Studio headphones
No good studio is complete without at least one good set of headphones. For recording, production, mixing and mastering, there are all sorts of reasons why you might want to use headphones, whether it’s monitoring while using a microphone, getting a different reference sound or simply keeping the noise down late at night.
There are two main types of studio headphones: open-backed designs and closed-back. Open-backed headphones sound a bit more natural, but sound does spill out of them thanks to the open design. Closed-back designs are slightly less accurate, but offer much better isolation.
Studio headphones need to sound good, but they also need to feel comfortable for long sessions. Personal taste varies when it comes to what’s best, but look for headphones with lots of adjustability, light weight and soft cushioning. Brands such as Beyerdynamic, Audio-Technica, Sennheiser and AKG offer something for everyone.
