Review: Among others in his oeuvre like Millennium Actress and Paprika, Satoshi Kon's crowning anime masterpiece Perfect Blue appeared as part of a recent BFI retrospective, owing to the endurance of certain tropes in Japanese cyberculture: celebrity obsession, J-starlets, dissociation. Adapted from Yoshikazu Takeuchi's novel and animated by Madhouse, Perfect Blue follows pop idol Mima as she abandons her girl group image and descends into a surreal unraveling of identity, fame and reality. This Cinema Kan reissue hears Masahiro Ikumi's eerie soundtrack cues blur seamlessly with the chirpy pop of Mima's former idol days, dragging listeners through the same emotional whiplash as the film's protagonist. A void, expressionist garble emerges at the tail end of a pristinely pop-parasocial start, marking the ingenuities of soundtrack artist and animator in unison.
