Review: This is a special Record Store Day 2024 release that rights a wrong for hardcore Madness vinyl heads.
With the exception of 'Baggy Trousers,' 'Embarrassment' stood as the sole Madness single from the 80s not to receive a 12" release. This year's annual waxy celebrations however present a special opportunity to own it on vinyl as the classic Motown-inspired hit gets the coveted treatment as part of this six-track EP. Also included is the original 7" mix alongside a previously unreleased instrumental version meticulously crafted by Clive Langer, which offers fans a fresh perspective on this iconic Madness track.

Review: This 12-inch picture disc version of Madonna's 'Erotica' single (taken from the concept album about sex and romance of the same name) is a thing to behold. It arrives, finally, courtesy of Warmer Music and is in honour of the tune's 30th anniversary. The picture on the vinyl is from Madge's Sex book but was withdrawn before it actually got released back in 1992. Three versions are presented here - the original album version, plus an instrumental and a radio edit.

Review: Singer and actress SSW Mayu is mostly known for her roles in musicals and TV dramas, and delivers a fresh take on classic songs from the past. Her latest release is a 7" single on Jet Set Japan and comes from a compilation album by Cafe Music. It does a fine job of showcasing her versatile talent and her soulful voice and refined interpretation really shine as Mayu brings new life to timeless tracks while blending a hint of nostalgia with her unique signature style. This release highlights her ability to cross genres and create a soothing yet captivating musical experience, making it a standout addition to the Cafe Music compilation.

MacColl's distinctive vocals and songwriting prowess shine through in every track, from the infectious energy of 'Walking Down Madison' to the poignant storytelling of 'My Affair.' As always these are short put potent tunes and this is the second collaborative record he has made with drummer and producer Travis Barker. Review: It has been six years since Macklemore dropped his last album Gemini in 2017. Ben is a welcome return to form after long battles with addiction and some sad relapses for the artist. 'Faithful' here is a very personal song that reflects those battles. "As long as I can remember, I've wanted to be clean, and yet the disease I have is always present, it always follows me," he says. That is well expressed through this record with four sides of deeply intimate and tightly packed hip-hop bars that make a real emotional impact.

It features nearly 80 minutes of live renditions of Madge's most iconic hits, all of which were in this form originally recorded for live radio broadcasts. Review: There are a slew of live albums dropping in January whether by fluke or by design and one of the best ones is this. Madonna's Live In Dallas 1990 album comes on grey marbled vinyl and was originally recorded for a live radio broadcast. Her brilliant performance at Reunion Arena, on May 7th, takes in all of the very many Madge hits of the era, as you would expect. There is a particularly sensual version of 'Like A Virgin', an empathic version of 'Like A Prayer' and plenty of crowd-pleasing part starters such as 'Papa Don't Preach'.

Review: Miami-born and raised, synth-pop duo Magdalena Bay relocated to Los Angeles and have been blazing a trail with their self-produced music towards the top of the pop world. To celebrate the beguiling aura of their second album, released in August 2024, there's a limited repress of it in a stunning yet chaotic and artsy clear blue. Stacked with bangers, including the ethereal disco single 'Image' and the cosmic electropop epic 'Death & Romance' - which recalls Destiny's Child as much as it does Jean Michel Jarre - Magdalena Bay are clearly brimming with ideas. That they then know how to package these ideas with a cohesive visual aesthetic helps them hugely on their way and at the pace they're going creatively, there's seemingly a glorious road ahead.

Review: Welsh singer and songwriter Marina returns with her sixth album and first since parting ways with Atlantic, self-released via her Queenie imprint. Where earlier work flirted with alter egos, here she fully embraces a character-led pop universe, drawing strength from archetypes of feminine power without slipping into pastiche. Across thirteen tracks, she channels everything from house-infused chamber pop to electro-balladry, always with a theatrical flair. 'Butterfly' opens with a shimmering elegance that morphs into after-hours dancefloor balm, while 'Cuntissimo' blends dreamy techno-pop with cutting social commentary. 'Cupid's Girl' veers into new rave territory, maintaining Marina's signature emotional tension between irony and sincerity. Sharp, playful and defiantly independent, this record sees Marina embrace vulnerability and spectacle with equal force.

Review: New York singer-songwiter Amber Mark makes a stunning debut album appearance, almost 4 years on from her second EP 'Conexao'. Chronicling the three disparate emotional states she tends to swing between - without, withheld and within - the album reactively channels each of these moods in 3 acts, reflecting on Mark's anxieties stylistically through funk, soul, R&B and hip-hop. From 'Softly' to 'You've Got To Feel', Mark's vocals span the regional and international accents she picked up while travelling with her mother in childhood; expect summery pop enjoyment for all to enjoy.

Review: The debut album by Malcolm McLaren - former manager of the Sex Pistols and the New York Dolls, and infamous producer in his own right - was known as Duck Rock. First released in 1983, it showed off as far-flung a mix of genres as hip hop, international music, rockabilly, and disco, not least due in part to its hand in the production duties by Fairlight pioneer JJ Jeczalik, Trevor Horn and Anne Dudley, all of whom would form Art of Noise, as well as further guest appearances by Africa Bambaataa and Thomas Dolby. An electrifying medley of the sample-tastic sensibility of the day, the album also plays out as a form of satire, parodying the oft-chaotic flights of fancy indulged by the very same era.

Review: Megan Thee Stallion's third studio album, 'Megan', marks her debut as an independent artist and reveals her personal truths with unflinching candor. The project opens powerfully with the chart-topping single 'Hiss', setting a bold tone. As the album unfolds, tracks like 'Rattle' and 'Figueroa' feature sharp disses and familiar themes.Megan shines in pieces like 'B.A.S.' and 'Otaku Hot Girl', where she demonstrates her lyrical strength and clever references. The album shifts towards introspection with 'Moody Girl' and 'Cobra', where she grapples with darker emotions, ultimately showcasing her vulnerability. Although some songs feel like straightforward rap without innovation, the overall structure is cohesive, with each track building on the last. While the polished album artwork contrasts with the rawness of the content, Megan is a strong effort. It is a worthwhile listen that captures Megan's multifaceted identity as an artist.

It comes after she had a fine 2022 that included an acclaimed collaboration with Simon Geoff called Aerial Objects and for this one she links up with sometime Ghostpoet, Brian Eno and Regina Spektor producer Leo Abrahams. The album was recorded at Peter Gabriel's Real World Studios while Melua was pregnant and finds her reflecting on her place in the world. "It's about the scene changing and being a woman in the music industry and how strange and lucky I feel to have a job I'm addicted to." It's a great listen.

When artists opt for the self-titled LP it often reflects a more honest and personal approach and that is the case here as Shawn, which was written and recorded over the past two years, is him at his most intimate. It was recorded across many sessions and locations which also helps add different perspectives and influences and was done with a small group of collaborators including Scott Harris, Mike Sabath, Eddie Benjamin, Nate Mercereau, Ethan Gruska, Amy Allen and Chris Thile.

Review: When it was first released, George Michael's Older was something of a shock to those who were used to his chart-topping hits of yore. Certainly, 1990's Listen Without Prejudice Vol. 1 was a mature and expansive album from one of pop's brightest talents, but six years later Older took a moodier turn on tracks like 'Jesus To A Child' and 'Spinning The Wheel'. There are of course some big bangers too, from the slinky funk of 'Fastlove' to 'Star People', but this was a turning point in Michael's career which finally delivered the creative freedom he'd always so vocally called out for. This expansive special edition of the album comes with additional edits, remixes and unreleased tracks to complete the picture for a landmark slice of British pop music.

Review: Listen Without Prejudice is George Michael's introspective masterpiece. It has been newly remastered by Sony for this release and plots his evolution as a musician and also a lyricist. Released in 1990, the album delves into his signature themes of love, identity, and societal issues with raw honesty and vulnerability. Michael's velvety vocals glide effortlessly over soulful melodies and intricate arrangements and tracks like 'Freedom! '90' and 'Praying for Time' still cut through as they did almost 35 years ago. The album as a whole serves as a poignant reminder to approach life and relationships with an open mind and heart. RIP to a real one.

Review: Michelle's first project, 2018's Heatwave, celebrated the vibrant energy of New York City where all six band members grew up. Following its success and their 2022 album, After Dinner We Talk Dreams, the band expanded their horizons and headed out on tour across the US and Europe with artists like Gus Dapperton, Arlo Parks and Mitski. For their new album, Songs About You Specifically, Michelle retreated to a house in Ojai, California. Immersed in the serene desert surroundings, they found a new sense of solitude and intimacy and this shift is reflected in their music, which now embraces starry shoegaze, funk and 80s synth pop.

Review: Italian pop queen Mina proves her enduring brilliance with her 76th - yes, 76th - studio album. Now 84, Mina remains a commanding force in European pop, her octave-spanning voice undimmed by time. The album has been produced by her son Massimiliano Pani and centres on love's complexities, weaving lush textures and timeless arrangements. Tracks like 'Non smetto di aspettarti' showcase her dramatic flair, while 'Senza farmi male' introduces a modern twist with electronic rock. Mina's voice, at times powerful and at others tinged with age, captures the passage of time, reminding listeners of her unmatched legacy.

Review: This double-platinum album marks a milestone in the career of one of hip-hop's most influential figures, showcasing a bold blend of rap, pop and r&b. With its varied production styles and genre-defying sound, it captures Nicki Minaj at her most versatile and confident. From the introspective, emotionally charged 'Pills N Potions' to the playful, brash energy of 'Anaconda', the album explores a wide range of themes, from love and heartbreak to empowerment and self-expression. Nicki Minaj's lyrical prowess is on full display, with sharp, memorable verses that have become iconic in their own right. The production is lush and polished, featuring both hard-hitting beats and smooth, melodic hooks. Throughout, there's a sense of both vulnerability and strength, making it a deeply personal yet universally relatable record. The album's balance of catchy pop hooks and hard-hitting rap ensures its place as a standout in Minaj's discography, cementing her as a force in contemporary music. Fans are sure to appreciate the album's long-awaited vinyl release - many say this is her best.

Review: More than a decade on from the release of her second album, Nicki Minaj enjoys a stratospheric reputation as one of the queens of contemporary American pop. It is in part thanks to this album, too, as it moved her away from there sounds of her debut into something more overtly fun. The first half is all hip-hop, the seance a mix of dance-pop, all of it with a variety of collaborators taking production credits. The album debuted at number one on the US Billboard 200 and went on to be certified double platinum with singles like 'Starships' defining its sound.

It is an official bootleg edition because the album itself was never made available on vinyl back when it was first released back in 2003 and it also features mash ups like 'Begin To Spin Me Round' (Dannnii vs Dead or Alive) and 'Don't Wanna Lose This Groove' (Dannii vs Madonna). Review: If you ask us, Dannii Minogue is by far and away the better of the two famous singing and acting Australian sisters despite often being in Kylie's shadows. Back in 1997, she released Girl, her third studio album and one which now turns 25 years young with a special anniversary edition. Three of the record's singles - 'All I Wanna Do', 'Everything I Wanted' and 'Disremembrance' - managed to make it to number one in the UK charts and a fourth, 'Coconut,' became a chart topper in Australia. More dance-orientated than previous works, this album remains one of Minogue's best.

Review: When Kylie's Fever came out in 2001, it was world-conquering in a way that surpassed the dizzying heights Australia's biggest pop icon had ever scaled before. That's saying something, but more than 20 years later 'Can't Get You Out Of My Head' remains a monumental slice of earworm magic, and that's just the tip of the iceberg. Tapping into that warm, disco-infected house wave that to be quite honest beats the likes of 'Get Lucky' to the punch, there is endless joy to be found in this pitch-perfect slice of millennial pop. The first pressings of this came around 2017 and are already worth a mint, so don't expect these ones to hang around for long either.

Review: Kylie Minogue returns with Tension II, her seventeenth studio album. This follow-up to 2023's Tension delves deeper into electronic and dance music influences, showcasing Minogue's mastery of infectious, high-energy tracks. 'Lights Camera Action', is a vibrant club anthem driven by pulsating beats and raving synths, setting the tone for a night of dance floor escapism. 'Edge of Saturday Night', co-produced with The Blessed Madonna, blends pop and house influences, creating a shimmering, feel-good track perfect for the weekend. Collaborations like 'My Oh My' with Bebe Rexha and Tove Lo lean into playful, flirtatious energy, while 'Midnight Ride' with Orville Peck and Diplo fuses country elements with festival-ready disco. The album culminates with 'Dance Alone', a pop-disco anthem featuring Sia, further capturing Minogue's signature style. Overall, Tension II is a dynamic, electronic-driven journey, filled with club-ready hits that solidify Minogue's timeless appeal on the dance floor.

Review: Kylie Minogue still remains just about Australia's premier cultural export. She is now up to a rather impressive 16th studio album with Tension, which is her first decent-sized body of new work since the 2020 disco, dance and pop album Disco. This one has a hint of electro-pop to it but it's still rooted in glossy, accessible, happy dance sounds that will be popular at weddings for decades to come. Dutch DJ and producer Oliver Heldens has linked with Kylie for one of the better tunes, '10 Out of 10', which is a mix of 80s, 90s and 00s eurodance.

Capitalising on the snappy production that electrifies tracks like the breakout viral hit 'Padam Padam', this double-vinyl release provides extended versions of the album which lets the tracks ring out for the run time they truly deserve. It also means all 11 tracks are now in a form better suited to drawn-out blends, which will no doubt satisfy the DJs amongst Kylie's considerable fan base. '10 out of 10' indeed.

Body Language remains one of Kylie Minogue's finest records, in particular finding some truly inspirational crossover between the Aussie pop queen's immaculate voice and a more sultry kind of club music. When an album opens up with a track as perfect as 'Slow', you know you're in for a treat. There are of course many different sides to the record, and there's space for different stylistic approaches besides the floor fillers, but it's the likes of 'I Feel For You' with its cut-up disco loops that give Minogue the backing she deserves to bring the club to life. This edition of the album comes pressed on blood red vinyl, all the better to set pulses racing.

Review: American singer and songwriter Janelle Monae dropped her second album The Electric Lady back in 2013 and it was a fine follow-up to the critically acclaimed debut she broke through with in 2010. Critics again fawned over its songwriting and progressive soul style with influences of hip-hop, gospel, jazz, rock, pop and reggae. Dystopic cyborg concepts again defined the album with genre experience and plainspoken words exploring plenty of personal and emotional territory with guest appearances from high-profile names such as Miguel, Erykah Badu, Solange and Prince.

Review: The work of American singer and songwriter Janelle Monae is being reissued now and for good reason - it has more than stood the test of time. After her second album The Electric Lady from 2013 reappeared back in June we are now traded to a limited edition clear vinyl version of Dirty Computer which was originally released back in 2018. It was the first one not to follow the Cindi Mayweather Metropolis narrative and moved away from her early psychedelic vibe towards a more pop, funk, hip hop and r&b style that also draws on trap, new wave and Latin. It was nominated for two Grammy Awards and got widespread critical acclaim for its celebration of queerness, female power, and self-worth.

Review: Supposed Former Infatuation Junkie stands as Alanis Morissette's most intriguing album. Following the massive success of Jagged Little Pill, which became the tentth best-selling album of all time, Morissette faced immense pressure to replicate its style, but Supposed Former Infatuation Junkie landed like an autumn leafilargely unnoticed but deeply affecting. The album is a complex collection, often pulling Morissette in various directions, making it less cohesive. Morissette's voice remains its strongest feature, resonant and more mature than on her previous work and tracks like 'Baba', with its pre-nu-metal fury, and 'That I Would Be Good,' a heartfelt ballad, showcase her considerable range. 'Thank U' and 'UR' hint at the direction of her next album, while 'Would Not Come' explores trip-hop influences. Morissette's most compelling work and definitely worthy of rediscovery.

Yumi is a vocal coach and former singer who was active from the late 70s and through the 80s before opening her own Murata Yumi Vocal Training Room in 1991 and teaching ever since. This long-player was a later one out of the seven she released in all and is one of her most popular as it mixes up fusion, new wave, funk, pop and jazz across synth sounds. These are enjoyable and sophisticated sounds from this talented vocalist.

Review: Mxmtoon is a self-made superstar. She's brought the world's attention to her art through being compelling as a Youtuber and Twitch stream icon. Off the back of her endearing social engagement and community building abilities, now she has a fully-fledged music career and is touring the globe. And it all started in her bedroom. Although her audience has grown considerably since she first started out home broadcasting, her personable charm and intimate singer-songwiter style remains intact on Liminal Space, which is Mxmtoon's third studio album. That said, Mxmtoon hasn't been afraid to experiment with arrangements in the studio and embellish that folk-pop core. 'I Hate Texas' is a soaring pop ballad with an atmospheric wall of sound begging for rotation on daytime radio. Elsewhere, the gentler numbers, 'Rain' and 'Elevator', are steeped in Americana, which offers a ye olde charm to the otherwise breezily modern pop sound.
