Review: Following on from last year's overdue reissue of hardcore mob SSD's 1982 debut full-length The Kids Will Have Ther Say, Trust Records keep the heat coming with an equally long awaited repress of what many fans regard to be the band's finest hour (or 11 minutes). Released the following year in 1983 and marking their first recorded output with the addition of secondary guitarist Francois Levesque, the Get It Away EP would serve as the vital stepping stone in transitioning from their frenetic thrashcore beginnings to an eventual all-out thrash metal juggernaut, with the sonic fulcrum deftly balanced for these seven chaotic cuts, including a frenzied reimagining of 'No Reply' by Buzzcocks. Available on vinyl and cassette for the first time in over four decades.

Review: There's no rock frontman quite like Greg Dulli, and even in middle age his melancholy and morally ambiguous loverman persona appears to be maturing like the proverbial fine wine. Moreover, the blend of soulful heart-on-sleeve balldeering and gritty rock-outs finds new vistas and moments of intensity on 'In Spades' - lurking somewhere between the testosterone bluster of Springsteen and the slinky grooves of Motown, yet with the addition of noisy electronic grooves, as on the opener 'Birdland,' only bolstering their arsenal. It's a treat to have this louche rogue back.

Review: For a band big enough to sell out Madison Square Garden, Alt-J still come across as refreshingly strange proposition, flirting with grandstanding euphoria just as easily as folk-tinged introspection. True to form, on the one hand 'Relaxer' is the sound of the band throwing everything but the kitchen sink - including choirs, orchestras and computer game influences alike - into their delirious melange. Yet on the other there's the same melodic lilt and reflective grace that first endeared them to a surprisingly enormous fanbase five years ago, and the sense of a band as alarmingly ambitious as they are unafraid to be intimate.

Review: Minimal Wave is proud to present The Sound of Indifference, a rare cassette released in 1981 by Aural Indifference. Aural Indifference was a post-punk studio collective from Sydney, Australia. The two principal members were Brian Spencer Hall (the M Squared in house producer) and Kevin Purdy. The cassette album, The Sound of Indifference, was released in 1981, featuring tracks such as "Theme", "Park, and "Man Am I Progressive". Their sound ranges from minimal synth, to post-punk to quirky guitar-driven electronic folk music, some of it resembling John Maus. "Theme" appeared as the closing track on The Minimal Wave Tapes: Volume Two compilation and "Park" appeared on The Bedroom Tapes compilation. Here for the first time, we are offering a reissue of the original cassette, remastered from the master tapes and complete with original artwork, limited to 300 copies.

Review: Damon Gough's millennial-era massiveness was never going to be easy to maintain. Such was the strength of his first record, preceding singles, that score to British smash hit movie 'About A Boy' and LP three, 'Have You Fed The Fish?', the Manchester maestro could have hung up his yarns then and retired comfortably. He didn't, and gradually moved towards 2010's 'It's What I'm Thinking Pt.1 - Photographing Snowflakes', a far more introverted work you needed to spend time with. So a return to the release schedule after the subsequent hiatus, perhaps presumed retired, was never going to be predictable. Take it from us, though, 'Banana Skin Shoes' is another Badly Drawn Boy album and a career landmark for more reasons than a comeback. Lyrically never more confident - even forsaking subtle metaphor for brazen emotions at times - and instrumentally innovative, intriguing hooks and curveballs abound, it could be his best to date.

Love Is All You Love
Cat: SOAKMC 182.
Review: Southampton's own bones brigade, Band Of Skulls, return with an epic fifth studio album, delivering a sweet selection of alternative pop rock versatility. The album opens with a salvo of heavier, more motley rock sounds before hitting its catchy title track halfway through the A-side. "Not The Kind Of Nothing" and "Cool Your Battles" turns out the A-side from anything too soft, with the band serving up a cooing, more contemplative and ethereal number in "Sound of You" that opens the second disc. The slightest of country and folk inspirations waver in and out of "We're Alive", with the emotional wall of sound that is "Speed Of Light" a true highlight, alongside the jamming post-punk hit: "Gold". Like James Murphy dressed up as Nikki Sixx.

Review: Don't believe everything you read - the fifth Bat For Lashes album confirms this girl (or woman) found herself musically and thematically some time ago, freeing up creative energy to explore new approaches to deliver her often mournful, always heartfelt songs inspired by personal crises and private longings. On this outing there's more than a hint of 1980s pop evident in the mix. Shades of Prince ("Feel For You"), Madonna ("So Good"), Bowie's Berlin days and electro-era Gary Numan (the stunning, infectious instrumental "Vampires") cast the record in a nostalgia that suits the sense of yearning that always seems to pervade Natasha Khan's work. Simply name-checking reference points is lazy and unfair, though. This is an incredible collection of tracks moulded in the artist's own image - bold, beautiful and instantly captivating. Then again, it would be surprising if anyone had expected anything less.

Review: It may be debatable whether B-sides still exist in the here and now, yet beneath the very slightly prosaic title of this compendium lurks the work of an outfit who - despite having essentially surfed along a very definitive wave of sun-dappled languour since their inception - are capable of delivering offcuts that are every bit the equal of most folks' hits. True, the Spinal Tap insult of 'the musical growth rate of this band cannot even be charted' could be applied to Beach House, but when their catalogue over the ten years of their existence esentially consists of a variety of themes on opiated bliss, we're only too happy to embark on the ride.

Review: Ill Communication, the Beastie Boys' fourth studio album, remains a hallmark of their creative versatility. Released in 1994, this groundbreaking record merges hip-hop with punk rock, jazz, and funk, marking a significant shift towards live instrumentationia progression from their previous album, Check Your Head. Co-produced by the Beasties and Mario C, the album showcases their talent for genre-blending, featuring iconic tracks like the explosive 'Sabotage,' the funky 'Get It Together' with Q-Tip, and the raw 'Do It' with Biz Markie. The album also includes jazzy breakbeat grooves such as 'Root Down' and 'The Scoop,' along with instrumental jazz-funk tracks like 'Ricky's Theme' and 'Sabrosa,' and even nods to their punk roots with 'Heart Attack Man.' With further contributions from Money Mark, Eric Bobo, and Amery 'AWOL' Smith, Ill Communication is a testament to the Beastie Boys' ability to innovate. Now available on cassette for the first time ever, it continues to resonate as one of the band's most diverse and celebrated works.

Full marks to anyone who, upon blind taste test, immediately jumped to the conclusion this was indeed Beck. Fear not, that's less a result of his iconic and infinitely listenable voice not shining through, and more down to what else is in these arrangements. Working with legendary studio genius Pharrell Williams (who co-produced and co-wrote), you'll also find Coldplay's Chris Martin and Georgia, US rapper and drummer Terrell Hines involved here, amongst others. Together with these names we're taken into a soaring, immersive and glittering world of sophisticated but chart-friendly anthems, from clap-a-long number "Die Waiting", to the epic space-rock closer "Everlasting Nothing".

Review: Thirteen studio albums in, and 'Colors' sees Beck maybe at his most playful and upbeat since the late '90s. Title track 'Colors' opens the albums with an immediacy that bursts out like a heavily polished 'Devil's Haircut'. The album veers off in all kinds of pop directions, from the anthemic 'Seventh Heaven', to the almost trap-like 'Wow', Beck shows he's willing to experiment and wrangle as much as possible into an album. It might not be his most contemplative record, but it's definitely his glossiest and most entertaining in a while, and promises a rollercoaster ride from start to finish.

"I Won't Run From It" however sees the pair back in their full choral beauty, presenting a song for thousands to potentially wave their hands this summer. This Big Red Machine was produced over the past two years involving many-a collaboration from New York and its artistic community, with the band themself saying: "this feels like something new-the process felt different and the outcome felt different." Check it.

Review: This collaborative effort matches up a band known for their free-flowing and repetitive instrumentation with a singer with an extremely distinctive voice and metier, yet it's testimony to a both certain magnanimous spirit in Bonnie Prince Billy, and to the invention and ideas of Chicago's Bitchin' Bajas that he doesn't dominate the proceedings on this euphonious and adventurous effort. Matching his rich tones to a free-spirited and warm atmosphere replete with deliriously strange drones and loops, out-folk shapes and a tangible communal atmosphere, these two maverick forces have conspired to create something unique and uplifting.

Collaborating with friends, playing with films in quadraphonic, using the Bitchitronics set up live and changing where the performance took place in the bar helped vary each set. Using several recording devices, all rehearsals and performances of each week were documented. Later it was all edited and mixed making these six sides a collage of the entire residency. Everything Else Has Gone Wrong
Cat: 085111 5.
Review: Don't worry, BBC fans, the title here should definitely be considered as a reference to everything other than this album. Sweeping as that is, the outfit have spent six years considering their future, going on "indefinite hiatus" following 2014's astonishing "So Long, See You Tomorrow", and offering excellent solo bits, only to return with work that's both fresh and reassuringly familiar. By now you're probably familiar with "Eat, Sleep, Wake (Nothing But You)", which forsakes the soft-edges of that preceding, sample-heavy record in favour of something more in keeping with earlier, more "live sounding" fare. There's plenty more here along those lines, not least "I Can Hardly Speak" and the title number itself. Efforts like "Let You Go" rely on glitchy electronics for impact, instrumentation that sounds cast in vivid moonlight abounds on "People People", while "Get Up" is a sultry, sax-filled anthem. This is indeed how you stage a comeback.

Review: The evolution of Justin Vernon from the broken-hearted, falsetto-voiced troubadour who emerged from his cabin to deliver his debut eight years ago to the here and now may seem downright implausible, yet the facts of the matter are this - '22, A Million' is proof positive that he is one of the most multi-faceted and enigmatic and inscrutable artists we have at our disposal, still capable of delivering heart-rending beauty in song form yet also of marrying it to wilful abstraction in a way that not only offers emotional resonance yet reflects and refracts its surrounding era to offer succour and salvation. Sing it from the rooftops, this is little short of a complicated modern masterpiece.

I Kept These Old Blues absolutely calls back to a golden age of Americana, but Bradley’s Irish lilt comes through and entwines with her faithful Southern twang to make for an endlessly charming end result. Her playing is pitch-perfect, stripped to the bone finger-picking all the better to savour the songs and the way they’re sung. This is the cassette edition of the 2023 album, which is an ideal format to enjoy these charmingly olde worlde yarns sung the way they ought to be.

Review: Singer-songwriting wrapped up in the dusty acid wash denim of Americana doesn't really get more authentic than what Bill Callahan of Silver Spring, Maryland, can deliver. His latest LP, a mass saunter through 20 tracks of smokey spoken word and lightly sung lyrics, falls upon a picturesque bevvy of humble and acoustic instrumentation. Callahan's songs croon with romance, metaphor, and folky yarns that find their place among fingerpicked guitars and light melodies that enjoy a contrast with the darker musings of Callahan's own world of experience and storytelling. It presents the artist with his first studio in some five years, and a sound that is looser than a typical Bill Callahan missive but full of melodrama that centres around life and death. Our pick, Callahan's cover of the Carter Family's "Lonesome Valley".

Review: If there were still justice in the digital age, and artists really got what was owed to them exposure-wise, Alex Cameron would be a safe bet for leftfield pop sensation. A multi-faceted songwriter, his previous two albums took us through a horror show of horrible characters and their innermost thoughts, twin roads that have somehow veered onto another course altogether for "Miami Memory". Here a much friendlier face is donned. Nevertheless, opener "Stepdad" makes intentions clear, with uptempo keyboard lines invoking the emotional qualities of mid-80s Prince. "Far From Born Again" tells the story of a "her" who's making bad choices, and the potential fallout of that, set to a Bruce Springsteen-sounding chorus, the likes of which can be found again on "Divorce". Not holding back, but instead holding a light up to a different side of his personality, it's Cameron's most positive to date and his best.

Review: Chicago's chilled out space rock collective Cave have been puttin' funk in their step for around 15 years now, with local label Drag City a trusted home to their most recent music. Having released their last two records, this third effort provides their first in five years which delivers yet again an instrumental bevy of hypnotic jams, maintaining their penchant for psychedelia that touches on '70s inspired krautrock, island percussion and of course a gluttonous amount of free jazz fusion. A recording spate in Chile has no doubt added some spice to the six tracks here with "Sana Yago" cooler than strollin' down the neon streets of south-side Chicago itself. Listen up!

'Different Days' may be bolstered by a starry list of guest contributors, including Johnny Marr, Paul Weller and members of New Order, yet what comes through clearest is this band's vivacious spirit, leading them through dreamily melancholic songcraft, effervescent grooves and melodic curlicues imbued with timeless and buoyant spirit. A band with a portrait in the attic in extremis, volleying forth with their finest work in all of two decades.

Review: If this is the first time you've stumbled upon Chastity Belt we implore you to look back on their previous three albums. That should confirm how much the band have grown, although in this case rather than reaching for higher heights the development is like the roots of a tree. Here they're pushing deeper, and leaving the listener more nourished than any previous encounter. Poor analogies aside, dark undertones marry a sense of strange tranquility. The sort of feeling you get after suffering great loss and finally having a moment to reflect without that freight train of grief. There's sadness, or at least a subtle mood of lamentation to "Elena", but it also packs love at first sight melodies. "Effort" builds a tension from beneath, as though that aforementioned great oak were trying to burst from the earth itself. Alternative, detailed rock? Perhaps, but we prefer to simply say "stunning".

There's a mass of pop culture appeal to band, and considering they surfaced early on [Adult Swim] it's no surprise maybe to see everything from mid-western emo to punk motifs alongside more cosmo R&B beats. It's an album that wears its hair up or down, experiencing softer and more introverted moments to thrash guitars and punk stances. With angst and distortion never far from earshot, the album's flex is acoustic and electronic with the imaginations of talented kids dosed up on MTV Americana coming to the fore.

Review: A power trio fronted by teenage singer-songwriter Clementine Creevy, Cherry Glazerr are already onto their second record, and it sees them building formidably on their 'Haxel Princess' debut with a spiky, sweet and incisive collection of post-punk ditties that balance out sardonic bite and melodious nous. The whys and wherefores of teenhood may be present and correct here, yet beneath the gloriously trashy and distinctly Daria-esque exterior lurks a record packed with hooks built to last. Anyone either beguiled by Courtney Barnett or still lamenting the all-too-brief life of noughties indie faves The Organ will want to give 'Apocalypstick' the time of day.

Review: With the combination of band name and album title this one's always going to be a bit of a tearjerker, packed with self-reflection and self-loathing. No regrets, though, as Greg Gonzalez muses on sensuality, the loss of those we care about, the loss of self to another and the endless yearning of the human heart. Shades of Lord Huron and a wealth of gloomy shoegazers can be felt, but even though "Cry" represents a next step for Cigarettes After Sex - edging into more minimalistic territories - it's still immediately identifiable as this band, and so won't fail to instantly resonate with avid fans. Packed with an exquisite, opiate balladry at once heartfelt and heartbroken, it's hard to tell whether this is exactly what you need to hear when living through your blue period or precisely what you shouldn't listen to. Either way, it's quiet impact is immense.

Review: Cigarettes After Sex's X's presents a stunning trip through raw, emotive storytelling set to entrancing pop melodies. Centered on a four-year relationship, the album delves deep into the complexities of love and loss, offering poignant and sometimes provocative vignettes. Greg Gonzalez's songwriting captures the essence of romantic emotions, creating a cinematic experience for listeners. Departing from their earlier influences, the band embraces a 70s/80s slow dance vibe, infusing their music with a disco-era melancholy that feels both nostalgic and contemporary. With its lush, dreamy soundscapes and introspective lyrics, X's will be another well received album from their catalogue. The cassette version adds a nostalgic touch to this already exciting listening experience.

They anchor this show as the band tear through plenty of classics live at the Flipper club. This tape release captures their performance from an FM broadcast in Sydney that summer, and it's a perfect document of Robert Smith and co. at that raw stage of their development. Opening with Faith track 'The Holy Hour' and taking in other brilliant classics from the spikier Boys Don't Cry and Seventeen Seconds this is a must-grab for fans of the band, not least those who love their post-punk leaning emergence the most.

Review: Experimental rock deities Deerfhoof ensure something will survive with their latest, adding gems to an already-bejewelled crown by way of innovation and chaos, not to mention doe-eyed beauty if you listen hard enough. A testament to the power of paring back, and the band's ability to follow their deeply textured and melodic 'Mountain Moves' album with something completely different, its among their best work to date. At least part of the aesthetic comes down to recording process - in this case the use of a built in laptop mic. Its limitations afford a distorted quality to the more intense tracks, not least those Commander-in-Chief riffs of 'Ye Saddle Babes', and the mangled drum rolls on 'Sympathy For The Baby Boo'. A trippy, rhythm-heavy and rough and ready guitar triumph.

'Phase Zero' maps out an interstellar constellation between the '60s world of The Byrds, the '70s bedlam of Jean-Pierre Massiera and the contemporary slant of recent Flaming Lips, yet at all times it boasts a widescreen sweep and wide-eyed wonderment to match its sonic playfulness and melodic sleight-of-hand, resulting in a gem for the third-eye and both ears alike.

Review: Infamous Libertines and Babyshambles frontman Peter Doherty returns with his latest project, Peter Doherty and the Puta Madres, formed by members of Doherty's touring band from his 2016 "Eudaimonia" tour. He brings with him, of note, Jack Jones - also a member of Trampolene - who shares vocal duties and guitar collaboration with Doherty on the record. Expect a ragged, not entirely inharmonious, array of spangled guitars, boot-skootin' fiddles, broken down jazz and deconstructed mega blues. A good one for those smokey nights of Laphroaig when lamenting the ups & downs of one's life and times, all spent in an irreverent tone of UK punk and blues, or as the band call it: an intimate portrait of love, loss, being lost, happiness, tragedy, addiction and the power of the human soul to transcend its darker levels

Beware Of The Dogs presents 13 fully fledged tracks with Donnelly's shoegazing vocals accented even more by her idiosyncratic Australian demeanour; Moody, bluesy, cutesy and cool, Donnelly's lyricism, while lamenting shitty tattoos, infidelity and patronising a-social behaviour, buffers a zone between tongue-in-cheek pop music, melancholic folk, to other subdued country and guitar styles. Beware of the bite.

Review: Liverpool's legendary Echo & The Bunnymen add to their 30-plus years of service to music with a new album, of sorts, that in fact delivers two new compositions and 13 other songs plucked from their vast and expansive catalog. Long-time fans will no doubt be pleased to hear the new beatless tinges given to their 1984 classic "Seven Seas", while of course the album is a perfect diving point for new audience to come to grips with the band too. Take, for example, the gnarlyish drawl of "Nothing Lasts Forever" that helps offset the Bowie-like tendencies heard in numbers like "Lips like Sugar" and "The Somnambulist". Sounds like a cliche, but seriously, still as good as it ever was.

Review: For their sixth full length album 'Violence', melancholic Birmingham alt-rockers Editors have adopted a grander synth-pop sound to frame their typically dark songwriting in. This change in direction comes from collaborating with the album's producer Leo Abraham and composer Blank Mass, who helped the band hone their electronic craft. The songwriting pairs grandiose stadium riffs with assertive synth-work; 'Hallelujah (So Low)' goes straight for the jugular with fat synth leads and lo-fi drums, and the chorus of lead single 'Magazine' balances sections of punchy electronic swagger with singalong melodic euphoria. On 'No Sound But The Wind', there's a glimpse of an earlier Editors sound, more atmospheric and spacious than the tracks that surround it - unsurprising as it's a song the band first debuted back at Glastonbury 2008 and have been re-working since. Following 2015's somewhat confused 'In Dream', Editors sound reinvigorated and confident in the direction 'Violence' is taking them in.

Review: As if The Exploited's iconic debut album needs any introduction, 'Punks Not Dead', served less as a title and more of a rallying cry and reactionary throat-punch to those who looked down their noses at the scene, regarding it as a flash in the pan movement. Establishing the Oi-punk attitude as an essential component, delving into anti-establishment and anti-army topics, as well as laying the groundwork for a plethora of vital acts to come, if ever there was a list of quintessential, integral punk records, this would reside atop of the scuzzy mountain.

Review: Perhaps LA's most well-loved postmodern troubadour, Joshua Tillman brings his third album as Father John Misty, a sprawling and theatrical epic polemic on just about all of our modern society. The quality of his writing here is far more complex and impressive, as heart-wrenching chord progressions and grandiose song structures keep the listener firmly in the palm of his hand. The album's title 'Pure Comedy' is the first stab of bitter irony here, as Tillman seems in a more serious and pensive mood than we became used to with tongue-in-cheek and self-assured previous albums 'Fear Fun' and 'I Love You, Honeybear'. That isn't to say that the album is totally humourless, but that Tillman uses it in smaller doses to antidote the cathartic and anxious emotion to far greater effect.

He's dropped ambient gems on the likes of Past Inside The Present and Modern Obscure but here serves up a superb cassette on Mystery Circles. Across eight pieces he concurs up a range of feelings from rose-tinted nostalgia on the beautifully tender opener 'The Light We Lost' to more uplifting feels on 'A Pile Of Thoughts' (feat Fu_k The Zeitgeist). 'Organism' has delicate vocal whispers from Patricia Wolf that make it all the more heavenly and a second appearance feature from Fu_k The Zeitgeist on 'Primal' is another standout.

Making a New World
Cat: MI 0569CS.
Review: In so many ways, "Making A New World" has been an age coming. A full century, in fact. The seventh album from Peter and David Brewis' rightly lauded outfit is their most ambitious, with the talented craftsmen forsaking the contemporaneous commentary present throughout much of their oeuvre in favour of adopting the position of historic documenters. Confused? No worries, let's cut to the kind of direct chase suited to their North East English roots. A highly political work, the record attempts to explain the shocking state of today's planet - and civilisation - by tracing problems back to World War I. And it makes a big impression in doing so. Opening with the field recording-esque "Sound Ranging", and then the startlingly tender piano solo "Silence/After The Fact", it's not long before the art-pop-prog starts to properly unfold, spanning a fittingly huge 19 tracks to close on the sinister-sounding and resoundingly unsettling "An Independent State". Marvellous stuff.

And with the pair garnering even more notoriety with their cameo songwriting appearing in shows like Rick and Morty, it's no surprise to hear they've delivered a special. Review: This Californian duo have attracted more than their fair share of opprobrium over their four albums to date, and this doesn't seem likely to abate with 'Hang', their boldest and most audacious effort to date. Whereas in the past their psychedelic and glam fixations have coloured their output, here they take a bold leap into showtune fervour with a theatrically extravagant selection of orchestrally embellished ditties that are as beholden to Todd Rundgren as Sondheim, and "Bugsy Malone" as Sufjan Stevens. Moreover, give that precious few other bands could come anywhere near pulling off the feat that these two manage with 'Hang', it's just worth considering that the naysayers are jealous of both Foxygen's talent and their formidable chutzpah.

Review: When bands hit album four, two things can happen - or three. Some suffer from a crisis of creativity, opting to regurgitate or, worse still, stagnate. Others opt for reinvention, with as many getting it right as going well off-piste, alienating faithful fans in the process. The lucky ones, meanwhile, hit the nail on the head with their most accomplished and complete work to date. Consider Frankie Cosmos among the lucky ones, then, not that luck had much to do with it. Recorded in their New York hometown, everything about the record feels comfortable in that there's nothing forced, and yet it engages and grabs from the off. Lilting, lo-fi rock 'n' roll odes to love, life and the genre itself, anyone who's ever wondered what Cate Le Bon might sound like having a pancake breakfast with The Orielles should grab a seat at this table.

Since 2017, this Southern California multi-instrumentalist, producer, songwriter, and visual artist has drawn a dedicated following with his remarkable albums, films, and global tours. Ginger Root's soundia polished blend of synth-pop, alt-disco, boogie, and soulireflects Lew's Asian-American heritage and love for 1970s and '80s music, including Japanese City Pop and its Western counterparts like French Pop and Philly Soul. Lew's third LP, Shinbangumi, marks his debut on Ghostly International and is set for a 2024 release with an accompanying visual album. This album represents a new chapter for Lew, showcasing his confidence and intention in presenting Ginger Root's definitive sound. Tracks like 'No Problems' and 'Better Than Monday' highlight Lew's signature style, blending diverse genres into cohesive songs. It finds Danzig extends his band's already ambitious, classically-themed project with this time the infamous Lilith, the first wife of Adam, as the main theme. The cover is a super one that features an illustration by the well known Marvel comic artist Bill Sienkiewicz. All in all, a vital reissue of a metal classic.

Review: When you use words like "prickly", "abrasive" and "uncompromising" it's rarely flattering. Consider Kim Gordon's exceptional powerhouse long form one of the exceptions. As far removed from music for the masses as you could hope for, it takes a particular talent to deliver work like "No Record Home". Labels such as punk certainly apply, but it's less about mouths gushing spittle amid the deafening screams of guitars and raucous vocals, and more about overall attitude. No change there for this co-founder of the mighty Sonic Youth then. Loud and intelligent, forthright and yet heartfelt and tender in its own unforgiving way, it's as far removed from wall of sound discordance as it is anything you could describe as remotely over-explored. Marrying the bloody-lipped electro of Peaches and body blow lows of EBM with gritty rock 'n' roll chords, those looking for originality that oozes repeatability should consider their hunt over, for now at least.

The Prettiest Curse

Review: It might just be us, but the third record from Spanish garage guitar wielders Hinds feels like a marked change of path for the rightly acclaimed outfit. It's certainly an altogether less growling and bloody-nosed affair than their first record, and to a lesser extent 2018's 'I Don't Run'. Which isn't to say this development is a negative thing. Of course not everything here sounds like the retro-pop of 'Good Bad Times', which is a colourful, upbeat and synthy introduction to their new work. 'Just Like Kids' is a far more raucous and unconventional stomper. 'Take Me Back' shows the power of pared back arrangements, echoed riffs accentuating the feeling of space. And 'This Moment Forever' is a low slung, downtrodden delight. Altogether sweeter, but still capable of knocking anyone out, if Hinds weren't already close to your heart they should be after this.

Review: San Diego post-hardcore veterans Hot Snakes return with 'Jericho Sirens', fourteen years after their last record 'Audit In Progress' and following a 2011 reunion tour. Slightly longer in the tooth but markedly reinvigorated, this comeback is an explosive powerhouse of an album - all blistering and thundering backings, coupled with Rick Froberg's acerbic commentary. The songwriting is ferocious, exhilarating and intelligent, and after working on various other projects (Drive Like Jehu, Rocket From The Crypt, Pitchfork et al) the Hot Snakes lineup is sounding stronger than ever. Accompanying this comeback, Sub-Pop also plan to reissue their back-catalogue, but if this return is anything to go by, hopefully there will be plenty more new music to come in the future.
