Review: Its not like Metalheadz have ever been away, but it feels like the label has been working with a renewed creative vigour in 2014. Fresh off dropping the excellent Ulterior Motive LP, Metalheadz switch it back to matters of a 12" nature with this killer double upper cut of moody rollers from crew members Arp XP, Nitri and HLZ on the METHXX series. Up top Arp XP & HLZ collaborate on the prime slab of 97 style D &B that is "Good Old Days" watch out for that ghostly saxophone wedged deep beneath the finely cut drum edits and twisting bass. Down below HLZ goes solo on the agro "Gaia", a cut where the drums are rolled so tight you can feel the tension almost snapping, whilst classic jungle flavours abound on release highlight "Makes Me Wonder" from Arp XP and Nitri!

"Invasion" is an unashamed bass blunderbuss with an ADD-affected bassline that answers its own questions before it even asks them. "Prison", meanwhile, is an undiluted gritty doomstepper. A collaboration with long-time Naibu confident Key, technically it's drumstep but it's so removed from the screaming bro-downs that the tag is associated with, it almost feels dirty describing it in such a way.

Review: Eveson is back! Having a taken a break after his incredible debut album (to run a D&B night in The Alps by all accounts) he's casually re-inserted himself into the scene with the soul and grace we've always known him for. "Grey Dawn" is a widescreen narrative penned with Ivy Lab's Halogenix. Sporting a soft-focus soul vocal, spacious beats and a mournful reverse synth texture, it's an emotional moment of genuinely deep D&B. "Dystopian Romance", meanwhile, is a much brighter, breezier affair with skippy breakbeats and a series of rich searing Reeces oozing out beneath the dreamy synths. Both are a kindly reminder of Eveson's unique signature. Thankfully there's a lot more to come.

"True" takes a steppier riddim, giving it a much more angular edge. Peppered with all manner of processed glitches and processed digital squiggles, it's yet another immaculate otherworldly audio adventure from Horizons.

Review: Not content with serving up one of this year's best LP length examples of electronic music fusionism as part of Ivy Lab, Laurence Reading has also made great strides with his solo output as Halogenix. After a continual stream of Halogenix 12"s for the likes of Critical and Dispatch, Reading landed on Metalheadz earlier this year with All Blue, a four track single that felt right at home on the label. The relationship between Halogenix and Metalheadz is strengthened further as he goes toe to toe with Goldie on this Broken Man 12". Up top is the Goldie's pensive original, with the production clearly presented as the musical backdrop for those mournful vocals. For the remix Halogenix plays on this mood, yet teases a bit more of a dancefloor vibe out of the track.
