With juleps flowing and kneecaps knocking, Abramo & Nestor bring newfangled electric pianistic swing with 'Dig It!', while a twinned "hit it!" injunction is heard from Floyd James & The GTs on the reissued 'Work That Thang'; James' voice is tubed and speed-delayed to terrific effect, achieving a sprung intonation. Curtis Baker brassifies the bonanza with the lively 'Fried Fish 'n' Collard Greens', while The Native Yinzer's exiting excitation 'The Hip Strip' quilts our ears with a mnemic, down-feathery Hammond-breaks bit.

Review: Terry Callier's rediscovery in the early 90s was a turning point for Acid Jazz and few records symbolise that era quite like 'I Don't Want To See Myself (Without You)'. Originally released as a one-off on the indie label Erect, the track was Callier's final release before stepping away from music, leaving behind a career that had spanned Prestige, Cadet, and Elektra. By the time Acid Jazz reissued it in 1990, the original pressing had become a grail for collectors, with prices soaring. The song itself is a masterclass in understated soul, Callier's plaintive vocal weaving through rich instrumentation with the kind of deep emotional resonance that only he could deliver. Over the next decade, his legend grewihe returned to recording, toured the UK, and finally received the recognition he deserved. In 2006, Acid Jazz gave the record another limited pressing, featuring a fresh edit from Andy Lewis. Now, with the blessing of Callier's estate, the single is back once more, backed with 'If I Could Make You'. A vital piece of modern soul history, fully restored.

Review: Nicola Conte's 'Do You Feel Like I Feel' and 'Ghana' were initially part of his 2011 album, 'Love & Revolution,' a project that showcased a vibrant mix of Italian and international jazz talent. Produced during sessions at Tommy Cavalieri's studios, this album never saw a vinyl releaseiuntil now. Schema Records is rectifying this with a new 2-LP edition, set to include these standout tracks. The 45rpm single, featuring 'Do You Feel Like I Feel' and 'Ghana,' highlights the core of Conte's vision: the soulful resonance of the former and the Latin-jazz flair of the latter. Both tracks are enhanced by Magnus Lindgren's arrangements and feature Gregory Porter, whose vocals, though still emerging at the time, are already a testament to his rising status in the jazz world. Review: Since emerging in their home country a decade ago, Caixa Cubo have flitted between labels (most notably Heavenly Recordings and Jazz 'N' Milk) while establishing trademark sound that expands on the jazz-funk-meets-samba-jazz template created by fellow countrymen Azymuth (like that band, they're a trio based around drums, bass and organ/electric piano). Unsurprisingly, they've now found a home on Joe Davis's Brazil-focused Far Out Recordings, a stable that has done much to champion Azymuth in the UK. Modo Avia (air mode) is typically warm, breezy and gently tropical, fusing killer grooves and infectious, off-kilter rhythms with brilliant solos, infectious riffs and far-sighted musical flourishes. It feels like the sort of set that will be talked about in hushed tones in 30 or 40 years, and we can think of no greater praise than that.

Review: On September 1, 1978, the musical trio Codona graced the stage in Willisau, Switzerland, just before their eponymous debut on ECM. This Swiss FM broadcast immortalised their performance, featuring Collin Walcott on sitar, Don Cherry on trumpet, and Nana Vasconcelos on percussion. Together, they spun a mesmerising tapestry of sound. The opening piece, 'New Light,' spans 16 minutes and evokes pure joy with its enchanting melodies and rhythmic intricacies. Codona's magical encounter showcases the seamless interplay of three masterful musicians and this record captures a moment of musical transcendence that continues to resonate to this day.

Review: Active since the late 80s, DJ Yoshizawa Dynamite is a celebrated DJ, remixer, compiler, and producer in Japan. An avid record collector and Wamono expert, he published the sold-out Wamono A to Z records guide in 2015, revealing rare Japanese groove records. DJ Chintam, a member of the Dayjam Crew and specialist in soul, funk, rare groove, and disco, opened Blow Up shop in Shibuya in 2018. Together, they created the Wamono A to Z guide. In this second volume of the Wamono series, Yoshizawa and Chintam showcase the best and rarest seventies' Japanese jazz, funk, soul, rare groove, and disco tunes.

Review: Citrus Sun - the eight-piece soul-jazz outfit helmed up by guitarist, bandleader and all-round personality Jean-Paul Maunick aka. Bluey - deliver their fourth album for Dome, the delightfully named Anaconga: a thoroughgoing homage to jazz and soul greats from back in the day. Made up of both covers and originals, the album opens with the gorgeous Maynard Ferguson tune 'Mister Mellow', with backing vocals from Tony Momrelle and Deborah Bond. Bluey and Richard Bull share production duties throughout; there's also 'Down For The Third Time', a deliciously funky remake of a classic Bobby Caldwell groove from 1978, with Natalie Duncan on vocals and Dominic Glover and Charlie Allen tearing it up on trumpet and guitar respectively; and 'Mystic Brew', originally written and recorded by keyboard legend Ronnie Foster, the inclsuion of which is a "thank you for his massive contribution to the music we love and are inspired by".

Review: Led by Kenny Clarke and Francy Boland, the Clarke-Boland Sextet was made up of further musical talents from across Europe and the United States such as Boland, Sahib Shihab, Jimmy Woode, Joe Harris, and Sadi. The group played a pivotal role in shaping the European jazz scene of the 60s, never more so than with their timeless Music For The Small Hours record in 1967. It takes in an array of influences and includes standards like Burt Bacharach's 'Wives & Lovers' as well as more Brazilian and Afro-Cuban groovers like Luiz Bonfa's 'Ebony Samba'. The original compositions shine too, with Shihab's 'Please, Don't Leave' showcasing his vocal talents and adding a real depth. Overall this is jazz that radiates sophistication and relaxation and makes for a refined listen.
