Review: Hull and Leeds-based band bdrmm finally follow up their acclaimed debut album Bedroom - which was instantly passed as a modern day shoegaze classic - with a new EP. It features the recent single 'Port' as well as fresh remixes by the ever more essential Daniel Avery, plus Working Men's Club, A Place To Bury Strangers and others. That single, 'Port,' took the band in a new direction with a darker sound fun of distorted drones and beats, with howls of anguish and manic guitar frenzies. That is carried over into the rest of the EP next to some radical reworks.

Thinking About You (3:36)
Old Man (3:19)
Review: Indie darling Beck has been 'Thinking About You' on what is his first new music in some time since he dropped his GRAMMY-winning Hyperspace album. This single gets pressed up to a limited edition golden-brown 7" to mark the much-loved artist's birthday and it is a sublime bit of prime and emotional Beck as his heart-tugging best. The ballad has some sombre harmonica, acoustic guitar lushness and was recorded in the same room as his classic 'Sea Change'. On the flip side is his GRAMMY-nominated cover of Neil Young's 'Old Man' which is a wistful sound with rich tones.

Review: New York City's Been Stellar debuts on the So Young label with an album that is bright but distorted and crackly. It has great stories of violence as well as love, and paints a picture of the new and un-glamorous New York City itself. His big walls of guitar tones and vocal earnesty all convey the history of his local streets in indie-rock tunes that go big. There is an underlying pulse to 'My Honesty' that locks you in while tightly coiled guitars move from loud-quiet dynamics to build tension. It is a highlight amongst many here.

The Commune (4:33)
Plastic Bag (4:23)
Review: Andy Bell's debut solo single gets reworked twice here by Pye Corner Audio, with the originals also included. First up is a version of 'The Commune' that's slow and heady. Sludgy drums and bass bring murk while distant keys add a little ray of light and hope somewhere in the distance. Plastic Bag (Pye Corner Audio remix) sounds like a lost cut made by The Stone Roses and Primal Scream back in the nineties. Its another one mired in lo-fi fuzz and fioth, which is only shown up even more when you hear the more airy originals.

Dry The Rain (6:04)

Dogs Got A Bone (5:54)
Review: Although Regal themselves had reissued a number of The Beta Band originals not too long ago, Rhino has come through this Autumn with a new bunch of represses from the band's '90s output. Champion Versions, alongside The Patty Patty Sound, is one of the outfit's defining moments, not least because of "Dry The Rain", a song which is instantly recognizable in everyone's mind thanks to those lazy, wailing vocals, chuggy drums and melting trumpets. Although that tune is clearly the winner on this EP, "I Know" is equally creative thanks to its broken shreds of percussion and ethereal guitar, whereas "B+A" is a true stoner rock number, and "Dogs Got A Bone" showcases the band's inherent folk sensibilities. Gorgeous.

Review: Following on from their widely acclaimed album Afraid To Leave, Berlin's beautiful maudlin post-punk outfit Bleib Modern presents a compilation of remixes and reworks by esteemed artists from across darkwave, post-punk, and EBM. From IV Horsemen's club-worthy rendition of 'Bitter Smile' to M!R!M's dreamy synthpop take on 'Into The Night' via Dune Messiah's crooning 'Loony Voices, 2 Afraid 2 Leave: Remixed Reimaged Reloaded Part 2 offers truly diverse interpretations. With contributions from luminaries like The KVB and Blind Delon, it provides a fresh perspective on Bleib Modern's sound and serves as an exciting interlude that showcases the band's versatility and paves the way for future creations

Arranger Rob Moose is the man doing it having worked with Sufjan Stevens, The National, Bon Iver and may others. What he brings is a luscious new sound with majestic, sweeping new orchestral arrangements that bring new perspective to one of last year's best records. Joking (Osprey 2 version Verruckt) (4:19)
Review: Brochure is a collab between Gee Dee, Miles Felix and Nick Stropko that now debuts with a cover of Celine Lomez's 'Joking,' originally from Soft Rock for Hard Times Vol. 7. They transform the track into a longing ballad drenched in synthesisers and recorded half-time. On Side-B, Osprey 2, which is the latest alias of Ryan M Todd (aka Paul Atreides, Tom Guycot, Darklord Disco) reimagines the ballad into a funky, driving krautrock number with Version Verruckt. These are scenic mental trips as well as persuasive physical rhythms.

Review: Given the amount of energy he's put into his "Tim's Twitter Party" online listening events this year, it's perhaps surprising that Charlatans frontman Tim Burgess has found time to record new music. Ascent of the Ascended, his new EP, follows on from May's well-received solo album, I Love The New Sky, and lands on orange translucent vinyl. Fans will find plenty to cheer, including two songs recorded with, and produced by, Charles Heywood: the effervescent title track and 'Yours To Be', a deliciously jangling, life-affirming affair built around multi-tracked acoustic guitars, soft-touch percussion and lilting horn lines. The set's four other tracks, including a rather lovely new version of Charlatans classic 'The Only One I Know', were recorded "in session" during a Paste Magazine event in New York.

Review: The new Bauhaus BBC Sessions release hears British goth pioneers Bauhaus at their most vital, documenting the three-year period that they swept the airwaves like vampire bats with a hearse's worth of recordings made for UK radio. Spanning early post-punk urgencies to the relatively more textured darkness of their later work, these sessions were recorded for shows hosted by John Peel and David Jensen, flapping through alternate takes of 'Double Dare', 'In the Flat Field', and 'Third Uncle'. Together with a recent vinyl reissue of a 1983 performance at the Old Vic in London, which snapped a shot of Bauhaus at the peak of their dramaturgic snarks, both releases provide a compelling, rough-edged, bouffant counterpart to their studio albums, before goth went bird's nest: Bauhaus live and direct, with all the mood, menace and momentum fully intact.

Review: Captured in San Francisco in December of 1982, only over six months before their original dissolution in July of the following year, this live performance from gloom maestro goth rock pioneers Bauhaus leans heavily on material from their (at the time) two-month old third full-length The Sky's Gone Out including their opening cover of Brian Eno's 'Third Uncle' and 'Silent Hedges', as well as 1981's career height sophomore classic Mask, with cuts such as 'In Fear Of Fear', 'Kick In The Eye', and 'Hollow Hills' making appearances. Some love is shown to their debut In The Flat Field with the inclusion of 'Spy In The Cab', but most noteworthy is that the set features an early live unveiling of 'She's In Parties', which wouldn't see release for another four months with the band breaking up just a week before the single's adjacent album Burning From The Inside would drop.

Review: "A document created in the shadow of incredible darkness. One from which the creator hadn't planned on escaping and still doesn't. Hence the title of the album. It is the result of an illness that I've battled my whole life. It isn't something that the world has done to me. It's the world I live in, and it's no one's fault."
So says Brian Christinzio, AKA BC Camplight, of his sixth album. As ever, it's a musical masterpiece packing dense layers of instrumental experimentation and theses-worthy lyrical poignance. An artist who has never played by the musical rules, fans of strong juxtapositions will again be in there element, with a tracklist that spans grunge-y garage rock, twisted barroom journeyman stuff, theatrical guitar pop, and plenty more. But the sounds themselves are only one half the genius. When it comes to arrangements, things are as playful as they are innovative, keeping listeners guessing as to how structures will pan out.

Review: Long-time indie darlings and American dream pop duo Beach House barely ever put a foot wrong, and you won't find a misstep on this, their fifth album, either. Depression Cherry was co-produced by the band with Chris Coady and first came back in 2015. It was written over two years before that and saw the band return to a more simplistic sound with fewer instruments, tunes constructed around a main melody and live drums featuring less than in the past. This was in response to having enlarged their sound as the venues they played grew ever bigger, but dialing it back in was a good move if you ask us.

Available in limited numbers (only 1,000 of this CD version was pressed), it not only includes the freshly remastered original album in full, but also three alternate versions, rare bonus cut 'Fade Away', and a raucous live recording of title track 'Albatross'. The original album remains a timeless alt-rock classic where raw guitar riffs, bluesy solos and Ian Thurnley's distinctive lead vocals wrap around thickset bass and punchy drums. For proof, check standouts 'Wolves', 'Glass Room' and the rowdy 'The Rest of the World'.

Fronted by a young and hungry Nick Cave the band delivered an intoxicating mix of rusty blues and mutant rockabilly, post punk sensibilities, noise and experimentation that exploded when played live and these absolutely essential collection of live radio recordings are a powerful proof of that. This first volume contains the first two Peel sessions the band recorded for the BBC, on September 1980 and April 1981.

Review: Originally limited to 1000 copies at the time of release, to say Ben Howard (The Birthday Party's) second Peel Sessions recording has achieved cult status would be an understatement. 'Oats In The Water' certainly did no harm here, having appeared in both The Walking Dead and The Innocents, and trailers for video game The Witcher 3. Plenty of exposure, this should not suggest the rest of the EP rests on laurels.

Everything matches up to that track's spellbinding qualities and then some. The Birthday Party's take on punk is ripe for cinematic appropriation, but cast aside thoughts of soundtracks and you're left with something that's vital and crying out to be experienced live in the flesh. Rough, ready, rowdy, resolutely hypnotic and deceptively deep, not least the epic eight-minute title piece featuring Monica Heldal.

Review: Icelandic music producer Bjork, who requires absolutely no introduction given her massive contribution to electronic pop music over the last twenty years, finally returns with her new album Vulnicura on One Little Indian Records. Although the LP represents her breakup with Matthew Barney, there are vivid rays of light nested among the more dreary-eyed vocals and melodies. As per usual with her work, there is a distinctive personal touch to her songs. This is most vividly characterised by the droning style of her singing, a sort of juxtaposition when combined to the music below it. Expect an intricate blend of sci-fi electronics, break-ridden power beats and of course, plenty of hard ambience. Bjork's ninth studio album is another winner. Review: How do you better a debut album that was many critics favourite set of 2021? That was the task facing Black Country New Road when they headed into the studio to record Ants From Up There. Whether or not they've managed to outdo their fine debut is open to debate, but there's no doubt that this sophomore set is superb - a unique musical fusion that draws on a multitude of styles (indie, jazz, fiddle-sporting folk, pared-back post-rock, inspired experimentalism etc.) and melds them into an impactful, emotive and melancholic sound that largely defies categorization. This special edition of the album also includes a bonus CD featuring a recording of the band's lockdown live stream from Queen Elizabeth Hall, London, that's every bit as impressive.

Review: It's funny to think about the Blur v Oasis contest that defined British music in the mid-1990s. Then bright young things looking to shake things up after years of electronic rave dominance, the fact so much emphasis was placed on these two bands makes for an incomplete story of those times, while their individual output was not quite polar but certainly harder to compare than headlines suggested. Skip forward a few decades and differences are now pronounced. The Gallagher Brothers have pursued relatively familiar sounds in the 21st Century. Blur, or at least Damon Albarn, created a 3D animated virtual band while overseeing the first few editions of the globally acclaimed Manchester International Festival. Now, 33 years after the debut single, Blur return with studio LP number nine, and it's a stunner. Not so much growing old gracefully as tackling challenges that come with it, it's though proving, poignant and grittily woozy.

Review: Second time around for former Suede man Bernard Butler's 1998 debut solo album, People Move On. Ostensibly an advert for his musical virtuosity (Butler sang and played all of the instruments bar drums and strings), the album remains one of the most timeless of the Britpop era, in part thanks to the artist's decision to include dreamy instrumentals and folksy numbers alongside the Suede-esque singles and This Is Hardcore-era Pulp intensity. This expanded four-disc edition also includes Butler's own 2021 update, where he re-recorded the vocals and added some guitar overdubs (CD2); a disc of B-sides from the period expanded with some newly voiced revisions (CD3); and a compilation of demos and work-in-progress versions (CD4).

Review: The Cribs have a lot riding on this one, having hit a career-plateau with 2017's just-decent-enough 24-7 Rock Star Shit and spent several years soul searching amid management disputes. It's also the record they made in California after being invited out by Dave Grohl, who recognised a band in dire need of escaping from the industrial side of the music business. So the strength of this record, and its reception, could do wonders or cause more damage.

Thankfully it's a big step in the right direction, and opening track 'Goodbye' can even be read as a final farewell to difficult days gone by. It's hard not to buy into the idea, too, given the song is a curveball wave of surf pop nobody was expecting. Freshness that certainly sets the tone, although with wholly Cribs-ian work like 'Running Into You' and 'The Weather Sparks Your Name' militant fans shouldn't worry, either.

Review: Initially released in 2014, and perhaps somewhat unfairly perceived as underwhelming, 'The Way' has gone on to garner its own muted cult legacy, largely and unfortunately due to the fact that it would be the final Buzzcocks album before the passing of founding frontman, Pete Shelley.

The fact that the group remain active only in a touring sense, fronted now by other founding guitarist Steve Diggle, should speak volumes to the creative voice left behind.

With a long, near decade gap between 'The Way' and the preceding, exceptional, 'Flat Pack Philosophy', and a fan-inclusive Pledge Music campaign complete with exclusive bonus material and insights, it's hard to ignore just how willing Buzzcocks were to roll with the modern age, sharpening their marketing savvy and dropping material that refused to give an inch to would be peers or disciples half their age or tenure.

Review: The end of the initial, near decade-long Buzzcocks hiatus that occurred in the mid-nineties, has been captured and immortalised on 'French'; a live album recorded in France (shock horror) at L'Arapho Club in Paris on April 12, 1995. Featuring a career-spanning set, the band exude invigorated energy as they rip through the likes of 'Ever Fallen In Love...', 'What Do I Get?', and even dust off the impassioned, 'I Believe', for a thunderous rendition. Hearing the pristine line-up under the microscope of a bygone era is truly an audible feast for casual and major fans alike.

Review: Rainn Byrns looks so fresh faced and young that one suspects his parents don't remember the 1960s, let alone him. Nevertheless, the decade has clearly a big influence on this Texas-born, Swindon-bred South Londoner's music, although within that there still remains quite a lot of scope for variety. 'I'm Her Man' echoes the battered but innocent psyche of Syd-era Floyd, 'Never Ending Story' the strut and swagger of The Doors and then the approachable weirdness of late Beatles, and everything from The Byrds to Simon & Garfunkel crops up elsewhere. There's nothing cynical or engineered about that though, it seems entirely natural and Byrns proves himself both capable of penning a memorable melody but also delivering it in an endearingly stoned Southern drawl. 'Tailspin', which reminds us of The LAs at their jangly finest, was our favourite entry point, but there are loads here and lots to like.
