Review: So many of the compilations that BBE put out are vital history lessons as well as great listening experiences. This one is another case in point as it finds music historian, DJ and daytime party promoter John Armstrong - who has put together more than 200 compilations - digging deep to offer up an alternate take on the famous bubblegum sounds that came out of Black South Africa towards the end of the apartheid years. Yebo! Rare Mzansi Party Beats from Apartheid's Dying Years is a superb showcase of diverse sounds created by the youth of the day as a means of escape. There is already talk of a second volume, which we're very much ready for after hearing this one.

Review: Few can match BBE when it comes to the funk and disco compilation stakes - the label's been issuing killer compendiums curated by some of the finest and most eminently knowledgeable DJs and diggers since the mid 90s. Soul In The Hole sees them hand the controls to Sadar Bahar, Chicago based DJ described by BBE as the city's "best kept secret". Bahar began DJing in the early 80s, a historically important time for music in Chicago and states he was driven by an "unquenchable desire to create one of the best collections ever". Review: It would be fair to say that Bristolian selector Andy Smith has extremely deep crates. It's for this reason that he's been responsible for tons of killer compilations over the years. This one, the second in his disco, boogie and proto-house focused "Reach Up" series, is another gem. It cheerily moves between disco old and new, mixing tried-and-tested classic cuts from the likes of the New Jersey Connection, Ted Taylor, Chain Reaction and The Gibson Brothers with more recent retro-futurist cuts (see his subtly house-friendly re-edit of Will Session and Amp Fiddler's superb "Lost Without You" and Full Intention and Nick Reach Up's modern electrofunk treat "Night of My Life"). While confirmed disco enthusiasts may own some of the tracks already, there's enough lesser known goodness to make the compilation an essential purchase.

Review: BBE release this 14-track double LP containing some of Perception and Today Records' best tracks from the 60s and 70s. There are highlights aplenty: The Eight Minutes' "I Can't Get No Higher" opens proceedings with a soulful, mournful and infectious blend of Motown aesthetics, with the rough, raw production value and loose funk capturing exactly what Perception was all about. Elsewhere, The Fatback Band's "Njia (Njia) Walk" is characterised by a driving beat and climbing bass line, creating the illusion of disco trapped inside the mind of funk. Madhouse's "Get Some Of This" features some fantastic drum work, going at once from a sparse break to a rattling, break-neck cacophony of percussion. In a word, essential.

Review: Perception Records specialised in releasing music from Manhattan's black music scene in the 60s and 70s, and BBE have shrewdly chosen to re-release some of the highlights from that era. On Part 2 of the vinyl series, Black Ivory's "Surrender" is a highlight, with crashing percussion and a bass line that immediately captures your attention. Bartel's "Boogie" meanwhile opens with spectacular horn work, running rings around the rhythm, the drums subtly driving the beat along while impressive jazzy guitars flick away. Elsewhere, JJ Barnes' "Wishful Thinking" is a track that skirts the line between funk and Motown with aplomb - the trio of female harmonies stand behind the lead singer, a choir of soul adding gentle textures to a slow love song. Highly recommended.

Review: Spinna's double-decade document on BBE is an essential lesson in the dark art of remix craft. And here are five perfect examples. His take on "The Power" by Karizma subverts from the off as we're washed with a waterfall of bitter sweet acid. The remix of Bah Samba's "Moonlight" shows Spinna at his most cosmic and reflective while "Got To Let It Go" is straight up jazz church music. Deeper again we find him in straight up bassline soul mode on the Wonder-esque "I Remember Love" while his take on "You Can't Lie", a hookup between Kerri Chandler and Harley & Muscle, is more street soul than it is house music. Truly timeless.

As you'd expect, this is choc-a-bloc with odd, hard-to-find B-sides from the late 70's through to the early 80's, and his own edits are the perfect thing for the DJ who own the originals, but who wishes them to be that lil' bit straighter and kick driven. The opener itself, an edit of Clear's larger-than-life "Equal Love Opportunity" is a bit special...what a tune, and look out for the rest; all killers here. Tip for the disco heads, for real!

Review: In recent years we've become accustomed to disco compilations appearing at a furious rate. While many of these compilations are undoubtedly worthy of attention, the volume of releases can sometimes be bewildering. This eight track selection from Al Kent, the second in his Disco Love series, ticks all the right boxes, however. Even by the highest crate digging standards, these tracks are pretty obscure; many won't have had much of an airing since their original release. Those into the rich, soulful side of disco - that brand of string-laden dancefloor material most associated with the Philadelphia International label and studio -will find much to enjoy. Review: As someone who briefly escaped 70's Glasgow and got a taste of the golden age of NYC Disco, Al Kent is a perfect choice to lead you through a classy selection of some choice and rare Disco treats. Having used his huge collection in the past for re-edits and originals, he also took the bold step of forming his own band in 2007 under the name The Million Dollar Orchestra.
The selections here reflect the point at which Funk and Soul mutated into Disco, with most of the tracks capturing that pre-Moroder organic sound. Lee Alfred's Rockin-Poppin Full Tilting for example has a laid back vibe similar to Curtis Mayfield's more uptempo tunes. New Ghetto Express's version of Standing On The Verge of Getting It On (originally by Funkadelic) up's the tempo on the wigged-out classic, again combing the Funk with a Disco groove.
Lypso Disco by Smile Street People, as you'd guess from the title, has a playful Calypso lilt and bounce to it. Review: Since the early 2000s, the NY duo Kon & Amir have been among the best disco editors around, and should now surely be seen as being amongst the very best of the East Coast disco scene. This is their 2007 compilation, Off The Track Volume One: The Bronx, a near twenty magnificent disco blazers that have been stripped down and anted-up by the duo for the purpose of today's dance floor. What's impressive, though, is how Kon & Amir manage to allow the original tunes to speak for themselves and, if anything, their editing allows the originals to sound even louder and prouder than ever before. The duo are known for adding touches of latin percussion to their extensions and Part-A of a two part retrospect sees Morales unveil some previously unreleased M&M material. The legendary melted chocolate vocals of "Never, Never Gonna Give Ya Up" by Barry White get a simple and irresistible "Keep On Doin' It" touch up, while M&M save only the best vocals by pop and jazz singer Jean Carne in their "South Philly Groove" mix to "Was That What Is". Predictably, this belated third installment is full of killer selections that lives up to it's subtitled billing as More Rock Funk Soul Jazz & Soundtrack Breaks For Modern Living. Favourites come thick and fast though the low down funk of Dynamic Concept's "La Da Da" and the jazz-funk goodness of Harry Beckett's "Ring Within Rings" stand out upon first listen. Almost two decades on, we're told that disco was the sound of summer 2017 (and the summer before that). Review: For anyone not particularly au fait with how important Gilles Peterson's long running Worldwide show has been to breaking new music, this exhaustive double LP retrospective is all the evidence you require. The emphasis on track selection has been to choose the artists which Peterson has debuted on his weekly broadcast, which is syndicated across the globe. Thus there are some classic tracks such as Amerie's "One Thing" and "Galang" from MIA which were premiered long before the artists became international sensations (or should that be sensationalists in the case of M.I.A?). Alongside these and the likes of Winehouse and Dizzee, there are tracks from artists such as Benga, Quasimoto, Recloose and Theo Parrish - all big names within their respective realms and no doubt helped by exposure on Worldwide. This release is made all the more special by the conclusive sleeve notes compiled by Peterson and those who have worked alongside him over the years and some brilliant photography that charts his rise in the game.

Review: In recent times, crate-digging hero Andy Smith has turned his attention to the world of disco and boogie, showcasing the depth of his collection as part of the Reach Up collective. It seems fitting, then, that his latest compilation - a triple-vinyl epic - should explore the disco and electrofunk gems lurking in his vast vault of records. There are a few well-known gems (Disco Dub Band, World Premiere, Freedom and Sure Thing's modern electrofunk anthem "Holding Me Tight", for starters), but far more overlooked or slept-on gems (Advance's boogie killer "Take Me To The Top" and Jimmy Bo Horne's "Is It In" being great examples). The collection also boasts a couple of tasty re-edits, including an unheard one by Smith and pal Nick Halkes of Jimmy Ross's Paradise Garage anthem "First True Love Affair".

Back in the late 90s and early 2000s, Rainer Trueby compiled (or helped to compile) a string of Brazilian-focused compilations for his friends at Compost Records. It's perhaps surprising, then, that it's taken this long for him to get a chance to showcase some gems from his record collection. "Soulgliding" is as smooth, warm and glassy-eyed as you'd expect, with the German DJ/producer serving up a range of mostly obscure jazz-funk, soul-jazz, boogie and slow jam gems. Highlights are plentiful throughout, from the sparse-but-rich synth-soul of Patrice Rushen's "To Each His Own" and the sun-kissed shuffle of Bridge's "Next To Me", to the saccharine sweetness of Crystal Winds' "Lovers Holiday" and the low-slung jazz-funk bounce of "Memories Of Moments" by Demo Cates.

Review: Prepare yourself for a wry chuckle, as we impart the fact that the compilation you see hyperlinked before you was not at all prepackaged, with work cut out for its curators. Rather, it came from the source, having first manifested as a pile of Ghanaian highlife LPs buried at the bottom of DJ Jerry Frempong's wife's garden. Frempong is the son of one of one of the most prominent former Ghanaian-British label owners, Anthony Roberts Frempong of Asona Records, whose founding movements in the South East London district of Peckham proved highly popular helping disseminate highlife music in the English capital. BBE Music owner Pete Adarkwah caught wind of the serendipitous discovery and approached Jerry to discuss the reissue of this historic catalogue, which you hear here. The sweetest of early and untrodden highlife highlights are heard here, including sparklers by Kantata, Jewel Ackah, Sam Yeboah, Mr Cee and even Thomas Frempong himself.

Modern Love is a collection of specifically commissioned music that includes versions and covers of rarities and classics in tribute to the late great David Bowie. The aim here is to "champion Bowie's lesser-known connection to soul, R&B, jazz, funk, and gospel." Contemporary artists like Jeff Parker, Helado Negro and Khruangbin all add their own sonic identities to the inspiring originals and the collection as a whole ends up straddling everything from jazz to folk, Thai-funk to neo-soul. The force of Bowie lives on in this one.

Review: Since first emerging a few years ago, Jamie 3:26 has carved a career out of offering up seriously sweaty scalpel jobs. Here he continues that trend with a new batch of edits of classic Chicago cuts. He begins by brilliantly chopping up BSTC's samba-fired disco-era heater "Venus & Mars", before adding his Midas touch to the squelchy Afro-Cosmic throb of Mighty Science's "The Lesson". His sparse but percussive tweak of Jungle Wonz's "Jungle" and drum machine-heavy revision of Quest's "Mind Games" are both essential, as is his stomping, high-octane, Ron Hardy style take on Braxton Holmes' "Stomps N Shouts". The revision of Chip-E's early house gem "It's House" is suitably sweaty, while the edit of Calendar's disco slammer "Comin' On Strong" is arguably the best of the lot.

Review: After the release of the first volume of music selected by Klinkhamer Record shop owner Michel Veenstra in 2022, the anticipation and expectation amongst the heads for a follow up compilation has been building. Now BBE Music can announce that Klinkhamer Volume 2's collection of music from the 70's and 80's is ready to add to the series. An eclectic selection of tracks which crosses genres and styles, Michel has once again curated a compilation album of music that will appeal to the heads, the collectors and the lovers of the groove. A melange of folk, Jazz and funk for the headphones and the dancefloor, Klinkhamer juxtaposes instrumentals with vocal tracks in English, Swedish and French over a double vinyl release and a track order that creates as much a journey as a flow. Michel, alongside his brother Stephen, is the owner of the Klinkhamer Record shop in Groningen and a regular trader at the globally known Utrecht Record Fair since the 1990s. It is this wealth of experience, a nose for a gem and an ear for a tune that that has fed into a compilation that has music lover stamped throughout its eight tracks, all remastered from original vinyl. Coming as a double vinyl and digital release, Klinkhamer Volume 2 is a Godfather II level of follow-up to the previous compilation in the series and really is a must for all true music collectors, vinyl junkies and lovers of tunes curated for the mind, the heart and the feet.
