Juan Laya & Jorge Montiel - "Better Living" (feat Stuart Lisbie)
Hypnotic Brass Ensemble - "Brass In Africa"
Review: Serious funk vibes abound on this repress from 2011. London duo Juan Laya and Jorge Montiel lay down a stripped-back bass n' breakbeat combo allowing full emphasis on the tightly plucked bass, tight horn noodles and chanty Jay Kay flavoured singing. Think Kraak & Smaak circa Boogie Angst with just a bit more trad JBs style funk. Flip for an equally funky adventure courtesy of the Hypnotic Brass Ensemble. Giving the Hot 8 Brass Band a run for their money, it's a sweeping series of dreamy horns that can't help but suck you deep into the mix.

Review: DJ Amir has long been a fan of "The Jupiter Effect", the sole album by multi-instrumentalist Larry Rose and his backing band of Dutch and American session musicians, and it was on his suggestion that BBE put together this fully re-mastered reissue. The album was first released in 1978 - the year it was recorded in an Amsterdam studio - and offers a unique take on jazz-fusion that variously doffs a cap to smooth grooves, jazz-funk, Steely Dan, blues, Latin and Cajun rhythms and the hard-to-pigeonhole soul sound of Rotary Connection. It's a warm, attractive and hugely enjoyable collection of songs that have aged remarkably well, making this edition one of the reissues of the year so far.

Disco Documentary: Full Of Funk

I'm In Love
We Gonna Stay For The Party
Talking About Music
Disco Lover
Sahara/Chains Of Love
Hang On Baby
When The Heart Decides
Reach Out My Hand
Loving Feeling (dance mix)
Loving Feeling (instrumental)
Review: Pure Ghanaian gold, Disco Documentary: Full Of Funk was a rare private press released in 1979 never to be released again... Until now. Dusting off the long lost tapes with due care and attention, BBE have kindly reminded us that disco had much wider impact than the US and Europe. Nana Love's slightly nasal tones are instantly alluring, but it's the clam-tight musicianship that really bites. Big Bernard Edwards bass, shiny guitar twangs, extensive organ noodling and vibrant Afrofunk horns galore, this is a truly stunning document.

Belle Isle Daze (Lost alternative mix) (4:11)
Review: One of the most remarkable things about Saturday Night Special, the 1975 debut album by the Lyman Woodard Organisation, is how two musicians - accompanied by various sessions drummers - could make such a rich and layered set. It still impresses that Lyman Woodard and Ron English could create so many superbly evocative and cinematic jazz-fusion workouts almost on their own. The set has long been regarded as one of the best musical commentaries on a particularly low period in Detroit's post-industrial history, and many of the tracks are suitably poignant - even those clearly aimed at the dancefloor. Critically, this reissue deals with one of the major issues with original copies - their poor pressing - by stretching the same tracks over two slabs of wax, rather than one.
