Review: This EP is the first collaborative work by Andrea Belfi and Jules Reidy. Berlin-based and hailing from Italy and Australia respectively, the duo blends compositional precision with improvisational freedom. During a residency at Berlin's Callie's-a 19th-century factory turned arts space-they and engineer Marco Anulli crafted four expansive tracks in which Belfi's masterful drumming interlaces with Reidy's shimmering guitars and electronic textures. The opener layers just-intoned guitar figures over delicate brushwork and climaxes with a synthetic surge and tracks like 'Oben' and 'Alto' explore shifting grooves, propulsive rhythms and dynamic soundscapes.

Review: In December 2001, at Maida Vale Studios, Bill Callahan's Smog delivered a raw, haunting session for the BBC. Alongside bandmates Jessica Billey, Mike Saenz and Jim White, Callahan's performance embodied a Lynchian mood of U.S. darkness in the wake of 9/11, covering Stevie Nicks, Lou Reed, and Smog tracks with a sombre, tour-worn edge. Callahan reflects, "It's all live, no overdubs. The session felt encapsulatedisomething foreign, yet intimate." The band's reimagining of 'Beautiful Child' in a minor key, the fiery rendition of 'Cold Discovery', and the moving take on 'Jesus' highlight the raw, unfiltered essence of this live recording.

Review: Singer, songwriter, former Navy sailor and Oklahoma native Zach Bryan first rose to fame in 2019 with his self-released debut country album DeAnn. Bryan's raw storytelling approach attracted a dedicated following, justifying many follow-ups - his latest EP Summertime Blues included. Something of a sibling piece to the recent album American Heartbreak, the EP deploys sweet vocal lilts, banjo strums and fiddle bowings to channels many brooding, blue-collar emotions, reflecting lives lived on the road and bittersweet days gone by.

Review: This wonderful album delivers a tight, vibing collection of traditional old-time Appalachian music. Featuring Liam Grant on guitar, Grayson McGuire on fiddle and Devon Flaherty on banjo and guitar, this debut recording brims with raw, authentic talent. It was recorded straight to cassette with no overdubs and despite the carefree atmosphere, the trio expertly channels the spirit of old-time music. Tracks like 'Dry and Dusty' and 'Taner's Farm' reflect their playful yet poignant approach by blending upbeat melodies with deeper themes of rural life and hard times. This one is a real charmer.

Review: So what happens when a European post-punk outfit meets an American 'ambient country ensemble'? The answer: A Nanocluster. In fact, three. This being the third. Immersion first met SUSS in September 2021, and the results were mesmerising. Three years on and the impact was no less staggering. Originally landing in September 2024, part tres takes us into the kind of musical places we're used to finding Spiritualized or Mogwai, and even then the references are misleading. For as many times as Nanocluster Vol. 3 sucks us into a thick soup of ambient and atmosphere, inviting us to get lost in opiate cloud formations, it also asks us to jump on board a stream train of rolling and driving rhythms, juggernauts gathering depth and complexity as they forge ahead. A stunning collection of highly evocative and incredible musical instrumentals.

Review: Searows is the moniker of Alec Duckart, a Portland-based indie folk star who is signed to Matt Maltese's label Last Recordings On Earth. Searows is influenced by the likes of Sufjan Stevens, Bon Iver and Iron & Wine and his falsetto has a similar power and timbre to that of his formative influences. Opening track 'Martingale' is beautifully stripped down and pulls you as a listener close to his soul. Meanwhile, on 'To Be Seen' Searows comes across like he's lamenting the death of something and it is a proper tear-jerker. Contrastingly, 'Toothache' is brighter with percussion and delay-laden electric guitar showing his talent for rich, lush arrangements. Matt Maltese has struck gold here by signing Searows. Plus, they're well-suited as they each appear to enjoy delving into post-apocalyptic work. Searows' previous release (on the Last Recordings On Earth label) is called End Of The World and before starting this label, Maltese released his hit single as a solo artist: 'As The World Caves In'. They suit it all so well.

I Look After You (3:25)
Review: American indie folk artist Joan Shelley returns with Mood Ring, an emo-chromic new record. Celebrated for her soft and folky sound, Shelley's latest follows 2020's The Spur, which did develop one of her many MOs: to orchestrally augment Americana music. Yet it lacked much of the stylistic variation on display here on Mood Ring, which flaunts the breadth of her talent through chambered, variably galvanic songs. A curious formal exercise, too, the record is an LP but contains nothing on the B-side, sparing the listener the unseemly chore of having to flip it over. This is as much an "ahh"-inducing record as can be, then, with 'Fire Of The Morning' restoring the listener to health after, the lyrics attest, singeing our ears in an allegorical housefire; and 'I Look After You' concluding things on a blue, cushioned vocal ostinato.

Johnny Appleseed (4:06)
At The Border, Guy (7:02)
Review: Joe Strummer & the Mescaleros' 'Johnny Appleseed,' now released on 45 rpm, is a standout track that blends Strummer's punk roots with a newfound warmth. The song opens with a soft acoustic guitar and evolves into a vibrant mix of shimmery organs, sprightly mandolins, and a rousing chorus. Unlike the raw energy of Strummer's Clash days, this track exudes a sunny, campfire vibe. Lyrically, Strummer's incisive commentary remains sharp. Lines like "if you're after getting the honey / then you don't go killing all the bees" and the poignant "Look there goes / Martin Luther King / notice how the door closes / when the chimes of freedom ring" showcase his enduring humanist spirit. The choruses, filled with joyous singalongs, transform the song's underlying grimness into an uplifting celebration of solidarity. 'Johnny Appleseed' masterfully marries Strummer's past and present, making it a compelling and joyful listen.

Review: While Wilco has often regarded EPs as secondary offerings, their latest release, 'Hot Sun Cool Shroud', defies that trend by presenting a cohesive artistic statement reminiscent of a full album. Unlike previous EPs, which were typically promotional in nature, this six-song collection embraces the format's potential, showcasing the band's versatility and depth. The opener, 'Hot Sun', blends sensations of pleasure and existential anxiety, as Jeff Tweedy questions his role in the face of climate change. Each track feels intentional, flowing smoothly into the next while exploring various facets of the band's identity. The two-part structure features instrumental pieces that punctuate the vocal tracks, showcasing a mix of melody and dissonance that reflects their eclectic sound. From the reflective 'Ice Cream' to the energetic chaos of 'Inside the Bell Bones', Wilco exhibits an impressive range, seamlessly blending elements of rock, country and experimentation. 'Hot Sun Cool Shroud' not only stands as a remarkable addition to their discography but also redefines the possibilities of the EP format in their artistic journey.

Cellar Door (Spiritbox Cover) (2:28)
Review: Chelsea Wolfe's latest album, She Reaches Out to She Reaches Out to She, is a haunting and emotionally charged masterpiece. Known for her shadowy blend of Gothic industrial, doom, and folk, Wolfe delves deeper into electronic soundscapes with this release, while maintaining her trademark dark, atmospheric style. The album explores themes of severing toxic ties and the cyclical nature of grief and healing. With ten tracks that seamlessly blend industrial textures, eerie vocals and ambient layers, it's an immersive journey from start to finish. Tracks include the opener 'Whispers in the Echo Chamber', where Wolfe's hushed vocals and industrial beats create a brooding atmosphere, and 'Everything Turns Blue', a track full of lyrical power and electronic drive. The closer 'Dusk' is a breathtaking finale with a casual yet explosive climax. While the middle sectionifeaturing 'The Liminal', 'Eyes Like Nightshade' and 'Salt'islows the album slightly, their deep atmosphere still shines. Other highlights like 'House of Self-Undoing' and 'Unseen World' elevate the record to new heights with their driving rhythms and haunting melodies. Overall, this is a powerful, deeply personal album that fans of darkwave, industrial, and ambient metal will adore.

Review: Brooklyn-based Pakistani vocalist Aroof Aftab presents her third studio album, and a record that has the power to transport listeners pretty much anywhere. While steeped in traditions stereotypically associated with her homeland, ears more attuned will quickly pick up on just how divergent this is. Whether you'd consider it a classical album is down to how you gauge that genre term, we'd say it has grown broad enough over the past century to definitely include this, but ultimately even that seems reductive.

Elements of poetry, ambient trance, jazz, minimalism, and new age, it's a spiritual and musical experience based around themes of discovery, loss, memory, and intimate connections with the Earth. Sonically, that translates as something that's at once sublime and yet also surprising, combining a multitude of influences from aeons of songwriting to create something that could not have existed in any previous era.

Review: Al-Qasar deliver their unique debut album for WeWantSounds, exothermically reacting psych rock, pop and regional Sahel sounds. The five-piece band dropped their debut album Who Are We? for Glitterbeat in 2022, marking a potent Arabic and Middle Eastern psych rock inflection, where elements such as North African trance music were helped along their way in the form of continual reintroductions to Western ears. Characterised as "Arabian fuzz" by the band, their sound now hears a metempsychotic rebirth: this album was again recorded in both Europe and Africa, and, unlike their debut's Western collaborators (Lee Ranaldo of Sonic Youth, Jello Biafra of Dead Kennedys), focuses on bustling rhythms lent by North African musicians such as Alsarah, Check Tidiane Seck and Sami Galbi.

Review: Altin Gun has a famously recognisable sound and it is once again laid bare heart for all to enjoy. This new album is a triumphant return for the much-loved sextet from Amsterdam and one that is high on energy levels throughout. Though familiar in that way, this Ask album finds the band ditching some of their synth-drenched former sounds and 80s and 90s pop leanings to return to their 70s Anatolian funk of their roots. It almost sounds like a live album such is the hustle and bustle of the music with the results sounding all the more warm and welcoming.

Review: We are extremely thankful of the existence of Altin Gun, a Dutch band who focus their efforts on playing Turkish folk/psychedelic rock. Three albums so far have served to establish their sprawling sound. Their latest, Ask, does particularly well to chuck additional funk and disco edges into the mix - but contemporaneously comes On, a reissue of their debut LP released in 2018. In reissuing it, French label Le Vinyl Club document the band's eureka moment and subsequent splash onto the scene that eventually won them a Grammy. Beautiful cuts such as 'Goca Dunya' hear well-polished takes on trad Turkish folk, but with an added energy and verve brought to the fore by not only an electrifying backing band, but a whopping two vocalists, Merve Dasdemir and Erdinc Ecevit Yildiz.

Review: Amen Dunes' Death Jokes represents a departure from Damon McMahon's previous work, as he delves into electronic music while critiquing American culture's glorification of violence and coercion. Inspired by his experiences and the societal shifts of recent years, McMahon embraces new artistic avenues, incorporating piano and electronic elements into his music. The album's genesis traces back to McMahon's decision to become a beginner again, immersing himself in piano and electronic music. This newfound experimentation, coupled with a thematic shift towards critiquing societal norms, gives rise to an album that feels both raw and prophetic. Songs like 'Round the World' and 'I Don't Mind' seem to anticipate the pandemic's effects, offering haunting reflections on the world's uncertainties. McMahon's collaborations with musicians like Sam Wilkes, Christoffer Berg, and Kwake Bass add depth to the album's sonic landscape. Death Jokes is a collage of samples, incorporating voices, music, and sounds from various sources, including YouTube and historical recordings. Through these diverse elements, McMahon constructs a narrative that examines America's culture of violence and individualism. Yet amidst the darkness, there are glimpses of hope and forgiveness. Tracks like 'Mary Anne' and 'Purple Land' explore themes of innocence, forgiveness, and the passage of time. The album culminates in gospel-infused songs that mourn societal divisions while yearning for spiritual connection. In its entirety, Death Jokes serves as an essay on the complexities of life and society, offering both critique and introspection. Through his music, McMahon challenges listeners to confront uncomfortable truths while holding onto hope for a better future.

Remastered and restored, this 2-LP set, available for the first time on fruit punch vinyl, includes classic hits like 'Sister Golden Hair', 'A Horse With No Name', and 'Ventura Highway.' Previously an exclusive Record Store Day release, this album offers a unique glimpse into America’s peak era, featuring the original trio—Dewey Bunnell, Gerry Beckley, and Dan Peek. The performance was part of a successful tour promoting their fifth album, Hearts, which included their number one single, 'Sister Golden Hair'. Dewey Bunnell reflects on the significance of the show, praising the collaboration with Martin and the band's high energy during the performance. Gerry Beckley and Bunnell both express excitement about the release, marking it as a significant addition to their legacy.

Review: Sam Amidon's new album is a mesmerising exploration of folk traditions, reimagined with contemporary textures and adventurous instrumentation. Collaborating with saxophonist/producer Sam Gendel and percussionist Philippe Melanson, Amidon breathes new life into ten collected songs, from the Appalachian ballad 'Golden Willow Tree' to a radically transformed version of Lou Reed's 'Big Sky'. Recorded as a trio in Gendel's Los Angeles home, the album intertwines acoustic folk with avant-garde electronic flourishes, creating a soundscape that's both timeless and groundbreaking. Standout tracks include the lead single 'I'm On My Journey Home', where Amidon's rediscovery of a loose swing in early 20th-century recordings inspires a lush, layered rendition that sets the tone for the album. The trio's rendition of Ornette Coleman's 'Friends And Neighbors' bursts with joyful communality, while 'Old Churchyard', reimagined as 'Three Five', pairs electronic layers with rhythms to evoke a redemptive atmosphere. With influences ranging from Arthur Russell to shape-note singing, this album exemplifies Amidon's quest to recontextualise folk music, offering an inventive and heartfelt homage to its enduring resonance.

Review: Mayra Andrade's live album, recorded at Union Chapel, features the warmth and eclecticism of her music in an intimate setting. Known for blending Cape Verdean Creole, English, and Portuguese in her songs, she pulls from a variety of cultural influences to craft a sound that's truly global. Her live collaboration with guitarist Djodje Almeida, 'reEncanto,' takes listeners on a journey through her discographyifrom Navega (2006) to Manga (2019).Andrade's music dances between traditional Cape Verdean rhythms and contemporary beats, with touches of reggae, African soul and pop influences, making every performance feel both rooted and adventurous. Her voice, full of depth and color, effortlessly shifts between romantic ballads and playful, rhythmic tunes. A nomadic spirit is evident in her music as she reflects her life's experiences and travels. On stage, Andrade is stunning, and the energy she brings in this live recording transports listeners straight to Cape Verde's sun-drenched shores. For those unfamiliar with her work, this album is an ideal introduction to the vibrant, evolving world she's built through her music, full of passion and heartfelt storytelling.

Review: The duo of Angus & Julia Stone share their sixth full-length album, Cape Forestier. A strikingly poignant and textured set of new recordings, the new LP immediately draws listeners into the simple and endearing vision of Angus and Julia Stone's world; this is a cloaked, atmopsheric Aussie folk album that flaunts the couple's talents in utmost equal measure. Cape Forestier is also a self-described exercise in recognising "how humans choose to treat each other, love each other, and make promises to build something beautiful together." By that, they mean marriage: Cape Forestier's ear for sentiment knows few bounds, with stripped-back, bridal-gowned romances like 'The Wedding Song' commanding an adept ear for candid space and finger-plucking nostalgisms.

Review: Japanese singer-songwriter, composer and multi-instrumentalist Ichiko Aoba is a merchant of the most soothing emotions. Whack this on and you'll be reaching for your incense burner, dimming the lights and switching off your phone as you bask in its elegance. The lead single 'Luciferine' has a lackadaisical flow, with graceful piano and strings underpinning Aoba's pure voice, which introduces the album's central theme of bioluminescence to striking effect. Whilst some musicians wing it through "feel" Ichiko is classically trained and her hard work has paid off - she's had a few great earners along the way, collaborating with Nintendo on the Zelda soundtrack - and had the honour of working with Ryuichi Sakamoto. This new album of hers goes a long way in pushing her brand of Japanese folk-pop towards legendary status - you can envision this being one that will be reissued in 40 years' time.

Review: Japanese psychedelic pop singer-songwriter Ai Aso hails from Tokyo and has an almost impossibly wispy thin folky style to her singing that makes her utterly unique. She has been active since 2000 and has worked both solo as well as with the likes of White Heaven members You Ishihara and Michio Kurihara. Her solo album arrived back in 2014 and now a decade on gets a vinyl press via Ideologic Organ. It is beautifully delicate and whimsical, with lullaby-like guitar melodies and her own vaporous vocals drifting gently with a real sense of innocence in the sparse tracks. Lo-fi and intimate, this is a quiet gem.

Review: Willow Avalon fashions after her Georgia upbringing a sharp, incisive debut LP. The splash debut artist’s lyrical lexicon is a fierce one, and that’s not to mention her rich backing instrumental palette of classic country and Americana. From whip-smart lines in ‘Homewrecker’ and ‘Yodelayheewho’ to moments of regret in ‘The Actor’ and ‘Baby Blue’, her storytelling never slips into cliché; “she gets at least as much of her musical talent from her mom's side,” says her father Jim White, as her Southern roots and filial retrospections permeate each song.

Review: Every album bands and artists release usually results in a tour, but not every album bands and artists release is really worthy of all that noise. Not so with British singer-songwriter Elles Bailey, whose first LP for the Cooking Vinyl imprint, Beneath The Glow, explored love and its various forms and guises. The unwavering adoration of two good friends. The rare flames of passion that burn long, not just bright. The heartbreak that follows a love that didn't last all time. You get the point - hyper emotional stuff which resonates universally. Backed by her critically acclaimed band, the record led many to once again position Bailey as a blues, Americana, rock artiste extraordinaire. While we're sure she didn't mind the praise, it's worth noting her view that none of those boxes really suit someone who purposefully plays with, bends and twists genres so freely.

Review: "I'd prefer it to be called just a country album," said TORRES of her collaboration with Baker, nearly a decade in the making, "but I'm proud to have made a 'queer country' album." TORRES had the initial idea to turn to the genre, inviting Baker to collaborate not only because of her shared southern roots but also because she'd also had a similarly religious upbringing that ultimately saw sexual orientation judged and condemned. The result is some deeply autobiographic songwriting on tracks like 'Tuesday', about a traditional family's rage at discovering their daughter was gay, the lilting 'Sylvia' and 'Sugar In The Tank', with pedal steel meeting acoustic guitar strum and very intimate sounding vocals. Bound to cause controversy in certain areas of the US, but it's got the quality and distinctive flavour to stand its ground.

Review: Spectral musical favourites Ghost Box return with the beautiful third album by Beautify Junkyards. Extending the idea that junkyards aren't already beautiful in their own scrappy sort of way, Nova is an exquisite selection of junk-larked tropicalia "finds", visually (album-cover-ally) building on the news cut-up assemblages of Dada and committing them to the beatific atmospheric siblings that are trip hop, psychedelia and what we'd trepidatiously deign to call cosmic lounge. With special guests Paul Weller, Dorothy Moskowitz (of United States of America) and Jesse Chandler (of Pneumatic Tubes & Midlake), this is a thoroughly far-flung metal detecting foray indeed, but it's not the inclusion of the canonic names of 60s psychedelic rock that makes this one special, more than it is its bright, refined, verging on impeccable recordings; despite much guitar echo and analogue anaphora, nothing gets lost in mire, despite this being a nominal junkyard. Best of among the shiny things has to be 'Sonora', the star prize in this magpie's nest. These acid folk have well and truly done it again.

With a fusion of spiritually resonant sounds, each track blooms with distinct environmental and evocative qualities. The quartet's fusion of talents, evident in their first two tracks 'Flowers That Talk' and 'Happy to Be,' shows a spiritually resonant and environmentally evocative sound. With its tracklist spanning from 'Small Vows' to 'Morning Sea,' the album hints at a diverse sonic landscape ripe for exploration. Beings mark their arrival as a dynamic force in the music scene.

Review: This is the seventh album by chamber pop titans Beirut. The group, who are led by Zach Condon, have created their largest album to-date and it's among their most profoundly beautiful. The music originated in 2023 when a contemporary circus director, based in Sweden, who was creating a show based on an adaptation of a novel by German author Judith Schalansky about loss and impermanence asked Condon to write music. And who better than Beirut to score that theme. Condon's vocals are starkly beautiful with the tenderness of early choir music. The track 'Caspian Tiger' is among the most cinematic of the tracks on here with resplendent Renaissance influences and direct lyrics that are tear jerking and feel genuinely moved by the extinction of the great mammal, but could so easily be about a close friend lost.

Review: B-sides and rarities spanning Beirut's entire recording career are compiled on this elegant-looking and musically exceptional double outing. Artifacts was initially conceived as a vehicle for pushing out some early work in a formal release, but quickly grew to what you see before you know - 26 songs, 17 of which have never seen been available before now. When you consider what all that means a purchase becomes essential. Zach Cordon began trying to realise his sonic dreams at the tender age of 14, under the Beirut moniker, and has slowly developed from solo project to full blown band. What's here helps tell that tale, and the impact is profound - a spectacular journey from indie to world to folk to electronica and baroque pop by the heads who pioneered that beguiling combination.

It leans heavily on acoustic for and melody as a result of being written during the pandemic on a stripped down setup of just bass and acoustic guitars. As such it has a quiet vibe, an intimacy, a late night and low-lit feel throughout that makes it all there alluring and personal. The drums that feature are lo-fi and fuzzy round the edges, the bring a happy energy to the tunes without dominating and Welsh language fans will be glad to see all the titles are native, too.

Review: Following the success of Matt Berry's 2021 release, The Blue Elephant, and last year's collaboration with KPM, his eighth studio album, Heard Noises, arrives via Acid Jazz. This album comes in a stunning label-exclusive gatefold edition on a classy sky blue vinyl. The lead single, 'I Gotta Limit', shows Matt's lyrical exchange with Kitty Liv, reflecting a man yearning for another chance with a woman who is losing patience. The song, influenced by Sly Stone, packs a wealth of musical ideas into its three-minute duration, blending Northern Soul with psychedelic elements. In contrast to the eclectic sounds of The Blue Elephant, Heard Noises embraces a looser, Californian psychedelic vibe, infusing the album with space pop influences and haunting melodies. Displaying Matt's remarkable musicianship, he plays nearly every instrument, from guitars to synths, joined by longtime collaborator Craig Blundell and an array of talented guests. This album encapsulates the diverse musical journey that has defined Matt Berry's career as a musician, alongside his roles as comedic actor.

Hear The Children Sing & The Evidence
Hear The Children Sing (19:59)
The Evidence (20:57)
Review: Nathan Salsburg's new project, Hear the Children Sing the Evidence, began as a lullaby ritual for his daughter Talya, where he sang Lungfish's 'The Evidence' to soothe her. This inspired Salsburg to collaborate with Bonnie 'Prince' Billy (Will Oldham) and Tyler Trotter on an album of Lungfish covers. The result is a collection that highlights the timeless power of Lungfish's music. Recorded live without full rehearsals, the album captures a spontaneous and intimate interaction between musicians. 'Hear the Children Sing features delicate guitars, Oldham's malleable voice, Trotter's steady drumbeat, and Zak Riles' banjo. The drum-less 'The Evidence' creates an instant trance with Salsburg's acoustic guitar loop and Rhodes keyboard harmonising with Oldham's vocals. The extended versions reveal the depth of Daniel Higgs' lyrics, with each listen uncovering new meanings. The inclusion of Oldham's daughter Poppy and Salsburg's daughter Talya adds a personal touch, blending mystical songs for adults with lullabies for children. This heartfelt project enriches listeners with profound words and ideas, making it a timeless and meaningful collection that bridges generations through music.

Review: It's often the albums that fall between the cracks that are the greatest. Violin virtuoso and singer Andrew Bird and Americana singer-songwriter Madison Cunningham shine a light on the underrated pre-Fleetwood Mac gem of an album, Buckingham Nicks, by fully covering it. Released five years before Stevie Nicks and Lindsey Buckingham went on to have mega success with Rumours, Buckingham Nicks was such a flop commercially that they were dropped by their label Polydor. But it is a cracking album and in covering it in their own style and having a palpably strong musical connection as a duo themselves, Bird and Cunningham have done it absolute justice and changed it. They have shed the 70s pop sheen of the original and made something more timeless to behold. 'Stephanie' is moody, majestic and cosmic and 'Without A Leg To Stand On' is one of the most stirring vocal performances you'll hear in 2024. A highly rewarding listen throughout.

Review: The nearly mythical Buckingham Nicks from 1973, featuring Stevie Nicks and Lindsey Buckingham, has gained significant acclaim despite its original obscurity. With no CD or streaming availability, its tracks are typically found only through rare vinyl copies or dubious online rips. Enter Andrew Bird and Madison Cunningham, whose collaborative project, Cunningham Bird, breathes new life into this largely forgotten album. Produced by Mike Viola, this reinterpretation strips away the original's heavy production, showcasing Bird's exquisite violin and Cunningham's smooth vocals. Their shared harmonies replace the tension that characterised the Buckingham-Nicks dynamic, transforming songs like 'Long Distance Winner' into poignant laments. Notably, 'Lola (My Love)' is reimagined as a heartfelt ballad akin to Dolly Parton's 'Jolene', adding depth to the material. Bird and Cunningham's interpretations not only honour the original but also enhance it, proving the songs' flexibility and enduring appeal. Their unique sound and vibrant acoustic instrumentation, offer a fresh perspective for a new generation, making Cunningham Bird a compelling and accessible homage to a classic.

Review: Birdie's debut album, Some Dusty, first graced the music scene in 1999 and is now experiencing a well-deserved revival with a remastered vinyl reissue by Slumberland Records. The album's origins trace back to 1992 when Debsey Wykes (Dolly Mixture) and Paul Kelly (East Village) joined Saint Etienne's live band, sparking a connection over their shared admiration for '60s and '70s sunshine pop and soft rock. This bond led to the formation of Birdie in 1994, and the release of their 'Spiral Staircase' 7" single in 1997 on Summershine. Some Dusty was crafted in the summer of 1998 with producer Brian O'Shaughnessy (Denim, Moose, The Clientele). The album's deep and beautiful soundscapes are enriched by Debsey's sweet and soulful vocals, perfectly matched with the melodic, understated yet sophisticated arrangements. The quest for the quintessential pop moment is evident in every track, from the shimmering chimes of 'Port Sunlight' to the intricate interplay of acoustic guitar, trumpet, and keyboards on 'Let Her Go,' and the gentle wah guitar on 'One Two Five.' The addition of lush string arrangements by Sean O'Hagan of The High Llamas elevates the album to classic status. The reissue of Some Dusty allows a new generation to experience its timeless charm and impeccable production, solidifying its place as a pop masterpiece.

Review: BC, NR are now onto their third album. The Ninja Tune-signees gained attention for not posing as if they're in a band, but looking like an ordinary group of students, or twentysomethings house-sharing. Their bold look, where they're smiling in the press pics, as opposed to donning a moody pout, has thankfully been backed up with some terrific music. Their debut, For The First Time, earned them favourable comparisons to post-rock trailblazers Slint and their second album Ants From Up There is the Gen-z equivalent of Arcade Fire's Funeral, thanks to its grandiose anthemics. Famously, singer and lyricist Isaac Wood left the band on the even of the release of their second album, which sparked outcry and paranoia from their ever-growing army of fans about what that might mean for their future. But the band have kept at it and the remaining six members have chosen to share frontperson duties, thus relieving the added pressure that comes with being a designated frontperson. This third album - and first post Isaac Wood - is proving to be a striking new chapter, with the lead single, 'Besties', an immediately likeable way of introducing it to the world. Georgia Ellery, also of Jockstrap, takes lead vocals here and offers an unforgettable off-kilter indie pop cut reminiscent of Aldous Harding. Zutons-y sax stabs scattered in make for a beautiful touch and leave us feeling that this is the album that's going to send BC, NR onto a stratospheric level, where they're spoken about in the same breath as Radiohead as one of Britain's finest bands.

Review: James Ford is one of the most important unsung heroes of contemporary pop and rock. As a studio producer, he's helped craft and hone incredible work from Fontaines DC, Arctic Monkeys, Depeche Mode, Blur and more. As an artist in his own right, he's perhaps more incredible. So, his impact on the latest and long-awaited new addition to Black Country New Road's catalogue should not be underestimated. Nor should the result of splitting the songwriting and vocal duties between members Tyler Hyde, Georgia Ellery and May Kershaw. "It's definitely very different" said one of the trio about how this compares to preceding long form outings. We'd say it's definitely very different to most music you'll hear this week. It's folk, soft rock, experimental garage something, and none of the above, with tracks that almost seem at odds with themselves, chopping and changing, evolving and progressing, until you hear them as a whole.

Review: After 2015, Bon Iver began to fuse ambient glitch with folk, a style which now reaches a head on his latest LP. It expands on 2024's taster EP 'SABLE' in the form of an 11-track sonic parable: waxing introspective on difficult themes such as memory and identity, 'THINGS BEHIND THINGS BEHIND THINGS' and 'S P E Y S I D E' indulge typographic play and fragmental lyrics, the latter especially paradigm-shifting in lyrical perspective. 'Awards Season', also, deals in the problematics of recognition, peeking behind and thus part-dissolving the veil of success in public life. With signature passion yet quarrelsomeness, Justin Vernon has crafted yet another glistening, glitching folk odyssey for us to enjoy.

Review: Indie singer-songwriter and folk experimentalist Bon Iver follows up his 2024 EP 'SABLE', expanding upon the EP's concept with a full-length in 11 tracks. Diving into themes of memory, longing and transformation, the record feels like a deciduous psychic regrowth, processed and refined from an initial uncontrolled burl of raw feeling and expression. Layering experimental sounds and organic textures, it hints at Iver's change in direction kept steady ever since 2016's Jagjaguwar debut 22, A Million. The style was continued and redeveloped on 2019's fourth album, i,i, and now returns in its fullest resplendency, with modern symbolic bricolage of effulgent soundscapes and querulous singing. This is the latest in a string of records that cements Justin Vernon stature as an artist and not a mere musician: increasingly, we hear the work of someone clawing back greater and greater shares of aesthetic control.

Review: Bonnie "Prince" Billy (Will Oldham) is a folk artist of towering stature, so the news of a new album in 2023 was nothing if not a "stop what you're doing" moment. Now coming to full-length LP format for the first time, after an initial CD and digital release, Keeping Secrets Will Destroy You hears Billy revive the spirit of folk music's roots in community and place, conjuring the wise memories of his past and fusing them with the anxieties of his present day. An all-acoustic, all-emotive album, Oldham makes constant reference to his family and people, getting at the real impossibility of divorcing oneself from community, despite the myths to the contrary peddled by merchants of the American dream.

Review: On his latest LP, Will Oldham aka. Bonnie "Prince" Billy dares to work with a producer for the second time: David "Ferg" Ferguson of Johnny Cash and Sturgill Simpson fame, whose attentive hand guides each of these idling songs through to their sinister, diminished conclusions. Led by the ingenious 'London May' - a lolloping Americana concept piece, illustrating the ostensibly lonely, isolated, suicidally ideating (but ultimately not) persona that is BPB - this sombre record ends up a difficult-to-pin one, touching on themes of self-loss, death and devilish deals. Unlike many other records by Oldham, this lilac lilter hears the convalescence of several composers' and vocalists' voices, reflecting a newfound collaborative opening for the artist, perhaps breaking from a common interpretation of his music as solipsistic.

Review: Bonny Light Horseman's upcoming double album, Keep Me on Your Mind/See You Free, heralds a significant milestone in their musical journey. The album is a poignant ode to the complexities of human experience, exploring themes of love, loss, hope, and community. Recorded at Levis Corner House, an iconic Irish pub suggested by Anais Mitchell, the album captures the essence of imperfection as a badge of honor. The trio's immediate connection to the pub's sense of community and family infused the recording process with a profound sense of authenticity. Accompanying the album announcement is the release of 'I Know You Know' and the band's first-ever music video, directed by Kimberly Stuckwisch. Bonny Light Horseman's core trio - Anais Mitchell, Eric D. Johnson, and Josh Kaufman - bring a wealth of experience and talent to the project. Individually celebrated in their own right, their collective synergy elevates the album to new heights of emotional depth and vulnerability. Keep Me on Your Mind/See You Free promises to be a raw and unvarnished offering, showcasing the band's ability to navigate the complexities of the human condition with grace and authenticity.

Review: An experimental dark folk group from Wurzburg, Germany, Brannten Schnure's 2017 release gets a well-deserved reissue, retaining its distinctive experimental dark folk essence. The duo, Christian Schoppik and Katie Rich, crafts immersive soundscapes where traditional instruments, eerie vocals, and looped, crackling recordings converge. Tracks like 'Das Jungfrauliche Ohr' and 'Die Milchlinse' set the tone, blending atonal elements with haunting, dreamlike atmospheres. 'Die Geschandete Venus' takes a darker, more melancholic turn, with its slow, creeping build. On the B-side, tracks such as 'Der Kleinere Mit Gefleckten Linien Umgebene Papillonsflugel' offer intricate compositions that evoke a surreal, almost cinematic quality. With influences from Nico and Novy Svet, their music pours out and creates a world that's both unsettling and strangely beautiful.

Review: Originally released on tape by SicSic in 2014, Aprilnacht commemorates a decade of music from Brannten Schnure and marked the spring in a tetralogy of albums about the four seasons. When it was first released, Brannten Schnure consisted solely of German musician Christian Schoppik; it was only after this period that he'd continue to hone is gothic folk romanticism and pastoral neoclassical sound, thereafter enlisting the help of vocalist Katie Rich as well. Now reissued by the esteemed Aguirre Records, Aprilnacht returns for a second haunting, retro-spectrally calling to mind its eerie sound collages and dusty sampler assemblages.

Review: This welcome reissue is a wonderful blend of poetic storytelling and intricate guitar work infused with haunting and deeply personal melodies. Anne Briggs is known primarily as a ballad singer but explores the human condition here through a mix of original compositions and carefully chosen covers. Originally released in 1971, The Time Has Come marked a shift from her unaccompanied vocal style and introduced guitar and bouzouki. Rather than overshadowing her voice, the instrumentation enhances its crystalline beauty as her delicate yet commanding fingerpicking means Biggs crafts an intimate and emotionally rich sound that makes this one an underrated folk delight.

Review: Bright Eyes' new album, Five Dice, All Threes, set for release via Dead Oceans, showcs their signature intensity and tenderness on full display. The first track, 'Bells and Whistles,' is a rollicking, anthemic bop that gallavants from NY to LA, with lacerating lyrics referencing Banksy, Princess Diana, and more. Conor Oberst's voice conveys a sense of life-or-death gravity, drawing listeners into the visceral thrill of the music. Self-produced and recorded at ARC in Omaha, the album features guest performances from Cat Power, Matt Berninger, and Alex Orange Drink. Bright Eyes continue to honour the album as an exalted art form, delivering songs that are confessional, unguarded, and imbued with emotional stakes. Five Dice, All Threes embodies the band's enduring influence and fearless evolution. The art does not stop with the music either. This beautiful package comes complete with red and orange splattered vinyl 2xLP (side 4 etched) in spot-varnished sleeve.
