Cold Blooded

Cold Blooded
Surge
Review: This is the dark side of dubstep at its unsettling, nerve wracking, best. Kryptic Minds and Youngsta load some serious weight into their bass for their "Cold Blooded" release on Kryptic’s Osiris imprint. "Cold Blooded" and "Surge" both utilise slow paced, eerie and menacing atmospheres but drive them forward with frighteningly heavy bass. The deft production skills of both playas make this an underground masterpiece.

Dubplate Master
Cat: SCRUB 007. Rel: 23 May 13
Dubplate Master (feat Yellowman & Mr Williamz)
Ram Dance Faster (feat Yellowman)
Ram Jam Slow Up
Review: Hot on the heels of his ace new album Brand New Bangarang, comes this rather timely release on Scrub A Dub. Stretching out the bounciest bass this side of Babylon, it's an instant crowd smasher. Especially when Yellowman and Mr Williamz are letting loose with their lyrical dancehall fire. Fancy a slower, sexier jam? Head for "Ram Jam Slow Up". It's as smoochy as it is subby.

Freak
Freak (translucent smoke vinyl 12")
Cat: WPR 057R. Rel: 24 Jul 24
Calibration (4:20)
Freak (4:40)
OK Cold (4:08)
Negative Released (feat Orlando) (5:09)
Review: Get your 'Freak' on! White Peach are reissuing this doozy of 12" from Yoofee and not before time, too. Originally released in 2021, and still sounding years ahead of the pack, 'Calibration' takes the lead in all its bouncy, steppy glory. It's backed up by plenty more heat... The four-to-the-floor switches on 'Freak', the depth plunge subby funk of 'OK Cold' and the super creepy graveyard gravy finale 'Negative Released'. Positive release.

The Eraser (remixes)
Cat: XLT 337. Rel: 13 Mar 08
The Clock (Surgeon remix)
Harrowdown Hill (The Bug remix)
Cymbal Rush (The Field Late Night Essen & Trinken remix)
Review: Last but certainly not least we have The Bug's remix of 'Harrowdown Hill' with downbeat skippy dubstep beats
and an eerie ambiance. Techno don Surgeon's version of 'The Clock' is a pumping dancefloor masterpiece.
And The Field strip down 'Cymbal Rush' into a late night, hypnotic deep techno ambient track.

And It Rained All Night (Burial remix)
Skip Divided (Modeselektor remix)
Analyse (Various remix)
Review: This XL EP kicks off with dubstep man-of-the-moment, Burial's mighty and heavy remix of 'And It Rained All Night'. Modeselektor offer a dark and moody rework of 'Skid Divided'. And finally Various Production remake 'Analyse' in an edgy dubstep style.

Split Minds
Cat: TEMPA 111. Rel: 08 Nov 16
Split Minds (4:42)
Redshift (4:13)
Review: Scene sergeant Youngsta returns with his first full release in years. Tag-teaming with rising producer Cimm, the vibe is deep, roomy and constructed with a stately, unhurried alien funk. Every element considered and fine-tuned, both tracks take us deep into a meditative mindset without ever pressing the snooze button: "Split Minds" rolls with bass tones so warm they almost bounce while "Redshift" takes us into an even dubbier pasture with some great attention paid to the sporadic rhythm elements. Beautiful.

Bongo Remixes
Cat: WPR 014. Rel: 25 Oct 16
Bongo (3:53)
Bongo (Hi5Ghost remix) (4:29)
Bongo (Kahn & Neek remix) (3:39)
Bongo (Impey Text 66668 Bar remix) (3:50)
Review: Following last year's celebration of his seminal "Pulse X", White Peach return to the don's small-but-perfectly formed vaults for an equally grand take on the legendary bounce-bass 4x4 cut from 2002. Short, sharp and such a joy to mix and cut, it remains just as crisp now as it did 14 years ago. But that's not to say a few contemporisations wouldn't go amiss... Hi5Ghost retains the depth plunge bass and 808 ricochet hits, Kahn & Neek throw in all the glitches and switches on their take while Astral Black's prize bang clapper brings SMS sexy back with his sub-heavy slight jukey version. Drink it up.

McDonalds (remixes)
Cat: DB 299. Rel: 10 Mar 23
McDonalds (EPROM remix) (1:54)
McDonalds (Barclay Crenshaw remix) (2:31)
Review: It's not often we pass on much trappy EDM to listeners at Juno, but Eprom is a special case, having made a name for himself for pushing the glossy post-dubstep trap style that made many artists like him famous. At the same time, Barclay Crenshaw (Claude VonStroke) is another name in the EDM world whose direction isn't quite the same as Eprom's, but nevertheless shares a space with the former artist for having also remixed Yung Skrrt's wilfully trashy hit 'McDonalds' of late. As both artists have dropped their respective cuts in many a DJ set all over the world, Skrrt's label DIRTYBIRD have now orchestrated a meeting of the two minds - not least to mention this juicy vinyl compilation of the two remixes.

Shell Them Again (feat Zed Bias & Safire remix)
Cat: IFGGG 005. Rel: 01 Jul 24
Shell Them Again (3:06)
Shell Them Again (dub mix) (3:07)
Shell Them Again (Zed Bias & Safire remix) (3:22)
Shell Them Again (acappella) (2:50)
Review: Garage powerhouse Zed Bias is back with more old school garage brilliance with the new single 'Shell Them Again' featuring the vocals of Yung Saber and Brakeman. The original has plenty of retro signifiers from the low-end wobble to the withering synth effects, plus crisp hits and jostling drums. After the dub mix comes a remix from Zed himself alongside Safire which is much more dirty and raw. The beats are broken up so the track takes on a dubstep quality as the low-end oscillations bring the weight and drums hit with more force. Finally, the acappella closes out this fresh 12" on IFG.

Review: From the compilation series that brought the scene its very name, 'Dubstep Allstars' presents a clash between two of the most influential dubstep DJs, Youngsta and Hatcha. Taking one CD each, these dubplate masters present the finest in upfront beats. From Skream to Digital Mystikz, Loefah to D1, these are the freshest sounds to come out of the London dubstep scene in 2006. Croydon-based Hatcha began DJing back while it was all UK garage and witnessed the birth of Dubstep circa 2000. But it was as Forward resident in around 2003 that he personally changed the course of the Dubstep sound, ushering in a new era with his upfront and exclusive dubplate selection. Also a Forward resident, Youngsta's sound really coalesced early in 2005, when his direction of ultra dark, skunked out "halfstep" dubstep defied dance floor expectations and smothered headz in dread bass. His pinpoint-sharp mixing and visionary selection marked him out as a master DJ. Together Hatcha and Youngsta are a formidable force and 'Dubstep Allstars Vol. 4' sees them in heavyweight form, from dub skankers to bass wobblers, dark halfsteppers to percussive rump shakers, bass is in the space. This fourth instalment of the 'Dubstep Allstars' mix series from Tempa follows the success of Kode 9 & Spaceape’s Volume 3. Reviews/editorial in IDJ, Wire, DJ, Mixmag, Knowledge, FACT, Undercover, Plan B, Pitchfork, One Week To Live, ATM, Uncut , Mojo, NME.
