An Object In Motion
Cat: DAIS 205CD. Rel: 12 Oct 23
Vanity (feat Rachel Goswell)
Cape Perpetua
The Skin & The Glove
Yield To Force
Review: Described by their label, Dais, as "a stirring new chapter" in their musical story, 'An object of Motion' has its roots in a coastal break main man Deb Demure made back in 2021. It was material recorded there, largely using a vintage, bowl-shaped 12-string guitar, that formed the basis of the four-track mini-album. These recordings were then expanded on with help from collaborators Rachel Goswell (Slowdive), Justin Meldal-Johnsen and Ben Greenberg. It's a decidedly psychedelic set all told, with Demure and company blurring the boundaries between neo-folk, psychedelia, the Cure, shoegaze and the sort of saucer-eyed, turn-of-the-90s bagginess associated with the Stone Roses. Most impressive of all, though, is 'Yield To Force', an undeniably cosmic, layered and effects-laden instrumental that ebbs and flows over 15 magical minutes.

Confluence
Review: Fresh from curating a fine compilation marking 25 years of his admirable DiN label, Ian Boddy unleashes the latest in a long-line of collaborative works. He's previously released joint studio works alongside Chris Carter, Erik Wollo and Mark Shreeve, amongst others and here is in cahoots with Parallel Worlds member (and DiN semi-regular) Dave Bessell. In true ambient fashion, Polarity boasts a two-part, near 52-minute title track: an evocative, creepy and slowly shifting fusion of modular electronic bleeps, vintage analogue synthesiser melodies, immersive chords and - for shortish blasts amongst the aural weightlessness - bubbling beats. To round off the album, the pair drifts further into deep space ambient mode via the Pete Namlook-esque 'Confluence'.

Review: A decade ago, legendary horror movie composer/director John Carpenter joined forces with son Cody and godson Daniel Davies to make Lost Themes, a collection of new musical compositions to "soundtrack the movies in your mind". It kick-started a prolific period of musical activity which included both real soundtracks and music made for imaginary ones. Lost Themes IV sits in the latter camp, with the trio delivering music inspired by the aesthetic of "noir" movies. While Carpenter senior's suspenseful, paired-down drum machine rhythms and clandestine synthesiser sounds are still present, they work in harmony with creepy effects, immersive sound effects and additional instrumentation. For proof, see the growling guitars on 'My name IS Death' and the exotic classical guitars and sitars of 'He Walks. By Night'.

Review: Dadawah aka. Lloyd Charmers was one of Jamaica's boldest and most resourceful record producers, testament to which was his standout LP Peace & Love. Originally released as an EP of just four tracks, drawing on the rhythmic hallmarks of the Nyabinghi gatherings of Rastafari, Charmers is heard commanding an ensemble cast of virtuosi, including Willie Lindo on guitar. With its multi-layered, weighty and patriotic breathtakers such as 'Zion Land' and 'Know How You Stand', which blow away with their adept command of space and reverb, the tracks now come backed a whopping 21 dub versions also produced by the man himself - 19 of which have never been before released on CD - the best of his dub output since the mid-1970s.

Review: AD 2022: Live In Manchester is the long overdue live album from seminal homegrown punk legends The Damned, who announced plans in 2020 to undertake a reunion tour with the original line up of Dave Vanian (vocals), Brian James (guitar), Captain Sensible (bass), and Rat Scabies (drums), but naturally had to put things on hold due to the pandemic. Finally making good on their promise and reuniting for the first time in over four decades to descend upon Manchester's O2 Apollo in November 2022 for an immense set of 21 tracks taken from the band's first two (and only) albums to ever feature the classic OG line up; Damned Damned Damned and Music For Pleasure, both initially released in 1977, feast your ears on a true fly-on-the-wall experience if you were one of the many miserable millions to not experience such an iconic rarity in person that night.

Review: While born in Jamaica, like many of the Windrush Generation Robert Thompson AKA Dandy made his name in the UK, subsequently making some of the earliest - and most successful - British Ska records with the assistance of Australian entrepreneur and Crossbow Records founder Millie Small. This fine compilation, one of the first to showcase the work of a UK-based ska star, tells the story of Thompson's work in 1964 and '65, much of it alongside fellow vocalist Keith Foster as Sugar N Dandy. There's much to enjoy throughout, with highlights including the organ solo-sporting delight of 'Oh Dear', the fuzzy jazziness of 'I'm Not Crying Now', the Mod-friendly 'Blues Got a Hold On Me' and his superb ska cover of Hermans Hermits' hit 'I'm Into Something Good'.

Review: Danielle Nicole shares her debut album on Forty Below: The Love You Bleed. From its earliest recording sessions, Nicole knew this one would be different; for the first time, the whole twelve-track repertoire is about falling in love, not the fallout of it. Produced by Tony Braunagel (Taj Mahal, Eric Burdon, Robert Cray) and mixed by John Porter (B.B. King, Buddy Guy, Bryan Ferry), The Love You Bleed is an album-length sentimental ballad; full of love, loss, will, determination, and every residual ingredient of love. But that's not to say the album doesn't get sour with it; while lead single 'Make Love' is about consciously pushing past pain - choosing love, family, and community in life's difficult moments - 'How Did We Get To Goodbye' hits the listener quicker with its raw and twinging lyrics, documenting a soured love that bears no hero or villain, and asking how one might reach such a place of disrepair without even knowing it.

Review: For the uninitiated, Robin Crutchfield was one of the key early figures in New York's infamous "no wave" music scene, first as part of influential band DNA and then as the leader of his own outfit, Dark Day. This essential three-CD set tells the story of the hard-to-pigeonhole outfit's original incarnation between 1979 and 1989, offering a chronological trip through the pitch-black corners of the unique combo's slim but perfectly formed catalogue. The Dark Day sound was undoubtedly unique, with Gary Numan-ish synth sounds and arty, stylised vocals being underpinned by heavy, loose-limbed rhythms provided by two drummers. The accompanying booklet tells the story of the band in decent detail, too, making it as much an introduction as a celebration.

Review: With 'Long Gradus', Sarah Davachi seizes the opportunity to take one idea and explore it from as many angles as possible. The celebrated composer and ambient artist is consistently investigating musical possibilities from a learned, authoritative perspective and so this latest project finds her expanding on an initial invitation to the Composer's Kitchen residency in the Netherlands. Fundamentally scored for a string quartet, Davachi's intention with the stirring, sustained tension of 'Long Gradus' was that it could be performed on a number of different instruments, and this expansive four-CD edition on her Late Music label presents the piece performed on woodwinds, brass and organ and choir and electronics alongside the fundamental string version.

Review: When Marie Davidson announced last year that she would be, "retiring from club music", many wondered what she'd do next. Renegade Breakdown, her first album recorded with a full band (L'Oeuil Nu), answers that question. It sees the Canadian artist and her new collaborators deliver suitably arresting, personal and ear-catching songs built on mixing and matching a surprisingly wide variety of musical inspirations, from Blondie, classic disco and mutilated heavy metal guitars, to Kraftwerk, Billie Holliday, Fleetwood Mac and Daft Punk. It's a big shift for the previously highly experimental artist, but thanks to her skill as both a a producer and performer, one that works magnificently well.

Review: To mark the one-year anniversary of Reveries, Sonic Cathedral drops a new two-tracker that brings a Detroit reimagining to 'Vale' and 'Cadere'. Produced by John Hanson, aka Saltbreaker, the project features live improvisations by saxophonists Yali Rivlin and Thalamus Morris and cellist Jordan Hamilton. Each of them did their thing in a single take with Hanson composing around their performances, and the result is a graceful blend of serene melancholy and rhythmic sophistication. Oodles of warmth and organic textured is added to the originals and these interpretations act as a fine tribute to Detroit's enduring uniqueness.

Predominantly made in collaboration with Black artists, it's an album that aims to chart the history of an entire art form a fresh perspective, evidently tracing the line of his own personal past-present at the same time.

Review: It would be fair to say that Melanie de Biasio may not be single-handedly keeping Belgium's jazz tradition alive, but she's certainly spearheading a revival of sorts. This third studio set arrives some four years on from her sophomore set, and 12 months after her most adventurous work to date, the 25-minute Blackened Cities. It's a largely upbeat and hugely atmospheric affair, mixing her usual Nina Simome style jazz workouts with drowsy, piano-laden torch songs, evocative accapella interludes and, in the case of the brilliant "Gold Junkies", dubbed-out, four-to-the-floor fusions of trip-hop and dark soul. Throughout, her superb voice provides a stunning focal point.

Review: The Grind Date is now two years strong so gets a customary Anniversary Edition that invites us to revel in the album's enduring impact on hip-hop. It features the iconic American trio's signature eclectic style which is of course to blend thought-provoking lyrics with laid-back beats. With standout tracks like 'Shopping Bags (She Got from You)' and the title cut, De La Soul's ability to remain relevant while experimenting with fresh sounds is very much laid bare. This edition includes remastered audio but with a sympathetic edge that retains the nicely undercooked sound of the oringal.

Review: Legendary US hip hop outfit De La Soul will always be most well known for their Three Feet High and Rising album but they penned plenty of others that are just as good. De La Soul Is Dead was the follow-up LP to that one and it saw them again work with Prince Paul on production duties. The daisy age themes of their debut remain but with more skilled rhyming flows. The record has plenty of standouts such as 'A Roller Skating Jam Named Saturday Night', 'Keepin the Faith' and 'Ring Ring Ring' which set a new standard for the next generation.

Review: There's a certain drama in the air when the beats kick in with an instant jolt of energy that doesn't let up. The tracks on the second album on Pete Burns-fronted crew are an exuberant mix of bold melodies and infectious rhythms, blending sharp pop with a cheeky edge. You'll know their massive SAW-produced SMASH 'You Spin Me Round (Like a Record)', but the group's unmistakable sense of theatre shines through, with each track feeling like a mini anthem. Whether it's the larger-than-life production or the slightly over-the-top flair, the sound remains unapologetically fun. It's pop at its most playful, wrapped in an unmistakable 80s glow that still carries weight today.

Review: Originally released way back in 1982, 35 Years From Alpha is a genuine rarity: a rare solo album from the late, great 'Deadly' Headley Bennett, one of reggae's most prolific saxophonists of the 70s and 80s. The album was produced by Adrian Sherwood, with Bennett being backed by a who's who of fine Jamaican musicians and On-U-Sound regulars. As this timely reissue proves, all involved did a terrific job providing a platform for the talented horns-man. For proof, check the ska-tinged dancefloor dub excellence of '35 Years From Alpha', the rootsy sweetness of 'Head Charge', the soulful dub-jazz weight of 'Little Dove' and the spaced-out, intergalactic dub wonder that is 'Independent Man (Horns Cut)'.

Review: It's somewhat surprising to hear that this is Kim Deal's debut solo album, what with fellow college rock and grunge legends of the late 80s and 90s - such as her former Pixies bandmate Black Francis, Sonic Youth and Dinosaur Jr. members - putting out solo albums like there's no tomorrow; Deal, who is a member of The Breeders, has held her band mentality for the most part. The arrival of this album with her as the star on the cover, however, is even more intriguing because of the wait. And the resulting material is as assured in its slacker cool feel and as anything she has put her name to in her career so far and full of weird and scuzzy sounds that make it a feast for the ears. Deal's great taste in production is part of her winning formula, with the likes of Josh Klinghoffer (former Red Hot Chilli Peppers), Raymond McGinley of Teenage Fanclub, Slint's Britt Walford and the late Steve Albini all credited on this astounding record.

Review: Deepspace's 'Neon Blue Utopia' is the 16th album from the Brisbane-based artist is a heady brew of ambient electronica, spacewave and post-rock, conjuring a dreamlike world like a cyberpunk film score filtered through a kaleidoscope. 'Utopia=Visions' sets the tone with its expansive soundscapes and shimmering textures, evoking a sense of awe and wonder. Tracks like 'Parkour on Lazarus Heights' and 'Rainy... Precinct' paint a vivid picture of this futuristic metropolis, with their pulsating rhythms and otherworldly sounds capturing the city's vibrant energy and neon-lit glow. 'Entering Aquarium Prefecture' and 'Bubble Echolalia District' delve into the surreal, their off-kilter rhythms and disorienting soundscapes suggesting a world where reality is fluid and dreams are tangible. The album's second half continues the exploration, venturing into darker and more experimental territories. 'Floor 426-B' and 'Empty Office Space' hint at the city's hidden depths and the lurking shadows beneath its gleaming facade. A proper journey through a world of sonic imagination, this is an immersive and evocative soundscape-fest.

Review: Def Leppard's One Night Only: Live at The Leadmill Sheffield captures the energy and intimacy of a rare club performance by the stadium fillers in their hometown. Recorded on May 19, 2023, the show took place in front of just under 900 fans, marking the smallest venue the band had played in the UK or Europe in over 35 years. Returning to their roots, the band performed a set packed with hits and deep cuts spanning their entire career, delivering an unforgettable experience. The setlist included iconic tracks like 'Bringin' On The Heartbreak', 'Hysteria' and 'Pour Some Sugar On Me', which had the crowd singing every word. The atmosphere of the venue, along with the band's tight performance, brought an incredible intensity that's rarely found in larger arenas. This 13-track DVD and CD package features the performance in all its raw brilliance, a celebration of their legacy. For those who couldn't attend, this release is a rare glimpse of Def Leppard in such an intimate setting. It highlights how, even after decades of success, the band continues to excel when stripped down to their essence.

Review: To mark what would have been Desmond Dekker's 80th birthday, Trojan Records is serving up a variety of celebratory releases. The King of Ska takes us back to the formative years of the Jamaican superstar's career between 1963-67, when he was an aspiring young singer signed to producer Leslie Kong's Beverley's Records imprint. Loosely chronologically arranged, disc one begins with Dekker's celebrated debut single, 'Honour Your Mother & Father', and continues to chart his efforts in the first couple of years of his career - both alongside unnamed studio bands and with the backing of The Cherry Pies and The Four Aces. On CD2, we hear a more confident Dekker belting out the singles that would turn him into an international star, including rude boy anthem - and his first UK top 50 smash - '007'.

Review: Over the course of her last few albums, Lana Del Ray has evolved into a significant chronicler of 21st century American life, with sharper-then-ever lyrics accompanied by fittingly haunting, downbeat and bittersweet musical arrangements. Blue Bannisters, which like so many albums released this year was written and recorded during lockdown, continues in a similar vein to its predecessors, with Del Ray's fragile, melancholic vocals being accompanied by ghostly synthesizer chords, striking piano motifs, drowsy aural textures, simmering strings, gentle guitars and occasional rhythmic nods to trip-hop. It's more bittersweet than intense, but undeniably a creative response to the most testing of times. Considered in those terms, it's a hugely impactful and entertaining album.

Review: There really is a tunnel under Ocean Boulevard. Not accessible to the public, it was allegedly originally built way back in the interwar period to provide easy access between an oil company's HQ and an amusement park. Such a grisly and suggestive origin myth is the epitome of Lana Del Rey's latest chart-topping album, which is named after the very same tunnel. Much like the underhanded links between the entertainment industry and dirty money alluded to in the title, Del Rey has mastered her sound here: an affective rumination on love, loneliness, and of course, loss, appealing to both ironic zoomers and nostalgia-trippers alike.

Review: Lana Del Rey is back with a title that promises to intrigue, 'Did You Know That There's A Tunnel Under Ocean Blvd?"' If her previous works are any indication, we can expect a hauntingly nostalgic exploration of life in California, where the artist grew up. With her velvety voice and dejectedly poetic lyrics, Del Rey has made a name for herself as a modern-day bard of the West Coast. This release is sure to add another chapter to her musical saga, charting three new songs and one remix, and collaborations across the pop spectrum including Father John Misty, Tommy Genesis and Jon Batiste.

Review: Despite the production being beset with problems - not least the theft of her laptop, which contained all of the demo versions of the songs - Lana Del Rey's ninth studio album has been widely praised by critics, with many claiming that it's her most mature and fully-realised set to date. It's certainly an impressive set of songs, with the American artist's usual cinematic sound being expanded via nods to Americana, gospel, trap and string-laden folk. In her words, it's self-consciously 'spiritual' in tone, with Del Rey's delivery of her lyrics - notably more thoughtful and weightier than some of her previous work - being particularly impressive. This Japanese edition boasts an Obi-strip and slightly tweaked artwork.

Review: Since breaking through 11 years ago, Portland, Oregon combo The Delines have crafted an attractive trademark 'country soul' sound that combines the lilting, desert drive heartache of Americana - an effect heightened by the southern drawl of singer Amy Boone - with Stax-style hazy horns, elongated Hammond organ chords, and warming grooves. It's a sound that can be as easily applied to downtempo numbers as more upbeat ones, with the widespread use of strings and less fashionable brass and woodwind instruments (flugelhorn anyone?). The band's latest full-length excursion may well be their most hard hitting, heart breaking and poignant set yet, with a polished take on their distinctive style only emphasising the quality of their musicality and Boone's expressive lead vocals.

Review: Mac Demarco has a certain cachet as a happy-go-lucky slacker, with campfire atmosphere to spare and chorus pedals set to stun, somewhat in the manner of a millennial Cat Stevens. The songs on 'This Old Dog' go way beyond - focusing on his relationships with family and friends, they're in equal parts mature, affecting and memorable in their melodic sleight-of-hand. Certainly the lazy charm and laid-back goofiness are present and correct here, but 'This Old Dog' displays a genuine reflective depth and emotional resonance.

Discs one and two feature what appears to be an almost complete 1998 concert featuring such perennial favourites as 'Policy of Truth', 'Personal Jesus', 'It's No Good' and 'Just Can't Get Enough' (a triumphant, sing-along conclusion all told), while CD three offers up 11 songs from a set recorded in 2005. The other three discs feature recordings of solo outings from Dave Gahan, with big Depeche Mode hits being joined by personal favourites and deep cuts from the Basildon Band's 40-plus year career.

Review: Originally formed in New York City in 1973, The Dictators are about as proto-punk as you can get, almost rubbing shoulders with the seminal sonic groundwork laid by The Stooges (only with almost none of the praise shared). Their 1975 debut full-length Go Girl Crazy! would be distributed by Empire before the band would be dropped, only to see their vision co-opted just a few years later by the burgeoning punk scene they'd been just a tad too early for, ultimately dissolving into the annals of proto-punk history. Now over a literal half-century since first reforming, The Dictators return with a self-titled ten-track slab of fuzzy, anthemic goodness featuring original members Andy Shernoff and Ross "The Boss" Friedman, emboldened by the tongue-in-cheek, all too self-aware lead single 'Let's Get The Band Back Together'. With some members sadly lost to illness, what better time to throw agism out the window and remind all where the riffs, snarl and swagger originate from?!

Review: DIIV's fourth album, Frog in Boiling Water, is a haunting yet mesmerizing testament to the band's resilience and creativity. Produced by Chris Coady, the album emerges after a tumultuous four-year journey that nearly tore the band apart. Drawing inspiration from Daniel Quinn's The Story of B, the album explores themes of societal collapse under end-stage capitalism, symbolized by the metaphor of the boiling frog. The lead single, Brown Paper Bag, sets the tone with its intersection of dream-pop and post-rock, capturing the band's blend of dejection and angst. Throughout the album's ten tracks, DIIV navigate a musical landscape that balances rhythms built from breakbeats with ethereal guitars and vocals. Despite facing internal conflicts and external pressures, DIIV's commitment to creating meaningful art shines through on Frog in Boiling Water. Each song reflects the band's collective struggle and resilience, offering a poignant commentary on the precarious state of the world. While the album's creation was fraught with challenges, including personal struggles and creative differences, DIIV emerges stronger than ever. Frog in Boiling Water is a testament to the band's ability to confront adversity head-on and channel their experiences into music that is both introspective and evocative. With its haunting melodies and introspective lyrics, Frog in Boiling Water is a special addition to DIIV's discography, showing the band's evolution and maturation as artists.

Review: As any fans of smoochy neo-soul will know, Dinner Party is something of a super group. It is made up of the masterful contemporary talents of Kamasi Washington, Robert Glasper, Terrace Martin, and 9th Wonder and is like a modern answer to the Soul Aquarians back in the neo-soul heyday. This is a CD version of their Enigmatic Society album which is a deeper, warmer work than their self-titled earlier work. Jazz and hip-hop and some great samples all get fused into sublime sounds for late night grooving and smooching and make it another essential outing from these musical powerhouses.

Review: Few albums capture an era like Dire Straits' fifth album Brothers In Arms. Originally released in 1985, the album fused Mark Knopfler's understated songwriting with polished, atmospheric production, creating a landmark in both rock and the then-nascent CD format. Now, with its 40th anniversary triple CD deluxe edition, Brothers In Arms feels fresher and more essential than ever. Disc one has the original album, remastered to highlight the warmth of Knopfler's intricate guitar work and the spacious soundscapes. 'Money for Nothing' and 'Walk of Life' remain radio staples, but deeper cuts like 'Ride Across the River' and 'Why Worry' show the band's subtle craftsmanship. The real revelation is the newly unearthed Live in '85 concert (discs two and three), recorded in San Antonio during their mammoth tour. The energy is palpable; songs stretch out, Knopfler's guitar finding new corners of emotion and tension. Unlike the studio's smoothness, the live show pulses with raw vitality. Housed in handsome digi-sleeve packaging, complete with a detailed 28-page booklet featuring fresh interviews, this reissue honors both the intimacy and grandeur that made Brothers In Arms a phenomenon. It's a perfect way to revisit i or discover i an album that still resonates across generations.

Love Changes Everything I
Love Changes Everything II
Love Changes Everything III
Love Changes Everything IV
Love Changes Everything V
Love Changes Everything VI
Review: Dirty Three's first full-length since 2012 is a strong trip through six cinematic movements.Love Changes Everything is a windswept trek through arid deserts and moonlit forests, a contemplation of love that blends melancholy jazz, ambient folk, and tender post-rock. The trio, comprising Warren Ellis, Mick Turner and Jim White, has a knack for producing instrumental music that defies categorization. White's drumming is as textural and unfastened as ever, Turner's riffs hum with punk ferocity and raw Americana, while Ellis's strings, piano, and synths provide a widescreen theatricality. The album opens with Turner's disfigured twangs and Ellis's soaring strings, gradually building to a militaristic thump. Tracks like 'II' and 'III' offer slow-motion piano melodies and spectral strings, creating visuals of spectral faces and oily vapors. Love Changes Everything unfolds like a film, with moments of fiery discordance and serene contemplation. Ellis's fiddle on 'V' and the tempestuous conclusion on 'VI' exemplify their dynamic range. This album is a sublime addition to their catalogue because of their matured, exploratory sound.

Review: Dislocation Dance come straight out of the traps with the opener 'I Just Need A Friend'. It takes Parliament-esque funk into the 21st century and is an injection of sheer joy. Trumpeter Andy Diagram earns his keep with his stunning playing on 'Sugar Coated', while 'We All Need Love' and 'Really Should Know Better' transport you to sunny climes. 'Sugar Coated' sounds like Beirut thanks to the trumpet-tinged sparseness and tender, intimate vocal performance. And 'Can't Come Back' mixes jangle pop with electronica to great effect. It's truly great to see the return of Dislocation Dance as they have great credentials, having released some of their early material on Rough Trade and the first punk indie label, Buzzcocks' New Hormones.

Review: .While Brazilian guitarist Fabiano Do Nascimento and American saxophonist Sam Gendel first met and played together at the dawn of the last decade - at a Los Angeles cafe both used to frequent, fact fans - it was only last year that they decided to collaborate on a release. The Room, the resultant album, was reportedly recorded in two days in a studio in the Californian countryside. It's an undeniably magical and sun-soaked affair, with Gendel teasing fluttering, flute-esque improvisations from his soprano saxophone while Do Nascimento delivers impeccable, finger-picking meditations on his seven-string acoustic guitar. The latter is undoubtedly a virtuoso with his own distinct style - a Brazilian take on classical guitar, incorporating nods to lesser-known regional music - but instinctively knows when to step back and allow Gendel the limelight. Impressive stuff all told.

Raised in Tampa, she first gained attention with the viral hit 'Yucky Blucky Fruitcake' before signing with Top Dawg Entertainment in 2022. The mixtape's title and cover, with Doechii holding an albino alligator, nod to her "Swamp Princess" nickname and symbolize resilience" as she explained, "This mixtape is my riposte. Doechii confronts industry pressures, sobriety, and self-worth with sharp lyricism and stylistic versatility, over standouts like 'Denial Is A River' and 'Boom Bap'.

Review: In his recent book Major Labels, a history of popular music in seven genres, Kelefa Sanneh argues that pop is now so free of defined boundaries that's it's "barely a genre at all". Listening to LA rapper, singer and producer Doja Cat's third album, it's hard to disagree. Polished, professional and ear-catching, Planet Her is a hugely enjoyable romp whose hybrid, kaleidoscopic constructions variously synthesize elements of R&B, synth0heavy Afro-pop, dancehall, hip-hop, hyperpop, trap, 21st century bass music and much more besides. Throw in guest spots from the likes of Young Thug, Ariana Grande and JD, and you have an on-point pop album that will resonate far longer than most similarly framed sets.

Scarlet, her fourth album, is a direct reaction to criticism of her rapping and the pop-leaning nature of her later work. So while she does sing at times, it's her sassy, confident and dextrous verses - alongside beats and basslines rooted in r&b and hip-hop, with plenty of high-profile sample flipping thrown in (see recent single 'Paint The Town Red', which utilises elements of Dione Warwick classic 'Walk On By'). The results are undoubtedly remarkable and -in her words - "masculine", with highlights including the strutting and insanely weighty 'Demons' (whose lyrics are a direct attack on critics and misogynistic male rappers), the Rotary Connection-goes-r&b shuffle of 'Attention' and the deep, head-nodding wooziness of 'Balut'.

Review: This concept album is a sonic odyssey into the depths of an acid trip, capturing a multitude of states of consciousness and profound internal emotions. It's a rich experience, best appreciated in different mind states and with full presence. The album is rooted in psychedelic/space tock and Krautrock, with touches of psych folk and electronic elements. It features acoustic guitar, delicate flute, harp-like instruments, bells, and assorted percussion, creating a lush and textured soundscape. The music is mostly instrumental, peppered with occasional vocals and spoken word, reminiscent of early Pink Floyd, Tangerine Dream and Popol Vuh. The standout track 'Silence' exemplifies the album's excellence, though all tracks are commendable. The album delivers a dark, atmospheric, and hypnotic sound. Percussion, flute, organ, guitars, and early electronics create proto-industrial sound collages that captivate the listener. DOM, consisting of Gabor and Laszlo Baksay, Rainer Puzalowski, and Hans-Georg Stopka, evolved from the beat/psychedelic band Set Mind. Regulars at Dusseldorf's underground clubs like Creamcheese, they shared the stage with early Kraftwerk and Can, cementing their place in the Krautrock pantheon. This mostly looked over album is a great find for those into progressive rock music.

Review: While never lauded by the jazz establishment, enthusiastic fans of the style have long claimed that Kenny Dorham was one of the finest trumpeters of his generation - not to mention one of the true greats of the bebop era. He worked with all the greats and mentored Joe Henderson, who made one of his compositions, 'Blue Bossa', a bossa-jazz classic. This album showcases for the first time a near legendary concert performed by Dorham, alongside an all-star band, at the Blue Morocco Club in the Bronx, way back in 1967. It's an electrifying performance all told, with his interpretations of Miles Davis's 'the Theme', Charlie Parker's 'Confirmation', Milt Jackson's ' Bag's Groove' (here spun out to near 15 minutes) and his own 'Blue Bossa' standing out.

Review: With Jimi Goodwin having retired from touring duties, this album takes on a whole new level of significance as it brings to question whether this album marks the end of the road for them as a unit. We certainly hope that it's just the beginning of a new era as they sound at the top of their game and reassert their reputation as one of the best British bands. The achingly beautiful 'Renegade' is right up there with their Lost Souls era and featured some stunning lyrics that tug at the heart strings: "As you walk out the door / Then your walking out, you're out forever." Meanwhile, 'Cold Dreaming' has an epic feel to it and is Leeds indie sorts The Music-esque - it's lush and orchestral with an epic chorus melody that will have you punching the air triumphantly. One to crank up on the car stereo and wind down the windows for definitely.

Review: Malcolm John Rebennack, Jr., better known as Dr. John, left an indelible mark on the music world with his unique blend of New Orleans R&B, blues, jazz, funk and rock. As a teenage prodigy, he cut his teeth as a songwriter, arranger, and producer for Ace Records before becoming a sought-after studio musician in Los Angeles during the 1960s. His debut album Gris Gris in 1968 catapulted him into the spotlight as Dr. John The Night Tripper, captivating audiences with its mystical allure. Hits like 'Iko Iko' and 'Right Place Wrong Time' solidified his place in music history, earning him six Grammy awards and induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Now, Gris Gris Gumbo Ya Ya: Singles 1968-1974 collects his early singles from his influential years with Atco/Atlantic, offering 26 tracks of pure musical medicine. The iconic 'Such A Night,' alone makes this compilation is essential for both seasoned fans and newcomers alike. With liner notes from Gene Sculatti, it serves as a perfect entry point into the timeless world of Dr. John's music and a nostalgic journey through his classic Atco/Atlantic albums.

Review: This is a completely new project the mighty Dr Robert of sophisti-pop hitmakers The Blow Monkeys fame and British folk icon Matt Deighton (Mother Earth, Bill Fay, Paul Weller). The single and title track is a banger: T-Rex-esque glam interlaces beautifull with an earthy acoustic guitar bedding on the catchy number. Elsewhere, things get more pastoral and psychedelic on the hypnotic 'Dude In A Roller'. The record is billed as a duo and sonically doesn't try to sound like anything more than that, which is refreshing in a world of endless layers. It's sometimes about knowing what to take away than what to add to a mix and Dr. Robert and Matt Deighton seem to know this. A truly stellar songwriting partnership that we hope is the beginning of much more to come.

Review: This demo sessions album is a real rarity - so if you were one of few to bag a copy first time round, you likely earned some jealous looks from fans. But since it's earned cult status as a jewel in their oeuvre through word of mouth, America's answer to Slowdive caved to popular opinion and made it more accessible with this first ever remaster job. This album takes it back to where it all began. Before signing to Caroline Records, Boston-based shoegazers took a leaf out of the punk DIY handbook and handed out this collection on cassette at gigs around London and posted it to labels. 4AD picked up on it and handed the cassette to the Melody Maker, where critics swooned and sparked a feeding frenzy for their signature. And for good reason: despite being less produced than their albums proper, the muddier mixes have a murky, hypnotic edge. Of the songs here 'Song For J.J.' is exhilarating with its unsettling, apocalyptic atmosphere. And 'Daymom' is the audio equivalent to being stood on a windswept Arctic tundra - dark, desolate beauty to its core. Many bands will come and do their best Drop Nineteens impression with the nu-gaze movement in full swing, but the 'Teens had something really special that can't be repeated.

Review: The Dub Syndicate's later albums, rounding off their earlier box set, showcase the band's evolution in the late 1980s and 90s, marking their rise to prominence. With Style Scott stepping into the spotlight as bandleader and co-producer, the group's sound transformed, blending classic Jamaican musicianship with Adrian Sherwood's signature UK studio experimentation. This fusion created a series of albums that appealed to both ravers and dreads, combining dub's roots with experimental sounds. Included are: Strike The Balance (1989), followed by Stoned Immaculate (1991), Echomania (1993) and Ital Breakfast (1996), each album further refining the band's distinctive urban dub sound. The bonus album, Obscured By Version (2025), serves as a special treat, offering fresh versions of rhythms from this era. The Dub Syndicate remain legends in the genre, known for their bold use of sampling and raw, immersive dub that has influenced generations of listeners. This collection highlights their critical role in shaping the dub sound, cementing their place in music history.
