Review: Southside Movement was a Chicago funk band that was busy during the mid 70s releasing a total of three albums between 1973 and 1975 on Wand and 20th Century Records. They also collaborated with the lush tones of soul singer and fellow Chicagoan Jackie Ross on records for Chess and Brunswick that have long since been forgotten. Until now, that is, because P-VINE has put together this great reissue of the music that was only released in limited test presses back in the day, and has added to it some previously unreleased tracks. The standout here is 'You Are The One That I Need' with its tropical funky vibes.

Review: Dusty Springfield's Faithful is a long-lost gem that showcases the singer at the height of her powers. Originally intended as her third Atlantic album in 1971, the tracks were shelved until even after the singer passed on. Real Gone's reissue beautifully captures the essence of these soulful songs, produced by Jeff Barry. While not containing a standout hit, tracks like 'Haunted' and 'Natchez Trace' deliver a funky, raw energy reminiscent of Dusty's best work. The album follows the Memphis blueprint but with a New York twist, lacking the swampy groove but compensating with Dusty's commanding vocals. The musicians' credits may be missing, but Dusty's voice shines over the gospel pop of 'I Found My Way Through the Darkness' and the Bread cover 'Make it With You.' Faithful is another great album in her discography that is always a welcomed listen.

The Staples Jr. Singers, known for their rare 1975 album When Do We Get Paid, have seen a resurgence with its reissue in 2022, earning critical acclaim. Now in their 60s, Edward, Annie, and R.C. Brown are joined by the younger generation, ensuring their musical legacy endures. Searching is a great example to the passage of time, resilience, and the enduring power of music. For a group to reform, record and again and even tour like The Staples singers are is truly a great story in music and shows how the music industry can work in a different and ideal way.

Review: The Starvue band is legendary amongst fans of disco and jazz funk. Made up of Keith Blake, Judy Davis, Andre Morgan, Anthony Hicks, Burton Fowler, Lester Falconer III, Victor Hughes and Larry Horne they dropped just one album back in 1080 but that's all that was needed to secure their legacy. The last reissue was in 2018 and before that it has come only on CD. Now P-Vine re-enters it into the world of wax with all the original tunes and artwork present. It's cosmic, meticulously arranged and glorious to get lost in with well-known classic 'Body Fusion' being the standout amongst many.

From the outset, the album demonstrates the band's ability to capture emotion with the haunting saxophone and reflective vocals on 'How Many Times', which sets a powerful tone for what follows. The title track delivers an uplifting, seventies-inspired anthem, combining brass, hand percussion and heartfelt harmonies that evoke the essence of Isaac Hayes and Stevie Wonder. Review: At the tail end of the '80s, Sylvia Striplin quit Norman Connors' jazz-funk group Aquarian Dream in order to pursue a solo career. Joining forces with producers James Bedford and Roy Ayers, she recorded 1981 debut album "Give Me Your Love", a well regarded but largely overlooked set that has since become a sought-after item amongst soul collectors. This Expansion reissue presents the album on vinyl for the first time in two decades. As with many soul albums of the period, it sashays between jazz-funk, boogie and heartfelt slow jams, contrasting memorable dancefloor workouts (see stone cold classic "Give Me Your Love" and a stellar cover of Roy Ayers favourite "Searchin") with more saccharine, loved-up fare.
