Herdersmat Part 23
Cat: MORDBOX 003DISC1. Rel: 23 Mar 23
The Advent - "Radar 06" (7:31)
Sedvs - "Come Clean" (5:38)
Bas Mooy & Jeroen Liebregts - "Ash" (7:06)
Under Black Helmet - "Message" (5:52)
Review: Those seeking out the hardest, no holds barred techno need look no further than the latest Mord release. On Herdersmat Part 23, the esteemed Dutch label presents four furious tracks by some of the scene's heaviest hitters. On side A, the one-and-only Cisco Ferreira returns under The Advent alias with the proper old school techno vibe of 'Radar 06', followed by the functional DJ tool by Sedvs 'Come Clean' which is proper tackle for tripping out under the strobe. Over on the second side of the disc, you'll be banged into submission by a couple of seething industrial-edged cuts; label staple Bas Mooy teams up with Jeroen Liebregts on the seething 'Ash' and closing it out with the Code Is Law affiliated Under Black Helmet on 'Message'.

Lionsong (Choral mix) (4:50)
Review: One of several intriguing artists to be commissioned to rework music from Bjork's Vulnicura album, Hemlock boss Untold takes a novel approach on his Chroal mix of "Lionsong". Bolstered by additional vocal tones from the same choir that appeared on previous Bjork LP Biophilia, Untold seeks rhythmic inspiration from his own discography, specifically "Flexible". The track originally appeared as a single-sided 12" back in 2009, and it brims with the madcap energy of early Untold beats, all woodblock percussion and scuffed found sound snippets. It's an unlikely partnership of sounds, but the legacy of Bjork's distinctive voice atop edgy electronics makes the whole wild cocktail go down smooth.

Black Devil/Prins Thomas - "On Just Foot (Slide Inside)"
Black Devil/Unit 4 - "An Other Skin (Days Of Blackula)"
Black Devil/Black Mustang - "Constantly No Respect (The Phenomena Of)"
Review: Black Devil Disco Club returns to action on LoEB with "Ride Again", a collection of mixes from his "In Dub" album. First up is the Prins Thomas mix of "On Just Foot", a chugging Italo disco groover led by a rolling arpeggiated b-line, quirky analogue stabs, vocoder vocal hits and wicked conga-laden beats. Proper floor-pleasing Italo workout. Next we have the Unit 4 mix of "An Other Skin", more b-line driving space disco with dark sounds and huge synth lines. Last but not least is the Black Mustang mix of "Constantly No Respect", a hard-hitting percussive jam exploring the darker side of the Italo universe.

Bou & TI - "Road Runner" (3:46)
Review: Continuing to lead from the front after years at the top of its game, the next Critical release is a four track collaborative project which features Mefjus, Enei, Upgrade, Chimpo and TI. It's a seriously heavyweight dance floor ready record primed for maximum destruction. Bou & Upgrade kick things off with 'Creeper' a dark and devastating stepper with menacing vocals from Chimpo. Bou then links with Enei for a taught and bouncy cut with steely drums before Mefjus joins in for the drilling, frazzled synth work of 'Wormhole.' Last of all is the 'Road Runner', another red hot riddim with expertly designed bass.

Lifestyle (Donut mix) (3:26)
Lifestyle (Serious mix) (3:31)
Review: Following their first boom-bap flavoured collaboration with Crimson Alchemist, last year's 'Storytelling', Diess Productions regulars Mister Modo and Ugly Mac Beer once again join forces with the underground MC for a similarly retro-futurist hip-hop throwdown. Crimson Alchemist's Q-Tip-esque rap sounds superb on both versions, both of which boast fat, toe-tapping beats and tons of nods towards Mister Modo and Ugly Mac Beer's turntablist roots. The A-side 'Donut Mix' is the slightly bouncier of the two takes, with tidy organ motifs and sweeping synth-strings, while the flipside 'Serious Mix' revolves around some killer horn samples and a descending bassline.

DJ Romain - "All Day, All Night"
Urban Soul - "What Do I Gotta Do"
Bassmental - "It's The Music"
Review: Digging into their vaults for the original real deal when it comes to bumping garage house, King Street know the time is right for jams of this vintage to be revisited. DJ Romain's "All Day, All Night" keeps the vibe feverish with incessant vocal samples over the irrepressible beat and a gorgeous swell of pads, while Urban Soul get more, er, soulful with the honey coated vocals and smooth organ tones of "What I Gotta Do". The last cut is given over to one of Kerri Chandlers' early ventures with some collaborators, Bassmental's "It's The Music". It's a moody jam with enough edge to reach beyond the glut of happy-go-lucky garage tunes and now is a marvellous chance to pick it up in pristine condition.

Review: Daje Funk serves up a big slice of high-grade weaponry for working DJs here with the ninth installment of disco. It is a various artists affair that opens with the rolling rhythm section and funky horns of Ronny Hammond's 'Keep On Groovin.' Shit Hot Soundsystem get a slight re-edit from De Gama but their 'Woah' sure will hit the spot with its retro funky samples, chunky drums and expansive vocal. Umberto - "The American Dream Plague" (5:02)
Alessandro Parisi - "Calamitas Calamitatum" (4:57)
Vercetti Technicolor - "Athens 430BC" (5:14)
Review: The first release from Minimal Rome in some time sees label boss Valerio Lombardozzi curate a mini album of dramatically charged power electronics themed around "the silence and the noises of the plague". Lombardozzi naturally features under his Heinrich Dressel alias, and is complemented by solo contributions from Giallo Disco founders Antoni Maiovvi and Vercetti Technicolour along with Alessandro Parisi and Umberto. Fans of cinematic synth heavy soundscapes are probably licking their lips right now, and the five tracks do not disappoint. Dressel's opening "La Peste" is almost yearning in its widescreen deployment of synths, whilst "Spitalfields 1665" from Maiovvi is a more forceful arrangement. Not Not Fun regular Umberto is a more stripped back, restrained mood with "The American Dream Plague" whilst Parisi's "Calamitas Calamitatum" is full on Giallo dancefloor horror and perhaps our favourite here!

This one kicks off with Hunter/Game & U S H N U's collaboration 'Reload' which is an electric cut with bright synth lines shimmering about the mix next to thunderous claps and dark future vocals. Review: The Manzo Edits label continues to do good work early in its life with a fourth volume of edits from various fine studio craftsmen. Jamaimoi's 'Ici C'est Toujours Les Vacances' opens up with some big disco loops, smart filters and feelgood drums then it's down into dry, sleazy dubbed-out territory with Unison Apollo's 'Belgian Mambo'. Review: Tenebreuse Musique's run of deliciously dark electro continues to entice here with a fine 12" packed with various artist heat. Konerytmi kicks off by serving up the first two tunes: 'Kristallilasi' is all twitchy synths and roaming, rugged bass. 'Zodiac Antonov' then cuts loose on a much more busy and restless tip with slapping drum funk and visceral synth patterns. It's all deep and bubbly from Dexterous Numerics before HBK1 explores a bright and edgy world of refracted melody and glassy-snares. Umwelt closes down with a pair of beauties - first the pixelated melodies of 'Unusual Activities' and then the much more dark and caustic 'System Decay.'

Many of them are hard to find or totally out of print, but labels like Roots Vibration have done a fine job of bring them back into the game. This time out it is Hands & Hearts that serve up his 'Ten Thousand Of Them.' It's a timeless roller with fat drums that sit perfectly with the even fatter bass. On the first side of Trust XY2 you have a true force to be reckoned with in the form of Microthol X Ultradyne with the sinister Detroit computer funk of 'Hostile Invasion' (Land Of Injustice mix) followed by the inimitable Peder Mannerfeldt's industrial-edged reconstruction of Clatterbox's 'Semi-Automatic'. Review: San Francisco, Bay Area and Seattle-based label From 0-1 shows us that those regions are about more than hip hop, Dirtybird-house and grunge with this new various artists collection. Operator kicks off with the dubby techno rhythms of 'Enceladus Outpost' which has freaky synths squirming about in its midst. Ideal for filling any holes in your collection, the likes of Uptown Funk Empire's Pharoah Saunders cover "Freedom", Manmademusic's gospel-level "Circles", Eddie C's tweaking, freaking drum funk "What It Is", Stacy and Peven's stuttering funk "Body Jerkin" still slap and tickle just as stylishly and smoothly as they did when Marcel first prised them from the editor's clutches... In that regard, and with the legacy he leaves, he joins the ranks of many other reggae legends. This long-awaited release originates from a recording session a decade ago at Backyard Studio UK, and since then it has lay patiently awaiting completion. Taken way before time, he was one of leading voice men in the European sound system scene and was a prolific writer to boot. His socially and politically aware vocals are sorely missed but this one serves as a timely reminder. 'No Like We' muses on Babylon oppression and escaping it through the almighty. Seba's sense of space and dynamics rekindle elements of Schnauss' Ethereal 77 alter ego as the pair wile out cosmically. "M7" is a pristine dream roller with several atmospheric layers wrapped over gentle synth bass plucks and a classically rolling drum arrangement. "Interstate" is a much more direct and contemporary piece with its precision plucked elements and off-beat acidic flurries. Review: This debut release drops with a bang. Four Epic dancefloor tracks that have been cained by not only the Lifted artists, but also the likes of Pendulum, Goldie, Dieselboy, Chase & Status, Subfocus, Calyx, Teebee and Noisia. Spor brings "Knock You Out". He is one of the most technical producers the scene has to offer - euphoric pads and evolving percussion flow into an electro industrial drone of organic, breathing bass and pounding beats. Grunge for drum & bass heads. Teebee said: "Knock You down is peak-time dancefloor destruction, classy sassy and damn sexy....sure player for months". "Glock Party" allow Evol Intent to prove that they're still at the peak of their game. Techno-industrial atmospherics keep us on edge before a vicious drop leads into a thugged-out, weight onslaught of oscillating breaks and bass. Goldie said: "Been smacking this tune all around the world, and the reaction has been mental." Ewun brings a sound like no other with "Screw Up", a unique slice of electro gangster sleaze. Beats jerk around us as the bass fizzes, warps and pops in and out of sequence with the no-holds barred vocal. Subfocus said: "This is some fresh sounding darkside funk from Ewun. Miss this and miss out". Unknown Error's "Sucker Punch" has an orchestral arrangement that builds anticipation throughout the intro, constructing an uplifting atmosphere, which collapses into savage manipulated bass stabs for a ruthless epic drop. Concord Dawn said: "Sucker Punch goes down hard like a hungry hooker, every time it drops it leaves the dancefloor with a disgusted smile."

Review: St Petersberg's Dobro label is noted not just for the quality and playability of its funky house and disco re-edits, but also for its value for money. This, their seventh release, is another great example, with no less than six floorfillers included on one 12", each bringing their own individual mood to the table. 'Flowers Festival' from Sun Rhythms has throbbing organs and fruity keys, topped off by a gorgeous Russian vocal. DJ Merci's 'Timetable' goes for chunky rave pianos and Fairlight stabs, lending it an 80s Italo-disco feel, before Ground Plane Aerial's 'Transition SP' closes the side with slap bass and stripped down house vibe that echoes some of Roule Records' more accessible moments. Side two VIGI's 'I Am You', is the most memorable of the whole package, with its idiosyncratic female vocal weaving a magical spell around the listener, before we finish off with a double whammy of Monny Me's swirling stringfest 'The Name Of The Game' and the parping horns and strutting groove of Ugly Frankie's 'Free Alcohol Shit', the latter including a bewitching and unexpected piano solo. Great work all round.

It's a versatile instrument in the right hands, and there's no question in our minds that the producer in question here has the right hands. Offering three snapshots of a mind evidently packed with far-reaching, varied ideas, the musicality is surprising considering the process and the concepts at play utterly breathtaking.

From '2 Good 4 Me''s manipulated-yet-deep drum patterns, reversing in and out in a playful way while being cast in the dim light of a rainy, moody overhead arrangement, to the stepping, shuffle-inducing 'Almost Man', and its jazz-infused, candlelit vocal sections, this is quite possibly the most sophisticated electronic music you'll hear in some time.

Rip It Off (5:26)
How's Your Father (5:57)
Review: New label U - Bend debuted back in September with a tidy Balearic 12" and promised that it would "bridge the gap between acid cougars and the namaste death cult." It is the eponymous production team that takes charge of this 12" again and again the vibe is Balearic. 'Rip It Off' starts off with some syrupy and sugary rhythms that are laid back and funky in their own way. Steamy vocals and acidic liens drive to take things higher and on the flip 'How's Your Father' brings some more laid back cool, this time with acoustic guitar strums and cosmic pads.

Jah Warrior - "Rougher Dub" (3:49)
Review: Seafront International returns with some classic roots sounds from U Brown with a dub from Jah Warrior. Recorded at Conscious Sounds studio in London 2001, the sounds are stripped down to raw bass and drum dynamics by producer Jah Warrior who was clearly intent on allowing his work to be a personal platform for U Brown to offer up his own lyrical expressions and his musical messages. It's a track delivered with energy and serious focus and will sound best nice and loud.

Review: The Juno review team is not afraid to admit a lack of familiarity with U-Ka before the release of their debut album Supernova, but we're happy to have discovered this pair of disconauts from in the Free Hanseatic City of Bremen as the album was a cosmic wonder. It's already been complemented by one round of high profile remixes but Groovitron really spoil us with a second that's just as good! A record featuring the collective talents of Idjut Boys, Frisvold & Lindbaek, Above Machine's SLO and Seahawks is likely to pique the interest of any self respecting disco punk and you won't be disappointed with their efforts here. The 'Grande Salle' remix of the album's title track from Idjut Boys is an obvious highlight, with a stripped back dubby house groove allowing the space for a wonderfully warm arpeggiated synth line to shine. Frisvold & Lindbaek set the delayometer to 15 on their killer refix of "Farewell" whilst the B Side offers a slightly more horizontal take on U-Ka's work from SLO and Seahawks.

Review: The emergent Swiss label Rora label has thus far built up an identity around a core of lesser-known artists committed to exploration within the realms of functional house and techno, and this time around U-More has been drafted in to deliver the goods following turns on Cabaret and Chelsea Hotel. The tones are quite diverse, reaching from the bouncy submersion of "Ngen" through to the more upfront techno loops of "Bipolar", while "Pleura" takes a path less travelled into restrained and hypnotic minimal. In each case U-More takes to the task of lean and mean dancefloor tackle with a distinctive, slickly-produced style.

Review: U-More's minimal house swagger injected a new era of mystique and tension into the genre, an aspect of the category that was missing in more recent times. While the majority of his music has come out on his own U-More label, the fledgling Sakadat have picked him up for this new three-tracker and placed his rhythmic glitches back on our shelves. "Hello Kitty" is so stripped of vital elements that the tune could almost be played in an ambient set, but the lead track "Biorhythm" wastes no time in providing us with a little more 'umph' around the beats and the low-end. "Versatile" ties this slice of devious funk off with a glitchy, watery kind of tech-dub built to be heard loud and on decent speakers.

Review: Ever tapping into the Perlon legacy of super-reduced house wares, U-More moves on from self-released business to join So Inagawa and Binh on Cabaret with subliminal beats for subconscious minds. "The Slope" unfolds on the A side like a prime Baby Ford & Zip joint, riding a restrained but eminently funky drum pattern and revelling in hushed pad tones to create a dark but sensual atmosphere. On the flip "Down In Down" lets the synths do the talking as a robotic melodic phrasing blurts out an intricate message around a paper-thin beat, before "The Shaft" bounces off into a skippy great blue yonder of deepest house.

Review: Strap in for some high octane techno thrills here counters of young Parisian artist Ines, aka u.r.trax. He has been playing drums since aged five and that shows on the powerful patterns he lays down on every track. Veering from visceral and violent to more loving and hypnotic, these are unrelenting warehouse rave tracks designed to move to most serious of crowds. 'Brain Goes 404' is the most hurried and urgent of the lot with its slapping hits and alarm like sirens. 'Conf6' is a distorted, foggy banger and 'The Key Of Overdose' then takes off with its more heady but just as high tempo styles.

Review: After a series of successful grooves on Bitter Moon, Matteo Pepe's Uabos makes himself known on the perennial Bordello A Parigi. It's the perfect fit: Pepe's uplifting analogue soul thrusts with a sense of positivity and musicality that tips a respectful hat to the legacy of Italo. The ageless consistency runs throughout smoothly as we're flung from the barbed flickers of acid on "Mystic Force" to the sci-fi imagery and emotion of "City Woods". Elsewhere "Karmic Souls" flexes back to 1990 with its rolling broken drums while "Copacabana" will have everyone reliving the 80s - even if they weren't even born that decade.

Review: First released on green vinyl in 2008 and almost impossible to find since, "Synthetic Substitution" is an instrumental cover version of a celebrated Melvin Gill tune by The Undercover Brother, AKA Kenny Dope collaborator Victor Piagneri. The A-side "Instrumental Mix" re-creates the original version's famous groove, layering it with Clavinet lines, fluid pianos and spacey synth solos not evident on Gill's early '70s original. Arguably even better is the "Melody Mix", which adds in some fine George Benson style jazz guitar solos while retaining the familiar breakbeats, bassline and pianos. If you missed out first time around, we'd recommend copping a copy.

'Aggressive Starter' sets a bold tone and explores the interplay of broken beats and techno with layers of kicks and distorted synths that offer an intense emotional release. 'Piggyback Ride' plunges into a chaotic yet danceable realm divided into two sections that resolve with raw energy. On the B-side, ['Radical Jazz' brings fierce, unbound techno and is driven by a powerful bassline while last but not least, 'Atomic Moog' offers a deep, spacious track, perfect for after-hours and blending dubby grooves with a refreshing, refined touch.

Review: Though Ubre Blanca is a relatively new concern, those with a firm grasp of recent Glaswegian music history will be familiar with the project's two protagonists Joel Stone and Andy Brown. The former was a founding member of the art-punk troupe SHITDISCO who caused a notable racket with their clutch of releases on Fierce Panda circa 2005-07. Brown meanwhile was drummer in Divorce, a similarly minded and recently disbanded group whose output surfaced on Merok, Optimo Music and Night School Records amongst others. A new side to their respective musical palettes is shown with Ubre Blanca, seemingly named after a breed of Cuban cow, with their Polygon Mountain EP revelling in 'horror synth jams' that pay clear homage to Goblin, Carpenter et al. The live drumming from Brown offers an added dimension to a quartet of productions that have the soaring synth lines on lock down, with the twelve minute title track an obvious highlight. A superb record from an under-valued label.

Review: The UB's bring their particular brand of funk to this steamy and fiery new 7" on the Fraternity label. It finds them in edit mode and first up reworking 'Stone Fox Chase'. It has some country-style harmonica built into the raw beats and plenty of psyched-out guitar lines that bring Americana vibes to the percolating rhythms. On the flip is their edit of 'Delirium' which is a totally different proposition - smooth funk grooves with busy chords and icy hi-hats. It's one that looks to the stars and crushes there on a feelgood vibe you hope never ends.

Review: Entrepot Records is a Brussels based imprint, founded in 2014 by UC Beatz - who some of you may know from his Underluxxe digital label The idea here is simple: to release raw house beats on wax. For their eighth edition the label chez himself takes on duties, with some fine slo-mo house grooves - perfectly suited to late summer nights. The A side features the lo-slung boogie down vibes of "Rainbows", but the real dancefloor burners belong to the flipside. The looped-up disco inferno "Playground" is covered in just the right amount of dust and grit that would make Phil Weeks stand up and notice, while the sultry "Nocturne" is a crafty edit of a fine vintage track that's rather familiar indeed.

This time we focus on the Collective Cuts sub-label of her 803 Crystal Grooves, which hits release number five with UC Beatz. He offers four cuts of thumping house music with raw edges, subtle classic samples and raw dance floor bite. The nastiness of 'Wild Horse' is particularly appealing.

Review: Newcomer vinyl label Bare Bones deliver a deep-dished diavola 12" of deep house, channelling four individual bits from Uc Beatz, Flaze, Adam Nahalewicz and Slur. With a view to showcasing the variety of styles that the label intend to put out with future releases, this sultry slice of wax grows progressively more experiemental and broken; Slur's 'Uncaged' is closer to Dego than Larry Heard. Back in 2020 the pari finally hooked up in the studio and cooked up a mix of influences and material including French spoken words, Turkish vocals, big bass and Latin flutes. They are fresh sources for a house record and lend the EP a unique vibe over heavy beats, more loopy French tough grooves and in the case of 'Lillio Scratch' twitchy tech house.

Review: Kyoto crew UCND (which comprises of bassist UCON, producer KND and a rotating cast of contributing musicians) lay down a marker for their upcoming Terra Incognita album on Japonica with this EP that features a rather fine DJ Nature remix! The album version of "Morondova" sets the tone nicely, with supple double bass from UCON driving the groove and a taut breakbeat lead rhythm encouraging your hips to slip into action. The title track leads the listener into more abstract hi tech jazz territory which will appeal to fans of Archie Pelago whilst DJ Nature engages head nod mode with his rugged beat down take on "Morondava". A similar loose vibe runs through UCND's final track "Nosy Boraha" which is perhaps the most noodly cut here.

Review: Tresor is a titanic techno brand that has very much had a large say in how the genre has sounded over the last few decades. The German club and label now welcomes Parisian artist UFO95 into the fold with his Backward Improvement EP which draws on elements of all the genre's many niches from London to Detroit to Berlin. 'Cogitor' is thumping and wried up with warped lines, 'Sexual Tension' has a more seductive sound with a rubbery and funky bassline and 'Fragment' then brings panel-beating loops for peak time showdowns. There is pure sci-fi atmosphere to the bells and the sonorous synths of 'Solar' and 'Gargk' closes down with a glitchy and ambient-laced breakbeat monster. Great variation makes this a useful EP.
