Review: Mad Season's singular studio effort weaves between raw grunge and introspective melancholy, a haunting exploration of the 90s alt-rock sound. Anchored by the emotive vocals of Layne Staley and the blistering guitar work of Mike McCready, the record captures a mood of somber reflection and hard-hitting release. Tracks like 'River of Deceit' pulse with dark, brooding energy, its aching delivery underscored by a gritty groove, while 'I Don't Know Anything' shifts between quiet introspection and explosive moments of intensity, embodying the turmoil of self-doubt. With Mark Lanegan's gravelly vocals adding an extra layer of depth, the album merges pained ballads with cathartic rock, evoking a sense of both isolation and raw emotion. Across the tracklist, the combination of delicate and forceful moments paints a portrait of a band fully immersed in their emotional landscape.

Review: Originally, a landmark album in underground rap and a standout collaboration has since become a cornerstone of the genre. The album's chaotic, sample-driven production and intricate, stream-of-consciousness rhymes create a unique album that has grown in accolades as the years have gone on. The beats, blend jazz, experimental hip-hop and underground sensibilities, making tracks like 'Sickfit' and 'Do Not Fire!' stand out. DOOM's lyricism shines through, with brilliant flows and rhymes that elevate tracks like 'Money Folder' and 'Figaro' into hip-hop classics. The album's vibe is defiantly playful, with weed references and quirky samples, but it's the chemistry between Madlib's unconventional beats and DOOM's meticulous wordplay that sets this album apart. Despite leaks and delays, this record remains one of the genre's most influential works, showcasing both artists at their peak.

Review: Cliff Martinez's soundtrack is a full realised musical world that is defined by eerie synths and pulsating rhythms, all of which perfectly capture The Neon Demon hypnotic and unsettling atmosphere. Martinez is well known for his work on Drive and Only God Forgives and here once more delivers a score that is both haunting and seductive while mirroring the neon-lit world of fashion and obsession. The soundtrack weaves dreamy, ambient textures with dark, throbbing electronic undercurrents that draw you in and highlights include 'Neon Demon' and 'Mine' which pulse with icy beauty and mean this one stands as one of Martinez's most evocative and chilling compositions.

Review: 1969 was the year of release of this one and only album by Japanese jazz pianist Hideo Ichikawa, vibraphonist Hiroshi Matsumoto, bassist Kunimitsu Inaba and drummer Motohiko Hino, all in collaboration. A one-off coming-together, it centred on the valerian vibes of Matsumoto, whose star instrument, the vibraphone, was bound to take centre stage for its comparative novelty, not to mention the fact that Matsumoto himself had been practicing before the others. An honorary work, this urbane masterpiece hears tasteful vibraphonic panning in full stereo, as blue passing notes collide with expert steel brushings and untied chord playing, resulting in a unique but salubrious listen.

Review: This extended triple vinyl edition of Batztoutai with Memorial Gadgets revives Merzbow's groundbreaking second vinyl release from 1986 in an all-new and special package. Widely regarded as one of the Japanese master's finest albums, this is its first-ever reissue on vinyl and the first release featuring the original recordings. The 1986 RRRec edition was a remix by the label, whereas this version presents the original tracks but also it includes bonus material from the same era to offer a definitive and immersive look at Merzbow's early work. Noise and experimental music fans, do not sniff at this one.

Review: Swedish progressive groove metal legends and djent pioneers Meshuggah have always been in competition with themselves, nearly eclipsing all prior output with 2022's ninth full-length Immutable; a near 70-minute beastly display of ludicrously technical, poly rhythmic mayhem that served as both their lengthiest work to date as well as one of their most critically acclaimed, combining the unhinged aggression of 2008's ObZen with the post-prog hypnotism of their 2002 fan-favourite Nothing. The Indelible Edition offers a unique sonic enhancement and total remaster, redefining the album's depth and clarity, while including three bonus live tracks captured over the course of their 2023/2024 world tours. A very on-brand reissue from a collective known for their painstakingly detailed commitment to their vision and craft, whether you prefer the term "indelible" or "definitive", this is the version of Immutable the band finally appear content with sharing with their fanbase almost three years after initial release, almost like the Kanye West of progressive metal but without all of the antisemitism. Complete with updated artwork and gold foil intricacies for the aesthetically minded fanbase.

Review: Method Man's debut studio album dropped back in November 1994 on the cult Def Jam Recordings. It marked his first solo effort following Wu-Tang Clan's iconic Enter the Wu-Tang (36 Chambers) debut. The record introduced Method Man's gritty style and lyrical prowess to a wider audience. and Tical (The Bonus Joints) now comes on limited gatefold silver vinyl and complements the original release featuring B-sides and rare tracks from the deluxe edition's second disc. It's a deeper insight into his early artistry for fans old and new and underscores Method Man's influential role in shaping the Wu-Tang legacy and solidifying his own status as a standout solo artist.

Review: This second posthumous album from the late Mac Miller dropped in 2018 after being recorded but never released back in 2014. In some ways, it joins the dots between his early career style - an earnest rapper with plenty of attitude - and the more thoughtful songwriter he became in later life. There is still plenty of sadness and melancholy hidden between the beats and amongst the lines of these tunes which are built on keys, drums and bass with only the subtlest of production tweaks. 'Do You Have A Destination?' is a richly layered sound with fragment vocals, 'Stoned' is woozy and deep with gorgeous guitar licks, 'Funny Papers' showcases Mac's unique vocal stylings over more trad beats and 'Manakins' is another smudged late night sound with a heartfelt undertone.

Review: ***B-STOCK: Sleeve damaged but otherwise in excellent condition***

Charles Mingus' The Clown gets a reissue as part of Atlantic's 75 Historic Reissue Series. The Clown was Mingus' second consecutive masterpiece, featuring Jean Shepherd narrating the titular track about a clown striving to please. It introduced two of Mingus' finest compositions: the vigorous 'Haitian Fight Song' and the nostalgic 'Reincarnation of a Lovebird,' a tribute to Charlie Parker. Mingus' genius shines through in his focused yet flexible arrangements, balancing freedom and structure. The title track's improvisations, led by trombonist Jimmy Knepper, showcase Mingus' evolving modern compositional style with dissonance, tempo changes and intricate sections. This reissue beautifully captures the album's storytelling essence and musical sophistication.

Review: Hudson Mohawke has always been a bit of a universe-builder, sonically speaking. Few dance music producers to emerge in the post-millennium period have created such a unique aural personality and carved out such an individual place for themselves. Despite giving us a number of incredible pieces of work over the years, Cry Sugar was in many ways the Scottish enigma's coming of age moment. Simultaneously smashing out hardcore, slomo UK breaks, weird-hop, freak&B, alternative-leaning EDM pop, soul, jazz, festival chart house, electronic sleaze and hyper emotional electronica overtures, the 2022 record was rightly tipped as one of the year's finest. And the perfect score to the tumultuous, chaotic and confusing times we woke up in at the time this one was being meticulously pieced together.

Review: Megan Moroney expands on her critically acclaimed sophomore album with this deluxe edition, offering a deeper dive into her introspective and relatable songwriting. Originally released earlier this year, the album resonated with listeners for its honest portrayal of heartbreak, resilience, and the complexities of relationships. This deluxe edition adds three new tracks to the mix, showcasing Moroney's signature blend of country storytelling and pop sensibility. 'Break It Right Back' is a catchy anthem of empowerment, while 'Bless Your Heart' delivers a Southern-fried dose of sass and wit, while the closing track, 'I'll Be Fine', offers a poignant reflection on moving on and finding strength in vulnerability. With this deluxe edition, Moroney solidifies her position as a rising force in country music, her songwriting striking a chord with listeners who appreciate honesty, vulnerability and a healthy dose of Southern charm.

Review: The iconic bounty hunter returns with a soundtrack as unforgettable as the character himself. This edition combines the original eight-cue program, originally released by RCA Records alongside music from the series' first film, with the complete film score in mono, all meticulously remastered by Claudio Fuiano and Daniel Winkler. The vibrant packaging includes front cover art by Renato Casaro and a portrait of Morricone by Fuiano. The vinyl version is pressed on transparent white and orange wax, housed in a striking gatefold sleeve. Often overshadowed by its predecessor and successor, this film features a compelling narrative combined with Morricone's masterful composition. The score has pre-written themes, including a haunting motif tied to a musical pocket watch, seamlessly woven into the storyline. Popular in its era, the music inspired covers by Hugo Montenegro and Billy Strange, further cementing its place in cinematic history.

Review: Fourth Wave's latest compilation feels like a musical postcard from Japan's vibrant underground, gliding through genres with effortless charm. Mari Nakamoto's 'Day Dreaming' sets a tranquil mood with her airy vocals drifting over soft, dreamy instrumentals. Yudai Suzuki's 'Midnight Calling' brings smoky sax riffs and laid-back grooves, perfect for late-night introspection. Yasuhiro Abe's 'Night Fish' dives into psychedelic waters, swirling with hypnotic melodies and unpredictable rhythms. Maki Asakawa's 'Kohi Hitotsu' radiates raw emotion, her voice rich with longing. Yuji Ozeki's 'Futaribun No Yume' blends traditional Japanese sounds with modern electronics, crafting a sound both timeless and futuristic. Jin Kirigaya's 'Matenro Monogatari' closes the collection with cinematic depth, its sweeping arrangement lingering long after the final note.

Review: Recorded at the storied Slugs' Saloon in Manhattan's Lower East Side, this unified collection captures the Charles Tolliver-led Music Inc quartet in blistering form. New York runs through the musiciits restlessness, density, sharp corners. Tolliver, a Brooklyn-born trumpeter with a militant edge and lyrical touch, fronts a group that helped define the forward-looking jazz of the early 70s. Beside him are Strata-East co-founder Stanley Cowell on piano, bassist Cecil McBee and drummer Jimmy Hopps, all embedded in the New York avant-garde at the time. On pieces like 'Felicite' and 'Wilpan's', they stretch out with blistering force, melting structure into raw, insistent groove. Even in quieter momentsi'Ruthie's Heart', or the shadowy 'Repetition'ithere's a tension that never quite releases, the sense that every note is carved in real time. This is the first time both volumes are presented as one continuous document, expanded with three previously unreleased tracks. It's a vital capture of a quartet thinking collectively, improvising with unrelenting intensity and total mutual trust. The sound, newly remastered, gives space to the grit and nuance of the live sessioniCowell's cascading runs, McBee's deep pull, Hopps' unpredictable propulsion. There's no studio polish here, just a direct line to the spirit of a time and place, when New York jazz burned fast, political and free.

Review: It's been a long time since Halo: Combat Evolved revolutionised the word of first-person shooter video games. Graphically superior to anything that had come before it, the franchise also benefits from a spectacularly gripping storyline in which humans are outgunned and out-teched by a ruthless and uncompromising alliance of superiorly equipped alien races united as The Covenant. The titular Halo adds a kind of Prometheus air of uncertainty, as nobody really knows what it does until attempts to activate the galaxy-destroying weapon reveal something worse than death - a parasitic breed called the Flood. If all that was enough to blow everyone away in 2001, 2004 brought us to a whole new level of immersion in this future scape. Just like its predecessor, a big part of the impact was the visionary score by gaming soundtrack masters Martin O'Donnell and Michael Savatori. Now here it is in all its Gregorian chanting glory.

Review: Laced Records and Halo Studios partner up to bring the epic soundtracks of the original Halo trilogy to vinyl for the first time, remastering and revamping 83 original scores from Halo: Combat Evolved, Halo 2, and Halo 3. the music that defined a franchise is thus ethered in perpetuity. Weaving orchestral elements, prog rock, drum corps marches, and heavy metal, Halo presents a perfect bottling of angst and militancy; owing to its popularity with a certain teen gamer cohort, Halo 2's score especially made history as the first video game OST to chart on the Billboard 200. Now, each soundtrack is presented in its own sleeve with custom artwork, and comes in a collector's box adorned with a debossed Halo logo and silver laminate finish.

Notes: With Time | The Roger Miret Archives

"Agnostic Front was a product of one of the most notorious and dangerous times of New York City history. The band captured those times sonically and visually. An image and sound that could have only risen from the grimy streets of old New York City. A time when the struggle fuelled incredible branches of creativity not only sonically but mainly within the underground wave of Artist clashing with Punks evolving into an inspirational era fuelled by the New York City Punk boom that bridged and reached the world in many inspirational ways."

"These are some of my archives that I have cherished my whole life. A time capsule of an era where life presented the darkest days of my life with light at the other end of the tunnel and that light was ambient even though it all seemed in black and white there was that one colourful rose rising from the concrete grime of the New York City streets. That colourful rose was my life, my soul growing and reaching my maximum being and my purpose and path in life."
