Review: Greg Foat is something of a musical polymath, with his various solo and collaborative albums touching on everything from spiritual jazz, library music and soundtrack sounds, to Balearic beats, jazz-funk and deep house. On Psychosynthesis, his first solo set for two years, he largely keeps things warm, chilled and dreamy, joining the dots between horizontal jazz-funk, exotica, Balearica, and sensuous sun-down sounds with the aid of a vast battery of analogue and modular synthesizers. The results are predictably impressive, with the album's many highlights including the spacey, slo-mo shuffle of 'Underwater Fantasy', the throbbing, Sun Palace-esque starry jazz-funk of 'Psychosynthesis (Part 1)', the gaseous ambient drift of 'The Green Odyssey' and the Wally Badarou style warmth of 'The Investigation'.

Review: The Fish Factory Sessions is a captivating live studio recording from the dynamic pairing of Greg Foat and Gig Masin. It features two brand-new compositions and two reimagined versions of tracks from their previous album, Dolphin. It was recorded at the namesake Fish Factory Studios in London with Moses Boyd on drums and Tom Herbert on bass. The four pieces are lavish and expansive with free-flowing sax melodies and tingling keys that bring to mind sun reflecting off glistering Mediterranean waters. It's happy, sombre, and beautiful, often all at once.

Review: French artist Folamour is no stranger to dropping albums despite the format growing ever less important in the modern era of dance music. Movement Therapy is his seventh and a bright love letter to the world that blends house, disco, funk and soul into a euphoric, dreamy journey full of summery joyousness. Following his acclaimed 2024 single 'Pressure Makes Diamonds,' Folamour explores themes of light, connection, and freedom with a catchy pop sheen that captures the uplifting power of human connection and the dancefloor's unifying spirit. Highlights include 'Easy To Love,' a spiritual, ethereal house track featuring Kabusa Oriental Choir, and the hopeful anthem 'Ca Va Aller' with its effortlessly soulful swag.

Review: Next up on Dusseldorf's Themes For Great Cities is the debut LP from local trio Folie 2, comprised of vocalist Marlene Kollender, Gregor Darman (aka Rasputin) and Sebastian Welicki (LSW/Trashlagoon). Anyone who caught their great podcast on LYL Radio full of slow, trancey music knows what to expect on this one. There's a strong nod to '80s pop for the most part, but also taking in chugging dark disco slow burners ('Confrontation') neon-lit boogie down numbers ('Night Times') and taking influence from sounds of their homeland circa the '70s ('Fullness Of My Heart').

Review: The Italian jazz scene of the 1970s turned up many gems but this is one of its lesser known treasures. It's an interesting and unusual collection from Folk Magic Band which was made up of 18 different members. They had their own alt set up in a Rome studio and were inspired by the free jazz movement of the day. As such there are pan-ethnic motifs next to the spiritual jazz of Pharoah Sanders and the wild orchestrations of Sun Ra and his Arkestra. It's intense and hard hitting in its quest to explore new musical ground.

Lisergico Club (5:02)
Review: If this is your first encounter with Follakzoid then prepare to feel a blustering wind rushing through your hair, even if that is only symbolically speaking. Hailing from Chile, the three piece proudly lay claim to influences that date back to the ancient music of the Andes mountain range dominating a vast chunk of their homeland. But if you didn't know that, their work would likely strike you as blisteringly powerful progressive rock with math, garage and grunge elements.

Or at least that's certainly true of 'El Humo', third track on this self-titled gem that feels purpose built for sweaty basements down dodgy backstreets. And the same can be said for 'Directo Al Sol'. Elsewhere, though, more spiritual nuances dominate. 'Loop' seems to send its loose guitar twangs into the cosmos, while 'Sky Input II' invites us to look over the edge of the peak into an endless beyond. Magical stuff.

Review: Alex Font is charged with serving up the MINIMALER Factory label's first release and an ambitious one it is too - Cross The Limits: Chapter 1 (we wonder how many chapters there might be?) is a minimal and tech house triple pack that offers a wealth of club-ready sounds. They are embellished with all manner of abstract details and creeping sound designs, from trippy pads to whispered vocals. Each one is intricately designed and carefully arranged to be in a constant state of flux that very much keeps you locked from start to finish. A trio of fine remixes from Dubtil, Franco Cinelli and Alexis Cabrera add further gravitas to this strong album.

Review: Richmond Fontaine's Post to Wire celebrates its 20th anniversary with a deluxe 2LP edition, featuring a bonus live disc on Curacao transparent color vinyl housed in a gatefold sleeve. Recognised by Uncut Magazine as one of the top ten albums of the year, this release is adorned with a hype sticker. Described as a blend between Gram Parsons' slide guitar majesty and Lou Reed's narrated New York, Post to Wire offers a collection of narrated snapshots of life, crafted by frontman Willy Vlautin. Vlautin's songwriting delves into the depths of human desperation and resilience, weaving tales of downtrodden characters with incisive lyricism reminiscent of Raymond Carver. The album's epic centerpiece, 'Broken Hearts,' stands out as a testament to Vlautin's storytelling prowess, binding together characters in a shared journey of struggle and hope. With tunes that evoke familiarity and characters that feel like neighbors, Post to Wire emerges as a great addition to the canon of passionate, literary rock 'n' roll.

Now comes this deluxe and 180g gatefold album Skint Fa with an alternate cover and 20 page lyric book. This is the band's third album in as many years after 2020's A Hero's Death saw them hit the number two spot in the album charts and pick up nominations at the GRAMMYs, BRITs and Ivor Novello Awards. After a sell out tour at Alexandra Palace that now serve up more darkly political ones, thrashing riffs and hard edged drums.

It is a collection of his most treasured unreleased gems and hard to find classics that provides a perfect overview of his wonderful sound for fans old and new. These lush sounds combine layered brass, jazz horns, sunny keys and crooning, loved up vocals with plenty of sliding bass and rich harmonisations. They're disco ready and perfect for Balearic gatherings as they ooze tropical and exotic charm from front to back. Each one has been remastered to sound as good as gold, too.

Review: They're a Marmite band no doubt, especially among those who followed the altogether more deviant and dengerous Nirvana that brought FF frontman Dave Grohl to the world's attention initially. But there's no denying the fact that the Foo Fighters' anthemic, surging power chord pileup of a sound has turned them into a prospect that - whether live or record - now massively eclipses their predecessor in popularity. This is the definitive double-LP compiliation of all of the Foo Fighters' most essential cuts, including 'Everlong', 'Monkey Wrench' and 'Rope' and many more.

Review: Foodman is now well known for his left-of-centre sounds having toured the world plenty of times. Back when his debut album arrived in 2012 though he was barely known at all. It came on Orange Milk and was a wonky fusion leftfield experimentation and beat music inspired by Chicago juke. It came back then on cassette only but now the same label has pressed it up to vinyl and that means it is sure to become a cult classic all over again. The often sorts, sketchy tracks are full of wonderful ideas, a lot of MIDI sounds, bizarre designs and great use of negative space.

Review: One of the most interesting artists to have emerged from the Czech and Slovak based crossbreed movements that dominated the first decade of the century on the harder side of d&b, Forbidden Society has evolved and morphed with the times to a much deeper, emotionally-wrought but still hard-assed sound. This seventh studio album (released on Noisia's iconic Vision imprint) is the best version of his fusions so far. From the dark industrial strength dubstep swagger of 'Wish' to the sci-fi hurricane of cuts like 'Deception' and 'Reaching Zero', this is an incredible body of work from an impressive and unique craftsman.

Review: Ryan James Ford returns to Clone with an album that was written in his new home of Berlin, but that is inspired by his life growing up in Canada. It is full of the sot of rave sounds he heard back then and distil some of the atmospheres of the places he visited and experiences he had, from swimming in cold rivers to exploring supposedly haunting areas and of course being lost int he rave. It is a visceral 14 track affair that combines electors techno, IDM and ambient in complex and rewarding fashion.

Foster was a master collaborator who worked with everyone from George Benson to the Jacksons to Stevie Wonder (an in fact played the keys on Songs In The Key Of Life.) But it was his work on Grant Green's funky live LP Alive! in 1970 that caught the attention of the Blue Note boss who tapped him up for this label debut two years later. It is a vibrant seton tunes with five originals as well as covers of the likes of Al Green. Kevin Gray has mastered it from the original tapes and it has been pressed on 180g vinyl at Optimal.

Review: Released back in 2003, Rounds was the third LP from Kieran Hebden as Four Tet and perhaps the first long player that widely established him as a pioneering voice within electronic music. Though it doesn't feel like a decade since it was released, Domino celebrate the album's tenth anniversary in requisite fashion here, reissuing it in double LP format and slipping in a CD of Four Tet performing live in Copenhagen in 2004. Listening back now, it's easy to understand why Rounds is viewed as an early classic in the Four Tet canon, transferring his love for free jazz records to a beat template that's more palatable on the ear (Fact pickers might want to know that Hebden recently revealed to Pitchfork the LP was made entirely from samples) "She Moves She" still sounds absolutely haunting too!

Review: Four Tet is back with a new album of shimmering wonderment on his own Text label. As ever, it's the way that Kieran Hebden tugs at the heart strings so artfully that makes him so well-loved, and he's not holding back one iota as "Sixteen Oceans" opens up with the ineffably pretty "School". There's some advanced garage ruminations on "Baby", classic ambience on "Harpsichord", and so the eclectic and extremely soul-cleansing vibes continue across three sides of wax. In addition to this wonderful new album, Hebden has also held back the fourth side for a bunch of locked grooves so satisfying you could get lost in them all day.

Review: The combination of hardcore and pop-punk tropes that led to the term "easycore", has arguably had no greater example of its anthemic potential than on the seminal third full-length from Boston's Four Year Strong. 'Enemy Of The World' highlighted how comfortably hefty breakdowns could rest side by side with mega catchy hooks, imbued with earnest, emotive and motivating lyricism. From the stadium ready, 'On A Saturday (Tonight We Feel Alive)', to the chugging fan favourite, 'It Must Really Suck To Be Four Year Strong Right Now' (titled as such in response to a shady review of friendly rivals Set Your Goals' sophomore effort), the project has gone on to not only be regarded as the band's finest work, but also a definitive genre staple in the decade since its initial release. A long overdue reissue, and essential purchase for the sub-genre aficionados.

Review: Fresh from the release of two tip-top twelves on Handy Records and Wolf Music, Malik Kassim brings his trademark Retromigration sound to the freshly minted LYAM label. Typically warm, woozy, bass-heavy and with plenty of intricate musical details - think Ron Trent, with a dash of the Burrell Brothers and the Detroit deep house swing of Andres - all four cuts are superb examples of the Dutch producer's approach to dancefloor dynamics. Highlights include the laidback, club-ready bump of 'Heat it Up', where undulating acid lines and synth-sax catch the ear; the shuffling, broken house sparkle of 'You Want That' (a genuinely sumptuous late-night delight smothered in spacey synth solos); and the mid-tempo, jazz-funk style title track, where loose-limbed live instrumentation and emotive solos come to the fore.

Groove' of the trance era, the track saw to acclaim and much raving (both rave reviews and rave parties) thanks to its proto-Deadmau5y clap layering and sultry vocals by British singer Coco. The milking of the brand inevitably followed, but despite the cynicism that might surround that, this is a beautiful and pure sounding vocal trance LP. Now seeing its first vinyl release (CD was the format for trance back then), 'You Are Alive' and 'Magic' are creatively acidic, cute cuts.

Review: RECOMMENDED
Even the most determinedly understated chin-strokers will likely have emitted a squeal of delight when this one was announced. Everyone's favourite electronic producer-cum-contemporary composer (or vice versa?) releasing his latest works of art across two media - namely an album on cult hero label Erased Tapes, and a movie available on highbrow streaming service Mubi.

This is the audio, and while nobody who caught the video when it was available to view on-demand could argue this is just as powerful on its own, the solo sound is still an intoxicating and compelling ride. 'The Dane' is classy piano bliss, '#2' sits in the big room electronica end of things, 'Fundamental Values' is a scatty, broken ambient journey to the edges of drum 'n' bass, 'Enters' opens on long, ambient refrains.

They met on the warehouse scene and have blossomed ever since with all six members of the band bringing their own influent to make for a truly eclectic and widely informed sound. This album has both eyes on the dancefloor as it dazzles with fresh tunes and colourful melodies. The band takes inspiration from the likes of George Clinton, Khruangbin and Jimmy McGriff along the way and it all comes on lush orange vinyl.

Review: Franc Moody is a UK band whose new album Into The Ether is steeped in deep funk and served up with a healthy dose of optimism, which sure is something we could also use plenty of right now. All the tunes find the band searching for a utopia, a better place for us all as summery comes to an end. It is a flawless and coherent work with rich orchestral layers and grooves to spare as warm, cosmic new disco is explored from a skilful instrumental angle with alluring vocals carefully draped over the top. Some cuts go deeper like the opener, some bring dancefloor joy like 'Raining In LA.'

Review: "A revelatory blast of soul, R&B and off-the-rails piano jams". Rolling Stone magazine could not have been much clearer in its recommendation of Plain Sight. Neal Francis' second album, released in 2021, nodded to everyone from George Clinton to Sly and the Family Stone, Curtis Mayfield to Prince. It was pop songwriting in the truest sense - free and experimental yet somehow universally enjoyable and captivating. The third, Francis Comes Alive, offered, not more of the same, but equally generous helpings of funk-infused, r&b topped soul-groove with a lashings of overbite. Now Return To Zero proves those were no flukes. That familiarly unpredictable yet soothing Francis sound is more refined and elegant than ever, but still seems to want to take you towards the hazy neon glow of a backstreet dancefloor long after dark.

Review: InFine has always been an enigmatic label. It started life when co-founder Alexandre Cazac attended a Francesco Tristano concert in Paris, during which the legendary pianist covered Derrick May's Detroit techno track 'Strings Of Life', compelling the attendee to team up with Yannick Matray and Agoria to create a platform for electronic-classical noodling. And, even if the latter French electronic tour de force has since left the team, the imprint has continued to push these kinds of boundaries since. Francois & the Atlas Mountains have some big shoes to fill with their debut for the label, then. And they do this with aplomb, albeit the kind of aplomb that's softly spoken, and sounds like you're gazing out across an endless view which is at once unknown and comforting. Electronic folk, chill-disco, whispered downtempo synth pop and patient plugged-in symphonies.

Review: Before Aretha Franklin made her mark with stomping southern soul in the late 60s, she had already built a diverse career. Beginning as a gospel singer, she spent the early 60s recording in various genres, with mixed success. These early recordings with the Ray Bryant group present her as a jazz vocalist, reminiscent of Sarah Vaughan or Ella Fitzgerald. Tracks like 'Ain't No Way' and 'Take a Look' capture her ability to blend effortless technique with deep emotion. The sessions are pristinely recorded with no overdubs, allowing Franklin's voice to shine in its purest form, proving her talent in jazz long before she became an icon of soul.

Review: "I think we all have fears within us and fears that we confront in our life at different times ... and how we react to those fears is how we earn who we really are," Franz Ferdinand frontman Alex Kapranos told Apple Music's Hanuman Welch in an interview about The Humans of Fear, its catalysts and sources of inspiration. Sonically, this is typically bombastic and almost relentlessly upbeat, following in the footsteps of the Glasgow group's established sound. Which has, of course, changed over the years. So while we once had a thoroughbred indie rock band named after a racehorse and Archduke Ferdinand, over the last decade or two they have evolved into a far more electronic and synth-heavy outfit. On The Humans, Ferdinand seem to have measured the distance betwixt the two with more accuracy than ever, sticking their flag in the surface of a perfectly realised middle ground.

Review: It's one of those elephant in the room questions many artists likely grapple with, without really discussing it openly. How will a musician's work be remembered after they have left this world? In many artistic cases, we only come to appreciate an individual's output for what it is after they've gone, and this in itself is likely a phenomenon that creatives dwell on whenever considering the wonder of life. Here, veteran electronic music composer Jill Fraser has used this idea as a central theme, using a vintage 1978 Serge Modular, a Prism Modular, and Ableton Push 3 to reinvent and reconfigure a number of American revival hymns. These archival tunes are made new, and now built for the future, raising questions about their own mortality, or lack thereof.

It's a record packed with cosmic arps and dazzling synth lines that reach for the stars over heavy, churning drums that lock you in. The track titles give more than subtle hints as to the vibes of these pieces, all of which are utterly timeless and could be long-lost 70s classics or future gems.

Review: 2006 was a very different time in rock 'n' roll. We'd cast off the Britpop and nu metal of the previous century's finale and millennium turn, and things had moved onto sounds that were far more sentimental, sometimes self-pitying and always hyper-emotional. This was true both of the rise of emo and hardcore resurgence, and the more chart (and advert)-friendly stuff coming from the likes of Keane and Coldplay. Over in the US, The Fray were looking to secure membership to that Closer-soundtrack worthy club and on their debut LP made a strong case for it. How To Save A Life features a number of powerful tracks, from the titular lead single to the piano-vocal showstopper, 'Hundred'. Moving enough to become the best selling digital album of all time, at the time (only trumped by Eminem's Recovery in 2010), here it is in physical form.

Review: Like a cross between Jimothy Lacoste, Lily Allen, Mac De Marco and The Breeders, Freak Slug is a fine addition to the esteemed Future Classic record label. Freak Slug appears to gravitate towards food-themed song titles and on single 'Piece of Cake' she makes her craft seem effortless with witty wordplay and melodies flowing out of her. 'Liquorice' is a bigger sounding tune, with a bit of Weezer kick, while 'Ya Ready' leans into a post-grunge territory with more serious, affecting somber tones and 'Sexy Lemon' has shades of Superorganism. A solid effort from a fast-rising star.

Part of that centers around the astonishing Boiler Room set he served up, but also plenty of credit is due for the music he makes. A lot of that is summed up here on Actual Life 3, the third installment of his series after the previous two back in 2021 and recent collabs with the likes of Swedish House Mafia and Future. It shows off his mastery of a range of different sounds and scenes across 13 fun and fresh tunes that are backed with emotive beats and catchy hooks as well as some standout vocals.

Guess like Planet Asia & Waz, Pink Siifu and Blu November add their own character to this spaced-out and stoned late-night listening companion. It might be one of Fred's best yet.

Review: Shiny boogie reissue action from Peoples Potential Unlimited, the undisputed kings of disco digging. This label has to be recognised for what it's done, for the amount of material that it's made available to contemporary boogie addicts, and for the style with which they've done it. Here we have some glorious material from 1980-1981 by Mark J's Freeway project. If there truly is such as thing as 'blue-eyed soul', then this is your 'green-eyed boogie', a marvellous, uptempo collection of funky tunes with a subtle electro edge running through the lower ends of the mixes. Also, it'll surely appeal to a variety of 'soul' lovers, from the ones who like that slight electro edge to their disco, to others who are into their vocal solos, piano keys and yes, even some organs. All in all, this is a timeless piece of music which had been lost in the depths of time and into the pockets of the second-hand market cats. Don't miss it.

Review: Amaro Freitas, hails from Recife, Brazil, and is propelled through life through by searching out different experiences. Venturing to Manaus in the Amazon basin in 2020 before starting work on this album, pianist Freitas immersed himself in a transformative journey that influenced his musical creation profoundly. Collaborating with the Satere Mawe indigenous community, his album Y'Y pays homage to nature and ancestral wisdom. Through tracks like 'Mapinguari (Encantado da Mata)' and 'Uiara (Encantada da Agua) - Life and Cure,' Freitas weaves tales of powerful spirits and mystical encounters. Incorporating elements from Afro-Brazilian and Indigenous cultures, the record is a significant exploration of connection, tradition, and the incandescent power of enchanted spirits.

Review: Pedestrian Verse is a critically acclaimed album by Frightened Rabbit, whose rapidly blooming career was cut short by the death of singer Scott Hutchison in May 2018. It has now been a full decade since the band dropped the mini-masterpiece and so it gets remastered at half speed and reissued by Atlantic with the full and original 12-track album on LP next to a bonus 12" with 11 extra tracks. This was the band's fourth studio album and the only one to feature guitarist and keyboardist Gordon Skene. The record is inspired in part by a break up and finds each of the members of the band stepping up their contribution to the songwriting. It's a great piece of modern indie history.

Review: Frightnrs are considered one of Daptone's best artists but they have put out any new music since 201 after the tragic passing from ALS of the front man, Dan Klein. That wrong is righted here with Always, a new posthumous long player that comes on black wax as well as a coloured version. As fans would expect, it is a raw and soulful offering from the Queens-based reggae outfit that has been built around vocal stems that Klein recorded before his death. It forms a fitting final album from this outfit who also did more than reggae revivalism by adding elements of Motown, doo-wop, Blues and gospel.

Review:
For the first time ever since the mid-80s, Robert Fripp's God Save The Queen is now avaialble on fresh vinyl once more. It was the second solo album from Fripp and is made up almost entirely of so-called 'Frippertronics,' which means much of the record was performed by improvisation. Under each track are solid drums and bass to get the grooves going and guitar loops for the five tracks were recorded live in concert during 1979. It's a real left turn of an album and one that can be as mesmerising as it can wild.

Review: Breaking the Shell is an innovative new release from a top trio formed of drummer Andrew Cyrille, guitarist Bill Frisell, and pipe organist Kit Downes. Their much anticipated album features a rare and captivating blend of instruments including things such as electric guitar, pipe organ, and drums and therefore offers a fresh sound across 11 new cuts. The collaboration creates a meditative exploration of sound along the way and that allows these three visionary musicians to explore new dimensions of creativity and expression at every turn.
