Review: American jazz tenor saxophonist Dexter Gordon was one of the most influential early bebop musicians alongside the likes of Dizzy Gillespie and Charlie Parker. His 1962 album Go on Blue Note was not actually recorded in a club, but in a fashion in the studio that replicated that informal environment. The legendary Rudy Van Gelder oversaw proceedings at his Van Gelder Studio and had Sonny Clark on piano, Butch Warren on Bass and Billy Higgins on drums. Next to tunes Dexter wrote himself are covers of Cole Porter's 'Love For Sale' amongst other highlights.

Review: By 1962, when Dexter Gordon recorded Go!, he was already a jazz legend and a proven pioneer in bringing bebop to the tenor saxophone in the 1940s. His career had been slowed by personal struggles but signing with Blue Note in 1961 marked a powerful resurgence and led to a series of iconic albums. Go! features a stellar quartet with Sonny Clark on piano, Butch Warren on bass, and Billy Higgins on drums and highlights Gordon's boundless creativity on tracks like the tasty 'Cheese Cake' and his skilful interpretations of ballads such as 'I Guess I'll Hang My Tears Out to Dry' and 'Where Are You.' This reissue comes on nice blue and heavy-weight vinyl.

Review: Super cool jazz cat Dexter Gordon's 1963 album Our Man in Paris marked his first release from Europe and is often regarded as the final bebop album. The saxophonist gathered a quartet featuring bebop legends Bud Powell on piano and Kenny Clarke on drums and they played alongside French bassist Pierre Michelot to record this timeless work at CBS Studios in Paris. The album is defined by Gordon's commanding saxophone with the intricate rhythms of bebop that take you right back to a precise moment of musical history which marked a significant transition in jazz. It remained a defining work in Gordon's career.

Review: Dexter Gordon's 1965 album Gettin' Around captures the essence of his refined, effortless saxophone playing, coming at a time when he was back in the States after a long stint in Europe. The vibe here is smooth and unhurried, with Gordon's tenor sax at the centre of it all, surrounded by a standout crew: vibraphonist Bobby Hutcherson, pianist Barry Harris, bassist Bob Cranshaw, and drummer Billy Higgins. This unique instrumentation really shines, especially with the interplay between Gordon and Hutcherson on tracks like 'Manha De Carnival' and 'Shiny Stockings.' The whole session feels relaxed yet precise, with Gordon letting his sax sing while the band provides subtle yet nuanced backing. Highlights include the gentle swing of 'Everybody's Somebody's Fool' and the more upbeat 'Le Coiffeur,' both showcasing the group's tight but easy-going chemistry. Reissued as part of the Blue Note Classic Vinyl Series, this edition stays true to its analogue roots, mastered by Kevin Gray from the original tapes and pressed on heavyweight 180g vinyl. For fans of Gordon or classic Blue Note, it's a must-have.

His debut album Theme This is a lost classic that is now getting reissued for the first time. It was originally put out via on Gore's GorBra label and is a sensitive, introspective collection of tracks with "Shepherd" Fitz Gore, Ulrich Kurth, Gerard Ebbo, Philippe Zobda-Quitman and Lamont Hampton making up the band. Babi (15:16)
Review: As part of a large retrospective of jazz drummer Milford Graves' best works comes this new edition of one of his most coveted works, Babi. By the early 70s, Graves had more or less stopped gigging; knowing that the level of energy that he put out during most performances would be difficult to sustain over the long haul. Even so, in March 1976, Verna Gillis invited Graves to perform on WBAI's Free Music Store radio show. For the date, he chose to present a trio lineup which he had been occasionally playing - featuring two saxophonists who were dedicated to the drummer's vision: Hugh Glover and Arthur Doyle. Originally released in 1977, Babi remains one of Graves' most seminal recordings. The music played by the trio was ecstatic; this is extreme energy music, buoyant and joyful. It relied on Graves' new way of approaching the drum kit, in which he had opened up the bottoms of his skin-slackened toms and eliminated the snare. Graves' art was always unblemished by commercial interests, and this album is its finest mission statement.

PG I (18:15)
PG II (22:24)
Review: After beginning his career in the early 60s as a part of New York's vibrant Latin jazz scene, Milford Graves' focus quickly turned inward, shifting towards a practice that explored the very nature of self. From his work in the New York Art Quartet and collaborations with Albert Ayler, Sonny Sharrock and more to his important contributions during NYC's loft era - he is, simply put, free jazz royalty. In April 1966, Graves and pianist Don Pullen played at Yale University. As John Corbett writes in the liner notes, "This performance was something of a turning point for Graves. Until then he had been working in other people's bands or collective ensembles. He was phenomenally busy. In 1965 alone, he recorded with NYAQ (two LPs), Giuseppi Logan Quartet, Paul Bley Quintet and Lowell Davidson Trio, and he made his first recording released under his own name, Percussion Ensemble. Every one of these is important in its own way, but none of them quite anticipate how radical was the music that he and Pullen would unleash that evening in New Haven." Originally released on the artists' own Self-Reliance Program label, this legendary one-night performance would be split into two volumes: In Concert At Yale University and Nommo. While rooted in African rhythms, Graves' music has its own sense of time. As the drummer stated in a 1966 DownBeat interview, "Time was always there, and the time I see is not the same as what man says time is. It works by impulsion."

Review: Hardcore record collectors love a leftfield talent or outthere artistic character, and the late percussionist Milford Graves certainly fits that biting. He was one of the most unique artists of his time and grew from the states of his native New York to be known around the world for his work in the New York Art Quartet and collaborations with Albert Ayler, Sonny Sharrock and contributions to the NYC loft era free jazz scene. He linked up with pianist Don Pullen in April 1966 for a show at Yale University that marked a real turning point in that it saw him take more creative control having mostly collaborated up until then. Strap in and listen to what he had to say for himself on this fine reissue of recordings from that night.

Review: The Great Revivers have been mainstays of the Funk Night label for a decade or so now. They know how to serve up the most potent dancefloor bombs for DJs who like to make an impact and after countless 7"s to that effect, they now drop an entire album's worth of high-grade tackle. 3rd Drop from this Russian quartet takes in 12 of their most signature sounds, from the rolling and cosmic-tinged open 'Adventures Begin' via the bristling broken beats of 'Not Good, Too Bad.' There is a 60s American feel to many of these cuts as well as some more slow and sentimental moments like the organ-laced melancholy of 'From Darkness To The Light'.

Grant Green's 1963 album Feelin' The Spirit consisted of jazz arrangements of traditional African American spirituals such as 'Nobody Knows The Trouble I've Seen' and 'Sometimes I Feel Like A Motherless Child'. Given the historical weight of the music, it's no surprise to hear Green soaring high as he expresses the songs through his guitar, but as if that wasn't enough he's backed up by Herbie Hancock on piano, Butch Warren on bass and Billy Higgins on drums.

Review: It’s not often you hear titans of the golden era of Blue Note tackling the relative stricture of pop, but that’s what Grant Green did on his 1965 album I Want To Hold Your Hand. As you might well expect, the seminal jazz guitarist lead with a rendition of The Beatles classic, creating a bold abstraction of the original backed up by Hank Mobley on tenor sax, Larry Young on organ and Elvin Jones on drums. Along with the other slightly less familiar songs from the 40s and 50s, Green holds court and channels vocal lyricism into incredibly expressive guitar playing on this standout set from the accomplished peak of his career.

His sophomore LP after the big splash that was his debut, Grant's First Stand, in 1961, this one went on to cement the esteemed jazz guitarist's repertoire as a musician not to be trifled with, thanks to its demonstrable live synergy with Ben Tucker on bass and Dave Bailey on drums. Verifiably Green - in stark contrast to jazz's usual blue.

Review: Muriel Grossmann's latest offering is a radiant journey into spiritual jazz, rich with groove and emotional resonance. From the first notes of 'Pointing Out, Part I', the interplay of Fender Rhodes, Hammond B3 and Moog sets a reflective tone, easing the listener into an intimate exploration. Grossmann's tenor saxophone gracefully emerges, weaving meditative phrases supported by gentle drums and guitar, inviting quiet introspection. As the record progresses, the quartet locks into mesmerising grooves. The second track propels forward with a fiery sax solo, intricate guitar work and effervescent organ passages, held together by tightly snapping drum rhythms. The finale of Side I bursts with psychedelic energy, blending soprano sax with a vibrant, r&b-infused rhythmia dazzling reminder that spiritual jazz can exude joyful movement. Side-2 opens with an ethereal mix of Hammond tones, sparse percussion and harp flourishes, building into sultry sax lines and bluesy guitar solos, creating a lush and meditative soundscape. Flute and alto sax take center stage on the next track, a vibrant celebration of connection and joy. The closer slows the pace, a contemplative tenor solo layered over a steady rhythm, drawing the album to a reflective, uplifting conclusion. Grossmann's work pulses with warmth, community and profound beauty.

Review: Benjamin Grosvenor's latest release, the second installment in his Decca contract, showcases his exceptional talent in works for piano and orchestra. Teaming up with the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic under James Judd's baton, Grosvenor delivers captivating interpretations of Saint-Saens' Second Piano Concerto, Ravel's G Major Concerto, and Gershwin's iconic Rhapsody in Blue. While the combined choice of repertoire might seem unconventional, Grosvenor's artistry shines through, effortlessly transitioning between the diverse styles of each composer. His refined yet impassioned playing captivates listeners, whether navigating the lyrical passages of Ravel's concerto or infusing Gershwin's jazz-infused melodies with infectious vitality. The accompanying solo 'encores' further showcase Grosvenor's virtuosity, with standout performances of Saint-Saens' 'The Swan,' Ravel's Prelude in A Minor', and Gershwin's 'Love Walked In.' Each piece is delivered with exquisite precision and sensitivity, demonstrating Grosvenor's mastery across a range of repertoire.

Review: You might remember David Grubbs from Squirrel Bait, Bistro, or Gastr de Sol. Codeine, The Red Krayola, Bitch Magnet or The Wingdale Community Singers. New wave or punk. His own output or that of the label he runs, Blue Chopsticks. Whatever reference rings truest, the American composer, guitarist, pianist and vocalist is an enigma responsible for a broad back catalogue of credits, projects, experiments and other. Whistle From Above lands in February 2025 and immediately proves Grubbs' continued genius and refusal to sit still. According to the limited information we have, he began developing these new guitar pieces - best described as somewhere between Fender drone, ambient noise, and musique concrete - following "months of shutdown woodshedding" in which he became "reinvigorated". What resulted was a deep dive into some personal solo arrangements and opportunities to engage with fellow sonic explorers - Rhodri Davies, Andrea Belfi, Nikos Veliotis, Nate Wooley and Cleek Schrey.

It only came on CD and in limited runs but is one that has grown and grown in terms of allure for collectors so now BBE have pressed it up to wax. It blends the best of boss nova and MPB across a suite of all-original songs written by band leader Gil Miranda. They are all hugely melodic and stylish with hints of 60s and 70s Brazilian classics that deliver positive, uplifting and soulful messages in the lyrics. It's a sure-fire winner with both tastemakers and dancers alike.

Review: For the second instalment in their Cuban Classics series, Mr Bongo present this sought-after slice of sublime Afro-Cuban jazz from 1976. It comes courtesy of one of Cuba's most influential acts, Grupo Irakere. Founded in 1973 by Chucho Valdes (son of the Cuban pianist and bandleader Bebo Valdes) the group was home to many of Cuba's finest musicians over the years. With an electrifying style and sound, they mixed traditional Cuban music with jazz, funk, and rock. This self-titled album includes the much-loved, dancefloor heavy-hitter 'Chequere-Son', a Latin-jazz funk masterpiece with Cubanized bebop-flavoured horn lines, lush keys, and 70s hip swagger. Though 'Chequere-Son' is the keystone of the record, the album is laced with brilliance at every turn, from the Carlos Santana-esque channelling 'Iya' with its percussive Latin power, to the sultry, slick and passionate '38 1/2'.

Review: Mr Bongo's launch their new Cuban Classic Series with this reissue of a sought-after, psychedelic funk masterpiece: Yoyi. A fusion of traditional Latin and Afro-Cuban rhythms meets disco, jazz, and funk, with hints of 70s soundtrack productions, this much-loved cult album by Grupo Los Yoyi hears nine predominantly instrumental tracks. Together, they were originally released in 1977 on Areito Records, a sublabel of the state-owned label Egrem, it has become one of the rarest (even in Cuba) yet in-demand albums to be procured by the label. It is the sole album from Grupo Los Yoyi and was composed, orchestrated, and produced by the mysterious, Jorge Soler Leo.

Review: Future Rootz has collaborated with Canal Sounds and EGREM for a gem of a reissue here that goes all the way back to 1977 when producer and bassist Jorge Soler stepped out as Grupo Yoyi for Yoyi, an album that marked his only known solo project. The record now sits up there as one of the rarest and most desirable albums from the Cuban musical canon as it is such a sublime fusion of Afro-Cuban rhythms with jazz, funk and disco. The musicianship throughout is exceptional with mesmeric synths and evocative horn solos all tethered to the sort of grooves that will either chill you out or heat you up depending on the setting.

Review: Brothers Lelo and Ze Eduardo Nazario formed Grupo Um in 1976, creating a visceral, experimental fusion project which remains a critical peak for leftfield music from Brazil. Now Far Out Recordings present the first album the group recorded, half-hidden from history due to the avant-garde nature of the music struggling to find a market in the 70s. It's absolutely daring, from the skittering musicality to the wild time signatures, but with the benefit of hindsight it's also incredibly engaging. Rescuing the master tapes from Lelo Nazario's archives, we're now able to savour this incredible work 50 years after the fact.

Review: In 1968, celebrated American jazz pianist Vince Guaraldi moved away from Fantasy Records to Warner Bros and marked a new chapter with Oh, Good Grief!, his debut album on the label. Revisiting his beloved Peanuts compositions, Guaraldi expanded his signature trio setup of piano, bass and drums by incorporating electric guitar and electric harpsichord. The result was a fresh new take on his iconic themes that again resonated with fans and meant the album became a commercial success. Here remastered by Kevin Gray, this classic LP returns to vinyl and remains a joyful, nostalgic journey through Guaraldi's musical world alongside the lovable Charlie Brown and the Peanuts gang.

Review: It has been five long decades since the Charlie Brown Thanksgiving episode first hit US TV screens. Originally aired in 1973, the show proved beyond any doubt that Peanuts was the coolest and most sophisticated cartoon of the day, and that's in no small part down to the original scores, which were the responsibility of Vince Guaraldi, and all of which are worth picking up if you see copies on sale.

A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving has never been available on record before, having only recently been rediscovered in the vaults and then primed for this autumn 2023 debut. Remixed and remastered to elevate some of the details that had been lost in the old recordings, tracks run between lounge jazz and soul funk, with 'Little Birdie' arguably the pick of the lot (and not just because it stands out with those iconic vocals).

Review: For the first time ever, this classic Charlie Brown soundtrack is now available on vinyl, offering the complete 19-track score plus a special bonus track. This timeless Peanuts special, created by Charles Schulz and directed by Phil Roman, is brought to life with Guaraldi's signature jazz-infused compositions, including beloved pieces like 'Peppermint Patty'. 'Easter Theme' and 'Snoopy and Woodstock'. This vinyl edition has been mixed and mastered from the original 2" session tapes to ensure audiophile quality, providing an enhanced listening experience for fans of jazz and Peanuts. 'Woodstock's Medley', features pianist David Benoit with original Guaraldi sidemen Seward McCain (bass) and Mike Clark (drums), recorded fifty years later at the same Hyde Street studio in San Francisco. Guaraldi's score, with its elegant title theme, playful take on Beethoven and the infectious 'Woodstock's Dream', is something for all listeners. The album's warm analogue sound brings the Easter classic to life in a way that's sure to delight both long-time fans and newcomers.

Review: On A New Day, Italian pianist Giovanni Guidi rekindles his enduring musical rapport with Thomas Morgan and Joao Lobo, while expanding the trio's sonic palette by adding American saxophonist James Brandon Lewis, making his ECM debut. Recorded at Studios La Buissonne in Southern France and produced by Manfred Eicher, the album captures an elevated sense of communication and innovation. Lewis's confident, unmistakable tone introduces new dialects and perspectives, enhancing the group's interplay. The quartet navigates fresh instrumental paths with fluidity, inspired by their deep-rooted partnership and heightened collaboration. The result is a dynamic blend of jazz that explores new textures and ideas, showcasing the quartet's cohesive and adventurous spirit. Guidi's piano, Lewis's saxophone, Morgan's double bass, and Lobo's drums come together to create an album that is both reflective and forward-thinking, making A New Day a compelling new listen for Jazz fans.

Review: On her third full-length release, Brooklyn-based bassoonist, composer and producer Joy Guidry showcases the full range of her 21st century jazz repertoire. While her frequently haunting and emotionally resonant bassoon parts are naturally a focal point throughout, these distinctive and intoxicating musical movements come wrapped in deep-set ambient soundscapes (see sublime opener 'Psalm:138:7'), waves of special effects (the equally meditative 'It's Okay To Let Me Go'), the righteous release of gospel ('Members Don't Get Weary', 'Angels') and the cosmic, higher-level intent of spiritual jazz ('I Will Always Love You'). In other words, it's an impeccable ambient jazz album that deserves wider recognition.

Review: Since it was first released in the collective's native Brazil in 1978, the self-titled debut album from Guilherme Coutinho E O Groupo Stalo has become a sought-after item amongst collectors of Latin jazz. This reissue - the first of any kind - proves why. Offering a mixture of samba-soaked Latin jazz rhythms, sweet vocals, spacey analogue synthesizer sounds, Azymuth style electric piano motifs, MPB style songwriting and Brazilian jazz-funk stylistic tropes, it's a joyously sunny and quirkily off-kilter affair that impresses from start to finish. Production wise it's a little loose and fuzzy round the edges, but that only adds to the album's obvious allure. Recommended!

Review: Brazillian music boffins Mr Bongo have pressed up the 1978 self-titled classic from Guilherme Coutinho E O Grupo Stalo so those who want a piece of this mythical classic no longer have to get a mortgage to do so. It's a stunning mix of lo-fi and laidback tropicalia, jazz, funk and MPB with a signature sun-kissed sound that will melt you into your sun lounger on a lazy afternoon. This one is incredibly hard to find even in Brazil and marked a high water mark for band leader and keyboard player Guilherme Coutinho. He was only 41 when he died in 1983 but his legacy lives on with this album which is distinct from many others of the time with its alluring vocal deliveries and charming arrangements.

Riffing on the vapour trails emitted from past collaborations with the likes of Amy Winehouse, Lizzo, Pharrell, and Sharon Jones - and last but not least, a former membership of The Roots - Guy's solo output is a testament to his fine skill as a blissful soul producer and composer. An homage to his home parish of Queens, New York, this record was recorded in the bottomless sonic quarry that is the Diamond Mine studio. Through anthemic trumpet lines, boxy but punchy hip-hop backings, two-chord guitar lilts and triplet-time detours, Guy weaves a intricate instrumental tapestry replete with double-folded hems and flourishing handwoven cadences, one that would surely make Arachne blush.

Review: A wonderfully warm and heartrending new jazz opus from Joshua Redman - Where We Are adds to Blue Note's legacy as standing for "The Finest In Jazz". Over the past three decades, the saxophonist, composer, and bandleader has consistently demonstrated how to honor the music's verities while expanding its reach in contemporary settings. On where are we, Redman's first recording as a Blue Note artist, he delivers one of his most compelling albums to date, in a program featuring typically brilliant supporting partners and (in a first for Redman) built around a dynamic vocalist, Gabrielle Cavassa. With incisive attention to detail and impeccable recordings, this is not one to let pass by.
