Review: Tomoyuki Trio's second album is now out, featuring Tomoyuki Aoki, Mike Vest, and Dave Sneddon, following their debut album Mars on Riot Season. Tomoyuki Aoki, the founding member and guitarist of the legendary Tokyo psych band UP-TIGHT, leads this powerful trio. Known for their reverence in the Japanese psych-rock scene, UP-TIGHT’s music channels the spirit of icons like Fushitsusha, White Heaven, and the legendary Les Rallizes Dénudés. Shitsuren, the trio’s latest, takes their sound into even darker, heavier territories. With super-fuzzed guitars, melancholic ballads, and grinding, distorted epics, the album plunges deep into stoner psychedelia. Across two sides, the album delivers hypnotic guitar work, numbing rhythms, and a ferocious intensity that demands to be played at maximum volume. This release sees the trio exploring the shadowy depths of their sound, reminiscent of the overwhelming, locked-down intensity found in the works of Okhami No Jikan, Asahito Nanjo, and Musica Transonic. Review: If you deep dive into online information about this somewhat mysterious Tool live release, you can start to piece together some facts from the mythology. The thing we are most certain about The Pepsi Challenge: Colorado Broadcast 2002 Volume One is that there are many theories pertaining to what it is and whether it's a bootleg or not. Certainly this has nothing to do with the Pepsi Challenge per se, but rather the title refers to where the album was recorded. The year was 2002, the place Denver's Pepsi Center, now known as Ball Arena. Here, mighty metallers Tool stopped by on what was a mammoth tour and delivered what several fan forum posts suggest was the best date of the lot. We're not sure how many of the shows the OPs attended to make that assertion, but we do know that this LP sounds like it was an incredible night.

Review: Trying to find reliable information about The Pepsi Challenge: Colorado Broadcast Volume Two isn't easy. In fact, it's almost like the Holy Grail search. That's if the Holy Grail was a quest for details about one of very few live recordings by almighty US rock dons Tool. Definitely rarer than the steak you still dream about from that time you spent far too much money on a mains, but it was worth it, other than that we're coming up short on certainties. One thing we do know is this was recorded at Denver, Colorado's Pepsi Center, now Ball Arena, home of the Denver Nuggets basketball team and an 18,000 capacity venue. According to several fan forums, the show took place in 2002 and is remembered as one of the best on the band's tour that year. Recorded live for FM radio, it's now made its way onto wax, and reflects the power and majesty of these guitar icons.

Review: Acclaimed Japanese artist Yuji Toriyama's self titled album has long been hard to find. It now gets its first ever official issue outside of Japan and what a joy it is. The man was known for his work on TV, film and game sound design but also dropped this one in 1993 and it is a sublime fusion of Japanese jazz-rock with smooth melodies and catchy grooves. A perfectly retro-future record full of 80s nostalgia and ripe for sun drenched beaches and lounge bars alike. Whether you're a die-hard fan or this is the first time you have been enchanted by the sounds of Toriyama's music, you will keep on coming back for more this summer and beyond.

Review: Devin Townsend was always going to have his work cut out with whatever came along next. 2019's Empath was a striking record for many reasons, but none as vivid or inescapable as the sheer scope of the thing. Capable of painting many images with broad-yet-specialised genre brush strokes, to say Lightwork had monumental expectations foist upon it while still at the conception stage is putting it mildly.
Finally, then, the difficult follow up has arrived. And, reassuringly, this is no disappointment. Yes, to an extent it lacks the scale and vision that went into its predecessor. Nevertheless, it's classic Townsend stuff, delivering dynamic metal with elements of industrial by the track-load, rarely pausing for breath among the fury, grit, and impassioned emotions. More evidence to back up the artist's legendary status.

Review: Zak Olsen, the mastermind behind the guitar work of Australian doom psyche band Orb, unveils his eagerly awaited solo project, Ghost Notes, under the Traffik Island name. Review: There's a lot going on here, and a lot of pure goodness at that. Fans of the Soul Jazz imprint rarely shut up about the label's output quality, and this latest LP from Trees Speak - their second to date - is a case in point. A record that sounds as though it was raised on some of the finest outsider music from the 1960s, 70s and 80s, the whole thing is saturated in pop references but doesn't come across forced or lazy.
You don't have to listen hard to hear the kind of proto-electro and Krautrock that came from the likes of Can, Popul Vuh and Neu!, John Carpenter's movie scores or traits of the No Wave movement that took subterranean New York by storm a few decades ago. Stylistically, the result is a sonic place that has as much attitude as it does edge, equal parts grit and groove, funk and rock, soul and sleaze.
