Long Weekend EP
Cat: 53 BC. Rel: 06 Mar 20
Saturday (7:05)
Sunday (10:53)
Tuesday (feat Jakub Ziolek) (5:34)
Wednesday (feat Jakub Ziolek) (5:40)
Review: UK-Polish duo Holden & Zimpel return with more adventures in Kraut-jazz-techno, if that's even a thing. The description certainly makes sense on 'Saturday', which opens the scoring here on a tip that is at once informed by Underground Resistance, drone-y avant-garde and something with flutes. Starting as it means to go on, to say the least. From there we run through days of the week in order to 'Wednesday', making this one of the longest weekends we can think of in some time. 'Sunday''s distorted strings sounding almost like a strange species communicating via fraught noises. 'Tuesday' is more rhythmically balanced, almost risking coming close to more standard electronica as its melodies reach ever higher, before the final number closes out with an air of euphoria and subtle drive.

Venetian Blinds
Cat: STR 012026. Rel: 11 Apr 19
Kyoto - "Venetian Blinds" (4:34)
Zoe Sinatra - "Mais Qu'est-ce Que Tu Fumes" (4:12)
Review: The Belgian crate diggers behind the STROOM label have dug up more overlooked gold here, bringing together two disparate but equally impressive tracks. On the A-side you'll find Kyoto's 1984 single "Venetian Blinds", a curious but hugely enjoyable chunk of bustling, off-kilter synth-pop rich in crunchy machine drums, undulating bass, Prince style guitars and stylish female vocals. Over on the flip it's all about Zoe Sinatra's 1990 B-side "Mais Qu'est-ce Que Tu Fumes". This semi slow-motion affair wraps half-whispered, half-sung bi-lingual vocals and alien synthesizer melodies around a rubbery but chugging electronic groove.

Polymorph (extended mix)
Polymorph (ASC mix)
Polymorph (Zake remix)
Polymorph (Aural Imbalance remix)
Polymorph (Ossa remix)
Polymorph (Influx remix)
Polymorph (Fax remix)
Review: Past Inside The Present welcomes back accomplished and prolific ambient master zake, this time alongside Oss and Fax who released the original featured track, 'Polymorph' on Module. Here it gets revisited by a top contemporary team after the hazy and absorbing extended mix kicks things off. ASC then goes dark with his mood rework and Zake himself remixes with a more optimistic sense of crepuscular synth lushness. Aural Imbalance layers in some fizzing and malfunctioning electronic sounds, Ossa suspends you amongst his heavenly rays and Influx brings gently broken beats. Fax shuts down this varied offering with a more edgy ambient sound.

Mental Syndicate (6:13)
Mental Syndicate (Rude 66 Space Psycho rework) (6:05)
Review: Minimood's often deep and dubby take on minimal and techno gets a trippy rewiring here courtesy of this fine new EP from Zakmina. His two magical originals are couched in chugging dark disco but come embellished with Zouk melodies and mystic Middle Eastern-sounding leads that bring plenty of atmosphere and colour. Also included are two remixes from Curses and Rude 66. The first is a wonderful Spaghetti-Wave Redux to twist your melon and the second is a Space Psycho rework with cosmic and Italo influences taking the chilly beats to the stars.

Plastic Love (5:01)
Plastic Love (instrumental version) (3:47)
Review: Zed's 1983 disco classic 'Plastic Love' has been huge since day dot. It has been reissued a couple of times over the years and always sells out. This latest version comes on 12" from Italy's Spittle Dependence label and features the original and instrumental versions. The drum-machine grooves are stripped back but compelling the crisp hits power the groove forwards and the deadpan vocal oozes cool. Add in some lovely retro synth work and you have an undeniable banger that has as much of an impact now as it ever has.

Zmatsutsi - "Psychedelic Frogs Are Ok" (8:50)
Tross - "Gallium" (5:01)
Houschyar - "Einstieg" (5:46)
Review: All three tracks here have a quality to them that suggests things could easily boot off at any moment, tension that rises and evolves and plays with intensity levels in very pleasing but never obvious ways. 'Psychedelic Frogs' is perhaps the best case in point, sending us spinning out into various cosmic realms that feel several planes above us. It's funk-disco-synth-leftfield business and we spent about an hour trying to come up with a more accurate, definitive description. We couldn't, which is indicative of what this sounds like.

Similarly label-defying is 'Gallium', a tune that seems to have been cut from the same cloth as 1960s spy themes and King of Woolworths productions. Closing out on the rumbling keyboard stabs of staccato builder 'Einstieg', it's not that they don't make them like this anymore, more that they have never really made much like this, period.

Message (3:29)
Liberation (6:24)
Review: Zombies Under Stress is a one-man project that dates back to the mid 1980s. Fanatism & Hysteria is the outfit's main LP, and it's still considered one of the defining works of the whole EBM era, surpassing even the likes of Nitzer Ebb in the minds of certain diggers. Berlin's Mannequin is the perfect place to have some of its tunes reissued, and "Stalin" is the one of the tunes from that original LP that still sounds so damn fresh to this day thanks to that raw, distorted, pseudo-acid bassline conquering its full 5+ minutes; the remix from Seven Sisters Of Putin offers a straighter, more club-friendly version. "Message" is from 1996, and its ominous groove hasn't aged a day since, whereas 1985's "Liberation" is some straight up noise cacophony for those feeling a little satanic. Another winner from Mannequin - essential!

The Zone Identity - "Knight Rider" (3:27)
J Zone - "9 Breaks" (The Warm Up) (2:36)
Review: .Back in 2021 when he first dropped this one, The Zone Identity had been away for two years. It was a fine return though that now comes with a special Japanese Edition sleeve. The project is an anonymous one but they excel at soul-jazz grooves and tasteful covers of classic material and that this one is led by drummer Jay Mumford. 'Knight Rider' is a super cover of the title tune of the iconic 80s show. It's replayed with heavy drums snapping beneath the classic synth phrasing and some extra late night vibes. J-Zone then offers a slow motion workout with '9 Breaks (The Warm Up).' Still fresh.

Direct Contact (6:41)
Ravioli Ocean (6:39)
Review: Fresh from an impressive outing on Lazare Hoche Records, rejuvenated duo Zoo Look pop up on E-Beamz with two righteous slabs of mystical peak-time goodness. A-side "Direct Contact" offers a near perfect blend of rugged, undulated acid lines, bustling hardcore-style breakbeats and shimmering, sci-fi inspired chords. While undeniably fresh sounding, there's no denying the early '90s rave influences at play. There's a similarly retro-futurist feel to flipside "Ravioli Ocean", a wonderfully glassy-eyed, sunrise-ready affair that smothers a driving beat in tactile chords, morning-fresh synthesizer flourishes and undulating piano lines that sent shivers up and down our spines.

LC4 (4:34)
Review: Noiztank co-founder Zosima has been surprisingly quiet of late, with his last release of note - the suitably intense and dystopian "Apropos Of The Wet Snow" - dropping back in 2017. As the title suggests "Live Cuts I" is made up of fuzzy, lo-fi workouts that were recorded to tape during live shows in Madrid, Berlin and Vienna. All four are suitably atmospheric and spontaneous in feel, in keeping with the producer's sweaty, hardware-driven performances. What you get is full-throttle industrial techno full of head-mangling distorted drums, rhythmic white noise and - on the clandestine "LC3" and paranoid "LC1" - a sliver of wild-eyed melodic intent. Not for the faint hearted, but well worth your attention if you like your grooves raw, ragged and full-throttle.

Review: In announcing his own Death & Leisure label, we had hoped it might prove to be a portal to a wealth of archival material from Oliver Ho. It seems like these expectations might be met as an all too enticing cross section of Zov Zov material lands pretty soon after Ho kicked off Death & Leisure with a Broken English Club 7". For those unfamiliar with Zov Zov, it's Ho's long-running project with Tommy Gillard whose only prior release was a 10" on the now-defunct Avian offshoot Mira. We dive back into the Zov Zov archive with glee on the scraping, gothic and clamorous collection of tracks that is Sacred Pornography of God, a six-track mini album that will delight the more devilish souls out there.

Review: Anyone who needs proof that dance music can permeate the boundaries of nations, cultures and societies wants to check Zuli, if you haven't already. The Cairo-producer, who has found favour with the likes of Wire and Pitchfork, makes music that sounds like a delivery of drum 'n' bass thundering through a weighty dose of techno, topped with the staccato trappings and trap, juke and footwork - not necessarily predominant sounds on the Egyptian club scene, which is often more house and progressive focussed.

His latest EP, All Caps, is basically six calling cards for the music maker's style. Opening on ferociously unforgiving, industrial-leaning hardcore, even the most low-slung here, 'Penicillin Duck', or the more melodic (the choppy waves of synth on 'Keen Demang') feel like someone has hit the Melt button on your mind. Tread carefully, then, but definitely be sure to tread.

Review: Having previously plied his trade on Lee Gamble's UIQ imprint, Zuli (real name Ahmed El Ghazoly) resurfaces on Milan-based "irregular noise" specialists Haunter. The Egyptian multi-instrumentalist and producer is renowned for producing tracks seeped in noise and blessed with notably jagged beats, and as expected there's more imaginative dystopian madness throughout Trigger Finger. For example, "X3" melds together distorted noise, heavily manipulated spoken word samples, punishing sub bass and grizzly guitars, while the title track is the kind of mind-bending, post-jungle insanity that used to be a feature of the late 90s UK IDM scene. The EP's less rhythmically minded moments, such as creepy opening soundscape "Everyday", are also impressive.

Review: The world has found itself in a significant hurry. We have also found ourselves in the most distracted period of time in history; finding it tremendously difficult to remain in a moment of stillness, quietude, or allow time for self-reflection. Conversely, our vast universe continues its expansion into infinite development; a climate of deafening silence in a boundless four-dimensional continuum. It remains mesmerizing with a quiet allure that freely suspends in space-time; a true account of the beautiful unknown that sparks hope, reverence, and an awesome realization of impenetrable mystery.

"Stasis Sounds For Long-Distance Space Travel" is audibly rich in its delivery with an array of tranquil billows and patient tones. It is a journey and soundtrack that commences at Earth's thermosphere, gently moving towards the untraveled parts of space, lushly floating on forever.

These arrangements represent a group of celestial transmissions that are delicate in nature and intended for the listener to embrace moments of stillness, quietude and reflection, of which are on a trajectory of extinction at a place we call Earth.
