Decadubs 5 EP
Decadubs 5 EP (double 12")
Cat: HDB 088. Rel: 03 Dec 14

Burial - "Lambeth"
Kode9 - "Oh"
Cooly G - "Love Again"
DVA - "Monophonic Nightmare"
Martyn - "Mega Drive Generation" (Dorian Concept remix)
Cooly G - "Him Da Biz"
Funkystepz - "Vice Versa"
Review: Of all the Decadubs double packs issued as part of Hyperdub's exhaustive 10th Anniversary celebrations it's probably this fifth and final edition most label fans have been waiting for. Why's that? Because it offers you the chance to grip the hallowed Burial production "Lambeth" in your hands, one of a clutch of unreleased tracks from the reclusive producer that have been racking up plays on Youtube for some five years in one form or another. However there's plenty more to sink the teeth of your stylus needle into here, with the label's stated focus on a "celebration of house, garage and techno" resulting in some fine dancefloor moves from Kode9, DVA, Cooly G and a blinding Dorian Concept refix of Martyn.

Hold Me
Oi Dirty (feat Scratcha DVA)
Molly
Review: With the dust long since settled from her Playin' Me album, Cooly G is back in action on Hyperdub with a trio of fresh ideas that show off her evolution as an artist to be reckoned with. Lead track "Hold Me" builds on the atmospheric slant that pervaded G's LP and fills the enchanting space with a lean but purposeful UKF throwdown that rises into psychedelic peaks and melts back down into an especially alluring groove. Old sparring partner Scratcha DVA is back in the mix on "Oi Dirty", as the pair take a loping drum workout and have some fun flinging kitchen sink-esque noises about the room with abandon. "Molly" rounds things off with a focused club track that packs in dubby chords, robotic whirrings and an all-round techno intent that shows a lady in full control of her club-based tendencies.

Trippin B (3:32)
Booboo (4:07)
Flange City (3:46)
Waybay (feat Marc Perrineau) (5:11)
Horrors In The Dance (4:36)
Review: UK house-broken beat star Cooly G has been off our radars for our while, but here she is again on Hyperdub, home to her productions since day one. She returns with five floor shakers but the opener, "Trippin B", cannot be beaten purely on the basis of the absolutely killer bassline that is carries - potentially this week's pick form us. However, "Booboo", although not as instantly alluring, is a fine house banger with plenty of percussive trickery and oddball vocal samples, while the flip is dominated by the flanging synths of "Flange City", "Waybay's" tropical groove, and the breaks and twists of "Horrors In The Dance". Aside from "Love Dub", this might well be one of her finest moments. Sick.

Kode9 - "Pink Sham Pain Down The Drain"
The Bug - "Siren"
Dean Blunt - "Urban"
Cooly G - "Mind"
Inga Copeland - "I Am Your Ambient Wife"
Lee Gamble - "DSM"
Fatima Al Qadiri - "Shanxi"
Ikonika - "Time/Speed"
DJ Earl - "Hexagonic Sound"
DVA - "Reach The Devil"
Jeremy Greenspoon & Borys - "Gage"
Review: Take a look at the artists to grace the A-side of Decadubs 4 and you'll find a collection of names that have released some of this year's most talked about albums: Lee Gamble, Inga Copeland, The Bug and Fatima Al Qadiri. The B-side, however, hosts Hyperdub regulars like Ikonika and DVA, and the boss Kode9 of course, to more intriguing names like footworker DJ Earl and Jeremy Greenspoon & Borys who have previously released music on Dan Snaith's Jiaolong label. Dean Blunt also appears with a jazzy ambient cut, while Cooly G does the same with the sombre, vocal-driven "Mind".

Terror Danjah - "Glide"
Terror Danjah & Champion - "Stone Island"
Champion - "Bowser's Castle"
Terror Danjah & Champion - "Explode"
Review: It's grime o'clock at Hyperdub HQ as Terror Danjah and Champion square-off with some midrange baiting badness as cheeky and rude as you would expect from two masters of the art. Danjah's "Glide" actually struts on a peppy 4/4 rhythm, but the synths keep things dutty whilst there are plenty of quirks stitched into the beat. Champion's template on "Bowser's Castle" is broader, with fulsome melodies and a dextrous switch between ring modulating bassline throw downs and glossy synth refrains. In both instances the collaborations between the two bring a more hectic style full of clattering percussion and urgent tempos, clearly fed on the energy of shared studio time.

Review: Cooly G seems to be maturing with age. Or, at least, that's the impression given by sophomore set Wait 'Til Night, which eschews the alluring heaviness of her club-friendly singles in favour of a seductive, atmospheric, late night brew variously influenced by R&B, lo-fi electronica, space pop, hip-hop, dubstep and simmering synth-scapes. While some of the songs are charged with intense sexual desire - Hyperdub's PR outfit has aptly described it as "lo-fi bedroom music" - it's not all come-to-bed-eyes and seductive moves. In fact, many of the album's more potent moments deal with destructive relationships, the loss of love and the complex interplay between the sexes. As a result, Wait 'Til Night is as poignant as it is flirtatious.
