Review: Most reggae scholars agree that dub maestro Lee 'Scratch' Perry was at his musical best during the period he spent working at the Black Ark studio. Two of the last albums recorded at the studio before it burned down in 1979 were "Black Ark In Dub" volumes one and two, which were eventually released in 1980 and '81 respectively. Here they're gathered together on CD for the first time. Volume 1 (disc one) sees Perry offer up weighty, spooky and out-there dubs of backing tracks created by his regular studio band, the Black Ark Players. Disc two expands on the more vocal-focused - but no less dubbed-out - sequel, showcasing alternate takes and extended mixes of popular Perry-produced singles from the period. In a word: essential.

Review: Since debuting in 2002, Honest Jon's series on "the sound of young black London" - entitled "London Is The Place For Me" - has done a terrific job in highlighting the changing sound of Afro-Caribbean music in Britain following the post-war rush of emigration from the Commonwealth to the UK. Here the label offers up a double-disc set boasting volumes seven and eight. The first disc focuses on calypso, mento, Joropo and steel band music from the 1950s and early 60s, with a multitude of former SS Empire Windrush passengers combining island rhythms with anglicized lyrics. Disc two looks at the career of calypso legend Lord Kitchener while he was resident in London (1948-62), offering a welcome celebration of the Trinidadian's rise to fame in his adopted home country.

Review: Doctor Bird's latest must-have archival release showcases some of the best work from Sonia Pottinger, a pioneering female producer from Jamaica who had a hand in some of the finest reggae to emerge during the 1970s and 80s. Nominally, the focus is two sought-after albums from vocalist Sonya Spence, 1978's "In The Dark" and 1981's "Sings Love", both of which offer a particularly loved-up, soulful and glassy-eyed set of songs. You'll find both albums back to back on CD1, with disc two focused on some of Pottinger's other productions for female vocalists and artists. In truth, the collection is worth buying for this disc alone, which offers a great introduction to Pottinger's wider body of work.

Review: Duke Reid's Treasure Isle was a behemoth of a label that very much defined the sound of an era almost single-handedly. This particular compilation was first put out in 1970 and was an immediate best seller: it details the transformation of late rocksteady into early reggae and takes in all the essentials from that time, making it a must for fans of the sixties sounds, or those looking to brush up on their knowledge. The orange vinyl features gems from Joya Landis, Tommy McCook, Alton Ellis and Winston Wright.

Review: The Treasure Isle Recording Studio is unparalleled when it comes to some of the biggest rocksteady hits to come out of Jamaica. On this essential reissue, some of its greatest output is explored on tenor sax by Tommy McCook - an original pioneer of the sound and one of Jamaica's most celebrated musicians - and produced by the legendary Duke Reid of the Trojan Sound System. This is music from a golden era, when rocksteady outshone the more upbeat ska, and focus was shifted to song based material, with elements of r&b and blues all reimagined through a decidedly Jamaican lens.

Review: The latest Studio One release to be released on Soul Jazz Records features a stellar line-up of Jamaica's finest ever musicians. The legendary Skatalites, alongside the later Studio One in-house bands the Soul Vendors, Sound Dimension, Soul Defenders and Brentford All Stars, were as much a part of the classic Studio One sound as were the singers that they accompanied, such as Alton Ellis, Horace Andy, Marcia Griffiths and Bob Marley And The Wailers. This album features many of the musicians involved with Studio One who literally defined Reggae music. From the Skatalites members Tommy McCook, Roland Alphonso and Jackie Mittoo to killer sidemen such as trombonist Vin Gordon (aka Don Drummond Jnr), saxophonist Cedric 'Im' Brooks, keyboardist and Twelve Tribes Of Israel member Pablove Black. Many of the rhythms that these musicians created became the backbone of the Jamaican musical world and their songs have been replayed and re-versioned by 1000s of Reggae producers ever since. The album features classic and super-rare tracks all recorded under Clement 'Sir Coxsone' Dodd's supervision at the legendary recording studio and record label. As well as seventeen killer tracks, the album comes with new sleeve notes and photography by Dennis Morris and Adrian Boot, making this another essential Studio One Reggae release for connoisseurs of Reggae and newcomers alike.

Review: Back in 2002, Soul Jazz released Hustle, a superb "reggae disco" primer containing killer reggae covers of classic disco hits, mostly recorded and released in the late 1970s. Given that Caribbean disco sounds are now all the range, they've decided to reissue the in-demand collection. Naturally, it contains some stellar material, from Xanadu and Sweet Lady's feminine cover of "Rapper's Delight" and One Bloody's wonderfully positive and laidback cover of William de Vaughan's "Be Thankful For What You've Got", to the dancefloor dynamite that is Risco Connection's brilliant cover of McFadden & Whitehead's "Ain't No Stopping Us Now". Throw in Black Harmony's sublime version of Jean Carn's "Don't Let It Go To Your Head" and you have an essential collection.

Review: Classics are classics for a reason, and this compilation champions them across a whopping 3-disc set. All four sides are jam packed with firm reggae favourites from Bob Marley's stirring "Soul Rebel" to the buttery croons of Gregory Isaacs on "Babylon Too Rough". Mick Hucknall's inclusion will raise some eyebrows, but there is no denying his version of "Night Nurse" with Sly & Robbie has something going on. Smokers will delight in ganga odes from Eek-a-mouse and the lovable innocence of The Congos hit "La La Bam-Bam" will always have a place in anyone's affections.

Review: Honest Jon's "London Is The Place For Me" series has been dormant for a while, but previously offered a much-needed history lesson in the musical contribution made by Afro-Caribbean immigrants in the capital city during the post-war period. This seventh volume - the first for six years - continues this admirable approach by focusing on calypso, mento, Joropo and steel band music. It's a wonderfully eye-opening collection that includes a mixture of tracks by well-known musical SS Empire Windrush passengers - Lord Beginner being the most famous - as well as lesser-known lights who combined Island rhythms and instrumentation with lyrics about life in Britain. Superb stuff.

Review: Since launching late last year, Harlem Shuffle Records has reissued a string of killer reggae recordings from the 1960s and 70's. Here the imprint offers up its first compilation, a 14-track selection of early reggae, dub and rocksteady hand-picked from the vaults of such legendary labels as Black Swan, Blue Cat, Duke, Doctor Bird, High Note and Trojan. It's a fine and hugely entertaining collection all told, with highlights including the easy, laidback skank of Stranger & Patsy's 'Tell it to Me', the trumpet-laden instrumental shuffle of 'Walk With Des' by Des All Stars, the Hammond-powered dancefloor heaviness of Clancy Collins' 'Brother Moses' and the prototype dub brilliance of 'Black Out' by the Hardy Boys.

Review: ***B-STOCK: Split on top & spine of outer sleeve, but otherwise in perfect condition***

Since launching late last year, Harlem Shuffle Records has reissued a string of killer reggae recordings from the 1960s and 70's.

Review: Later this spring, authors Paul 'Smiler' Anderson and Mark 'Bax' Baxter will release "Scorcha!", a coffee table book celebrating the skinhead and suedehead movement of the late 1960s and early '70s. For the uninitiated, it was a largely white British working class movement inspired by both the dress of the Windrush generation and the ska, rocksteady and reggae music they brought with them from the Caribbean. This excellent ten disc seven-inch box set from Trojan has been designed as a musical accompaniment to the book. It boasts a wealth of classic cuts popular within the skinhead and suedehead scenes, both from well-known Jamaican artists and those that have largely been overlooked.
