ROCK THA HOUSE TRAXX
Cat: RTHT 001. Rel: 01 Nov 24
Nima Gorji - "Get Me Out Of Here" (7:39)
Quenum - "Miss You Ready" (6:35)
Carlo Gambino - "The Goddess" (6:20)
Mihai Popoviciu - "Nimph" (6:08)
Review: After two decades entertaining dancers in Santiago, Chile, the Rock Tha House crew have decided to launch their own label. With local legend Camilo Gil and Mexico City-based Mario Flores at the helm, the imprint aims to showcase Chilean talent - though this compilation style debut EP features cuts from artists based all over the world. Nima Gorji sets the tone with 'Get Me Out Of Here', a hypnotic and mind-altering fusion of minimal house sparsity and deliciously psychedelic electronics, before Quenum delivers a typically Chilean blend of oddball house drums, weird noises and Villalobos style effects. Over on side B, Carlo Gambino's 'The Goddess' is a tech-tinged chunk of deep house haziness, while Mihai Popovicu's 'Nimph' is a classical-sounding chunk of ultra-spacey tech-house deepness.

Los Conquistadores Chocolates (reissue)
Cat: 10EXP 201331. Rel: 31 Aug 21
Johnny Hammond - "Los Conquistadores Chocolates"
Quasimode - "Los Conquistadores Chocolates"
Review: A really cool concept from Expansion here; one side is a reissued seminal classic, the other is a contemporary version. And what a way to start the start the series; hard bop hero Johnny Hammond influenced pretty much every soul, jazz, rare groove and funk artist who've followed in his path, and the joyously unpredictable "Los Conquistadores Chocolates" is one of his best. Naturally Japanese jazz outfit Quasimode are an ideal remix choice. Known for their wildstyle riffage and signature switches, they've paid the utmost respect to Hammond.

Tropics (marbled peach vinyl 12")
Cat: AUS 200A. Rel: 15 Oct 24
Tropics (5:31)
Born Again (feat Laura Roy) (4:04)
Japanese Knives (3:29)
Review: Now busy running a popular studio in Brooklyn, Will Holland has less time to devote to his popular Quantic project. While that is very much our loss, he does at least reappear occasionally to remind us of his talents. 'Tropics', his first release for well over a year, is therefore a rare treat - with the emphasis on treat. The A-side title track does a good job in combining his often-explored Cuban and South American musical influences with the bass-heavy shuffle of Prins Thomas style dub disco. Over on side B, 'Born Again', featuring Laura Roy on vocals, doffs a cap to his formative releases of the 2000s on Tru Thoughts, while 'Japanese Knives' is a chunky, string-laden workout reminiscent of some of the Quantic Soul Orchestra's most picturesque instrumentals.

Review: From the opening notes of Kamaal The Abstract, it’s clear that Q-Tip is venturing into uncharted musical territory. Known for his integral role in A Tribe Called Quest, this solo project sees him shedding the constraints of traditional hip-hop in favour of a more expansive, genre-blurring exploration. Jazz provides the backbone, but the album is an eclectic fusion, pulling in elements of funk, r&b, rock, and soul, all wrapped around Tip’s signature laid-back delivery.Tracks frequently evolve into extended jams, with lush solos and intricate improvisations scattered throughout. There’s a palpable sense of freedom and experimentation — each song feels like a journey, shifting moods and textures in unexpected ways. While many albums seek cohesion, Kamaal The Abstract thrives on its unpredictability. It’s unafraid to meander, with Tip leading his band into new sonic landscapes, guided by colourful chord progressions and a playful approach to structure. At its core, this is an album that relishes in its own contradictions. It’s bold yet introspective, loose but meticulously crafted. Q-Tip is both centre stage and part of a larger ensemble, constantly pushing the boundaries of what he, and hip-hop, could be. This project was a bold statement at the time, and it remains an adventurous, genre-defying listen that captures a moment of creative risk and vulnerability in Tip’s evolution as an artist.

Review: Carrying the legacy of their late uncle, who was the cult and crate digger's favourite qawwali legend Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, Rizwan-Muazzam Qawwali return with a profoundly moving collection of songs on At the Feet of the Beloved. The album pulses with the intense emotions of love's anxious passion and the dreamlike devotion it inspires. The vocals and arrangements are masterfully refined throughout so sit in harmony with the work of the ensemble to create a transcendent musical experience that takes you way beyond your own world and into new realms.

Stand Up (extended version) (6:44)
Review: The new album by Quantic - aka. multi instrumentalist, DJ, composer and producer Will Holland - is in many ways an evolution. Now twenty years into his career, Dancing While Falling is the British-born, New York-based artist's most live sounding, euphoric and, in his own words, grown-up release to date. Capturing the beginnings of every good person's revelatory movement from an individual to a collective spirit, Holland originally began the album in his Brooklyn studio, before realising that he didn't just want to make a record that reflected his 'singular pandemic wormhole', but rather one that tapped into the essential togetherness of the human condition. So too does this record explore themes of connection felt through, and made more intense by, the antagonistic bouts of loneliness that characterised COVID-19. Influenced by legendary artists in the scene like Bohannon and Larry Levan, Quantic wanted to make a disco -eaning album at first; "I'm really interested in Latin music and Afro Caribbean rhythms and I think there's a really amazing point in history where the emergence of those rhythms and its combination with American soul sparked what we now know as disco," he says. This PIAS extended edition comes one year on from its initial 2023 release, Quantic here expands on his work by adding a ream of extended versions.

Review: Following the success of their first collaborative album, 2017's Curao, Will 'Quantic' Holland and Colombian "folkloric" singer-songwriter India Gongora have once more joined forces for a second joint full-length. Designed as a musical exploration of "the nostalgia of impossible love", the set's uniquely eclectic, widescreen sound joins the dots between the traditional styles of Colombia's pacific coast, cumbia, rock, string-drenched South American ballads and the kind of hard-to-pigeonhole, musically intricate productions that were once the preserve of Rotary Connection's Charles Stepney. It's a terrific album all told, with Holland conjuring up genuine musical magic and Gongora delivering some of the most stunning sounding vocals of her career.

Review: Adrian Quesada is a multi-instrumentalist and producer who featured in the Grammy-winning Grupo Fantasma as well a plethora of other ventures like Black Puma and The Echocentrics. Now he's back with a new solo album which celebrates the funky, psych-licked sound that washed through Latin America in the 60s and 70s. It almost comes on like a library record, so silky is the sound, but there's enough nuance and expression edged into the playing to take it into a more personal sphere. If you dig groove-minded crafters like Quantic, you're going to love the sound of Adrian Quesada.

Review: Quiet Dawn's latest offering, Celebrate, is an 11-track testament to the eclectic talent that has made him a cornerstone of the First Word family for a decade. Following in the footsteps of his previous ventures, particularly the Movements EP, this album seamlessly blends broken beat flavors with a diverse range of influences. Featuring luminaries like Bembe Segue, LyricL, and Oliver Night, Celebrate is a terrific drift through soulful grooves, lively bars and infectious rhythms. From uplifting jazz samba vibes to downtempo boom bap, Quiet Dawn effortlessly melds organic and electronic elements, creating a good dose of positivity and good vibes. Tracks like 'Celebrate,' composed with his son on his lap, and collaborations with talents like Bembe Segue and Oliver Night, highlight Quiet Dawn's ability to translate personal moments into universal celebrations of life, love and cultural diversity. With infectious energy and a message of turning negativity into positivity, Celebrate invites listeners to dance, reflect and embrace the richness of our individual journeys.

Review: The first Quiet Places album, 2020's simply titled Volume 1, had its roots in a late-night, whisky-fuelled 'laptop jam' by three experienced British producers, progressive house legend Charlie May (most famously a member of Spooky in the 90s) and Dennis White and Dave Gardner of Bedrock-signed outfit Knives Out. We're not sure whether whisky was involved in the production of this similarly immersive sequel, but it certainly shares its predecessor's alluring blend of field recordings, outer-space electronics, pastoral instrumentation, undulating melodies and abstract sounds. This time round, they've taken us on four lengthy trips, each stretched across a side of wax, which bob, weave, rise and fall like the greatest early 90s ambient mixtape (or, if you're more academic, sound collage) that you've ever heard.

Review: Although experimental in nature - most of his music is made from crackling, ultra-atmospheric tape loops - Gareth Quinn Redmond's music is breathlessly beautiful and universally beguiling. He's already proved that on his previous LPs - not least 2019's Satoshi Ashikawa-inspired 'Laistigh Den Ghleo' - but once again confirms it on 'Ar Ais Aris'. He describes the eight-track set as "daydreaming environmental music full of accidental miracles and soothing backdrops", and that's an apt description. Ghostly melodies and enveloping chords, sometimes manipulated for extra wooziness, emerge from dense forests of tape hiss and static, creating becalmed ambient soundscapes that tend towards the poignant and picturesque. There aren't many copies around, so we'd recommend pre-ordering to secure a copy.

Review: The long beloved Balance series of DJ mixes gathers two prominent figures in the history of dance music for this one episode - Dave Seaman & Quivver. The two are paired up for this double CD set that also features two new tracks to make this project even more appetising. Both Dave Seaman and John Graham aka Quivver have over 30 plus years in the business each, with DJ gigs and credits lists that go on for days to read and their experience shows here. Highlights include Dave's heavy driving remix of 'Low Burn' by Underworld, Ben Archbold's epic 'Psychedelic Halo' and Timo Maas's bass heavy remix of Polaroit's 'Apart'. Dave and Quivver's mixing is flawless as usual - their ability to take a handful of strong tracks and make an epic journey is something they have earned their stripes doing, now you can experience it from the comfort of your living room.
