Review: Granada's Cosmic Tribe know the definition of "electro" in its broadest sense; their new Xtrictly Electro comp keeps the dystopian sound endemic to the genre's most present incarnation, but refuses to restrict itself to one tempo: the standard 130-ish that has sadly infected the otherwise genius genre as a necessity. An international splinter cell of spec-ops and mercenaries are recalled from retirement here, as we hear Calagad 13, Nachtwald, EC13 and many more mechanoid ilk lay down all manner of slick utilities, making up a morbid multi-tool. 5zyl brings further lasery Lithuanian steeze on 'Vilnius Bass', whilst Spectrums Data Forces betrays the existence of a sinister corporate entity, whose business model works towards the object of instilling 'Darkness In My Head' through giant, killer mozzy basses.

Review: The Outlaw label's first compilation brings together four incredible artists, alongside label owner Mathew Oh, for a diverse and compelling techno journey. Side-1 opens with 'Horizon' by Dot & Matthew Oh, a track that blends catchy, upbeat rhythms with deep, melodic layers and spacey sound effects. The production is crisp and slick, making for an engaging start. Nicolas Barnes' 'Frames' follows with a floating, melodic dub techno experience. The track's driving beat is perfectly complemented by thought-provoking, atmospheric chords, creating a focused body and mind. On Side-2, Modernism's 'Metal Covered' offers a clever, intricate beat, striking a balance between deep and upbeat elements, making it both dynamic and hypnotic. Ian Oskadev closes the compilation with 'Clarity Of Thoughts', a track that pulses with energy, moving high-hats and a melodic core that builds a sense of momentum, delivering an uplifting finale to this excellent collection. VA Vol 1 is a showcase of quality production and innovation in techno, highlighting some of the genre's finest up-and-coming talents alongside established names.

Review: Swedish label Borft has been digging in its archives again to assemble another volume of what it sees as its most classic cuts. And we don't disagree with these, which are taken from releases that originally landed between 1998 and 1999. Egglady's- 'Prinsessan Och Agget 1' is well-swung and deftly dubbed out with lovely analogue drum sounds cutting through. Nikolas Rowland's 'Headspin' is another smooth one with molten chords and a firm low-end drive. 'Puffy Nipples' from Kord is a wonky number with an unhinged charm and stomping groove that will stand out in any set while Crinan closes with the classy and raw house, dub and tech fusion that is 'Suit 61'.

Review: Urgent electro from adept producer and DJ Munir Nadir. His third outing for a new favourite label, the Italian outfit Odd One Tape, this sawtooth croaker is an especially squelchy dance record, drawing on tail ends of minimal techno and noughts electro house, and with perhaps a tad of skweee thrown in too. 'Give Me A Second' and 'Paratoxical' use conspicuous reverb tails and flex-gurgled vocals to spoken and spelt-out effect, while the B-side's 'Sniper' is as wilfully minimal and baleful as it gets, working in a monster of a ghostly vocal underbeat. Finally, 'Flying Ladder' rounds off on a matchingly minimal euphorizer in the 4x4 vein.

Review: Silias Records welcomes Marko Nastic, a venerated DJ and producer from Serbia who could rightly claim to be one of his country's biggest underground electronic music exports. He brings peak time renegers here with tracks rooted in techno and tech such as 'Sour Pie' with its mechanical drum loops and rickety rhythms run through with blasts of electricity. 'Circuits' is smoother, deeper, more rounded in design and jazzy in melody. 'Que Rico Enrigo' is packed with well-designed sounds and a hint of Latin flair in the vocal sample and 'Clockworksx' shuts down with a thudding, persuasive and chunky tech sound with clattering percussion adding some texture.

Review: Don't forget to put on your Anorax... A new retro-futuristic outing by veteran dance music exec Neil Rushton marks his latest configuration in techno, which has kept mutant ever since the DJ broke from his infamous, 1970s Northern soul label Inferno. If Inferno was a glittery bodysuit, Anorax is like blast-protective PPE. Here Rushton welcomes Mark Archer and Chris Peat aka Nexus 21 back to the fold. Emissaries of the Salford dance music circuit, Nexus 21 have always harked a frontier-scouring, centennial vibe in sound. Their latest release is reissued from 2008, though the Network Records original only cut it to B-side: 'Self-Hypnosis' is a semiconscious auto-state in sound, bringing jam-born orchestra-stabs and sprung synth toms to a strange brew. We're left spiral-eyed.

Review: Phonik's first EP of the year features Numero 6, who has been on their radar for a while, they say, He is a French producer who aims squarely at the floor here. 'City Of Spiders' is a lumpy, unruly cut with texture synth stabs, warped bass and eerie facts all making it a twisted future sound. 'Down Bad' (Immortal mix) is a thumping cut with blasts of textured bass and an infectious groove that has plenty of bounce. 'Golden Mo' chills things out with a more cubed groove that forms the foundation for some weird and wonderful sound designs to blurt out and take centre stage. 'Je Dance' (Napoli mix) shuts down with a bit of playful disco-house invention.

The Barcelona duo of Surit and Samot have long been a part of the underground releasing on labels like Bite and Earwiggle while running their own Nexe Records. Review: If you like it deep and dubby, keep reading. Poro, Nicholas Barnes, Tm Shuffle and Monoder all work to explore exactly those types of sounds on this tenth outing for the Finnish label Vuo. Opener 'Moysiys Strip' is impossible cavernous with its rolling bass and languid chord structures, then 'Tommottos' rolls serenely on frictionless kicks and undulating bass. It's smooth like chocolate and infused with real machine soul. Last but not least, this EP of quite artists and devastating depth comes to a close with 'Limited Value'. Smeared, grainy chords arc like windscreen wipers over deft little percussive details and broad, rolling bass. Head perfecting.

Review: Portugal's powerhouse Hayes welcomes back Norbak for more low-end work that comes with plenty of intricate designs, exquisite synth work and rhythms that veer from club-ready to sound system-suited. 'Rosna' sets the tone with shimmering percussive loops and twisted electronics that ride a nice wooden, swinging groove. 'Capital (with Quelza)' is intense and pent-up techno funk, 'Grego' is a lovely broken beat workout and 'Sobreposto' is a minimal hypnotiser with a mystic atmosphere. Superbly designed stuff.
