Review: Last year, the Expansions label kicked off a wonderfully intriguing 10" series featuring classics from soul music's rich canon complemented by contemporary cover versions and so far it's seen Blue Note troupe Quasimode tee off against Johnny Hammond and Bembe Segue challenge Norman Connors. A third edition duly arrives and hints Expansions are really enjoying the creative challenge the concept allows them with the jazz funk classic "Zaius" from Eddie Russ joined by a cover from the celebrated UK funk veterans Incognito. Originally appearing on the 1976 LP See The Light, "Zaius" is a blinding example of why Russ is described a master of the keyboard and it's complemented well by Incognito's B Side cover which appears on vinyl for the first time. Don't sleep!

Review: Marvin Dash and Lowtec combine to serve up some house grooves here that perfectly embody the Workshop sound. They are lovably loose-limbed, dusty and ramshackle, and almost feel as if they may fall apart at any given moment, but that is the joy of them. Instead, they keep you locked amongst rickety drums, frayed pads and imperfect little vocal hooks that bring the soul. 'Track 1' does that with a hazy feel, 'Track 2' is more one out with a dubby undercurrent and sustained keys and 'Track 3' brings little more prickle and drive, like a super raw Omar-S track. 'Track 4' is all about the prying, bulbous bassline that unfurls with a mind of its own beneath DIY percussive sounds.

Review: We've encountered a few Woodstock '94 live albums in recent months. 30 years on, and the festival remains one of the most ill-conceived, poorly executed and abhorrently capitalist failures the live music scene has ever witnessed. When you cram 350,000 into a site aimed at half that, don't think about infrastructure, overcharge on everything and then stand idly by as a revolution begins to unfold, only responding when things become a life or death situation, how do you expect to be remembered? At least people actually played the event, though, unlike the likes of Fyre, which never even managed to get started. And the lineup for 1994's cash-in on the legendary New York State gathering was decent in many ways, Aerosmith stepping up at the height of their commercial fame to deliver a typically spectacular show of mainstream rock & roll with blues roots. Here's the recording.

Review: Over three decades since it first landed like a glitter-covered brick on 90s dancefloors, Haddaway's 'What Is Love' returns in a newly remastered edition i and it still hits like heartbreak in a club bathroom at 2am. Originally released by the Trinidad-born, Germany-based singer in 1993, the track remains an unmatched high watermark of eurodance: emotionally grand, melodically undeniable and rhythmically bulletproof. The remaster elevates the sound without overcooking it, keeping the bass taut and the synths sharper than ever. This new 10" release pairs the remastered 7" and 12" mixes with three more Haddaway essentials. 'Rock My Heart' is all turbocharged joy, while 'I Miss You' slows things down into something softer, almost wistful. 'Sing About Love', a lesser-known cut, benefits most from the fresh polish i suddenly blooming into full pop spectacle. It's a brand new release with one foot in club history and the other in now, reintroducing Haddaway's iconic anthem to a new generation while giving long-time fans the sonic upgrade they didn't know they needed. There's sincerity here that still feels bracing i love hurts, sure, but it also bangs. Put simply: if this is what nostalgia sounds like, we're fully on board.

Review: Following his powerful Waveforms 13-14, Aural Imbalance returns to ASC and Presha's 90s jungle inspired imprint with 15-16. As always with the label, the tracks are just numbered and as always with Simon Huxtable's AI alias, there's a full focus on the drums and powerful sense of atmospherics. 15 slaps hard with choppy breaks while an ice cold pad whips up early Tango & Ratty or Krome & Time vibes. 16 is a little more driving and looser, more Justice and Modern Urban Jazz in its flavour. Both hit the spot. Make sure you do, too.

Review: Torbay's Simon Huxtable delivers another deep experience with this two-track release that shows off his mastery of atmospheric drum and bass. With a career spanning over three decades and more than 100 releases, Huxtable's touch remains as refined and emotionally resonant as ever. 'Waveform 13' opens with a classic amen break, balanced by lush, spacious pads and a liquid sensibility that merges the raw energy of jungle with the calm of ambient textures. On the flip, 'Waveform 14' is a melodic jewel. It glides through dreamy soundscapes, awash in harmonics and detail, with that signature Aural Imbalance smoothness. There's a quiet euphoria embedded in its flow, evoking a sense of peace without losing its dancefloor backbone.

Review: With the Waveforms series, spacefaring drum & bass titan ASC moves away from the pure cosmic thematics for a much more formal take on his craft. Having released these tracks in wavy serial form since at least the end of 2023, specially on 10", these 'Waveforms' could be said to track a tidal movement in ASC's psyche, with the releases therein following his many capricious oscillatory whims i.e. as he sees fit, whether in response to lunar cycles or otherwise. Still, that hasn't stopped him from releasing over three additions to the series, though: now, waveforms 11 and 12 emerge. Both tracks extirpate ASC's sound as something purely formal - without the usual metaphysical or outer-spatial fetishisms - yet still take up huge amounts of bandwidth (though not to the point of sounding undynamic) and stir up a primal rancour in us by way of militant techstep on the A, and string-baked Arcadian amens on the B.

Review: The Waveforms Series hears many a drum & bass titan outside of their usual comfort zone, encouraging them to explore sound-regions not dissimilar to their usual output, yet without the thematic accoutrements, instead as a means to purely ponder the form of sound itself. Here the label welcomes Melbourne-based producer Kloke to the fore for their ninth and tenth selection: both tracks bring tympanic tremors and echoic bass-boings to an otherwise shifting palette, one that never settles into the potential banalities of breaks nor the predictabilities of jungle percussion. '09' is melancholic enough, veering effortlessly between teary night-bus-ride padwork and aggro shellage, while '10' melds the two, bringing extra filter-happiness on the drums and arpy ardour on the synths.

They say they are on a mission to dive deep into the menacing world of early 90s jungle and cook up tunes reminiscent of that era and then serve them up lovely slabs of 10" wax. And right from the off the man who never misses, Tim Reaper, transports us back to the driving breakbeats and raw energy of that time with a pair of tunes that layer up a flurry of snares and booming low ends with wiry synths the sense of futurism that still holds true to this day. Review: Waveforms is as a brand-new label from ASC and Presha who are already well known and respected for their work with Spatial/Auxiliary and Samurai Music. It's a new outlet that will specially tap into the sounds of 90s jungle and serve up new tunes on 10". Tim Reaper has been behind one, and Eusebeia is now on this one on blue-marbled vinyl. A-side cut 'Waveform 05' is a cavernous cut with pulsing bass and spine chillingly ethereal vocals up top while 'Waveform 06' keeps the pressure on with more throwback jungle realness and unrelenting breakbeat pressure.

Review: There's seemingly no end to ASC's offerings to the drum & bass world and so it continues on this beautifully packaged black splattered yellow 10" from the Waveforms series. 'Waveform 03' is an airy jungle excursion with explosive amens set off against vast expanses of pads, while 'Waveform 04' locks into a sleeker, techier approach where the icy atmospherics have more space to stretch out. No one is even close to the quality and quantity of ASC, and this is yet another essential addition to his huge legacy.

Review: Endell Street returns with a strictly limited 10" that features some rare gems that were originally produced back in the early 00s by Timmy S. Plenty of heads will know these have been expensive to cop on the second-hand market but now they have been restored and remastered by Yossi Amoyal in collaboration with Eukahouse's Nils Hess. Deep tech house doesn't get more authentic than this with the slick, driving drums and nocturnal pads of 'Wake Up' and the more percussive darkness of 'A Trip To London' both sounding superb.

Review: Entrancing deep techno from Bristol's Moth Club, embracing the umbral charge of longtime producer How Do, a recent populariser of the sound. 'Void' and its '128 Version' carry an essence of the original dub techno sound and its emphasis on atmosphere, though there are fewer percussive knocks or scrapes here; the track is more a sustained tonic glom of energy, and alludes cleverly, preconsciously, to the more UK-bass informed B-side, with its echoic vocals almost barely perceptible as such until we flip the record over.

Review: **CLEAR VINYL RE-PRESS** Only 21 years of age when this was recorded, Ólafur hails from the suburban Icelandic town, Mosfellsbær, just a few kilometres outside Reykjavík. He as immersed himself completely in the world of delicate symphonic compositions in a near weightless orchestral undertaking. Mixing strings and piano with loops, ambiance, electronics and beats, his music fits into the Erased Tapes catalogue like a piece of a jigsaw puzzle. Debut album 'Eulogy for Evolution' took the listener on a journey, representing different periods in life, from birth to death. The first pressing of the follow-up EP ?Variations of Static? sold out on his winter tour already and will now be available in stores. Review: Mutual Rytm deals in proper techno that does the basics well and doesn't worry about modern fads. 'Surface' is the standout here - it has brilliantly bubbly synths rippling in sync with the hunched drums and bold bass notes. It works perfectly on both head and body and so does 'Blush' though with a more sleek, straight-ahead groove and minimal percussion over the echoing claps. 'Grainy' shuts down with another stylish techno bent and confirms Dold to be a vital voice in the current underground.

Review: The Top Secret label keeps things tight once more with a pair of very different jams, but both are going to get huge reactions when dropped at the right time. U first is 'Get Criminal' which is a rework of an MJ classic with his smoky vocals reusing by scene else in a more unsettling fashion and the original drums run through with some futuristic and molten melodies. On the flip is 'Eurotrance', a good old-fashioned piano rave-up with belting vocals, trance synths and euro dance drums. Lovely, fun, accessible and effective.

Review: Australian DJ and producer Dave Mathmos serves up an obscure edits entree, sampling/reworking a whopping seven disco cuts from the late 1970s and early 1980s, but adding just enough modern flair to essentially make them his own. A well-rounded, sticky quality is heard on this septagonal crock of heaters, with the downtempo slink-funk of 'Late At Night' and the equally sumptuous, string-backed plod of 'Wonderful Feeling' remaining our highlights.
