Kajyadhi Fu Bushi
Kajyadhi Fu Bushi (limited translucent yellow vinyl 7" + insert)
Cat: EM 11762. Rel: 19 Jan 23
Kajyadhi Fu Bushi (4:39)
Kajyadhi Fu Bushi (Visible Cloaks remix) (4:54)
Review: 'Kajyadhi-fu bushi' is actually a Japanese wedding song. It was first written and recorded in 1977 by Jazz man Jun Arasaki and his Nine Sheep collective. They did it in one take - which is the one you hear here - across an array of unusual (at least here in the west) instruments such as five sanshin, four winds, piano, bass, percussion and drums. It's a sombre, slow-motion lullaby that is imbued with subtle joy. Next to the original, a Visible Cloaks remix up the ambient beauty and makes it feel more cosmic and expansive.

Review: Record Store Day sometimes gets a lot of criticism for the sheer volume of re-releases people didn't seem to ask for. In the case of Visions of Dawn, nothing could be further from the truth. A forgotten, or at least long-lost Brazilian acid folk masterpiece, the record was first recorded in Paris circa 1976, but then quickly seemed to vanish into the ether many of the tracks sound like they emerged from.
In 2009, it was 'rediscovered' and immediately became a cult classic - again. Melding samba, Bossa Nova, trippy moods and gorgeous instrumentation, it has the ability to make you feel transported and transformed, as though offering an earshot of what another world might sound like. Or at least the other side of our own. Listen and not be transfixed, we challenge you.

Review: Acclaimed South African folk singer Vusi Mahlasela joined forces with singer songwriter Norman Zulu as well as the superb Swedish jazz and soul collective Jive Connection for this album back in 2002. It was thought to be a lost recording until it recently showed up and now gets fully revived by Strut. There are strong political links between these countries which no doubt adds weight to this musical link up. It is a great exchange of cultures from parables to laments on child abuse to tunes that fuse reggae, jazz and post-punk with township styles.

Review: Over six albums of ethereal folk-tinged serenades, Marissa Nadler has forged a formidable reputation for herself as an artist whose delicacy and restraint are balanced out by a cinematic sensibility and a formidable heartfelt clout. Something like a collection of short stories in song form interweaved by a common aesthetic, 'Strangers' feels like the most potent and affecting statement that Nadler has thus far created, with Lynchian atmospherics rubbing shoulders with dreamlike melody and her mellifluous, tones to fashion a beguiling tapestry of nocturnal beauty. Fans of Mazzy Star and Julee Cruise, be advised in extremis.

Review: This San Franciscan singer-songwriter combines pithy portraits of the whys and wherefores of 21st century life with a beguiling, hypnagogic sound that evokes the slowcore of Bedhead and Codeine just as much as it does the taut, lo-fi sounds of The Breeders and Liz Phair. Yet for all these '90s references, there's a heavy-lidded charm and a rich character to Nelson's songcraft that gives 'Fast Moving Clouds' a bohemian charm and emotive appeal that dwells in the here and now, replete with psychedelic ornamentation. Raw, tastefully understated and casually stylish, it possesses an appeal way beyond the dimly-lit bars and thrift stores these songs inhabit.

Review: For all her otherworldly talents, even hardcore fans of Joanna Newsom will likely be relieved to hear that 'Divers' marks a very slight move back from the artistic brink compared to 2010's 'Have One On Me', an exhausting triple-album embarrassment of riches which few ever made it though in one go. Yet there's no hint of compromise on the deliriously thrilling 'Divers', despite its slightly more concise approach - the elegant yet baroque wordplay, ornate and innovative arrangements and Newsom's unique voice are all present and correct - yet more, these emotive and engaging ditties may mark the most accessible thing this iconoclastic and mercurial artist has thus far summoned from the ether.

Review: Nico's Marble Index was the first album to establish the German musician's home in the avant-garde; the story of the fashion model turned "legitimate" artist is as old as time, yet is rarely told today. In contrast to her first album, Chelsea Girl, which consisted almost entirely of pop chansons, Nico's sophomore LP here tracks nicely with her working introduction to John Cale in his harmonium era, drawing inspiration primarily from modern European classical music, not three-minute hookcraft. Long out of print, this slow-burner of a critical classic now hears a worthy reissue via Domino.

Review: As part of a new looking back on German art rocker Nico's esteemed career by the indie label Domino, Desertshore chronologically follows The Marble Index, and is her third album, following the prior project's establishing her as an avant-garde artist with one foot in the mainstream, in stark defiance of the the prejudiced poo-poohs that followed her first (baroque pop) album, Chelsea Girl. Desertshore is more of a reconciliation of her prior two projects, bringing back the initial western pop sensibility while now firmly basking in a newfound weirdness-and-she-knows-it. From the opening dark waves of 'Janitor Of Lunacy' to the piano-balladic injection of sadness that is 'Afraid', this is another avant-garde masterpiece by the musician, never justifiably passed over.

Review: The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band are well known for getting their sleeves rolled up and down in the muck, symbolising the exact line of work that a covers band does: the dirty kind. Exemplary of this is their new rendition of the greatest hits of Bob Dylan, filtered through the lens of the country rock musical traditions found in and around Nashville, Tennessee. Special guests include Rosanne Cash and Jason Isbell, producing an affecting and riveting take on Dylan's expression.

Review: 50 years on from the recording of Leo Nocentelli's Another Side album and it still resonates. To mark the occasion it gets a special first ever release on Light in the Attic featuring all new, unreleased and never before heard tunes. It was the guitarist's first ever album and it features Allen Toussaint, James Black and George Porter Jr. and Zigaboo Modeliste of The Meters. It was recorded at Cosimo Matassa's Jazz City Studio in New Orleans sometime in the early seventies but was somehow lost. It features some of his most tender and vulnerable sounds and is only being heard because it somehow survived Hurricane Katrina and was discovered 2000 miles away in Southern California.

Review: Patrick McDermott and Barry Walker turned some heads with 2020's Roped In, taste-making publications hurling positive criticism at it with gusto. Three years or thereabouts on and Long Cool World is the much-anticipated follow up, and again wants to woo you with beautiful, serene instrumental folk. Songs that speak to a natural aspect of the human identity, in more ways than one.
While the first record was recorded in isolation from one another, two heads digitally collaborating, this time round the duo's second joint was put together in person, in one place. The impact is that things feel decidedly more personal, live, perhaps earthy, although arrangements still straddle terrestrial and cosmic. A kind of journeyman take on ambient that will resonate with a multitude of ears.
