Selador Decade Vol 1
3D & Robert Owens - "Known Love" (7:51)
Olivier Giacomotto & Quivver - "Snailblazer" (6:40)
Dave Seaman & Hernan Cattaneo - "Napkin Knowledge" (7:28)
Argia & Jepe - "Salitre" (7:38)
Review: In celebration of their tenth birthday, Selador marks the occasion in style with a four-track collaborative EP, featuring tracks from 3D, Robert Owens, Olivier Giacomotto, Quivver, Dave Seaman, Hernan Cattaneo, Argia, and Jepe. The opening track, 'Known Love', is a deep, pulasting house tune that feels like an instant classic, perhaps thanks to the soulful, pop-tinged vocals - think LCD soundsystem meets Four Tet. 'Snailblazer', the second track on the EP, takes a much darker turn, with a chugging, EBM-esque feel. Full-bodied and complete with obscured vocals, this is the kind of track to pull out your bag when it's time to really get stuck in. On the B-side, 'Napkin Knowledge' draws on the glistening synths of eurodance, yet still securing the melodies to a grounded bassline and rhythm section. 'Salitre' is the perfect closing track, rising up in a gleaming, ecstatic melody, before delicately returning to ground level. A varied yet firmly cohesive collaborative release - the perfect way for Selador to kick off their 2023 catalogue.

Worship (extended mix)
Worship (Lance De Sardi remix)
Review: Following on from their 'Seraphim / Firebird' single which picked up heavy hitting support from the likes of Seth Troxler, Skream and Steve Bug the multi-talented duo deliver a sublime offering in 'Worship', along with a deeper remix from Lance De Sardi. The impressive and unique artwork accompanying the release is based on a woodcut by What's great grandfather Conrad Felixmuller.
'Worship' pulsates into life through dusty percussion and shimmering atmospherics; Qzen's spoken word vox gracefully dominates proceedings for the most part (the words of which are taken from a poem by British poet Patience Agbabi) while mechanic modulations and a cosmic sh101 hook combine to dish up a warm off-kilter techno cut with an subtle yet infectious groove.
Lance DeSardi has built up quite the back catalogue over the last decade on labels such as Black Catalogue & Planet E along with his own imprint Legwork, as a close friend of Dan and James he steps up to remix 'Worship'. His re-imagining picks up the pace somewhat by resonating a snippet of Qzen's vocal uttering "straight to my heart" over shifting percussion, soft pads and whirring atmospherics which lend themselves perfectly to her silky voice in this excellent final offering.

Queer On Acid & Hard Ton - "Insane" (Squatter mix) (6:31)
Review: Acid Avengers mark their 30th release with a celebration of the electro duo. Here they invite three to-die-for dyads - Posthuman, Queer On Acid and Hard Ton - for a five-track set of crunching electro, techno and acid house, all gathered together under the visual banner of a smiley-faced retake of the twins from Kubrick's The Shining. Erring on the more explosive and least restrained, most guttural effusions ejectable from the acid faucet, all three artists' contributions convey a hedonistic set and setting, with kitsch 'acid' robot voices and globular low-end movements coalescing across each mix like huge droplets of lysergic sweat.

Apocalypse (7:23)
Beyond Reality (5:16)
Facing Worlds (6:27)
Review: The Black Venison label are back with their release and this is the follow up to Die Roh's scorching Lancia Delta EP from earlier this year. We don't know anything about the currently anonymous Q3A project but we can sure hear that they know how to make some badass house-techno hybrids, and "Apocalypse" is just about as raw as you can get for a deep house cut. Over on side B, "Beyond Reality" takes some stepping, tape-kissed beats and pounds its way through a Chicago kinda vibe, whereas "Facing Worlds" is all about the percussion: dusty, swinging flurries of drum machines goodness to get you out of that chair and onto the floor.

Dedication
Review: Mark E's Merc label resurfaces with a new name at the helm in the shape of Quaid, who may be based in an East London studio or indeed some fantasy fire laden digital realm known as Metropolis. What we have here are two prime slabs of neo futuristic machine funk - apparently influenced by years of treating ears to the sounds of Prince and The Egyptian Lover. Lead track "Watchbeat" chirps into action, the thick stumbling bass drum coaxing out the uneasy textural intricacies that drive the track ever forward in full flight. Throughout you get the sense the production is teetering on the brink due to the sheer weight of its various elements, but onwards it moves. "Dedication" streams forth brilliantly with recycled soul and could easily be mistaken for a Sound Signature release, the various vocal harmonics weaved deep into the rhythmic template and what's so impressive is how the track seems to constantly fizz in different directions, never attempting to settle into one groove. Excellent release!

Easing Of Tension
Review: The second invitation this week from Millions of Moments to traverse the outer echelons of expertly crafted dubbed house and it's another debut release on the imprint; this time courtesy of Quantec. Anyone who has indulged in the producer's output for a multiplicity of imprints including Styrax and Echochord - or indeed his sumptuous refix of Aaron Carl for the MoM imprint - will have an inkling of what to expect and naturally Schienhammer doesn't disappoint. Frosted Basic Channel rhythms run throughout the opener "Sub-System", gently easing through the aural mist atop crisp metallic drums, a sensation that pours into the accompanying languid charms of "Substratum" - all dreamy panned soundscapes laying down the mood before a gentle rhythmic staccato urgency arrives. "Easing Of Tension" is perhaps the most luxuriant offering here, stretching a thick sonic soup all the way across the B Side and willing you to fully engage your senses.

Review: Quazar, pioneers of the early 90s house and techno scene, debuted in 1990 with the iconic 12" 'The Seven Stars/Day-glo.' This underground hit lit up dancefloors globally, from the UK to Goa, and remains a rave classic. Known for its powerful crescendos and intense energy, 'The Seven Stars' and the acid-tinged 'Moon Turns The Tide' balanced perfectly with the melodic 'Day-glo,' a favourite of Ricardo Villalobos. In celebration of Amsterdam Dance Event 2024, and ahead of their debut album being reissued, the EP is re-released with remastered tracks and a new 2024 remake from Olav Basoksi.

Nick Dunton & Richard Polson - "Inceptive"
Review: New York label Ibadan has seen a hefty stream of producers including Joe Clausell, Kerri Chandler and Dennis Ferrer pass through its doors over its impressive 30 year life. For the first time they now welcome Quell, Nick Dunton and Richard Polson into the fold with the Alsos EP. Quell's "Alsos" uses its chanted lyrics and a stomping bassline to support soaring synths on the top for atmosphere. Dunton & Polson take the flipside and Juno's choice of the EP with "Inceptive"; ricocheting key stabs and a frosty metallic bed push ever forward into a hypnotic and captivating track.

Somewhere
Quince - "Europa" (6:28)
Stefan Vincent - "How It Could've Been" (6:49)
Kiani & His Legion - "St The Violet Hour" (5:46)
Poly Nation - "Anther" (6:44)
Review: Utrecht imprint Something Happening Somewhere serves up four tracks of tough and reliable peak time techno cuts. First up "Quince" by Europa is a straight up, no nonsense DJ tool with all the right elements. Next up fellow Dutchman Stefan Vincent provides us with "How It Could Have Been" an ethereal and soulful journey track with its mesmerising melody leading the way. On the flip we have Kiani & His Legion with "St The Nation Hour" a more stripped and restrained cut with its tough beat and rising pad sound giving all it needs, but not before its snarling melody comes marching in. Lastly is Poly Nation with "Anther" that provides a total curveball, featuring impressive live acoustic drumming accompanied by an epic melody and swirling uplifting pads. It's something that you could imagine Laurent Garnier playing at peak time. Promising stuff!

Review: Vakant returns with a new chapter of scuzzy techno from Alex Smoke under his new Quixote guise. Alex Smoke has had a phenomenal year so far with the release of his "Paradolia" album on Soma. For his Vakant productions he has opted to record under the Quixote pseudonym as his output for the two labels has naturally developed in different directions. For Vakant he has always explored the darker aspects of his sound and the Quixote productions will represent this.

Review: Waage is a firm favourite amongst dub techno fans. The Icelandic producer has long been turning out icy and atmospheric rollers for the heads and here he works alongside a fresh name, Quantal, who is sure to go on to big things. Here they land on Thule Records, a legendary label in its own right with roots going back to 1995. They kick off with the textured dub of 'WQ1' which has glitchy sounds paying over the rolling drums. 'WQ2' is much more smooth and streamlined, with an underwater current that sweeps you off your feet, then 'WQ3' leans into the wind with hypnotic techno drums and vamping chords that melt the mind. Last of all comes 'WQ4', a timeless dub with infinite horizons and the most frictionless drum loops.

Review: If Google is to be believed, Quantec is either a company specializing in high end sound design and engineering, or an electrical communication system for use in old people's homes. It's also a well-used alias of Echochord regular Sven Schienhammer, who here pops up on Eluc with his latest excursion into dubwise downtempo territory. Like previous releases, 1000 Vacuum Tubes mines the fertile ground between dub techno, downtempo and vintage ambient house, delivering hypnotic compositions dripping with curious vocal samples, locked-in rhythms and deep-but-sprightly melodies. It's a charming and alluring mixture that perfectly suits the album format, ensuring that 1000 Vacuum Tubes is an excellent listen.

Review: "En Vi Sion" is top notch soulful techno from Quince, a young Dutch talent, praised by Laurent Garnier, Josh Wink, Rolando, Dave Clarke, and others. Ranging from spaced out heavy weighted energetic house tracks to deep, warm, funky club tracks and more emotional, melodic techno, it's all in here. This album "En Vi Sion" is a smooth, exiting journey into the new strands of deep techno and should fit comfortably in between the albums of Aril Brikha, Carl Craig, Steve Rachmad and other electronic music heroes.
