Review: Those who've been following the nu-jazz scene since the sound's early 2000s hey-day should be familiar with Gerardo Frisina, a Schema regular whose Latin Jazz inspired releases are rarely less than superb. "Marombo" is another superb outing. The A-side original mix is as percussive as you'd expect, with tons of South American style drums and a head-cracking double bass line, but also doffs a cap to jazz-house and the echoing sounds of dub. We'd file it under "dubbed-out Latin jazz-house", which is a niche sub-genre worth embracing. Frisina layers up the percussion further on the equally trippy, club-ready flipside "Part 2" version, which gives greater prominence to the Latin vocal samples buried deep in the A-side mix.

Review: Gerardo's first new material since last year's album Movement, the "Olympia" EP sees the Milano musician return to his club roots with five of his most floor-focused cuts. From the Shiffrin-style guitars and Jorge Ben licks of the dramatic cinematic title track we head deep into the dance by way of the cadent Latin soul of "Tin Tin Deo", the Hammond-squeezing "Talking Sticks" and the percussion-primed heads-down Arabic charms of "East Breeze". We climax with "The Obsession", a thumping drum-focussed samba number that tips a big nod to the likes of Master At Work.

Review: Five years on from their debut collaborative EP 'Frisina Meets Toco', modern Brasilian dance artists Gerardo Frisina and Toco return for a second faceoff, this time with liaising artist Luzia Dvorek serving as ringmaster. Centring on samba-infused jazz and deep house with mystical and folk influences, "deixa passar" translates from Portuguese to "let it pass", though the mood is certainly not outright passive. This delectably quartered slice of carnivalesque dance music is rather rich in sonic papaya juice, charting sustained vocal contrasts between Toco and Luzia against smoky and furnaced beats. Aperient track 'Deixa Passar' leans heaviest on languid piano, whilst dozier mists emerge on the B-side in the form of 'Ile' and its rework by Gerardo Frisina, bringing pan flutes, strings, breathy vocal counterpoints, cabasa shaker, and subtle bass undercurrents.

Taking the Booker T dreaminess and Hammond flourishes of The Lola's super-rare "Soul 70", he's beefed up the percussion and added an array of richly textured dubbiness with mesmerising effect. Flip for "Colours". An original by Gerardo, it's the ideal foil to the somnambulant sonics of the title track; stomping with northern soul glee, it's a spellbinding fusion of flutes, heavy percussion and wily organ stabs. Schema seldom disappoint, and Gerardo is the reason why.

Review: Since his debut with Schema Records in 2001, Gerardo Frisina has poured his soul into modernising styles such as Latin jazz, funk, and soul. In Sight Vol. 1 now introduces a fresh batch of such cosmo-futuristic moodsetters, continuing a trend that was first set in motion with his debut Moving Ahead (2020). Now the new album, preluded by singles 'Mindoro' and 'Desejar', hears seven tracks, including a cinematic bossa supernova 'O SoNho' as well as an exclusive cut from a rare and revered 10" deep cut from 2009. Review: Those who've been followed the nu-jazz sound closely over the last two decades should already be familiar with the work of Italian trumpeter Gerardo Frisina; after all, this is the Schema regular's eight studio set since the dawn of the century. In our opinion, Moving Ahead is also one of the best, with Frisina expanding on his usual Latin-jazz inspired sound via tracks that variously incorporate elements of samba house, West and East African drum music, jazz house, dub and tropical-tinged jazz-funk. Yet for all the subtle eclecticism, there are constant threads that run throughout, specifically densely packed percussion and Frisina's haunting trumpet and sax solos.

Review: Alongside Schema label-mate Nicola Conte, Gerardo Frisina has been at the forefront of the Italian nu-jazz scene for the best part of two decades. In that time, he's released a string of fine albums, though this full-length excursion - his sixth in total - is Frisina's first since 2014. Like previous sets, it's rooted in jazz and the heavily percussive rhythms of South America, but also looks to dub and deep house for inspiration. While some of the album's more traditional moments are very good - see the breezy "Blue Latin" and "Naquela Base" - it's those blessed with heavy sub-bass and lashings of echo and delay (check "InCantao" and "Baracoa") that hit home hardest.

Review: Gerarado Frisina has always been something of a vinyl enthusiast, meaning plenty of his releases have never made it to CD or digital download. It's these that form the basis of Modern Latin Jazz, a bespoke "best of" that gathers together tracks released at various points over his 16-year career. You get two of his best releases - this year's fantastic Latin Blue album and 2015's Olympia EP - in their entirety, plus tracks taken from rare and hard-to-find 12" singles from the dawn of the decade and long before. The two-disc set does a great job of showcasing Frisina's increasingly dub-tinged approach, mixing Latin jazz floor-fillers, percussive stompers and snaking jazz-house shufflers with more traditional bossa-jazz fare and the kind of warm, loose-limbed nu-jazz that was once found on Jazzanova albums.

Review: On his latest album, Italian nu-jazz hero Gerardo Frisina displays a rawer side to his electronic music style, whilst merging it with his typical Latin crossover. The Rhythmic Conversations LP comes courtesy of Milan's Schema - an imprint which he's become a stalwart of. He takes aesthetics from Cuba, South America and Africa then crosses the Atlantic Ocean: incorporating percussive and tribal elements via the dancefloor. Highlights include the colourful Afro-jazz explosion of "Camaguey", the sweltering and hypnotic raindance that is "Arawak" (featuring some of the most sublime polyrhythms we've heard in a while) plus the deep and lo-slung spiritualism of "Yeha".

Review: Playful Italian club cuts from Gerardo Frisina on his astutely named LP Joyful Sound. Taking influence from well-trodden sounds, perhaps each describable (at least by genre pedants) as Afro-Latin music, broken beat, jazzdance and minimal house - whatever the symbiotic result, it sounds great. We're caught off-guard as low-end scraping pulsers like 'Almost Free' blend surprisingly brilliantly with dreamy piano-minimal bits such as 'Kilig'.
