Isms & Schisms (4:42)
Magistrates Dub (4:19)
Review: Hidden Sequence returns, this time to kick off a new label Magistrate, and hot on the heels of their quick-to-sell out 'Silent Roots' last year. This fresh EP seamlessly bridges classic 70s Jamaican dub with modern, bass-heavy and dubwise delights, starting with 'Isms & Schisms'. The horns are brilliantly inviting as are the low ends which have been well worked on a vast desk and come packed with echo and effects. 'Magistrates Dub' is an immediately infectious skank that shifts into a deep, dub-heavy exploration and unites past and present dub influences.

Review: Having celebrated his 50th birthday late last year, Ryan Adams has naturally been in an introspective mood. It makes sense, then, that the long-serving rock/country fusionist should offer up an album made up entirely of covers of songs by other artists that have in some way inspired him over the years. Generally gentle, with string-laden, largely acoustic arrangements, Changes features some genuinely brilliant interpretations - as well as some surprise ones. For proof, check his piano-and-strings wander through 'Panic' by the Smiths, a wonderfully heartfelt rendition of 'Don't You (Forget About Me)' by Simple Minds, a country-folk take on the Rolling Stones 'Sympathy For The Devil' and a lilting, poignant Prince cover ('When Doves Cry', which comes complete with extended harmonica solos and some genuinely lilting strings).

Minimal House/Tech House
Track 1 (6:54)
Review: Three Es would be some trip, and EEE also symbolises guaranteed good times in the club. The mysterious label and eponymous artists keep on rolling out essential tech and minimal cuts that are smartly designed and authentic, but also with anthem potential. Maybe that's why each one is a one-sided 12", to really allow the tune room to shine. In this case, dusty drums with a hint of garage swing and shuffle are paired with melodic baseline motifs and colourful synth patterns. It's a good time groove with plenty of heart.

Them Things (4:25)
A Madness (5:18)
Not Him Again (4:32)
Review: After a quiet return via Neroli, Domu comes full circle to 2000black with a final statement after 25 years of sonic highs, lows and plenty of reinvention. Haunted by the echoes of jungle's past, Domu steps away for good, he says, with this final outing, which leaves behind three deeply personal tracks. 'A Madness' brims with urgent, sample-heavy energy and signature keys. 'Not Him Again' is a jam with longtime collaborator Robert Marin that plays with tempo and hip-hop norms. 'Them Things' then seeks to capture an elusive feeling and closes an EP that is Domu at his most reflective and raw. The end of an era. Don't let it pass you by.

The Outlaw Torn
Review: Originally released in 1996, the sixth full-length from the biggest of the "Big Four" of thrash, saw the Los Angeles metal titans subvert any and all expectations with an embracing of hard rock, grunge and Americana, complete with a controversial makeover that swapped out ripped jeans for leather pants and cropped haircuts. Returning to work with Bob Rock following the global success of 1991's Black Album, the well-documented 80s-to-90s transitional identity crisis would result in enough material for two albums, released one year apart in the form of Load and Reload. Although initially lambasted upon release by genre purists, the three decades since have seen cuts such as 'Ain't My Bitch', 'The House Jack Built' and 'Until It Sleeps' become accepted as live staples and fan favourites, while the folk-balladry of 'Mama Said' and the epic closer 'The Outlaw Torn' are now perceived as quintessential Metallica. Celebrating its 30th anniversary just a year early with a slew of different reissue sets, this straight up gatefold double LP focuses squarely on the original album, fully remastered by Reuben Cohen, whilst offering, for the first time ever, the original extended version of 'The Outlaw Torn' that was originally edited due to manufacturing limits.

Review: Bobby Lyle's 1977 classic jazz-funk album showcases his well-renowned keyboard mastery with standout tracks like the inventive title cut, 'The Genie,' which is a wild groove-driven journey through multiple shifts. His rendition of 'Night Breeze,' previously recorded by Ronnie Laws, is another highlight and the mystical 'Mother Nile' features deep rhythms while the dreamy mid-tempo roller 'Pisces' soothes. Up-tempo 'Magic Ride' and atmospheric 'You Think Of Her' showcase Bobby's rich vocals and a stellar lineup including Roland Bautista, Babatunde, Victor Feldman, Ernie Watts, and Donnie Beckhelp make this it's a definitive jazz-funk fusion gem.

Review: Aachen Jazz Files is a tribute to NABEL Records, a groundbreaking German jazz label active from 1980 to 1994. This new and essential compilation has been curated by Miche and Rainer Truby and highlights NABEL's unique fusion of acoustic jazz, Brazilian rhythms and avant-garde influences. Featuring gems like Monika Linges Quartet's samba-infused grooves, John Thomas & Lifeforce's cosmic explorations and Maria Joao's expressive vocals, this collection captures Aachen's rich jazz heritage from every angle. Though it was once a hidden gem, NABEL's sound has since travelled worldwide and its sophistication and warmth shine through here from a most distinctive era of jazz.

Review: The most aptly-named record label in the world, Light Sounds Dark present another collection of wildly experimental bits and pieces cultivated in the lab of things that you simply don't hear in other places. Suitably christened 'Track 1', 'Track 2', and so on until 'Track 29', this is a huge point of entry for newcomers to the LSD realm and an excellent deep dive for veterans alike. Winds howl and thunder crashes before beautiful harmonies change the vibe from cold to warm, Gregorian chants echo in and out above dubby, stubby beats, and post punk guitars lunge forward beneath jerky, naive melodies. And that's just the first few parts here. A journey to the outer reaches of the musical universe, then back again, turning left at the industrial jazz and continuing through shoegaze, soundtrack, field and weirdo pop. Mind you don't get lost, now.

Review: Matti Turunen is no stranger to Vortex Traks as he had previously dropped music here and appeared on the label's very first release and also later as part of Morphology. This, however, is his solo debut and it's a classy exploration of melodic electro. 'Tharsis' kicks off with lithe synths and sheet metal sounds flapping in a stiff cosmic wind. 'Pavonis' is deeper and more heady, 'Arsia' is built on neck-snapping drum patterns and 'Ascraeus' rides on plaintive pads. Last but not least is a collaboration with Dora Gray, 'Daedalia', which is an ambient-laced delight.

Review: What planet were you born on? To be honest, it never really matters with Light Sounds Dark. Sent off in search of intelligent sounds from across the universe, the label has been amassing but never pillaging a vast array of tones from various corners of the known and unknown cosmos for time now, although the exact hour and date is really dependent on your relationship with the continuum. LSD 046 makes this point clear as ever. Numbered tracks are all your getting in terms of being able to catalogue and make sense of what's here, adding to the idea that your lost in a realm that's neither there nor there. Tunes fizzle and gargle, slow strings refrain, lo fi Kraut shouts beneath the crackle of analogue, intergalactic organs ring out into silence. And then we run out of words to possibly describe what's on the record long before the last episode.

Take 2 (6:57)
Review: US veteran JT Donaldson makes the sort of killer tech house that immediately makes you want to move. This time out the Dallas, Texas resident lands on Dolfin Records with a deeper sound that is raw and heavy. 'Choose' rides on knackered-sounding kick with just deft synth smears for company. 'Don't Sweat' has a double-time rhythm with sombre chords adding the soul and 'Want Her Around' gets the hips swinging with its lovely claps, muted, softly glowing sustained synths and lumpy deep house drums. Flipping the script yet again. 'Sunday Drive' is a more nimble and jazzy dancer and 'Take 2' is a sunny house sound with hints of Metro Area nu-disco synth magic and a big fat bassline.

Originally released on Cheri Records half a century ago, this sought-after 7" has fetched prices of around L50 on the collector's market. Review: Forget the World is a psychedelic instrumental trio led by bassist-composer Marc Decho, who is based in Toronto, Canada, and known for his work with Afro-Cuban jazz pianist Miguel de Armas. Decho brings a fresh, genre-blending sound to the scene and this group blends a real gamut of vibes - 70s soul-jazz, alternative hip-hop, cinematic textures, dreamy LA pop, UK Bruk, Afro-Brazilian rhythms, classical and experimental electronica. Joined by James Hill on Fender Rhodes and synths and Marito Marques on drums, percussion and electric kalimba, their music is immersive and imaginative. It's mixed and mastered by Grammy-winner Helik Hadar and offers a great escape into a new world of awareness.

Review: This new one from Stefan Ringer on his FWM Entertainment combines two distinct releases in one: 3 tracks from his 2021 Meta Music EP and his darker alias Black Sued's 'Rogue' EP. It's a yin-yang journey of sound that shows his range and quality. 'Monotone' pairs signature deep chords and soulful vocals and distorted bass with minimal drums, while 'New Plan' is a driving, rhythmic workout of persistence and groove. 'YIA' offers meditative chords and affirmations set against a thunderstorm backdrop and the flip, the title cut explores shadowy jazz textures with a mysterious groove, 'Maze' marches forward with urgency and layered rhythm, while 'Deep Dirt' closes with gritty, broken-machine chaos. Together, these EPs make for a powerful emotional and sonic contrast.

Review: This sizzling Hammond B-3 laced two-sider from Tommy Sims is a funk-infused gem that would make legends like Jimmy Smith and Brother Jack McDuff do a double-take. Bursting with soulful groove and rich, swirling organ tones, each side delivers brilliant vintage jazz-funk. The lead track lays down deep, bluesy riffs over tight drums and nimble bass, while the flip brings a more playful, upbeat vibe with sunny and infectious swing and crisp solos. Classic organ-driven soul-jazz never sounded better and this is proof that the mighty B-3 still reigns supreme when placed in the right hands.

Review: As well as being a dance music figurehead. Paul Oakenfold is a devoted film buff who brought cinematic flair to his soundtrack for Dominic Sena's action-thriller Swordfish. Crafting a moody, high-tech sonic landscape and blending the tense energy of Dope Smugglaz's 'The Word (PMT Remix)' with the chill sunrise vibes of Lemon Jelly's 'Kneel Before Your God' and his own electro rework of 'Planet Rock' with Afrika Bambaataa, Oakenfold paints a vivid picture of early 2000s Los Angeles nightlife. Tracks like 'Stanley's Tune' and 'Password' evoke neon-lit scenes of decadence and danger. Subtle yet imaginative, this record rewards headphone listening for max impact.

All The Quiet (Part II) is a colourful collision of jazz, funk, dub, hip-hop and soul that was entirely written, produced and mixed by the man himself. His work as part of Mercury Prize-winning Ezra Collective is what established Armon-Jones, but his evolution as a solo artist on his own label, Aquarii Records, has been just as essential. This follow-up to 2019's Turn To Clear View features collaborators like Greentea Peng, Yazmin Lacey, Hak Baker and Nubya Garcia and is a deeply personal sound that veers from expansive and cosmic to more intimate and tender.

Review: Discos Quilombo's next 45 is a reissue of 'El Amor Es Un Bicho' (you can work out our own translation) by Los Martinicos, and it's a scorching hot and rare gem from 1969, originally recorded by Henry Nelson in Spain. 'El Amor Es Un Bicho' is all big energy and playful vocalisations, South American rhythms and bold horns, the moody 'El Diablo' has a darker bassline and more menacing energy but is packed with late 60s Latin flair. Both of these are wonderfully infectious South American soul tracks that will not be around for long, so make sure you snag them fast.

Art Neville, Leo Nocentelli, George Porter Jr., Zigaboo Modeliste and Cyril Neville all showed top form in a performance highlighting tracks from 'Rejuvenation' and previewed its follow up, Fire On The Bayou. Review: Neil Percival Young. Canada's finest musical export? Buffalo Springfield founder, sometime member of Crosby, Stills and Nash and, as of 2025, the man behind The Chrome Hearts. He's always got something to say, and plenty to play, and whenever a new project is announce it's more than worth getting excited about. And that's before you hear this latest trip into folk-Americana territory. In many ways, this is typical Young. Stories of the journeyman, the everyday people and the struggle - all told by gently bleeding guitars and with an air of reflection. Tracks are personal and yet outward looking, including one which takes a swipe at Elon Musk - targeted within a wider conversation about crappy American cars. But then The Chrome Hearts definitely feel like a fresh chapter, and one that continues the decade-spanning saga with new ideas and energy.

Review: In his reaction to Manchester recently becoming the new home for the Brit awards, fledgling prime minister Keir Starmer proceeded to give a rundown of the groups that defined Manchester. He mentioned Joy Division, Take That, but there was outrage 'round these parts for his glaring omission of short-lived post-punk three-piece bIG*fLAME. Fortunately, Precious Recordings of London know the score and have stepped up to release all four Peel sessions recorded between 1984 and 1986. There's everything they recorded plus a few they didn't. The band made a point of keeping songs close to the two-minute mark and in that short space of time created more excitement than most manage across an entire oeuvre. It's no wonder John Peel described the band as "one of the two or three very best bands of Planet Earth" and also called them "the best dance band since Glenn Miller & His Orchestra". Copies of this won't hang around for long.

(Love) Undeniable (3:46)
Review: In 1995, longtime 90s Japanese hip-hop pioneer DJ CPM Marvin released the 'Masters Of Funk' project, which featured standout tracks 'Kool Like Otis' (which brings a thick drum groove reminiscent of Digable Planets' 'Rebirth of Slick') and '(Love) Undeniable.' The former gained significant attention after being used in a Japanese car commercial. It laid out a blueprint for fast-paced, jazzy and funky hip-hop sound. Now, these tracks are available for the first time on a W-SIDER 7" and they're set to be dominant just as much as the first time around because they still sound fresh.

Review: Norm Talley has put together a second volume of his Unity series on his own label Upstairs Asylum. It features his nearest and dearest from Chicago and Detroit, all of whom of course serve up perfectly smoky and stripped back deep house and techno grooves to make you move. Delano Smith's characteristic loops lock you in from the off on 'Big City Nights,' Norm himself pairs dub techno chords with suggestive techno stabs that keep you on edge and Brian Kage's 'Poly-Phonic Phonk' is heady, dreamy, richly melodic house bets listened to in a cosy back room at 4am.

Review: Madrid-based Sinouj blends Mediterranean roots with contemporary jazz, funk, rock and West African rhythms on this wonderful new 7". Their inclusive approach brings together influences from flamenco, Iranian classical, soul and modern jazz, all of which can be heard here in music that feels both global and uniquely theirs. Their latest release reimagines 'Hak Dellali,' a North African classic popularised in the 80s by Tunisian and Emirati artists. Sinouj transforms the song with Moroccan chaabi beats and Tuareg blues-rock energy, and it has become a staple and standout of their live shows. A psychedelic remix by Berlin's Voodoocuts adds a club-ready angle.

Review: Visions' debut 7" on LA's CQQL Records is a big statement that tears apart the DNA of several kerned and rewires them into something intriguingly fresh. The A-side 'Reaching For The Infinite' offers a fusion of mid-tempo Balearic boogie and digital dub with tropical percussion and new age melodies, all creating an alluring and escapist soundscape to an imagined future disco in a faraway paradise. On the B-side, 'Back To Fire' defies conventional categorisation as it shifts between slow and fast tempos so delivers an unpredictable and dynamic trip for bold dance floor excursions.

Review: Melbourne's Tim Jackiw brings a retro future vision to this latest sweaty workout on the Physical Education label. 'Manifestation' is a full singlet on, socks up, headband in place, striding forward electro jam with nice cosmic energy and 'Multi Pass' then brings wistful Detroit synth work and sleek grooves designed for heady escape. 'House Wine' keeps the deep and driving dynamic flowing with more dusty drum programming and meaningful synth work and 'Unseen Forces' then gets more raw and percussive. Last but not least, 'Taking Measures' shuts down with some reflective moods and slower tempos.

Review: Texas-based Ben Hixon and Atlanta's Stefan Ringer collide on this new split EP for the increasingly vital Dolfin label. It is Ringer who starts with a tight, grinding groove on 'Moving Walkway' with spoken word snippets and kaleidoscopic synth sequences bringing a trippy and unusual energy to the menacing bass. His 'PLGLY' (SR Big Room mix) is then a heavy beatdown with synths that snap and crack while jazzy percussion and dark vocals bring extra character. Hixon's 'Feels Extremely Good' is a busy, off-balance mix of deep house drums and mind-melting synth refrains while 'My Family' offer a blissed-out and soul-drenched closer.

It drills deep into the heart of a smoky, strobe-lit dance floor while also offering plenty of mental soundscapes to explore with your eyes closed. 'DT103' has crisp breaks and warped bass under shards of broken, glassy melody and 'DD1' then floats on a more skeletal rhythm with grazing background pads and apocalyptic bass. The Technical Itch remix brings even more in-your-face textured percussion and 'MB29' shuts down with a cosmic exploration and skittish drum patterns.

His is an early roots vocal version with trombone player Vin Gordon adding bold brass notes to the buttery vocals of Holt which rides smooth over a warm riddim. On the flip, I Roy's excellent DJ cut 'Make Love' hits hard and lands heavy, so it's one to crank up nice and loud on a hot day, or any day for that matter. Review: As they prepare to squabble, rock out and reprise their infamously hooky riffs at a series of sold-out reunion shows, Oasis have decided to reissue their official best-off collection, 2010's Time Flies...1994-2009. Now presented in remastered, souped-up form, the two-disc set showcases all 27 of their UK singles (including non-album cuts 'Whatever' and 'Lord Don't Slow Me Down') as well as a hidden bonus track ('Sunday Morning Call', which appears two minutes after the final cut on disc two). While plenty of high points and fan favourites are missing, it does a great job in reminding us that Oasis were, at their very best, an iconic indie-rock band - as highlights such as 'Supersonic', 'Cigarettes & Alcohol', 'Some Might Say' and the epic 'All Around The World' emphatically prove.

That said, the British post punk outfit only managed to peak at 79 in the album charts with this one, so clearly back in 1982 plenty of people either felt differently to us or weren't actually listening. Rediscovering the record now confirms their ignorance. Musically, Sense & Sensuality is a far broader collection than the group's preceding work, smashing through the limitations of a genre that was in its Informed by free form jazz, theatrical cabaret, new wave and art pop, it's a wild and unarguably fun ride instrumentally speaking, while lyrics speak to personal challenges and timely political issues.

Review: Arriving in 1997, a time when the UK's music scene was awash with Britpop and various electronic sub-genres, Unleash The Beast lands between their NWOBHM 80s glories and their subsequent re-adoption as metal national treasures, but that shouldn't put you off. It takes more than a few fads to put the Barnsley crew off their stride and they sound like they're firing on all cylinders on 'The Thin Red Line' or 'The Preacher', which neatly incorporates a ZZ Top-type headnodding funkiness and unusually Bon Scott-esque vocal into their well worn twin guitar trademarks. There are cursory nods to stadium rock and thrash metal here, but Saxon have always stayed relevant by doing what they do best rather than pandering to fashion. You know what they do - and if you like it, you'll love this.

The record focused on Brandy's personal growth while addressing relationship woes and self-reflection in tracks like 'I Tried' and 'Who I Am.' The standout song, 'I Tried,' samples Iron Maiden's 'The Clansman' and features Brandy's most raw and emotional performance. The shift resonated with fans for its gritty, more relatable edge and remains her most well-received project.

Review: On Jupiter finds American cult heroes Sun Ra and his Arkestra charting bold new orbits in 1979. Their cosmic jazz was again infused with funk, soul and electronic experimentation and was recorded during a wildly prolific stretch in New York. The newly reissued album feels both grounded in groove and untethered from reality. The slinky bounce of 'UFO,' the celestial drift of the title track and the kaleidoscopic sprawl of 'Seductive Fantasy' showcase Ra's expanding sonic vision in real time. As the musical world tilted toward disco and hip-hop, Sun Ra forged his own path by melding deep bass, astral synths and Afro-futurist chants into an otherworldly sound that still feels ahead of its time.
