William Alfred Sergeant - "Toy Piano Mantra" (3:57)
Paul Simpson - "Ghosts Of The Karelia Forest" (3:09)
Review: Feral Child reissues an earlier 45 that allegedly “came and went in a day” on first release: a coruscating pair of instrumental folk gems from Will Sergeant and Paul Simpson. Each artist sharing one side respectively, ‘Toy Piano Mantra / Ghosts Of The Karelia Forest’ was only released last year in 2023, and indeed became little less than an insta-cop; original pressings still go for hundreds. Sergeant’s ‘Toy Piano Mantra’ is culled from the English’s guitarist and Echo & The Bunnymen songwriter’s 2020 album Things Inside, and is a wilful exercise in acoustic guitar and harmonium composition, where the artist avows his own aversion to acoustic instruments in usual favour of the electric guitar. Paul’s side features the formerly unreleased ‘Ghosts Of The Karelia Forest’, a complementarily slow-building and haunting solo piano piece from the Wild Swans and Teardrop Explodes keyboardist. Now reissued on transparent vinyl 7”, you can be certain this one will fly like the first editions.

Sexbeat (instrumental) (3:37)
Review: Sexbeat are the latest gem you're about to fall in love with from the lost generation of punk, Now Wave and Neo-Goth. We only wish there was more information we could share about them, other than the fact they hit hard and manage to straddle the lines between raw and nasty and strangely romantic and melodic. It's rousing stuff that wants us to sing along while getting spat in the face because the front row is so close to the stage and the vocals are delivered with such resolute aggression. On this self-titled A-sider, they launch from the starting blocks with all the energy and atmosphere of an era that's sadly now confined to history, rolling bassline and driving drums immediately gunning for your attention, nodding to the likes of Surf Nazis Must Die and Aufrichtiges Zappa.

A Distorted Reality Is Now A Necessity To Be Free
Review: The upcoming repress of Elliott Smith's 'Pretty (Ugly Before)' b/w 'A Distorted Reality Is Now A Necessity To Be Free' offers a poignant listen back into the final chapter of his career. Originally released as a single in August 2003, these tracks were part of the recording sessions for From A Basement On The Hill, Smith's acclaimed posthumous album. This 7" release holds a special place in his discography as it was the last to be released during his lifetime. Suicide Squeeze Records has announced a limited repress of 500 copies on tri-color vinylimustard, baby blue, and coke bottle greenimaking it a nice looking collectors item. Both songs capture the brilliance of Smith's deeply resonant voice, which spoke to a generation grappling with disillusionment and heartache. 'Pretty (Ugly Before)' and 'A Distorted Reality Is Now A Necessity To Be Free' stand as a powerful statement by Smith's to articulate the complexities of the human experience with raw, emotional clarity. This release not only preserves the legacy of Elliott Smith but also reintroduces his timeless music to a new audience.

Review: If you can't make it to the Kazakh steppe to watch the launch of the actual Soyuz spacecraft, the next best thing is to immerse yourself in this spacey, dreamy, blissed out psychedelic instrumental music with a 70s AOR touch and send your imagination on a voyage. Minsk collective Soyuz have some seriously strong musical chops and subsequently can bring in guest appearances from the sensational Biel Basile of the rising Brazilian group Sessa and Anthony Ferraro (Toro Y Moi, Astronauts, Etc.). They fit into the mixes beautifully, sounding like they've been part of the group their whole lives. It's a real gem of a release and a likely future collectible 7" from the Brighton-based independent label Mr Bongo.

The Wild Ones (4:04)
Modern Boys (4:01)
Review: Suede's 'The Wild Ones', released as a single in November 1994, is widely regarded as a defining moment in the band's career. Featured on Dog Man Star, the track shows Brett Anderson and Bernard Butler at their creative peak, with Anderson often calling it his favorite Suede song. The haunting ballad stands out for its atmospheric, semi-acoustic production, enhanced by delicate orchestration, giving the song a timeless, melancholic feel. Anderson's emotive vocal delivery complements the lush arrangement, creating a poignant reflection on lost love. The B-side, 'Modern Boys', adds further value to the single, despite not making the final Dog Man Star tracklist. 'The Wild Ones' remains one of Suede's most cherished songs, capturing a pivotal moment of artistic evolution for the band.

The Killing Of A Flash Boy (3:47)
Review: As part of the Suede30 campaign, Demon Records will release Suede's fifth, sixth, seventh and eighth singles as collectible 7" picture discs, featuring the original cover art. Among them, 'We Are The Pigs,' released on September 12, 1994, stands out as the lead single from the Dog Man Star album. The single is a great blend of Bernard Butler's dynamic riff and Brett Anderson's haunting lyrics with the sing-along chorus that has a sinister twist. The single reached number 18 on the UK charts. The B-side, 'The Killing Of A Flash Boy,' while not included on the album, is considered a lost gem by Brett Anderson, reflecting its enduring appeal.
