Review: Concurrent with their new collaboration Candylion, Darla now also reissue the last Harold Budd and Clive Wright album, A Song For Lost Blossoms, described by the label as a suite of ambient melody and "transcendental mood portals". Cobbled together from from intimate home sessions, as well as performances at Redcat in LA, and Clive Wright's Desert Sky Studio in Joshua Tree, these works span 2004 to 2006, and represent the finest moments in their collaboration, with Anna LaCazio lending her voice to the title track, reciting her original poem of the same name as the album's title. Budd, often hailed "The Godfather of Ambient Music," has shaped and shaken the genre's foundations, while Wright, a founding member of US pop rock band Cock Robin, brings a deep textural sensibility honed through work with artists like Tears for Fears and Peter Gabriel. The Southern California desert's vast stillness and surreal magnanimity resonate throughout, arresting the sound in an asperous expanse.

Review: Jefre Cantu-Ledesma's latest album Gift Songs has an omnipresent sound: a homunculus with both instrumentalist's and naturalist's ears, it works field recordings against phonic mudra, consummating Cantu-Ledesma's spiritual and musical practices, which have grown together in recent years. Recorded against the backdrop of the Hudson Valley, the record comes source-trickled by the now-streamable 'The Milky Sea', an oceanic, lactose ambient number which honours the luminous optic phenomenon known as the milky seas effect. Refractive, fading piano flurries underscore a 20-minute jazz-ambient sound-surf, as seafoam collects around our sand-caked earlobes.

If you're unfamiliar with the franchise, let's just say it (re)wrote the book on survival horror, and a big part of this was in the scores used to accompany the on-screen tension. Less focused on specific theme tunes and tracks, over time the emphasis has increasingly fallen on building atmosphere and setting up jump scares for unassuming players. On a record, that sounds like a combination of fast moving and quickly developing instrumental movements and intimidating sound effects. Perhaps not the dinner party soundtrack you were looking for, nevertheless it makes a big impact.

Review: Robin Carolan's latest score for Robert Eggers' Nosferatu is a darkly atmospheric work that fuses gothic elements with a broad range of instruments and sounds. Following their successful collaboration on The Northman, Carolan once again teams up with Eggers to craft a haunting, meticulously composed score that complements the eerie 19th-century setting. British musician Daniel Pioro leads the orchestration, which features 60 string players, a full choir, horns, woodwinds, a harpist and two percussionists. Despite this grandeur, one of the trickiest pieces to perfect was the opening music box which really shows Carolan and Eggers' meticulous attention to detail. Carolan sought to avoid modern influences in the score while embracing contemporary instruments, a balance enhanced by Letty Stott's use of ancient horns and pipes. Carolan's inspirations were diverse, from Bartok and Coil to films like The Innocents and Eyes Wide Shut. He also drew from the Ukrainian film The Eve of Ivan Kupalo to shape the otherworldly tone of the score. Rather than focusing on horror cliches, Carolan emphasised the melancholic and tragic aspects of the story, adding a layer of warped romanticism. The result is an evocative soundtrack that, while perfectly aligned with the film, also stands as a powerful work of art on its own.

The project ambitiously merges the robust sounds of a big band with the rich tones of a string section, drawing inspiration from Wayne Shorter's Emanon, which profoundly impacted Casimir during the album's creation. Building on the success of his previous album, Boxed In, which featured a jazz quintet and a mini chamber orchestra, Balance is Casimir's most ambitious work yet. It features 26 musicians, including prominent figures from the UK jazz scene like Cassie Kinoshi, Nubya Garcia, Rosie Turton, and Binker, alongside the London Contemporary Orchestra's stunning string section. Recorded at Livingston Studios in November 2022, the album's intricate production process began with the foundational trio of piano, bass, and drums, followed by brass, woodwinds, and strings. Vocalists Zola Marcelle and Ria Moran lend their powerful voices to the final recording day, adding the finishing touches to this masterpiece. Notable tracks include 'Music Not Numbers,' a rallying cry for musicians to stay true to their creativity despite streaming culture, and 'Search for Goldilocks,' which delves into the quest for life's perfect balance. Balance is a bold, innovative journey that elevates Casimir's musical vision to new heights.
