "...must be love" added extra poignancy to the word "burden" to describe a song's hook. Now UK production talents U Key and Omar wax the tune extra weightily, lighting a cogno-scented candle of full-boded electro disco, eliciting strange, fatuous sensations in proximate suitors. The track boasts a full live brass and string sections, uniting Japanese and Bostonian talents; it also features Curtis Williams of Kool & The Gang on alto, while Oberheim and Moog add a modern electronic spice. Young Pulse's remix marks a sensorial broken-beat easer-upper on the B, with its foolhardy breakdowns and Rhodesy downturns.

Review: CULTED return in trademark force with five wild psych-bangers from luminaries Simple Symmetry, Thomass Jackson, Orchid, Ayala, and Multi Culti boss Thomas Von Party teamed up with Oltrefuturo. A sense of weirdness exudes from these tunes, refusing the common pitfalls of twee chord progressions or underproduction hidden behind rawness; these ones are as high-qual, watery, poured-over as can be, yet also bring with them a real sense of exploration and eccentricity of mood. The utmost case in point is Thomas Van Party & Oltrefuturo's 'Kookoo', a chugging machine-elven carnival of doffed conical hats and gated cute vocals.

Review: Future Romance's Collector II release is a futuristic trek into through the realms of melodic trance and techno, featuring four melodic tracks by different distinct artists. On the flip side, Drumcomplex & Frank Sonic's 'Ultra Hex' offers celestial-sounding techno that builds euphorically. Closing the EP, Off Night's 'Definition' presents the most peak-time trance track, with epic and big-sounding elements. Review: A rather calming lovers rock track reissued on 12". When reggae drummer Lindel Lewis teamed up with singers Vincent Taylor and Claudia, few could anticipate the sonic romance that would blossom. 'You, Me & He' seems to capture two such triangulations, one lying at the heart of the real collaboration between artists, and the other evoked in the imaginary love tryst explored in the song. Wafty reverb vocals from the sweetly voiced Claudia give an admissive, coy impression of the persona she channels, which is lent a soothing antiphony from Taylor. Lewis, meanwhile, evidences his solo drumming and dubbing chops on the smooth 'Me & He' versions under the name One Man Band, twinning coldness and haziness.

Review: The seventh V/A release on Mary Yuzovskaya's Monday Off imprint lands on vinyl, with Viels, ORBE, D-Leria, and Yuzovskaya all contributing tracks. Each artist lending their tender efforts to a mutant techno march, Viels' 'Nero' and Orbe's 'Rigging' provide strong titular clues as to their muses; the first uses both the Latin word for "black" and the name of an ancient Roman emperor, suggesting might, militancy and nyctalopic mis-seeing in its dispatch of a blind sonic firestorm; the latter likens production to construction, with its central, low-sined wayfinder sound effect, and dusty hi-hat caroms, suggesting some vessels have windshields that truly can brave the storm. Yuzovskaya's 'Trouble' lands us in hot water, with its startled, far-off vocal snippets and knockout prattles in the left and right lobes; then there's B-leria's closer 'Battito', a living, breathing planetary entity, prone to emit eerily harmonic Close Encounters-style tones and whose atmosphere we dare not cross.

Review: The glorious Dobro label gets to double figures in fine style here with a new album that finds Iner both going solo and collaborating with Oiuna on four new cuts which then get remixed. The originals are summery, airy, organic worlds of gentle deep house rhythms, feathery synth melodies and gentle hooks that have a subtle future feel. The remixes rework the tunes for more direct vibes in the club with Frank Music label head Johannes Albert going first and then Crowd Control also stepping up. Great artwork, too.

Review: For well over a decade, Italian producer, electronic musician and sound designer Ocralab (real name Rocco Biscione) has been serving up immersive and enveloping ambient soundscapes, most of which tend towards the meditative and subtly sun-kissed. That's the trademark sound that he explores on gorgeous new full-length Locus Impervio, a set whose gently rising and falling melodic motifs, calming soundscapes and spacey sounds recall the halcyon days of ambient music in the mid-to-late 1990s. It's a genuinely gorgeous, soul-enriching set all told - the kind of thing we might have expected Pete Namlook, Jonah Sharp, Move D and Mixmaster Morris to put out circa 1994 (albeit with subtle nods to more contemporary, sound design-driven academic ambient releases).

Review: Back in 1996, on the back of years spent showcasing skills on NYC's hip-hop underground, mic man Omniscence completed his debut album, The Raw Factor, with producers Fanatic and (more surprisingly) deep house great Rheji Burrell. Sadly, it was never issued, and it would be nearly a decade before he put out a full-length excursion, The God Hour. Described as "one of the great lost rap albums of the 90s", The Raw Factor is now finally out on CD - almost three decades after Omniscence started work on it. For those who love "golden era hip-hop", with its killer grooves and choice use of killer samples, it's a must-check set, with Omniscence's on-point raps - delivered smoothly, with a distinctively gruff flow - keeping you captivated throughout.
