Review: Following on from their widely acclaimed album Afraid To Leave, Berlin's beautiful maudlin post-punk outfit Bleib Modern presents a compilation of remixes and reworks by esteemed artists from across darkwave, post-punk, and EBM. From IV Horsemen's club-worthy rendition of 'Bitter Smile' to M!R!M's dreamy synthpop take on 'Into The Night' via Dune Messiah's crooning 'Loony Voices, 2 Afraid 2 Leave: Remixed Reimaged Reloaded Part 2 offers truly diverse interpretations. With contributions from luminaries like The KVB and Blind Delon, it provides a fresh perspective on Bleib Modern's sound and serves as an exciting interlude that showcases the band's versatility and paves the way for future creations

The Nightingales - "Ten Bob Each Way" (3:23)
Stewart Lee - "Use Your Loaf" (with Nick Pynn) (5:23)
Review: For the first time since their Four Against Fate album, Nightingales have recorded new music. 'Ten Bob Each Way' / 'Use Your Loaf' is a limited 7" single. The A-side is a beguiling bit of lo-fi post-punk energy, and the b-side features Stewart Lee and Nick Pynn serving up a cover that was originally intended for a Nightingales tribute album. This release kick starts what is said to be a lengthy campaign of reissues by Robert Lloyd's band The Nightingales after they've been returned to the spotlight thanks to the Stewart Lee-written film King Rocker. It told the fascinating tale of the unique band over a four decade career and was recently shown on Sky Arts.

There Is Still Time (3:33)
Review: Searows is the moniker of Alec Duckart, a Portland-based indie folk star who is signed to Matt Maltese's label Last Recordings On Earth. Searows is influenced by the likes of Sufjan Stevens, Bon Iver and Iron & Wine and his falsetto has a similar power and timbre to that of his formative influences. Opening track 'Martingale' is beautifully stripped down and pulls you as a listener close to his soul. Meanwhile, on 'To Be Seen' Searows comes across like he's lamenting the death of something and it is a proper tear-jerker. Contrastingly, 'Toothache' is brighter with percussion and delay-laden electric guitar showing his talent for rich, lush arrangements. Matt Maltese has struck gold here by signing Searows. Plus, they're well-suited as they each appear to enjoy delving into post-apocalyptic work. Searows' previous release (on the Last Recordings On Earth label) is called End Of The World and before starting this label, Maltese released his hit single as a solo artist: 'As The World Caves In'. They suit it all so well.

A Second Thought
Review: Brighton based band Shoreline is the brainchild of guitarist Tom Cowan and Italian-born vocalist Beatrice Sanjust, and incorporates the deft musicianship of a whole host of their talented associates. This 10" is their debut release and collects five beautiful tracks of whimsical folk, akin to that of contemporaries Joanna Newsom, Vashti Bunyan or Iron & Wine. They blend gorgeous sparse instrumentation; harps, bouzouki and of course acoustic guitar with Beatrice Sanjust's smooth and sensual vocals and playful lyrical content - the result is more than explosive. Opening track 'Lightning' sets the scene perfectly with two minutes of simple but drastically effective guitar, xylophone and that evocative voice. By the time you reach the ep's highlight 'Kings' you're already won over, the unforgettable harmonies bring to mind the finest moments of British folk music. Shoreline inject enough of their own personality and originality to make this a stunning experience. The band are even at this early stage garnering heaps of praise for their live shows in and around Brighton and Italy, and the word is only just starting to get out. With a spot already booked for this year's influential Green Man festival - 'From Eden, Home & In Between' is only the beginning for Shoreline, great things are destined to come!

Mork N Mindy (feat Billy Nomates) (3:29)
Little Bits (3:25)
Review: Britain's finest working class poets return with a tune named after the 1970s-80s extraterrestrial sitcom starring Robin Williams and Pam Dawber, which frontman Jason Williamson has himself described as "the sound of the central heating and the dying smells of Sunday dinner in a house on an estate in 1982". Fittingly the same year said TV show was cancelled.

It's not hard to hear what he means, providing your mind works that way. A sweeping, hypnotic, mechanical hook, the heavy atmosphere that seems to hang in the air long after the very UK, very deprecating rhymes end. Even Billy Nomates' beautiful, soulful vocals can't save it from drowning in delightful scuzz. Backed with the smoky breaks instrumental 'Little Bits', it bodes well for a new album in January, Spare Ribs, which is apparently based on the idea that elites place no value in the lives of everyday people. How apt.

Sleaford Mods re-rub the Pet Shop Boys classic 'West End Girls' with typically sardonic Midlands wit - you must know by now, this one has been impossible to avoid. What's even better than all that is the profits are going to homeless charity Shelter. Even PSB purists can't complain, either, as the duo have contributed their own extended mix to the five track affair.

Alison (3:47)
So Tired (4:06)
Souvlaki Space Station (6:00)
Mousakka Chaos (6:06)
Review: Slowdive's second album, Souvlaki, defined a time and sound in rock, helping establish shoegaze as a genre and cementing the English outfit as one of the pre-eminent founding members of that movement. Combining the euphoria of electronic chill with the vastness of classical and songcraft of indie pop, it offered a purity of sound at odds with the often very full and complex instrumentals.

Outside Your Room is an EP full of tracks taken from that record, and as such is exactly what we mean. 'So Tired' feels like an opium dream, scuzzy, unkept, and yet blissful and utterly intoxicating in its own way. 'Alison' opens the scoring on a more anthemic note, vocals gently riding the waves of melody beneath. 'Souvlaki Space Station' is all build with absolutely no let off from its sparse but commanding atmospherics, while 'Moussaka Chaos' turns those elements around to rethink the entire arrangement. Exquisite stuff.

Country Rain (3:30)
Review: It has been said that Slowdive's 5 EP is unlike anything else the band had done by this point in their journey - circa 1993 - and unlike anything they would go on to release. A four-tracker that's largely instrumental, it's arguably their closest venture into full-blown electronica, and given it doesn't sound too far from some of the choral-infused ambient on the release schedule today it's safe to say they pulled the idea off.

Of course it's still Slowdive, masters of shoegaze, and so despite clear differences compared with preceding work and all that followed, there are hallmarks of the band everywhere. Opener 'In Mind' provides a great example of the grand yet quiet atmospheres they're best known for, painting fantastical, emotionally enchanting pictures only visible through your third eye.

In Mind (Tom Middleton & Mark Pitchard aka Global Communication Reload remix - The 147 take) (13:55)
Review: Legendary Reading shoegaze band Slowdive had s short but powerful run from 1989 until 1995 (during their first spell) and that included the 5EP. In the same year, it was remixed to perfection by Bandulu and Reload and now it gets reissued on limited hand numbered vinyl. First up, Bandulu stretch the original's heavy minor chords and fatten the track out into a dubby masterclass and then the Reload version from Tom Middleton & Mark Pritchard (better known as Global Communication) is even more impressive. It's a supremely blissed out cut with a slow motion rhythm and futuristic sense of soul cut on 45 rpm but just as suited to 33rpm playback.

Review: It's 1991 and all looks alarming right with the world - little did we know what was coming a few decades later. Nevertheless, the Berlin Wall has already fallen, uniting East and West, and Slowdive have been drumming up some serious support by way of that self-titled EP and sequel, Morningrise. Then they dropped Just For A Day, the debut album, and cemented their place in shoegaze ambient rock 'n' roll history.

Holding Our Breath is both a collector's item reissue, which originally arrived slightly ahead of that first full album, and an exceptional example of how newcomers can be blown away by the euphoria and strange opiate intensity of this band after hearing only a handful of tracks. Comprising 'Catch The Breeze', 'Golden Hair', 'Shine' and 'Albatross', everything soars, glides, ebbs and flows its way through stunning, epic soundscapes that are somehow loud and quiet.

Some Song (2:23)
Review: Recorded in September 1994, but only released the following January, 'Needle In The Hay' is up there with the most iconic acoustic rock tracks of all time. Covered by many - not least in that Kermit the Frog parody video - none have managed to better the original Elliott Smith rendition, which is a broken, tender, heart-on-sleeve stunner.

The other two tracks here are likely less familiar, but also carry the same level of emotional quality. 'Alphabet Town' is the floatiest, rhythms swaying in and out of coherency, at times the tune feels so loose you can get lost in its complexity. 'Some Song', meanwhile, feels like a mirror image of 'Needle...', its alter ego, so similar and yet distinct from the big hitter. A hidden gem waiting to be unearthed.

Review: Soft Estate's debut album is the 5th release on Gothenburg label 'Mammas Mysteriska Jukebox', released alongside the sophomore Thomas Bush record as the first external records for the label. The band are brand new and information is scarce, with 'Time Is Away's Jack Rollo describing them as so: "Soft estate are a band I don't know. Their songs are here and gone, gauzy, blank and romantic. This record is a brief heady waltz through a hall of mirrors. Drum machines tick past, oil and water synths swirl by and a sleepy solemn voice sings. The reflections of 40 years of art-school electronics are pulled and twisted into new shapes". The hazy female vocals against delayed synths in 'Echo' stick out as a particular highlight - the oscillation of audio like the rolling of the tide.

Invito Al Cielo (20:48)
Hungara Vivo (5:45)
Radio-Amatoroj (28:33)
Review: To call Invito Al Cielo an experimental album kind of undersells just how experimental it is. It also suggests, to the uninitiated, that there's an album here in some shape or form. Of course, the definition of an album is open to some debate - does it need to have a certain number of songs on there? Or is it more about overall run time? Here we have two tracks running upwards of 20minutes (one touching on 30) and a bridge movement at a still-pretty-long six minutes, so take from that what you will. What's really important, though, is the contents. Sonic Youth had already established themselves among the loudest in rock 'n' roll, but also the most adventurous and explorative musically speaking. This outing marked the third in a series of releases on their own SYR imprint, a platform used to push the envelope even further. Masters at noise and walls of sound, much of what's here is proof of just how far you can take drone and refrain with subtle differentiations.

Sonic Youth - "Personality Crisis" (3:42)
The Pastels - "Lonely Planet Boy" (4:15)
Review: RECOMMENDED
While New York Dolls are widely considered one of the earliest names on the Big Apple punk scene, revisiting tracks like 'Personality Crisis' proves just how much change took place between 1973 and the later years in the decade. The original version is rooted in a traditional barroom rock 'n' roll aesthetic which, at the time, would definitely not have sounded so traditional.

Breaking from this, dons of wall-of-sound stuff Sonic Youth opted for a lo-fi garage-y interpretation that successfully breathed new life into the song when this interpretation landed in 1993. Flip it to find 'Lonely Planet Boy', which back in the 70s was a piano and guitar workout defined by a somewhat laidback vocal delivery. A wonderful contrast to the A, in 1987 The Pastels offered up a much bigger take on said track that still retained the original's air of cool. Proof, if it were needed, that great music evolves in the right hands.

Minsk collective Soyuz have some seriously strong musical chops and subsequently can bring in guest appearances from the sensational Biel Basile of the rising Brazilian group Sessa and Anthony Ferraro (Toro Y Moi, Astronauts, Etc.). It's a real gem of a release and a likely future collectible 7" from the Brighton-based independent label Mr Bongo.

Review: Sufjan Stevens has never shied away from making us think about life's fragilities, highs, lows and challenges. You could argue this double-A single is as strong a case in point as anything in his back catalogue, with two versions of the same unarguably poignant song combined in one release that's guaranteed to resonate with everyone, and appeal directly to his collector-minded fans.
Both takes were first recorded in 2014 at the artist's Brooklyn studio, with the original rendition appearing on his seminal full lengther, Carrie & Lowell, the following year. At the time, it was one of the standout moments on the LP, but these alternative interpretations never saw the light of day. Finally let loose in summer, and now up for grabs on wax, you can't help but feel the themes dealt with - connection through grief and loss - are more resonant now than ever as we slowly get to grips with the psychological impact of a global pandemic

They started their musical adventure way back in the 6th grade. In the decade since they have managed to record and tour with their own respective groups, as well as work on their own distinctive brand of indie together. Here they tap up Sloshy for a feature on a new 7" that comes via Lewis. 'It's Not Over' is a dreamy cut lush vocal harmonies and lo-fi drums making for a beautifully melancholic sound. Instead, it sees veteran German producer Superpitcher deliver a pair of fireside-warm, loved-up outings that sit closer to Balearic pop than sweaty, warehouse-friendly club smashers. A-side "Little Raver" sees him singing a hazy song about a long-lost dancer over a rich, warm, evocative and decidedly lo-fi pop backing. B-side "Snow Blind" is an altogether sunnier affair, with cascading electronics, dreamy chords and tumbling melody lines wrapping themselves around a chugging, head-nodding dancefloor groove.

What counts is it sounds exceptionally good, and rather unique, which is saying something for our era, albeit typical for the band in question.

From the white noise textures of 'Look' to the punk rage and menacing voice over of 'Trouble Every Day' it's a wise idea to buckle up from the get go. Whether it's the strange post punk-cum-acid disco of 'Pray', 'Breathe''s gypsy punk stylings or the frozen, twisted harmonies of 'Death', there's more happening in six tracks here than you could normally reasonably expect from ten.

Be There (Halllo Halo remix) (5:31)
Be There (Ghost Immanuel dub) (6:41)
Review: House Music With Love turn once again to Swedish duo Swim for a record soaked in a particularly soothing bath of Balearic goodness. Original track "Be There" is certainly laced with an air of Scandinavian cool, not least thanks to Erika Rosen's dreamy vocals, but there's a solid boogie undercarriage carrying the music along. Halllo Halo step up with a remix that makes a playful, intricate broken beat refrain out of the backing track while maintaining the vocals. Ghost Immanuel meanwhile whips up a spacious dub that stays close to the original, albeit in instrumental form.

Review: Switches continue their ascent with this stomper of a single, "Lay Down The Law", released on Atlantic. The band have spent the last three months building their collective armoury and sharpening their shows, with gigs here, there and everywhere. They now exit the starting blocks faster than a steroid influenced sprinter with this, a brand new Rob Schnapf (Beck, Elliott Smith) produced version of the demo track that was originally released on 7" last year. Switches have been picking up plaudits from both critics and fans alike with an irreverent and brilliant musical mix of flippancy and skills.

You & I (2:21)
Review: The world is full of heart-rendering electronic pop. So much so, you sometimes have to ask yourself if we can handle - or indeed actually need - any more. Rendered almost-immune to the emotionally barrage that seems to haunt our airwaves, playlists, and Made In Chelsea episodes, anyone who still has feelings in 2023 is doing well by all accounts.
Then along come Synthia, billed by the Big Crown label as a 'supergroup', comprising production don Leon 'El Michels Affair' Michels, and vocalist Claire Cottrill, AKA Clairo. Debate over what constitutes a 'group' aside, So Low, a startling double-A is enough to make you forget everything we just talked about, throw away the idea of overkill, and dive right in. As if born to score something cool, reflective, thought-proving and devastatingly romantic, fans of Electric Youth, Cocteau Twins and Almagris should be here already.

Review: The Invisible Girls is the name of legendary new wave production duo Martin Hannett (famous for his work as producer for Joy Division, New Order and Buzzcocks) and Steve Hopkins's band, and also this new collection of rare and unreleased recordings made throughout their career. Many of them have reportedly never been heard before. In fact the first five tracks on the album are a selection of previously unreleased 'Moods' recorded at the famous Strawberry Studios between 1980 and 1987. Elsewhere there are rare solo tracks by Hannett plus fine collabs with Section 25, Pauline Murray, Nico and Crispy Ambulance.

Review: Psychedelectronica done best. Animal Collective mega-mammal Panda Bear (Noah Lennox) teams up with E.A.R.'s lead brain and former Spaceman 3 lynchpin Sonic Boom (Pete Kember) for this weirdo's favourite collaborative album, melding influences from nostalgic Americana, warbly tape culture calamity, and even bolero into its tapestry. It truly 'Resets' the mind from preconceived notions we might have; 'Danger', for example, is a decidedly calm and tropical tune for proclaiming so loudly, 'I'm in danger'. Replete with good tunes, 'Reset' is an eccentric's goldmine.

Review: The iconic first album from Watford coldwave-tinted post-punk outfit, 'Sad Lovers & Giants', still sounds as fresh and relevant to today's sonic spectrum as it did upon its release literally four decades ago. With frosted synth lines, echoing vocals, and dissonant, jangling riffs for days, 'Epic Garden Music', almost predates the goth-rock influence that would become an intrinsic aspect of the scene forevermore. John Peel sessions and an inclusion into the 1001 Songs You Must Hear Before You Die manifesto, are just a few of the waves this immense debut full-length has made since first being unleashed on the listening public forty years ago. Relistening now, it's almost bizarre how many of today's post-punk acts worth their salt, are indebted to this work, whether they're aware of it or not.

Review: No, not that Sade is the first thing to note or you will very much be in for a shock. This Sade is a gloomy metal band made up of Andrew Pozzy on vocals, guitars, piano, synth, Silvia on bass, backing vocals and Matt Sade on drums and pads with Maurizio Baggio also going for some additional guitar and synth work. This album has been informed by the pandemic and brings all new darkness to the band's sound. Dark-wave and goth moods pervade the tracks which all lay out a pessimistic and nihilistic view of the human condition.

Review: Eight years is a long time to leave it between albums. In 2016, Strereolab's Laetitia Sadier gifted us the stunning 'Find Me Finding You', and we've been waiting for the follow up ever since. A veteran of the industry, whose career now spans three decades, she was never going to offer up anything but the good on this much-anticipated return, and Rooting For Love is more than worth the waiting time. First up, the orchestration and arrangements here are gorgeous, nodding to strange pop, operatic soft rock, curious funk and other, more difficult to define machinations. Then there's the themes and lyrics, which touch on everyone and everything from the collapse of our institutions to personal wounds of the past, healing and growth. The overall message: seek inner enlightenment to safeguard the world from what may lie ahead.

Review: RECOMMENDED
With an interlude, 'Psalm I', dedicated to the subject of social media fakery - specifically the false lives we project as account holders desperately trying not to look "ordinary" (a word then repeated and looped for impact and posterity), Saint Agnes make no secret of the fact they don't just want to make a lot of noise, they also have a lot to say.

Some have labelled Vampire a "ferocious social commentary" and that's definitely a fitting description. The London metal troupe, who marry gut-wrenching guitars and screams with dark art pop and electronic influences primarily from the IDM end of the synth world, the record is an intense and often terrifying experience wholly in keeping with these intense and often terrifying times. Definitely an essential listen, just don't forget to prepare yourself properly before opening this particular trapdoor.

Review: Legendary British outfit Saint Etienne returned with their 12th studio album late last year, and now it lands on vinyl via Heavenly Recordings. A much-awaited follow-up to 2021's I've Been Trying To Tell You, this ambient collection offers a gentle, immersive experience designed to ease the noise of daily life. It was produced with Augustin Bousfield and blends songs, spoken word and rain-soaked textures into a seamless dreamscape, all recorded between Saltaire in the north and Hove down on the south coast. It captures the fragile space between waking and sleep with highlights like 'Half Light' and 'Preflyte'. As such, The Night is best experienced on headphones and is ideal for late hours, reflection and introspection.

Review: Saint Etienne's landmark 10th studio album comes 30 years after the outfit put out their notable debut, Foxbase Alpha. The much loved London crew have since become cult favourites in the downtempo and chilled out electronic realm. This new record much to the delight of fans, has been made largely from samples and sounds drawn from their halcyon period between 1997 and 2001. A such the whole record was made remotely, rather than together in a studio, and in collaboration with film and TV composer Gus Bousfield. The sounds are optimistic and nostalgic at the same time and come on all formats including this limited edition clear wax.

Review: The theme is in the title here, with the British pop legends - always unusually skilled at bringing a sense of place to their music as well as chronicling the strange specifics of British culture - using the geographical region as a springboard to a collection of bittersweet electronic-powered ditties whose melodic sweetness and melancholic aspect remain indelible regardless of context and concept, just as Sarah Cracknell's voice has never sounded so beguiling and evocative. Not merely the only one record this year to include Radio 4 announcements amongst its tracks, 'Home Counties' is a record with both head screwed on and heart-on-sleeve.

Review: Saint Etienne's cult classic Good Humor marks its quarter-of-a-century anniversary with this special splatter vinyl reissue edition. It comes with the original artwork and inner sleeve that was used back in 1998 when it first dropped and it has aged fantastically well. The title is an intentional US spelling to kick back against the 'quintessentially English' tag the band often got given. It also found them leaving behind indie dance and serving up some extra acoustic and orchestral elements with plenty of synth-pop hooks and dance grooves.
