NX1 - "NF1" (6:41)
Stave - "Shove" (4:40)
Review: More abrasive and pitch black electronics from France's Nocturnal Frequencies camp. Their new various artists EP sees them debut on vinyl after a series of great digital and cassette releases - and in rather frightful fashion indeed! From the aufnahme + wiedergabe affilated Codex Empire who presents the brooding "Ourang Medan", the guttural analog intensity of American veteran Paul Birken's "Slipper Dimple" comprising the A side- the latter one's a respectful tribute to the old school techno sound. On the flip, a more direct and dancefloor oriented techno represents here- yet be assured that it's as bleak and metal-edged as expected on "NF1" by Spanish duo NX1. One half of Talker Jonathan Krohn aka Stave completes the carnival of lost souls here - reaching right for the jugular on his fierce IDM epic "Shove" reminiscent of the British Murder Boys' sound.

Heads & Ordinary Concrete
Review: Moopie's A Colourful Storm label launched earlier this year as an extension of the popular online platform that has hosted a rich and diverse stream of mixes from the likes of Imaginary Softwoods, DJ Nobu, Frak and Rabih Beaini to name a few. Pro-tip: do check that latter live mix from the Morphine boss! It was the archival sounds of Denial and their lost Oz classic cover of "California Dreaming" that heralded the arrival of A Colourful Storm, but this second release on the label switches the focus to more contemporary fare. Power Relations is a two track 12" of bad-mannered, f*cked up club trax from Melbourne's Nerve. The stomping, nocturnal techno of the title track is backed with a Photek-meets-Sunn O))) terror stepper entitled "Heads & Ordinary Concrete". For fans of Regis, Emptyset and Blackest Ever Black.

Authentic (6:05)
Organic (4:55)
Genetic (6:39)
Mechanic (4:38)
Review: We've extensively covered the work of Greek electronic music project Neural Network for a long time now, thanks to their compelling fusion of experimental techno and industrial music with themes of malevolent AI and/or cyborg takeover. Mostly active during the 1990s, the trio were instrumental in bringing robotic ideas to EU techno. This reissue of 'Cybernetics' is a big curio, with four new alternate takes on classic neuromantic cuts including 'Authentic' and 'Mechanic'. For those who like to sprinkle a bit of dystopianism into their DJ sets, this EP littered with sinister vocal samples scraped from future-facing TV documentaries abut cyborgs.

Aromobates NDB (8:17)
Clelia Clelia (8:31)
Review: Provocative performance artists NDB are best famed for their insanity-inspiring live shows and uncompromising, experimental sounds on labels such as Dominick Fernow's Hospital Productions. Now the Italians make the leap to the mighty DFA with two very contrasting productions; the title track is a pneumatic, droning, exercise in cyclical shamanism, developing and mutating with distorted mischief throughout. "Clelia Clelia", meanwhile, is a straight-up Latin techno jam. Pacey, percussive and sweatier than a chubby fellow in a packed sauna, it's probably the most dancefloor minded track the duo have done to date. Unique.

Track 3
Review: Whether it's a new name, a Felix K alias or a just another alias, we'll probably never know. But Hidden Hawaii Sub introduces No to their sub-roster with another soon-to-be sought after and untitled relic. "Track 1" sounds like the low-end hum of a walk-in refrigerator that's been left on for too long, while "Track 2" creatively blends granular dub techno with pitched-down drum and bass. On the EP's B-side, "Track 3", provides some quick and raw to the bone jungle beats which is almost like a Felix K dub to Sandwell District.

Imaginary Time (7:18)
Imaginary Time (Gesloten Cirkel Keep Playing remix) (6:30)
Imaginary Time '99 (Revolutionary Industrial Trance mix) (14:48)
Review: Acoustic instruments played by Charlotte Bill, "disarranged" by Nigel Ayers, Nocturnal Emissions' Imaginary Time is as much of a landmark as it is a total obscurity. The album title itself references a theory prevalent in some approaches to special relativity and quantum mechanics, a representation of time also used in certain cosmological theories. It's not made up, or unreal, but expressed via imaginary numbers. We can understand where Nocturnal Emissions were coming from with this record back in 1997, then. A strange, beguiling percussive experiment that's at once linear and yet pretty obscure. Here presented with two incredible remixes - Gesloten Cirkel's pounding but fun techno take on things, and the misleadingly-titled 'Revolutionary Industrial Trance mix', a slow building amalgamation of drums and vibe - this is strange yet totally accessible business.

Vi Sager Ingenting (2:55)
Review: Paris label Collapsing Market has scored something of a coup here by tempting Lust For Youth frontman Lars Hannes Norvide away from regular home Posh Isolation. NNN is the latest missive to emerge from his recently minted Norin alias, which was apparently established to allow for more "techno-focused" productions. The four tracks showcased here are far from straight-up techno club tracks, of course, with rhythms created from cyclical electronic motifs, rather than traditional drum machine percussion. Winding, creepy and occasionally intense, the tracks bob and weave seductively, seemingly tempting listeners to succumb to the Swede's unsettling musical vision.

Review: Roman label Raw Culture returns with a new one by elusive yet legendary duo Nostalgie Eternelle, comprised of Dieter Mauson and Stefan Heinze from Northwestern Germany. Their output between the late '80s and early '90s was heard on seminal labels such as Mindscan Tapes, EE Tapes, Infrastition and Final Muzik. Back with new material, The Face A L'Incertitude EP was recorded in Hamburg in 2019 and spans psychedelic slo-mo experimental, to early Mute Records style post-punk to chilled electronica with vocals, and is what the label best describes themselves as 'a style lesson.. by two artists with 35 years of friendship and militancy in the post-punk scene in Europe.'

Review: Continuing their uncompromising fusions of artists new and old, Contort Yourself return with a punishing array of industrial thuggery from hardware manipulators you wouldn't take home to your mother. Novacom were last seen on Slumdiscs back in 2014 and here bring a fast and gnarly rhythmic tryst to bear before JK Flesh do their own snagging dance with oppressive synths and drums twirling into a heavyweight whole. French brutalists Le Syndicat then dominate the B-side with their confrontational bastardisation of techno and industrial, making the perfect source material for Ekman to get nasty with on his remix of "Maximalist".

Review: Hurtling straight towards the abandoned power station (it's unclear whether this is a suicidal cleanup operation or a post-fallout urbex jaunt) Nuclear Waste Corp deliver their four latest, most intoxicating fruits in the form of 'Nuclear Corporation', their inaugural EP. Clearly, whichever radioactive excesses aren't used as an efficient source of energy are channelled into pure symptomatic musical joy here. Infusing the best elements of new beat, EBM and synthpop into a cohesive narrative - one that is otherwise difficult to make out, what with all that glowing green goop dripping from the narrator's mouth - the likes of 'Bad Habit' and 'Infinite Stroke' resound with the potency of a stick of plutonium yet also the erraticism of a Geiger counter, their acid lines never failing to beguile the ears, let alone cause them to mutate into post-organic pickup mics. B-sider '106 Program' drops an atom bomb on the situation with a cold, cold, nigh shivery broken whorl, while driving dungeon closer 'Unknown Desire' soundtracks the inner surfacing of a new, insatiable lust, born of a green-eyed, green-blooded envy.

Nathaniel - "Dolores Haze" (4:58)
Review: Persephonic Sirens started off with a bang earlier this year, landing on our shelves with a mind-bending EP from the dread Ancient Methods corner. The imprint is now back with two newcomers, both adept at making the same sort of tenebrous dance gear and, by the sounds of four tunes, absolutely up for the killing! Sharplines' only tune on here, "Out Of Control", bursts through the speakers like a round of AK bullets on speed, buzzing with each new loop, while "Blood Under Nails" from Nathaniel is a comparatively more broken affair. On the flip, "Lolita" is an EBM-leaning slice of industrial tech-funk, followed by the similarly off-kilter, machine-drum psych-pop of the curiously formed "Dolores Haze". Banging material from this young powerhouse!

Review: Chicago mainstay and Disctechno label head Mark Grusane reunites with Detroit's Eric Schwab for the second instalment of the Midwest Rhythms series. It's a real quality EP that takes you to the heart of the Motor City with 'Easy Strider' blending low-slung, skittering drum patterns with a classic FM bass line and hints of 303. 'Acid Hole' offers an acidic pulse that builds tension over a jacking 707 beat that is brought to life with spacey effects and on the B-side, 'You're In Danger' merges dissonant pads, plucky synths, rich bass and warped verbal warnings. The record closes with Eric's reimagined version of 'A House of My Own' which brings fresh textures to a modern Chicago house classic.

Review: As was the case with its predecessors, the third volume in VEYL's ongoing "Previously Undisclosed Rituals" series is packed to the rafters with angry, lo-fi club cuts, paranoid pagan techno and wild, mind-altering dancefloor throb-jobs. It's all of a high standard, of course, but we're particularly enjoying the drowsy late night hypnotism of Terrence Fixmer's "Always Through", the pitch-black electronic body music of The Sixteen Steps' "Tales From The Old Country", the foreboding late night creepiness of Neud Photo's decidedly trippy "Plagued By Consciousness" and the rip-snorting techno stomp of VTSS's nails-hard opener "Toxic Bleach". In a word: intense.

Review: Japanese experimenter Kouhei Matsunaga has been quietly building an exceptional discography as NHK yx Koyxen and the numerous variances. With prior NHK yx Koyxen output on PAN, Skam and Raster Noton, Matsunaga's growing alliance with Powell's Diagonal label makes perfect sense. After debuting on Diagonal last year, he's back with Doom Steppy Reverb, a fresh NHK yx Koyxen LP that expands on his fuzzy, texture-laden, leftfield techno blueprint. So, while there's plenty of industrial-influenced darkness, claustrophobic tape hiss, and redlined rhythms, the Japanese artist also includes quietly beautiful textures and hazy, looped melodies. This is most evident on the foreboding, late night swing of "Y", where the application of dub delays helps emphasize the skewed, doom-laden mood. Superb artwork too!!!

Review: Milanese percussionists Ninos Du Brasil were a surprising choice for Dominick Fernow's Hospital Productions a few years back: an imprint more usually affiliated with new wave industrial and power electronics. Their rhythmic backbone said to be derived from Brazilian carnival music where they fuse influences of punk, tribal techno and batacuda. Anyone fortunate enough to witness their electrifying live shows can attest to these disparate influences colliding wonderfully. It's yet more powerfully hypnotic, wall of sound rituals on offer with their third full length entitled Vida Eterna; however there are a few pleasant surprises too, such as on "No Meio Da Noite" where their trademark rhythms are meged with a fierce warehouse techno stomp. It calls to mind the polyrhythmic futurism of James Ruskin and Oliver Ho back in the late nineties. Speaking of which "A Magia Do Rei II" sounds like Gymnastics era Regis gone to Carnival. Elsewhere, the powerful wailing on "Condenado Por Un Idioma Desconhecido" resounds through layers of feedback and delay that reminds us of Baile funk and there's also a collboaration with the legendary Arto Lindsay.

Review: Given that Ninos Du Brasil's 2014 album on Hospital Productions, Novos Misterios, was such an intense, mind-altering thriller, hopes are naturally high for this belated follow-up. The genius of that set lay in the Italian duo's dizzying fusions of densely layered Batacuda drums, wild post-punk vocals, sticky sound effects and dark, feverish electronics. Wisely, they've retained the same blueprint on Via Eterna, sprinting through heady tribal workouts, macabre techno soundscapes, thrash-Batacuda scream-alongs, hypnotic late night throb-jobs, rolling percussion tracks and nightmarish compositions that seemingly draw on all of the above. One track even sounds like a dystopian take on the Pet Shop Boys Brasil-inspired album, Bilingual. In other words, Ninos Du Brasil is still a thrillingly unique proposition.

Review: In interviews, Alessio Natalazia has freely stated his next album would be "very different" and "very intense". That album, his first for Powell's Diagonal stable, has finally arrived, and it's as ballsy, robust and full-throttle as he promised. While it contains nods to the woozy, shoegaze and ambient influenced soundscapes that have been a feature of his previous full-length excursions, these are well hidden behind clandestine fusions of techno and industrial, surging EBM-influenced workouts, post punk-goes-post rock explorations and atmospheric analogue electronics. For those well versed in his back catalogue, Animals makes for arresting listening. As for newcomers, they'll also find much to enjoy throughout.
