Deep Dark & Dangerous Trilogy Pt 2: Dark

Enigma Dubz - "Exosphere" (4:35)
Pushloop - "Age Of Fear" (3:17)
Truth - "Show Dem" (3:57)
Khiva - "Flight Club" (3:45)
Review: Having already offered up the first part of their 50th release trilogy, the Deep Dark & Dangerous crew slams down volume two. While its predecessor focused on undeniably deep cuts, this edition is all about aural darkness. Enigma Dubz gets things going in fine style via the slow-spaced out riddims, creepy sub-bass and clandestine electroic motifs of "Exosphere", before Pushloop reaches for oddball sci-fi vocal samples, punishing wobble-bass and maniacal laughter on "Age Of Fear". Truth weighs in with the bleeping, slow-stepping haziness and bowel-bothering bass of "Show Dem", while Khiva opts for a vibrating sub-bassline, metallic hits and tons of ricocheting effects on closing cut "Flight Club".

Bat Country (3:16)
Yucatan (4:00)
Apogee (3:30)
Review: Bristol buds Glume & Phossa link up once again for another superb collab collection. This time on Encrypted, it's another trippy hat trick. "Bat Country" kicks off with a sense of cosmicity that gets deeper as the track begins to open up into an awesome sample you and your dad will recognise. Gradually upping the strange as the EP develops, "Yucatan" gets all Halloweeny with its arpeggio and strange warped keys while "Apogee" flips out in a ping-pong frenzy with layers of pipes and chimes which all double up in a really interesting and surprising way. Batty... In the best possible way.

Sir Hiss - "Casablanca" (4:10)
Dr Hugo - "Nightfall" (5:35)
Polonis - "N" (3:44)
JFO - "Tell Dem" (4:12)
Filthy Gears - "Filthy Sax" (5:06)
Review: Prime instrumental grime from the mysterious and fledgling Dream Eater crew. Once again it's a broadsword swathe across the beat spectrum. JT goes Oriental with his staccato "Blizzard" while Sir Hiss looks to LA for inspiration with his string sweeping "Casablanca", Dr Hugo bakes up a devilish sine wobble on "Nightfall", Polonis's "N" takes us right back to 2002 with its militant snare hits and fat cold bass riff while Southpoint affiliate JFO sharpens up a crucial two-step on "Tell Dem". Finally Filthy Gears gets tasty with a classic horn sample on "Filthy Sax." So on point they're edible, it's time to chow down.

Kromestar - "Dancehall" (4:41)
P JAM & DOK - "Funky Nandos" (4:13)
Review: From cor blimey to core nuclear reactor; Mean Streets continue their Trilogy collection with a second volume of gully comprising two more vibes from the left side. Donnie Kromestar starts the skirmish with his devastating heavyweight bash-about 'Dancehall' while P Jam & Dok flip the experience in the B with 'Funky Nandos'. A springy slice of broken beat with jazzy shimmers and cheery organs, it takes you back to Plastic People even if you didn't get to go there back in the day. Street talk.

Yrs Ago (6:50)
Animus (4:59)
Review: Callum "Paleman" Lee is one of Swamp 81's most decorated artists, having released a string of well-regarded 12" singles for the hyped, bass-obsessed imprint. Yrs Ago is his third EP for the label's 81 offshoot, and sees him joining the dots between techno, post-dubstep bass music, and angular electronica. The title track sets the tone, with robotic voices, creepy electronics and smooth sub-bass riding a metallic, broken techno groove. Flipside "Animus" is a marginally more melodic affair, with spacey chords and bubbling arpeggio lines riding a punchy electro rhythm. Both tracks are naturally rather heavy, and undoubtedly amongst the producer's strongest work to date.

Alix Perez - "VTRN" (5:01)
Hijinx - "Shush" (3:56)
EBB - "Ill Rest" (5:07)
Epoch - "Beastmode" (4:35)
Review: Codex is a brand new various artists series from 1985 Music. The opening four tracker features esteemed label boss Alix Perez alongside crucial bass craftsmen Hijinx, Epoch and Ebb. It is Perez himself who opens the proceedings with earth shattering bass quakes and drilling synths on 'VTRN' before Hijinx explores a wide open and cavernous underground space detailed with ticking hits and warped synth reverberations. EBB's 'Ill Rest' is another masterfully deep dubstep wobbler with a signature saw both synth ripping up the groove and Epoch's 'Beastmode' is a bustling, bristling joint that keeps you on your toes.

Aye Aye (4:59)
Review: Longstanding dub reppers Infernal Sounds shred into 2016 with a brand new label. If you've followed their unfettered support for authentic dubstep, you'll already know how much of a big deal this is. Kicking off with New Zealand duo Perverse, both sides rumble with class; "IO" is laced with trippy percussive ricochets and a stately amphibious warble while "Aye Aye" is a sludgier, unhurried pensive construction full of dark drama. From the packaging to the sounds; you know Infernal have spent a long time planning this label debut... And they're likely to have spent even longer planning the oncoming release-assault.

Phrex - "Drumworks"
Cutkachi - "Moonlight"
Review: Swiss city Berne may not be the first mainland European city you think of when someone throws the question "Name a hotspot for experimental bass music?" at you, but the city's newly established RE:ST label aim to change that. Founded by some of the people responsible for bringing the best of Bass music to Berne, the debut RE:ST release offers a platform for local talent Phrex and Cutkachi to shine and they certainly do, manning a side each and bringing their own distinct takes on club music between the 128-140 BPM range. Phrex leads the way with a killer exercise in fx laden sub heavy polyrhythms that wouldn't sound out of place on Deep Medi. The B Side veers into the grey zone between bass music and techno as Cutkachi flexes his 4/4 muscles with the stuttering late night deepness of "Moonlight".

As always, it's adorned with the label's usual detail-rich art and powered by innovative compositions. From the savage, break-choking Reinforced hymn "Perpetual Motion" and the dubby Zed Bias-style garage soul of "Poor Man Style" by way of Future Cuts style hurricane soul "Shifted Feelings" and the SUAD-schooled hardcore "94", no expense has been spared as the last 26 years of rave are tied together with true craft.

Acid Storm (4:23)
Acid Storm (Year 3000 Style) (4:03)
Review: Soundsystem legend Mark Iration links up with new school stepper and producer Adam Prescott for this standout single on Zamzam. Following up Prescott's last single 'Fear' with Macka B in 2017 - and the most recent documentary on Iration Steppas by Dubquake Records - comes this first single on vinyl in 5 years, since the latter artist's mega limited wax on Dub-Stuy. 'Acid Storm' is a rough dubsteppers' honker, as fitting for any tatted-up DJ's DMZ set as it is for sub-hugging at Leeds' West Indian Centre. Glitching piano stabs separate this one from the rest, and herald the B-side: 'Year3000 Style' stomps away even harder, zooming in on that snare's insane spring delay.

Track 4 (5:53)
Review: Newcomer Primer crash lands onto planet Rarefied with four beguiling fusions. "Tal" is an off-beat mystic brew that flexes in and out of an Indian vocal with mesmerising effect, "Signals" rolls off a slippery electroid drum arrangement with just the right levels of cosmicity while "Make Contact" is a cascade of chimes and a lush loosely hewn two-step. An untitled track closes the show with an overwhelming hurricane of reverse textures and sludgy drama. Connection made.

Tal (part 2) (4:18)
I Had A Faraway Dream (4:16)
Review: Following their beguiling "Signals" EP, enigmatic Primer returns to Rarefied with four more trips. With its desert sand storm textures and staccato vocal clip, "Nowhere And Nothing" isn't quite as bleak as it sounds, it's actually super warm and intense. The same can be said for "Drowned"; while sombre and introspective, the dub sounds and elements are buoyant and eventually rise into something pretty hopeful after the second drop. "Tal (part 2)" provides closure for those of us who are still nursing sore minds from "Tal (part 1)" on Primer's debut release as it uses the same mystic elements to wind down the chaos into a subtle woozy brew. Speaking of woozy, "I Had A Faraway Dream" brings us back home with a beautifully sleepy harp, stumbling kicks and a vocal that seems to melt into itself. Singular. No one's doing it like Primer.

Saule - "Backwards" (4:40)
Review: The latest missive on Joe Nice's North Carolina-based Gourmet Beats stable brings together label regular (and frequent collaborator) Saule and fellow Subaltern Records artist Prism. On the A-side you'll find the EP's joint sole production, "Grow Stronger" - a punishing affair that flits between passages of gentle, soul-fired beauty and floor-focused sections where punchy drums and fuzzy, razor-sharp sub-bass dominate. On the flip, both producers go solo. First, Prism serves up a mangled but attractive deep dubstep roller built around distorted drum hits and creepy bells, before Saule goes even deeper via the ricocheting percussion hits, rumbling bass and horizontal, near ambient electronics of "Backwards".

Review: Dial 'D' for dank. Estonian area code crew the 372 return with the second slab of homegrown beats. PTF1987 takes the lead with mystical strings, sudden glitches and crispy beats before Q100 & DMG provide the most leftfield funk jam of the set in the form of the schizoid, bell-chiming oddity "OddBells". Meanwhile on the B, Bisweed brings the darkness on the super-spacious "Akhinea", all warped finger clicks and cyborg funk, while Slin slides down the curtains with a percussive head-twister as rolling sticks start to intertwine with the bass like some possessed puppeteer. 372... You know what to do.

Review: Returning to Melbourne based Modern Hypnosis is local DJ Adam Dickson aka Pugilist with some frantic and hyper aware bass assaults - Aussie style! This follows up some terrific releases in recent times on Navy Cuts, Artikal Music and Green King Cuts. On the A side, we have the entrancing polyrhythmic workout of "Cha" which is geared for some deep meditation on the dancefloor, guaranteed. On the flip is the modern jungle deconstruction of "Syncopate" which builds the tension and suspense with its intricate riddims and rolling bassline.

Review: With strong stripes from hosting some of Melbourne's most on-point system parties, Modern Hypnosis level up to label territory with this powerful double-A from New Zealand's Pugilist. "Dream State" sits somewhere between UKG, deep house and dub with its breezy pads, rolling 140 momentum, swinging step and purring subs while the 125-style "Simian" is an 81-esque fusion of minimal, tribal breakbeats, groaning depth plunges and far-away alien textures. It's been a strong year for Pugilist post-Perverse, the honour of launching this exciting new label is yet another impressive reminder why.

Review: Following last year's "Raindance" EP, ex-Perverse man Pugilist returns with three more vital dubstep constructs. "Saturn" runs rings around the dance with its 'come in' vocal loop and machine flexed drums while "Outback" deep throats a 23rd century didgeridoo with impeccable bounce attitude. Finally "Solaris" closes the show with the highlight of the EP; a two-steppy space shuffler with a rolling break that's so overwhelmingly insistent it's physical. Benchmark business.

Unhurried and machine-like in its plough-like nature, as the mid-point hits we hear the hypnotic sounds of the chimes that gradually takeover the trip with more and more intensity. 'Kindred' on the B, meanwhile, rolls with much more of a deep garage, bubbly dub feel. As always with Pugilist, both hit hard. Limited to 300 copies.

Review: In the words of Mystik himself... This has been a long time coming. The shimmering chords and heavy rolls of "Misty In Roots" were written between the two antipodean modern day dub dons years ago but it's remained on dub until now. It's back by two more heavy system testers; "Sabu" takes a deep breath before coiling up with percussion then springing into action when the kicks skip in. "2 Steps Backwards" takes more of a trad dub stance with swaggering spaced out beats and a delicious array of old school FX work in the mix. Misty in roots; clear in message.

Review: Last spotted exploring the halftime swamps, ex-Perverse member Pugilist makes his debut on J.Sparrow's smoking Navy Cut imprint. Once again he paints three distinct and diverse pictures. "Zulu Blues" (with Mystik) builds up from the roots as a heavy dub groove with precision space and weight while "True King" takes us much deeper into the chamber with a soft kick and heavier emphasis on the atmospheres. We conclude on the slippery technoid funk of "Conduit" that could easily take up residence in Detroit. Stunning.

Review: One riddim track, three hugely distinctive voices; Dub-Stuy continue their riddim series with "Santa Muerte Riddim". Loose, spacious, mystic and led by cold steel string twangs, Jonah Freed's beat sings on its own merits but each vocalist adds their own touch. Rider Shafique takes the lead with his signature smoky tones and poetics, Jahdan Blakkamoore contrasts between his gravelly spoken word and musicality on the chorus before Pupajim lets the beat breathe a little more before going full harmonic ham. Holy moly.

Primer - "Signals" (Crypticz remix) (4:33)
Review: It's the release that recently moved Skream to tweet he'll make 140 music again, Rarefied dig deep back over the vaults for their first remix release. First up is the Skream co-signed remix of T. A. R.'s "Amplivagant" in which Navy Cut captain J.Sparrow flips the bassline into a steamroller of a mix where the groove has a technoid mind of its own and the demolished results speak for themselves. Flip for Crypticz twist on Primer's "Signals". Switching out the skittering two-steps for ghostly amen echoes while keeping the tone and vibe just as eerie and haunted, it's another remarkable remix. Absolute solid gold.

Review: Tempa continue to chisel away at the bass coal face in their own unique and ultimately deep way. For "Allstars 7" they've struck some serious gold... Blisteringly hot Wen serves up a blisteringly cold roller, all bubbly drums and iced-out synths, Manchester man Alex Coulton taps into the deep tribal dub psyche with his hand drum-heavy "Equilibrium", Innasound get deep on a meditative flex, Batu gets jiggy on a steppy, jaunty trip, Axh unleashes a post-dungeon stepper with a swift and uncompromising rhythm pattern and Perverse bring us to a stark, spaced out climax with the trippy "Jacobin". Four awesome examples of future-focussed bass music, Tempa have delivered a very special document right here.

Review: It's nearly three years since Bristol-based dubstep explorer Phaeleh released his debut album, the decidedly deep and murky Fallen Light. On this second full-length, he switches his attentions to the more accessible, downtempo-influenced end of the genre, matching his ever-present low-end heaviness with intricate melodies, breezy atmospherics, and woozy, trip-hop style female vocals. For the most part, it's a formula that hits the spot, with stand out tracks "Here Comes The Sun" and "Whistling In The Dark" offering a contemporary take on '90s trip-hop. Best of all, though, is the beatless title track, which is little more than a powerfully emotional exercise in sublime piano playing.
