Hypocrite (2:41)
You'll See (2:36)
Review: New York's Gregg Green teams up with Pimpernel Jones (Herma Puma) to deliver a release that operates around the more soulful, thought-provoking end of hip-hop. The title track 'Hypocrite' delivers a powerful message, calling out the hypocrisy of those in power while showcasing Green's signature emotive vocals. The track is set against a smooth yet compelling backdrop, with Jones' production adding depth and warmth. On the B-side, 'You'll See' offers a cautionary tale, urging listeners to stay true to their values as they navigate the pursuit of dreams. It's a track filled with subtle wisdom, offering both an uplifting and introspective vibe. This release exemplifies the duo's ability to create soulful, engaging music with both heart and purpose.

This Way (4:53)
Breathe & Stop (Abstract Blend) (4:00)
Review: REPRESS ALERT!: New York producer P-Sol has hit on a super effective formula for starting the party, stitching together a selection of familiar samples and hooks, adding some beautifully dusty breaks and adding a final sheen of shiny production skills. Both sides of this 7" have a touch of raw 'two turntables' action about them, while remaining impeccably constructed and tight, with the A-side 'This Way' proving to be the slightly speedier and slightly more funk/r&b-flavoured, while 'Breathe & Stop (Abstract Blend)' is the one for the pure hip-hop heads. Both, however, are dynamite in the box, needless to say.

Dusted (5:38)
Stuck (6:30)
Review: Pangaea and Leonce's collaboration feels like a natural evolution of their respective sounds. 'Dusted' takes the more energetic route, drawing from UKG's signature drum patterns and crisp, chopped-up vocals. There's a weightlessness to it that feels characteristic of Pangaea's style, with the track riding that fine line between chaos and precision. It's rapid but controlled, capturing the essence of the UKG sound without resorting to tired cliches. On the other hand, 'Stuck' leans into a more understated vibe, pulling from the foundation of 90s US club music. It's relaxed, more patient in its progression, with a warm, spacious quality that contrasts nicely with the jitteriness of 'Dusted.' The contrast between the two tracks showcases the range of both artists: while they're clearly rooted in different scenes, they've found a way to merge their influences in a way that feels both fresh and familiar.

Flow Ya Mind (3:16)
Flow Ya Mind (instrumental) (3:16)
Review: Neibiss and Pasokon Ongaku Club's collaborative single 'Flow Ya Mind' is a superb new single from an Osaka-based label themed around "baths." This marks their second release following 2022's On Rei/Froject A by EVISBEATS and Nagipan. The track combines a solid bassline with an ambient backdrop, snappy Amen breakbeats and Neibiss' relaxed, bath-themed rap. The song's calming composition is said to suit any hot spring setting and we can't disagree. Mastered by Naoya Tokuno and with artwork by Neibiss' rafitt, the is a fine new 7".

Born in Hawaii and raised in Oklahoma City, the LA-based singer-songwriter Rodney Hulsey fuses rap, 60s soul and funk with hip-hop, sunny melodies and sophisticated lyricism that does a fine job of carrying Motown's legacy into the contemporary musical landscape. This seven tracker explores themes of love and self-growth all while managing to cook up lively and vibrant vibes that are rooted in funk with some interesting subtle detours. From the big open 'When I Get Home' to the catchy hooks of 'Cherry Tree' this is a potent new 12" for sure.

Review: World-renowned dub artist Hummingbird and reggae and hip-hop crossover rapper Pazoodog team up for a new 7" record here that goes above and beyond! Hummingbird is known for global collaborations and being active in Japan and beyond, while Pazoodog is celebrated for his unique blend of reggae and hip-hop, along with his distinctive lyricism and smooth flow. Their collaboration explores the universal theme of time's passage and blends a mature, melancholic sound based on Hummingbird's sophisticated beats and Pazoodog's exceptional lyrical style. I Ain't Playin With Y'all (3:44)
Review: Get ready for a classic hip-hop throwback with 'Definition Of Ill', the latest collaboration from Phill Most Chill and Krash Slaughta. Channeling the essence of early 90s hip-hop, the title track on Side-1 is packed with old-school vibes, heavy on samples and beats that hit hard. Phill's sharp rhymes and Krash Slaughta's impeccable production make for an unbeatable combo that will get any head nodding. Flip to Side-2, and 'I Ain't Playin With Y'all' delivers more New York-style boom-bap, complete with killer scratching and raw energy. The beats are tight, the flow is relentless, and the overall vibe feels like a trip back to the golden age of hip-hop. Phill's lyrics are inspired by Krash's beats, and it shows in the synergy between the two. This vinyl release is limited and comes in two distinct cover and label versions. If you're a fan of premium hip-hop, you won't want to miss out.

Review: Victoria Port, one half of the acclaimed electronic soul duo Anushka, steps into the spotlight with her debut solo EP, an accomplished exploration of soulful melodies and heartfelt lyricism delivered via powerful vocals and introspective songwriting. The EP features a diverse range of sounds, from the soulful grooves of 'Cigarette' and 'Haunting' to the more intimate balladry of 'Keep Love For Me' and the title track, 'Did It Again'. Port's lyrics delve into themes of vulnerability, resilience and the transformative power of motherhood, drawing inspiration from the legacy of her Dominican grandmother and the powerful women in her life. A very promising debut.

Review: Connie Price & The Keystones team up with Fullee Love (aka. Soup of Jurassic 5) - as well as New Orleans' very own bounce king Hasizzle - to bring you the brand new second-line funk anthem 'Come On Down (To New Orleans)'. Patently referencing and working within the regional New Orleans hip-hop style known as bounce music, Price, Love and Hasizzle stick true to the soulful, syrupy and yet still hard-edged call-and-response style indicative of this 80s-90s stylistic cusp. Slacken lyrics, soul-tinged choruses, skrrt ad-libs and one-two-step antiphony predominate on this versioned A-B sider, as Professor Shorthair also provides a quintessential bounce demo mix on the B.

Just Like You (Paul Sitter DJ Friendly edit) (4:22)
Review: After the enormously positive response to the first edition of the Prodigy edits, Dope Edits is back with a follow up 7". The Russian turntablist and DJ Paul Sitter is also a deft and experienced editor. A lover of all things hip-hop, it is natural for him to create urban renditions of rock and popular songs. These two tracks presented here originally remixed by the 90s techno act Prodigy's leader Liam Howlett. For the first side, Paul remixes Iggy Pop's 'Lust For Life' into a bombastic alternate version that is sure to raise the roof and turn the heads of who hears it. For the second side, 'Just Like You' by Ian Brown is turned into a frenzied and futuristic version that is unique. Whether you know the original songs, you got to check these out.

Get Loose (acappella) (2:16)
Review: Fresh off the back of X-Ray Ted's debut album Moving On comes this instrumental/scratch tool version of 'Get Loose', one of the record's best-loved non single tracks. Prior to the full album's making and eventual completion, The Bristol-based DJ and producer had spent years honing his craft and refining his signature sound, which drew heavily on soul, funk, hip-hop and breaks; all of which were styles heavily indebted to the street battle breaks culture found in 90s New York and other major cities. 'Get Loose', the seventh track on the record, features British rappers Dr. Syntax and Elemental and is a fiery exploration of what it means to loosen oneself; the track features here in full original form, alongside its locked groove and acapella versions, the former of which samples an oldskool comedy set characteristic of the kinds of sources battle DJs would sift theirs from.

Review: Loma Vista proudly present the latest full-length album by Common, one of the so-called 'conscious' hip-hop scene's earliest progenitor. Here, the rapper teams up with fellow wordsmith and DJ Pete Rock - whom the former refers to as "one of The Greatest Creators Hip Hop and Music has ever seen" (capitalisations not going unnoticed) - for a 15-track meditation on the proverbial theatre: the setting in which the fantastical drama of hip-hop takes place. Never having worked together before, Common and Rock roll out an uncommon compendium, fulfilling in particular Common's dream of working with an antecedent great. Mid-album scratch-fests like 'All Kind Of Ideas' evoke golden-days hip-hop nostalgia through their easy, boppy grooves and images of hustling and "cooking up", while 'Wise Up' and 'Dreamin'' move more textural and vinyl-crackly with things, musing equally on the requisites of leg-breaking performance. A glisteningly soulful album, invoking the glabrous power of street dreams.

He is a Londoner and lawyer who played a key part in the UK's golden hip-hop era and picked up props for his work from dons like Nas while also working with De La Soul, Wu-Tang Clan, Guru, Slum Village and Pharoahe Monch. This record taps into that time with its soul-drenched, low-slung and late-night beats, specially and politically aware lyrics and gorgeous samples. A contemporary classic steeped in authenticity.

Review: Now here's a real slice of East Coast hip-hop history, packaged for those Londonites who - even as far back as the early to mid 90s - felt the genre's magnanimous influence deeply, despite the transatlantic journey required of its promotion outside the USA. Existing only so far perhaps on bootlegged white label vinyl marked "Import" in big block lettering, this mythical live recording of The Notorious B.I.G.'s 1995 performance at the Hammersmith Palais in London (as part of Tim Westwood's 1FM Rap Show Launch Party) otherwise floats the interwebs either in casual YouTube video or cassette rip format. Clocking in at just over 50 minutes, Big Poppa's tragic ghost sounds to haunt the record, masterfully moving through his most hard-boiled, ironed songs in quick sixteen-track succession, chopping and changing between them through the adeptest of DJ scratchups; the hypiest, airhorn-blariest transitions. All Biggie's greatest hits feature (he'd released most of his chart-toppers by 1995; this recording was made two years before he died) and the heavy douse of reverb, supplied by the venue, lends an extra historic gravitas to Smalls' not-so-small voice. The acapella at the end is an especially grave, hushed moment; it's as if the lack of instrumental backing portends the many moments of silence that would follow two years later.

Review: Open Mike Eagle may not have all the answers, but he asks some of the smartest questions in hip-hop. On Hella Personal Film Festival, he teams up with British producer Paul White for a psychedelic blend of soul-funk, booming drums and introspective storytelling. Recorded in London, the album continues where Dark Comedy left off-witty, anxious and deeply reflective. Eagle dissects modern life's absurdities, from social media addiction to racial microaggressions and uses that to craft surreal yet painfully real vignettes. With guest features from Aesop Rock and Hemlock Ernst, these tense anthems explore vulnerability with a cutting sense of humour.

Review: PARTYNEXTDOOR's eponymous album marks an evolution from his debut, shedding the occasional sleaze for a more benevolent swagger. Jahron Brathwaite crafts an album that blends self-assured cockiness with sincere admiration for his subjects, notably on tracks like 'East Liberty' and the Drake-assisted 'Recognize.' His production, thick and molasses-like, veers between nostalgic 90s r&b vibes and experimental twists that nod to modern rap landscapes. While some sample choices falter, such as the derivative use of Disclosure's 'Latch' on 'Sex on a Beach,' Brathwaite's ability to craft mood remains a standout feature. PARTYNEXTDOOR TWO asserts itself as a compelling entry in Toronto's ratch&b scene, with Brathwaite's artist growth on full display and his knack for blending contemporary influences with his own distinctive style.

Review: An impressive compendium of raw instrumental beats and rap features composed and orchestrated by the late producer Paten Locke from Atlanta, GA, who sadly passed away in 2019 from stage-four cancer. All conceived, produced and recorded by Paten in the mid-2010s, this rough collection spans the best part of a decades' work, with the very last of these bombout beats having only been completed in 2017, two years before his death. Now reissued by Full Plate, the theme and title of this record feels timely and jesting, as if to suggest and anticipate his friends, family and fans make merry after his passing. Despite the demure context, Locke's preferred tone of unwavering poise and braggadocio, felt in his production style and choice of features, is not lost on us here.

Review: Three years in the making, Peaky Beats' debut ten-track LP Bloodlines takes us on a journey through ancient and modern Middle-Eastern sounds fused with the whole gamut of UK bass music. Whether riffing off the mystical promises of the Jewish 'Kabbalah' or the feline gaze of the 'Cats Of Iraq', this is hardly a record sharing in the moody obsessional headnods evinced by Muslimgauze; instead, all tracks here are weighty two-steppers' gut-punctures, squeezing reams of tricksy garagey fun from the otherwise sparse reference to the Middle East - though this is eventually thoroughly fleshed out, especially in the use of characteristically Levantine samples in the breakdowns and transitions.

Review: On PTSD: Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, Pharoahe Monch continues the story he began telling on his prior LP, W.A.R. (We Are Renegades), his third studio album and first independent release. The Queens emcee narrates, in both literal and metaphoric ways, the trials and tribulations of an independent artist who is at war with the music industry and the struggle of the black male experience in America. In a 2012 interview, the rapper explained the connections between the two projects beyond their titles: "the W.A.R.album was like, I'm going to battle against the machine, I'm doing this independently. I'm putting some things out that I learned and I'm going to expose the music industry. PTSD is the result of me doing that, where I am emotionally now. It's similar to how someone comes back, from war and is stricken by re-adjusting to a regular situation." Now reissued via his very own W.A.R. media, it's clear that this is a war that Monch has not stopped waging.

Review: "Some of the best never make it too far/eventually, had to let the dream die, get a 9-5/not really livin', now, just stayin' alive, raisin' kids, drinking away the pain and stayin' high..." So intones the title track of the front smasher of this LP, 'I Get Phunky'. The fantasy of a hard schism between always-hungry go-getters and kaput has-beens can be problematic, but on the latest record by Phill Most Chill and Djar One, we can certainly hear why the idea remains compelling: from the rest, the Le Havre and Bronx artists use it to set themselves apart. But perhaps it's this record's golden-aged, clavinet-ridden, breaks-bowler instrumentals that really galvanise this motif. 'Ill Rhymin' and 'Hell Yeah' further the sense with unabashed appeals to certitude in the lyrics and beats, standing apart from the doomers and gloomers. Nothing on this record doesn't "land"; not a hit, not a bar.
