Jeff Barnes/Tommy McCook/The Supersonics - "The Rooster" (2:47)
Tommy McCook/The Supersonics - "The Saint" (3:06)
Review: Historic British label Harlem Shuffle Records reissue a rare rocksteady track by the Jamaican singer Jeff Barnes, backed by the Jamaican band Tommy McCook & The Supersonics, here. A single-sided 7" vinyl comes with but one dubby audio-delight: the original 1970 version of 'The Rooster', a catchy, whistlingly haunting but no less upbeat song produced by Duke Reid and first released on his eponymous Duke Records label. Harlem Shuffle now add it to their catalogue, which charts only the best in ska and rocksteady.

The Dynamites - "Got To Work" (3:05)
Review: Only Roots come through with a classic wedge from Barry Biggs. These pure vibes first came in 1976 and on this package you're also treated to the Clarence Wears guitar piece from the same year, plus a couple of spicy dubs. "Work All Day" is a golden offering with an aloof and soulful vocal that drifts up top like a wispy cloud on a summer's day. Muted chords enrich things and the natty riffs keep things subtly funky. That original Wears guitar piece is a real heart wrencher - the guitar rings out into the sky with oodles of reverb giving it even more poignancy.

The Chosen Few - "I Love The Way You Love" (3:46)
The Groove Master - "I Love The Way You Love" (3:52)
Review: For their latest missive, Rock A Shaka have decided to offer up a new pressing of The Chosen Few's early '70s classic "I Love The Way You Love", a slab of languid, soulful sunshine recorded at a time when reggae as we know it today (rather than rocksteady or ska) was still a nascent musical form. While the original vocal version has featured on a number of the Jamaican band's albums over the years, the accompanying flipside "Version" by producer Prince Tony Robinson AKA The Groove Master has previously been frustratingly hard to find. It's worth picking this up just to get it, as Robinson's additional musical flourishes - think Tommy McCook style sax, fluttering flute solos and harder rhythm guitar - lift the band's fine riddim to even higher heights.

Review: Timeless digital roots and dub from The Disciples here featuring the late Jamaican singer Creation Stepper, who i most famously well known for his iconic 70s roots reggae classics. This release includes a fresh take on Stepper's 1978 track, 'Kill Nebuchadnezzar' and it is paired with another vocal gem, 'Ozone Layer,' plus two powerful dub versions. Originally mixed and produced by Russ D in The Disciples' studio in 1991, this music finally saw the light of day in 2011 on the Disciples Vintage label where it quickly sold out. Now back on a great sounding 12", this is a must for roots and dub heads.

King Deadly - "Joshua A Mek Riddim Run" (2:46)
Review: Having already delivered a multi-artist EP of Reggae Dynamite earlier in the year, nostalgia-fired producer Neil Anderson serves up a speedy sequel on his popular Original Gravity label. Toaster Melbourne Douglas kicks things off with the ska-flavoured cheeriness of 'Rudy Skanking on the Moon', before returning later in the EP with slowed-down, rocksteady style reggae fuzziness of 'Rude Boy Don't Fight'. Elsewhere, label regulars (sorry) the Regulators deliver a high-tempo, Hammond-heavy instrumental workout (the excellent 'Caymanas Park Rocket'), while King Deadly layers languid organ solos over a more dub-wise groove on EP standout 'Joshua a Mek Riddim Run'.

Review: If you're on the hunt for Jamaican classics from the 1960s, you could do worse than copping this double-header from the combined talents of Alton Ellis, vocal group the Flames, Phyllis Dillon and the era's most prolific backing band, Tommy Cook and the Supersonics. On side A you'll find 'Rock Steady', a hugely influential rocksteady gem that features Ellis' encouraging us to dance atop a weighty, horn-heavy riddim track. Over on the flip Phyllis Dillon takes over lead vocal duties on another Treasure Isle gem from '67, 'Rocking Time'. This one is even more club-ready, with McCook's cheerful horn arrangements catching the ear.

The Soul Vendors - "Just A Bit Of Soul" (3:06)
Review: Alton Ellis' "I'm Still In Love" is one of Jamaica's most famous songs. It has a rich history, too, that was the inspiration for Althea and Donna's 1997 smash "Uptown Top Ranking" and here it gets a loud-cut 12" pressing that allows it to soar. It's a track full of longing, with dusty keys and a natty bassline finished off with gorgeous vocals. The flipside houses the Soul Vendors' "Just A Bit Of Soul" featuring Jackie Mittoo. It's a more upbeat ditty with bumpier drums and jazz flecked keys to get you grooving.

Review: The latest 45 on the revitalised Soul Beat label, which was first active in the 1970s, offers up some serious buried treasure from producer, musician and vocalist B.B Seaton. Both tracks originally featured on an ultra-rare, white label 45 that slipped out in Jamaica way back in 1969. The A-side, 'Funny Feeling', features Seaton's celebrated trio, the Gaylads, offering fantastic group harmonies and exquisite delivery of Seaton's loved-up lyrics over a chunky rocksteady riddim. Over on the flip you'll find a fine instrumental from the Conscious Minds ('Something New'), which Seaton later reworked to become the basis of Ernest Wilson's 'I Know Myself'.

Easing (8:04)
Easing (version) (6:49)
Review: George and Glen Miller are undoubtedly best known for their West End Records released 1982 boogie-soul classic "Touch Your Life". They released plenty of other records that flitted between soca, reggae, disco, and - in the latter stages of their career - electrofunk. "Easing", which appeared at some point at the turn of the '80s on London label Third World, remains one of their most potent releases - and, in its original form at least, formidably hard to find. This Soundway reissue wisely replicates the track list of the original release, beginning with the title track - a deliciously percussive, musically intricate chunk of peak-time disco smothered in sharp, Afro-funk style horns and George and Glen Miller's lilting reggae-soul style vocals. The flipside "Version" strips out the vocals, allowing listeners to hear in greater detail the pair's impeccable arrangements and instrumentations (particularly the fine orchestration and rich groove).

Review: For those truly in the know, rocksteady didn't begin with the legendary producer Coxsone Dodd. If you need any evidence then check out this tidy 7" which presses up a couple of tunes from before his era really began. Originally released in the mid-sixties on Caltone, it is an early jam from The Heptones who were already showing their class by this point. 'Ain't That Bad' is a bright cut with some captivating vocal harmonies as well as majestic horn leads and grooves that recall early ska. On the flipside that comes more to life with Tommy McCook's storming 'Ska Jam'.

The Arthur 'Duke' Reid-founded label's latest must-have missive is a strong double-header. On side A you'll find "The Road Is Rough", a hazy and quietly soulful rocksteady gem from the prolific (and hugely successful) vocal group Justin Hinds and the Dominoes. The ear-pleasing musical backing on that number comes from Treasure Isle house band Tommy McCook and the Supersonics, an outfit that gets a chance to shine over on the flipside. Instrumental number "Look Away" is superb, with the band layering bittersweet horn lines and melancholic piano solos over a rock solid rocksteady riddim.

Buoyed by skinhead culture's adoption of reggae as their soundtrack of choice, he was one of the first white musicians to score a reggae chart hit in Jamaica. Review: The Lovers' Special Request EP presents a compelling selection of classic soul and reggae-infused tracks, making their debut on 12" vinyl. This collection features notable contributions from Christine Lewin, Marvin James, and Tricia Dean, with production by John Kpiaye and DJ Smokey Joe. On Side-1, Christine Lewin's 'In The Mood' reimagines Tyrone Davis's smooth after-hours classic, transforming it into a memorable female-led reggae hit. This rendition captures the essence of the mid-80s lovers rock scene, turning it into a timeless playlist staple. Marvin James follows with his soulful cover of The Spinners' 'I'll Be Around,' now reissued on vinyl for the first time. This track is paired with a sought-after instrumental mix, offering a deeper dive into its rich textures. Tricia Dean's 'Don't Let It Go To Your Head,' a cover of Jean Carn's soulful favorite, features the signature synth-led rhythms from Kpiaye and Smokey Joe. This track showcases the smooth blend of reggae and soul, rooted in the vibrant London music scene of the era. Side-2 features instrumental versions of each track, allowing listeners to appreciate the intricate production work behind these classic songs. The 'In The Mood Instrumental,' 'I'll Be Around Instrumental,' and 'Don't Let It Go To Your Head Instrumental' offer a fresh perspective on the grooves that have long been celebrated. Curated by Smokey Joe, a London DJ legend known for his extensive soca catalog and influential soul sets, this EP highlights his early work with soul and reggae, providing a nostalgic glimpse into a golden era of music.

Review: Backatcha's latest essential reissue mines the epic back catalogue of DJ-turned-producer Snokey Joe's Hot Vinyl, which during the early-to-mid 1980s released some killer, soul-fired lover's rock. The two cuts here date from that period, were both produced by Smokey Joe and guitarist John Kpiaye, and offer synth-heavy lovers covers of classic cuts. On side A you'll find Christine Lewin's fine "reggae fusion" (as she described it in a 1987 Echoes article) take on Tyrone Davis' 'In the Mood', a wonderfully sweet and soulful affair full of colourful instrumentation and head-nodding digital reggae grooves. Arguably even better is Trisha Dean's seductive, pitched-down lovers rock interpretation of Jean Carn's Philly soul staple 'Don't Let It Go To Your Head'. A sing-along gem tailor-made for sunny days and intimate nights.

First up on side A is "Joy In My Soul" by the Paragons, a vocal group best known for their rocksteady-era output. The master producer and his iconic backing band laid down many of the genre's most vital sounds and helped subtly evolve it across the seventies and beyond. This single 'Jungle Lion' came right in the midst of that in 1974. An original 7" will cost you upwards of 500 quid, and that's if you can find one. It was such a success that they've decided to repeat the exercise, recruiting Aussie rework specialist Late Night Tough Guy to breathe new life into Timmy Thomas' impassioned anti-war record and the recent subject of sped-up sampling by Drake, "Why Can't We Live Together". Typically, his version is built around a lolloping, disco-friendly house groove, onto which the original record's killer organs and vocals sit. Denshi Lenzi (3:59)
Denshi Dub (3:53)
Review: 'Denshi Lenzi' by Tokyo Riddim Band offers a splendid fusion of past and present, blending elements of Japanese reggae with contemporary dub sensibilities. Recorded and mixed by the renowned Prince Fatty in South London, this track presents a unique cultural amalgamation. Featuring three generations of female musicians from Japan, the band combines reggae drums, funky basslines, and smooth City Pop guitar melodies, creating a stellar live dub experience. Tokyo Riddim Band's emergence has been celebrated by Gilles Peterson, NTS, Pitchfork, and Bandcamp Daily, gaining recognition for their fresh take on classic Japanese reggae. Led by pianist and composer Izumi 'Mimi' Kobayashi, the band's reinvention of the Natural Mystic riddim in 'Denshi Lenzi' injects new life into the original Japanese production. With dubbed-out vocals, sirens, and electrifying e-tom sounds, the track delivers an authentic reggae/dub experience infused with a distinct UK flair.

Willie Williams & The Brentford Disco Set - "No One Can Stop Us" (version) (3:25)
Review: Yet another Studio One classic. Willie Williams was one of many artists to feature on Soul Jazz's 'Studio One Soul' series, which documented the throughline between reggae and soul in Jamaica. 'No One Can Stop Us Now' is a dreamy and wall-of-soundy slice of goodness from the mournful crooner, documenting the Jamaican dub vocalist's master plan. The song is a paean for anti-populist motivation - despite the naysayers who sit and criticise, no-one's gonna stop us now.

Review: The Specials revolutionised the British music scene in 1979 with their unique fusion of English punk and Jamaican ska. Their superb album Dawning of a New Era brings together their iconic 1978 demos, which were recorded when they were still called The Automatics, with Silverton Hutchinson on drums and before Neville Staples joined. The fine collection features raw, early versions of fan favourites like 'Night Klub,' 'Too Much Too Young,' 'Stupid Marriage,' 'Concrete Jungle,' and 'Blank Expression.' These rougher, edgier tracks reveal the band's reggae influences from the late 60s and early 70s and even mow still make for a thrilling listen from one of the UK's most vital outfits.

Review: The latest must-have double feature from the Doctor Bird archives focuses on the pioneering work of Jamaican producer and vocalist Clancy Eccles, one of the first wave of young rocksteady artists to achieve international success in the late 1960s. The first disc focuses on his work as a self-produced solo artist, backing the fantastic 1969 LP "Freedom" - a soulful, slow-burn treat - with a handful of B-sides and lesser-known singles recorded in the same period. Disc two offers up the instrumental album he produced for regular backing band The Dynamites, "Fire Corner", plus a wealth of tracks Clancy produced for toaster King Stitt and other leading Jamaican vocalists of the period, most of which have never been available before on CD.

Review: Tchiss Lopes's Stranger Ja Catem Traboi is as good a debut album as you could ever wish to hear. It is a world fusion of great rhythms, high-energy grooves, politically and socially aware vocals and reggae and funana collisions that brims with life and vitality. It was recorded in Rome after the artist spent 11 months at sea and was drawn from his personal and collective experiences of hardship, education, love and the loss of lives at sea. Though now 40 years old, the album has stood the test of time musically and lyrically and now gets a welcome reissue on CD.
