Review: On his previous album,2020's 61 Mirrors/Music for SKALAR, Kangding Ray largely eschewed the dancefloor in favour of IDM, ambient and experimental electronica pieces that ranged from the inspired to the merely odd. Ultrachoma, the Berlin-based French producer's belated follow-up, takes a different tack, making greater use of club-ready rhythms while continuing to push melodic elements - lead lines, counter-motifs and chords - to the fore. The result is an album rooted in sci-fi techno and far-sighted IDM that's full to bursting with highlights. Our picks of an extremely strong bunch include the broken techno gem 'Supraverde', the bustling, bleeps-and-breaks workout 'Bitter Keylime', the Livity Sound-esque 'Pervinca Lucente' and woozy ambient number 'Sage Aqua'.
