Eventide (14:12)
Introduction (4:42)
Happy Gamma Ray (15:13)
Review: The first release from the Axis Audiophile Series. Jeff Mills has formed an electronic jazz fusion band and this 12? is a recording of their recent performance in Kobe during the TodaysArt.JP Festival. Mills manages the decks, drums and percussion and is joined Detroit legend and Underground Resistance stalwart Gerald Mitchell (Los Hermanos/Galaxy 2 Galaxy), keyboardist Yumiko Ohno and bassist Kenji Jino. "Eventide" has the same kind of urban, uplifting soul as anything Kaidi Thatham or Mark de Clive-Lowe have made and isn't bad at all! On the flip "Happy Gamma Ray" features uplifting keys and emotive chords backed by funk bass and one of Mills' unmistakeable 909 drum machine workouts. It really seems that there's no limit to this Motor City legend's creativity which has spanned nearly 30 years and we're excited about this new chapter in the Wizard's sonic universe.

Dried Tears (7:43)
Father (4:27)
Lovely Lovely (4:02)
Contradictions (3:08)
Seeweeyah (1:00)
Review: The revitalised singer Constantine Weir, who you may know from work with Galliano, makes a welcome return with some incredibly powerful soul. It comes on his own already interesting young label Itez and opens with the yawning and sun-kissed sounds of 'Dried Tears' with aching vocals and glistening melodies. 'Father' is an imitated song with the deep lyrics allowed plenty of room to make their mark as gentle bongos and strings company a soothing rhythm. Aspirated, smoky vocals again take centre stage on 'Lovely Lovely' which is a reminisce of a romantic tryst and 'Contradictions' then has a more breezy feel and sunny disposition. 'Seeweeyah' shuts down with a powerful monologue.

On Green Dolphin Street (4:38)
Review: The always busy Record Store Day 2024 release schedule has turned up another pearler here as Ann Young and Yuki Ohno Trio's 'Speak Low' gets a special reissue on 7" courtesy of Nippon Colombia. 'Speak Low' is a cut that showcases Young's expressive vocal style in all its glory as it implodes and explodes over 100-mile-an-hour double bass and light, airy triages, hi-hats and feathery drums. On the flip is another standout vocal jazz cut 'On Green Dolphin Street' that makes this an essential cop.

Review: The celebration of this series continues with a reissue of the second installment of the legendary Christmas salsa album. Willie Colon and Hector Lavoe returned here to bring the unique sounds that made Volume I a Latin music classic. For this one, Colon and Lavoe were joined by renowned cuatro player Yomo Toro and legendary percussionists Milton Cardona and Jose Mangual Jr. Together, they crafted salsa versions of beloved Puerto Rican Christmas songs while mixing traditional musica jibara with Cuban guaguanco, son montuno and African-American jazz. It delivers on all fronts with vibrant, festive blends that bring real Puerto Rican authenticity to salsa fans worldwide.

Review: Those interested in Japanese cartoons should know Space Adventure Cobra. First broadcast in 1982, it is now considered one of the country's finest animated TV series. This triple-vinyl box set celebrates Kentano Haneda and Yuji Ono's music from the series, combining compositions featured on the show with unheard extended versions and tracks that never made the cut first time round. Musically, it's a mix of Japanese disco, sax-sporting lounge jazz, jazz-funk, neo-classical movements and eccentric interludes, all doused in layers of cosmic dust and stargazing colour. The release also comes packaged with a 12-page booklet telling the story of the series and the making of the appealing, endlessly entertaining soundtrack.

Four Units: Japanese Jazz Men Series Vol 3
Four Units (10:43)
Dull Slumber (9:24)
Scarborough Fair (7:47)
Rainbow Trout (3:24)
Black Bass (8:03)
Review: Four Units is a Japanese jazz all-star group who played together for this concert in Tokyo in 1969. The recording of it landed on Union Records in the same year and is not able for many reasons, chief amongst which is a fairly incredible cover of 'Scarborough Fair'. It's freeform, expressive and busy in true modal style, with squealing lead synths and feathered cymbals, rolling drums and edgy piano all dancing around the original sound. Other cuts veer into hard bop territory and the whole thing comes to a close in a fine blaze of glory having opened with a pair of extended epics. .

Review: In 2002, the Japanese government recognized bamboo flute maestro Hozan Yamamoto as a "living national treasure". It was in honor of his lengthy career in music, and in particular the way he championed a traditional Japanese instrument even when he was turning his hand to Western music. "Beautiful Bamboo Flute", an album first released in 1971 and almost impossible to find since, is a superb example of this. It sees him deliver haunting, emotional and life-affirming solos over funky jazz, big band and fusion backing tracks that tend towards the fresh and funky. It's an unusual blend, but also an invigorating and exciting one.

Review: An overlooked spiritual classic in two parts, Yamash'ta & The Horizon were a one-off project consisting of a hat-trick of musicians seeking to perfect their craft. In 1971, Hideakira Sakurai, Masahiko Satoh, Stomu Yamash'ta and Takehisa Kosugi gathered in Japan to perform an invite-only concert to a handful of friends. Deep and distinctive electric shamishen becomes a sonic centrepiece over the course; handled by Sakurai, the sound is haunting, like a lone voice amidst a sea of percussive nymphs. Sloshing koto, percussion and eruptions of awe from the crowd all dominate the moments of downtime; a timeless snapshot of Fluxus Japan.

Review: Unlike previous instalments in the 180g label's Wamono series, this isn't a compilation in the strictest sense of the term, but rather a retrospective. It showcases a range of killer jazz-funk and rare groove tunes recorded at Nippon Columbia studios in the mid 1970s by arranger Kiyoshi Yamaya, koto legend Toshiko Yonekawa and shakahuchi master Kifu Mitsuhashi. Highlights come thick and fast throughout, from the mellow, slow-burn lusciousness of 'Nanbu Ushioi-Uta' and the up-beat, guitar solo-laden brilliance of 'Hohai-Bushi', to the all-time Japanese jazz-funk classic that is 'Saitaro-Bushi' and the solo-laden brilliance of 'Asadoya Yunti', whose dazzling Fender Rhodes solos are reminiscent of the early '70s work of the late, great Billy Preston.

Mr Nilson
Village Festival
Review: Many of the reissues in BBE's ongoing 'J Jazz' series are obscure or little-known, but few are quite as rare as 'Song of Island', the third full-length from the Yasuhiro Kohno Trio. It was recorded live at the 'Again' jazz club, with vibraphonist Masahiro Kanno accompanying Kohno (piano) and his regular sidemen Tsutomu Numakami (bass) and Hironobu Fujisawa (drums). It was initially released as a private press LP in ludicrously limited quantities, so this first ever reissue will allow a wider audience to marvel at the magical music on show. Sun-splashed and spiritual, Kohno's compositions add dazzling piano and vibraphone work to exemplary jazz grooves, while the quartet's cover of Cole Porter's 'Love For Sale' is genuinely spellbinding and life-affirming.

Review: Ethio-jazz composer Dawit Yifru dropped a real classic when he first released his self-titled solo instrumental album. It is strictly a compilation of 11 songs that he wrote and recorded during the 70s and have since been restored and remastered from original cassettes. They helped to make him one of the most notable artists in one of the most important eras in Ethiopia's music history as he mixed up Ethiopian Chickchika music, Twist, Congolese Rumba, and Waltz styles that all represented that time in music in the Horn of Africa country. This collection is the first in a new series from Muzikawi's Archive & Research project which looks to shine a light on some of Ethiopia's most celebrated but not internationally renowned sounds.

Known for their seminal work in the 1970s jazz funk scene, the band made this one as part of a three-part series produced by Nippon Columbia that paid tribute to the majesty of one of the main instruments of Japanese traditional music, namely the koto. Divided into chapters called Sea, Hillside and Country, Yamaya brought plenty of contemporary style to these translations while integrating that with the sound of the past. This version comes with a booklet full of extra context.

Review: Larry Young was an American jazz organist, whose claim to fame lay in his use of the Hammond B3 organ in a genre context it wasn't regularly used for: post-bop. 'Unity' came out in 1965, and saw him collaborate with trumpeter Woody Shaw, saxophonist Joe Henderson, and drummer Elvin Jones. The aim was to transcend each artist's tendency towards individualism, producing a stunning mood piece that brought out the organ in a surreptitious yet noticeable context. Young's playing renders the instrument popping, bright and vibrant.

Review: As a jazz trailblazer from the 30s onwards, Lester Young's star shone bright and fast before his death in 1959. While different stages of his career (split by WWII amongst others) show different sides to the tenor sax titan's playing, there are moments of brilliance wherever you look. Le Dernier Message De Lester Young is a poignant album - the last session he recorded before he passed away, originally released that very same year. Backed up by Kenny Clarke on drums, Jimmy Gourley on guitar, Rene Urtreger on piano and Jamil Nasser on bass, Young strikes a sombre, mellow tone across this record, with his unrivalled scope for expression coming through in every blue-hued note.

Review: Japan's Koki Emura (Em Records bossman) is an incorrigible reissuer, putting out obscure and hard-to-find gems from all corners of the globe and with a distinctly elegant presentation every time. Experimental jazz musician Roland P Young has been at the centre of the Em catalogue, boasting a whopping three LPs for the label already and he's back on the map this time with a stunning new full-length of improv, experimentation and that usual charm. Apart from Isophonic Boogie Woogie, this might well be Young's craziest work to be featuring on Mr.Emura's catalogue, where brash and deranged percussion meet gorgeous acoustic treatment the whole way through. "Partenthetically", for example, could almost be played in an electronic DJ set. Highly recommended.

Review: Over the last few years, Adrian Younge has spent a lot of his time working with Ali Shaheed Muhammad legends on the essential Jazz Is Dead series of collaborative albums. Here he finally steps out on his own once more - albeit with assistance from a range of musicians and vocalists - with a stunning set that he describes as "an unapologetic critique, detailing the susyem and malevolent psychology that afflicts people of color". Musically, it doffs a cap to the emotive orchestration of Marvin Gaye's What's Going On, with nods to jazz-funk greats such as Bob James, spiritual jazz and the jazzy hip-hop grooves Younge has long been associated with, while the artist's own spoken word vocals are conscientious, hard-hitting and thought-provoking. In other words, it's an exceptional piece of work.

Review: Adrian Younge's new album is undoubtedly his most powerful yet. He says it "dissects the chemistry behind blind racism, using music as the medium to restore dignity and self-worth to my people." It is an unapologetic critique of the current systems that suppress people of colour and the malevolent psychology that taps into that. Musically, this is a deeply soulful record with elaborate orchestration and some top level guests. Next to the album, Younge has also made a short film (TAN) and 4-part podcast (invisible Blackness) on the same subject that make for vital listening.

Review: Adrian Younge's latest in the Something About April series is a stunning analogue opus that blends a 30-piece orchestra with breakbeats, synth work and Brazilian psychedelia. It has reportedly been years in the making and is the culmination of Younge's sonic vision as well as being his most expansive and experimental work to date. Brazilian vocalists, fuzzed-out drums and lush orchestration evoke MPB greats like Verocai and Os Mutantes and hip-hop kings Wu-Tang in equal measure. Tracks like 'Nunca Estranhos' and 'Nossas Sombras' are richly cinematic and deeply soulful standouts. More than a closing chapter, this record cements Younge's legacy as a visionary composer.

Review: A remarkable feat in the world of jazz 're-collaboration', LA's Jazz Is Dead series focuses on putting younger and older jazz artists in the same studio, producing compilation albums of new and original music made between these fresh faces and old golds. For the 11th instalment of the series, former A Tribe Called Quest member and label founder Ali Shaheed Muhammad links up with composer Adrian Younge for an executively-produced slew of collaborations, with the likes of Lonnie Liston Smith, Tony Allen, Jean Carne and Katalyst in tow. And judging from the album's slick and knife-edge musicianship, we'll happily assert that Muhammad and Younge are the DJ Khaleds of jazz, fostering collabs we never could have dreamt of.

Joao Donato - "Liaisons" (Dibiase remix) (6:03)
Azymuth - "Rendor Do Samba" (DJ Spinna remix) (5:28)
Review: The popular Jazz Is Dead series has put out a wealth of killer tunes headed up by Adrian Younge and now a bunch of them get revisited for this special remix album. It reads like a who's who of contemporary jazz players and opens with none other than broken beat maestro Kadi Tatham. His take on Marcos Valle's 'Gotta Love Again' is a real joy, while there are low fi beat delights from Pink Sifu, chopped up sounds from Cut Chemist and a gloriously sunny and upbeat version of Doug Carn's 'Windfall' by Natureboy Flako who produced Fatima's excellent last album.

Review: Since launching the Jazz is Dead series two years ago, Adrian Younge and Ali Shaheed Muuhammad have released eight studio albums - each a collaboration with a different figure from the jazz and soul spectrum - and a compilation of instrumental takes. It makes sense, then, that volume 10 is a remix album, with a variety of producers putting their stamp on cuts from the pair's expansive joint catalogue. As you'd expect, it's packed to the rafters with killer hip-hop, downtempo and broken beat reworks, with highlights including Cut Chemist's head-nodding, cinematic hip-hop take on Gary Bartz hook-up 'Soulsea', Shigeto's contemporary spiritual jazz revision of Brian Jackson co-production 'Nacy Wilson', and DJ Spinna's squelchy, house-not-house rub of Azymouth collaboration 'Rendor Do Samba'. Soulful, jazz-fired perfection.

Review: On previous instalments in their essential Jazz is Dead series, Adrian Younge and A Tribe Called Quest's Ali Shadeed Muhammad have served up some super fresh and new takes on jazz for the modern generation. They have had help from the likes of Roy Ayers, Azymuth and Marcos Valle, all of whom have made it an essential series. Now they serve up a limited edition coloured vinyl release that offers a bunch of fantastic instrumentals. Those aforementioned big names all feature on these tunes which cover every style of jazz and then some.

Review: Jazz Is Dead is a series that welcomes contemporary musicians to revisit jazz storied of old. This collection challenges Adrian Younge and Ali Shaheed Muhammad to utilise vintage equipment to create new master soundscapes, and they really come correct. Roy Ayers, Gary Bartz, Marcos Valle, Azymuth, Doug Carn, Joao Donato, & Brian Jackson are some of the legends who feature and the album is a free flowing delight that touches on soaring and soulful highs as well as bossa-tinged shufflers and plenty in between.

Review: Having earned her stripes on America's independent jazz scene, Brandee Younger has now made the step up to the big time. Somewhere Different marks the harpist and composer's first appearance on Impulse, a label long associated with jazz greats. She's delivered the goods too, opening with a string of sweet, spiritual jazz influenced soul numbers, most of which are introspective in tone and reflect her experience during the first pandemic lockdown, before delivering a swathe of more energetic and up-tempo numbers that draw more influence from rock and jazz-dance. Throw in appearances from some true jazz greats (Ron Carter, Morris Brown and Chelsea Baratz all feature) and you have a genuinely impressive album..

Review: Performer, composer and educator Brandee Younger is an accomplished ensemble leader who has worked with the likes of Lauryn Hill and Phaorah Sanders. Here she is back at the front of her own troupe with an album that was recorded in New York City at the legendary studio of Rudy Van Gelder. The music is richly detailed contemporary jazz but with echoes of Black greats like Alice Coltrane and Dorothy Ashby. Legendary bassist Ron Carter appears as does Tarriona Tank Ball to make this a real jewel of a record.

Review: Brandee Younger has always been a unique artist: a harpist who frequently utilises the instrument in a wide variety of (sometimes surprising) musical contexts and whose impressive CV also includes work with hip-hop luminaries such as Common and Ryan Leslie. On her fifth solo album, and second for Impulse!, Younger continues this adventurous but highly entertaining approach, offering up a mixture of original compositions and Dorothy Ashby covers that frequently draws influence from hip-hop, smooth jazz, modern soul and fusion. Highlights are plentiful, with our picks including the luscious, harp-laden soul head-nod of 'Brand New Life' (where Mumu Fresh delivers a sublime lead vocal), Pete Rock hook-up 'Livin' And Lovin' In My Own Way', and the duelling harp and vibraphone solos of the vintage Roy Ayers-inspired goodness of 'You're a Girl For One Man Only'.

Review: Dhafer Youssef is one of the catalysts who helped bring the eastern and western worlds of music together. The Tunisian oud player and vocalist released his solo long player in 2016. Diwan Of Beauty And Odd was recorded with Aaron Parks, Ben Williams, Mark Giuliana and Ambrose Akinmusire and for its unique fusion of Arabic and Western sounds it was highly praised by fans and critics alike. Standout tracks such as 'Fly Shadow Fly' and 'Diving In The Air' now get include on this heavyweight vinyl pressing on audiophile magenta. A truly spiritual listen.

Review: Yussef Days, a virtuoso drummer, has injected fresh energy into contemporary jazz and broken beat genres through multiple innovative projects, each showcasing his remarkable talent. One of them is The Yussef Dayes Experience which recently dropped its Live At Joshua Tree Presented By Soulection album and now follows it up with another live album, this time from Malibu, on Gilles Peterson's revered Brownswood label. It features music from his critically acclaimed debut solo album, Black Classical Music, and plenty of other gems on limited vinyl with features from his usual longtime collaborators Rocco Palladino, Venna, Elijah Fox, and Alexander Bourt.

Review: Brownswood Recordings has high hopes for this debut album from the previously unheralded Yussef Kamaal, which brings together hyped producer Kamaal Williams (AKA Henry Wu) and fast-rising Afrobeat drummer Yussef Dayes. With such talent to draw on, you'd expect Black Focus to be rather good. Happily, it is, with the duo delivering a typically London-centric take on jazz funk. That means that they take as much inspiration from the work of Kaidi Tatham as, say, Herbie Hancock. The key to the album's success - and, yes, it is generally as special as Gilles Peterson suggests - is the fluid combination of Dayes' brilliant drumming and Williams' superb synth solos and effortlessly groovy Rhodes playing.
