Review: It was France's l'Arome Productions that had first reissued this spectacular selection of Ethiopian soul and funk back in 2009 but, since then, this particular compilation has turned into something of a cult-classic within the digging world, and it has been repressed by Heavenly Sweetness on three different occasions. None of this is in the least bit surprising given just how special the sounds on here truly are, and if you're a fan of Mulatu then this will hit the spot big time! Moreover, tunes by the likes of Samuel Belay, Mahmoud Ahmed - who has appeared on Mississippi's reissue schedule - and Girma Beyene go much further than the usual dosage of far-out funk, leading us to a tense, dimly lit scenario that is both hypnotic and totally different from anything else. Highly recommended, a timeless slice of history.

Review: The roots of Wilderness America lie in the burgeoning environmental movement of the mid-70s, when Emily DeSpain Polk reached out to David Riordan to pull together a project that would help fund conservation projects. The results when Riordan teamed up Peter Scott to create this nature-minded concept album were stunning, but the album only received a limited distribution in the tradition of private press releases. As such, it's since become a holy grail for collectors which finally gets the release it deserves via EBALUNGA!! From the sweet, funky lilt of vocal tracks like 'Metropolis' to moody instrumentals like 'Flight of The Egret', the quality is unerring and more than worthy of this faithful reproduction.

They first linked up back in 2021 for the fine Midnight Shelter album which was emotive and intimate. That one reworked both classic and modern songs with some new moments in between and this one again reworks some classics by the likes of Billie Eilish, Paul Simon, Sam Smith, Peter Gabriel and others. It makes for something again lyrically powerful with beautifully emotive tunes and real honesty at their core. These personal reworks are things of real joy.

Review: One of two Nana Vasconcelos works to be rereleased on Altercat lately, Africadeus is a landmark album of Brazilian music that reveals the genius of the titular artist - regarded by many as one of the most innovative percussionists of all time. Above all, the album flaunts Nana's mastery of the berimbau, a Pan-African instrument that he essentially claimed as his own over the course of his career, and which he thus transformed into a bursting vessel for expression. A solo classic berimbau performance, 'Africadeus', appears on the A, while the B-siders 'Aboios' and 'Selecao De Folclore' are much more energetic pieces that celebrate the rich folkloric and pastoral culture of Nana's homeland.

Review: Encore has been remastered from the original tapes and features 11 compositions by Arthur Verocai who was joined by the legendary Azymuth, Ivan Lins and a nine-piece string section. The album was a long-awaited follow-up to his 1972 debut so bridges 35 years and bottles up Brazilian influences with American soul and cinematic experimentation. Initially overlooked amongst his wider canon, Verocai's debut gained cult status thanks to Far Out Recordings' Joe Davis who rediscovered it in the late 80s. In 2004, producer Dave Brinkworth brought Verocai back to the studio to reignite his musical brilliance. A master arranger, Verocai's work with Brazilian legends shaped his visionary sound and have helped to cement him as a timeless force in music history.

They now have to wait no longer as he has signed to La Sape Records and has finished his debut long player Eye To Eye. It is something of a conceptual masterpiece that traverses raw, organic concepts born in the moment and each of which represent his most refined and articulate work to date. Review: During the early 1980s, German composer Gerhard Trede donned the Victor Cavini alias for a trio of library music albums that have since become confirmed collector's items. Here dusty-fingered diggers Be With Records offer up a new re-mastered edition of the first of these, "Japan". As the title suggests, Trede's compositions are short "pictures" of the Far East nation built around traditional Japanese instrumentation and familiar musical tropes. They're all rather good though, evoking mental images of temples hidden in glades and the incidental music often found on some of the more bizarre martial arts movies of the '70s and '80s. If you dig library music with an exotic twist, they're well worth a listen.

Review: Panama '77 is the debut album from Chicago-based drummer Daniel Villareal, and it lands on a label he's orbited for a little while, International Anthem. Having participated in projects like Dos Santos and Ida Y Vuelta, he's now flying solo with a project described by the label as "a vibrant and verdant suite of multi-textural, jazz-laced psychedelic instrumental folk-funk." We couldn't have put it better ourselves, as Villareal's incredibly intricate percussion skitters around an incredible panoply of productions. It's as though you're taken into the beating heart of the charismatic musician's world hopping between jams, gigs, sessions and skits, riding in the back of his vintage baby blue Merc on 18th Street.

Review: After making some low-key waves with his Panama 77 LP, Daniel Villarreal is back with a unique document which pulls from the same era and mindset, but offers something very different. When in October 2020 he invited Jeff Parker and Anna Butterss to record in the backyard of Chicly Outpost in LA, it was the first jam the three had experienced post-lockdown. Some results from the session made it onto the last record, but now Villarreal has decided to focus squarely on these poignant sessions and pull out some of the finest material for our listening pleasure, and what a pleasure it surely is. Dusky, scratchy and honest, this is stripped down jamming jazz at its best.

Led by the innovative bass clarinetist Ville Lahteenmaki, this trio channels the spirit of American jazz legends from the 60s and 70s, blending energetic play, bold melodies, and intense improvisations that evoke the Dolphy-Murray-Mahall tradition. This reissued album showcases the trio's dynamic range and deep understanding of the genre. The opening track, 'Prelude,' sees Lahteenmaki's robust bass clarinet weaving through the frictional interplay between bassist Nicolas Leirtro and drummer Trym Saugstad Karlsen. This passage transitions into a swinging, bluesy feel, punctuated by a well-crafted bass solo. 'Shakti' features Lahteenmaki's rhythmic ingenuity and timbral exploration, creating a dense, fervent atmosphere that recalls the influence of John Coltrane and McCoy Tyner. The pace slows with 'Calling Alice,' a tribute to Alice Coltrane, where a repeated bass figure and rattling percussion create an aura of mysticism. The trio ventures into more complex territory with 'Mare Incognitum,' an uptempo piece in six, where Lahteenmaki's rapid-fire bass clarinet acrobatics take center stage, backed by Karlsen's imaginative drumming. The album closes with 'Best Wishes,' a contemplative piece that evokes Pharoah Sanders' spiritual explorations, ending the album on a quiet, introspective note. Lahteenmaki's trio boldly navigates the delicate balance between tradition and innovation, crafting a sound that is both daring and deeply engaging.
