Review: A compelling selection of unreleased tracks from influential Italian artists and producers who continue to shape the underground electronic scene. The project features a mix of electro, synth-pop and new wave, each track pushing boundaries and exploring new sonic frontiers. Rimini Metafisica, led by Paolo Gozzetti (known for Sigma Tibet and Italoconnection), presents a fresh exploration of sound, while TenGramsione of the Piatto brothers' aliasesidelivers dark, minimal synth with an essential edge. Diego Montinaro, aka Sandiego, contributes a cybernetic ballad, while Mono Han, another Piatto project, shines with bright, authentic synth-pop, powered by a Linn Drum and Roland Jupiter 8.Other standout contributions include Deep Field, a synth-pop venture from Danilo Carnevale and Castelli's new-wave disco track. Fogli and Ventura's collaboration brings isolationist minimal synth, while Through Twelve offers a post-punk-synth-pop blend with contemporary flair. Body System, a collaboration between Enrico Colombo and Ventura, aims to revive the EBM sound and Italoconnection, with Francesca Gastaldi, presents a "lost" track reinterpreted by TenGrams in a Kraftwerkian style. Spittle Italy continues to bring out some excellent compilations for their followers.

Review: Encore has been remastered from the original tapes and features 11 compositions by Arthur Verocai who was joined by the legendary Azymuth, Ivan Lins and a nine-piece string section. The album was a long-awaited follow-up to his 1972 debut so bridges 35 years and bottles up Brazilian influences with American soul and cinematic experimentation. Initially overlooked amongst his wider canon, Verocai's debut gained cult status thanks to Far Out Recordings' Joe Davis who rediscovered it in the late 80s. In 2004, producer Dave Brinkworth brought Verocai back to the studio to reignite his musical brilliance. A master arranger, Verocai's work with Brazilian legends shaped his visionary sound and have helped to cement him as a timeless force in music history.

Review: In 1976, seven Cabo Verdean musicians going by the name Voz Di Sanicolau gathered in a small recording studio in Rotterdam where they laid down an album of fearsome coladeira songs inspired by the music of their home island of Sao Nicolau.
The album took only a few days to record, which may explain the unexpected urgency that fires each track. Treble-soaked electric guitar lines snake back and forth through percussion-and-cavaquinho driven rhythms rooted in the sound of the islands established by the previous generation of Cabo Verdean emigres; subtle keyboards wash through the background, and the vocals, traded between Joana Do Rosario and To-Ze, alternately push the music forward and soar above it. The resulting album is both deeply felt and fiercely executed, and in its grooves one hears the sound of some of the finest Cabo Verdean musicians of their era locked in complete unity of purpose.
It should have been the beginning of something extraordinary; but the pressures of making ends meet forced the musicians back to their day jobs, and Voz Di Sanicolau vanished as quickly as they had appeared, leaving their lone album, Fundo de Mare Palinha, as sole proof of their existence. Forty-four years later the album sounds as fresh as it did the day it was recorded. As bringing overseas artists to the UK grows increasingly difficult, this record bridges cultural and generational gaps while capturing the vibrant energy of live collaboration post-Covid-19. Conceived by Waaju bandleader Ben Brown, the album features his expansive arrangements of traditional Gnawa songs and blends Bekkas' musical prowess with Waaju's signature grooves and trippy delays. Review: Narada Michael Walden is now 71 years old and has enjoyed a hugely successful career, with his CV boasting extensive work with Quincy Jones, years spent playing with jazz-funk greats, a stint as journey's drummer, and - perhaps most significantly - production credits on huge 1990s releases by Whitney Houston, George Benson and Mariah Carey. Yet instead of retiring or resting on his laurels, he's turned to writing, recording and producing his own music. Euphoria is an undeniably funky, accessible and pop-tinged affair, with Walden adding his own vocals to backing tracks that sit somewhere between 21st century revivalist disco, nu-disco, prime Prince and Radio 2-friendly AOR pop. As you'd expect from someone with his contacts book, there are some high-profile guests dotted across the album, most notably Carlos Santana, Sting and Stevie Wonder.

Review: Some two years after helping launch Favorite Recordings' reissue-focused SOL Discos imprint, label co-founder Waxist returns with a second volume of "Message In Our Music", a compilation focused - like its' predecessor - on little known "modern soul" from the late 1970s and early '80s. It is, of course, packed to the rafters with rare, slept-on gems, the majority of which change hands for silly money online. Review: We love an album with a nice specific remit and they don't come much more specific than The Love Magician Archives - Disco - New York City 1978-79. Vol.2. It is the latest project on Past Due to involve Weeks, who signed with the label back in 2019 and since then his work as a singer, songwriter, musician, and producer has been showcased for all and proven what a key player he was in the New York disco, boogie funk and house scenes and beyond from the late 1970s to the 1990s. It came on several different labels and as part of various different groups and now comes a second collection of it that is just as good as the first.

Review: By day Richie Weeks worked at the post office, but by night he was a singer, songwriter, musician, and producer. He has a huge impact on the New York disco, boogie funk and house scenes from the 1970s and well into the 1990s. He released on plenty of different labels and now this collection shines a light on a bunch of his previously unreleased tunes. They are all served up in a DJ-friendly format and focus on his work in 1978 and 79 and they soon take you back to the sound of New York nightlife at that time even if you didn't live it the first time around. Like Volume 1, these are well-crafted songs with slinky basslines and infectious grooves.

Review: For their latest red-hot reissue, the admirable Be With Records takes us back to Paris in 1979 and the sole album by Who's Who - one of the numerous aliases of songwriter, musician and producer Daniel Bangalter, AKA Thomas Bangalter of Daft Punk's dad. The apple doesn't fall far from the tree, right? The six tracks showcased on the eponymous set are very in keeping with French disco of the period, with attractive (and then cutting edge) synthesiser sounds being combined with glassy-eyed male and female vocals, infectious "walking" basslines and Cerrone-esque drums. Highlights are plentiful, from the peak-time disco joy of the tropical-tinged "Palace Palace", the Moroder/Patrick Cowley-influenced mid-tempo spaciness of 'Hypno Dance', to the Tata Vega style jauntiness of 'Roll kacky Roll' and the fantastic 'Dancin' Machine'.

Review: WhoMadeWho, consisting of Tomas Hoffding, Tomas Barfod and Jeppe Kjellberg, are constantly developing and refining their sound. Launching their new imprint The Moment, their new self-describedly EP marks a "gateway to new possibilities for music creation and discovery". They embark on this enterprise by way of Kiss & Forget, which begins with a filmic epic song for strings and techno pulse - 'Saturday' - whose two parts set the scene of a romantic diversion in sound, yet ultimately one tempered by loss and entropy. The album moves just as synthpoppy and progressive at points too, from the ensuing 'Love Will Save Me' with, RY X to the rapturous electro-synth stretch that is 'Miracle'.

Review: Trinidad's Wild Fire was a popular local group that formed in the 70s and disbanded in 1985. They amassed plenty of varied tunes after their name change from the Sparks, a name they had as far back as 1962. They were a house band at clubs like Disco Tracks and Upper Level so knew how to get a party going with their hot mix of Caribbean sounds, disco and funk. This Dance Hits album is a great collection of their more dance-friendly material. Some are slow burners like 'Check It Out' which brings racial issues to the fore and the more sunny funkers like 'The Rebels.'

It was originally self-released back in 1980 on their own self titled label and now comes on nice heavyweight vinyl, which is just what it deserves. The band was well known in their day as leaders in their field thanks to famous performances all across Trinidad, Tobago, the Caribbean, US Virgin Islands and French Guadeloupe. The dropped four albums in all and plenty of top-selling singles and this one is one of the best - a fine mix of funk, soul and disco with glorious grooves and magical melodies as well as buttery smooth vocals.

The band was well known back in the 80s thanks to performances all across Trinidad, Tobago, the Caribbean, US Virgin Islands and French Guadeloupe. This is the best of the four albums they released - a warm and immersive blend of funk, soul and disco. .
