A Night In Tunisia

Kozo's Waltz
Review: Making a name for himself in the 1940s in the big bands of Fletcher Henderson and Billy Eckstine, as well as through his work with bebop musicians Thelnious Monk, Charlie Parker and Dizzy Gillespie, Art Blakey was undoubtedly one of the greatest American jazz drummers of the 40s and beyond. Recorded in 1960 at Englewood Cliffs' iconic Van Gelder Studio and released a year later on Blue Notes Records, A Night in Tunisia is a glittering collaborative project between Blakey and The Jazz Messengers - a group led by Blakey from the outset that was active for over thirty-five years. This album is a wonderful example of how Blakey structured sessions in such a way as to allow generous pockets of solo room for his young talent to shine.

Review: The Sound Of Music had a long-lasting impact, and one of its cornerstones was 'My Favourite Things', later covered by trumpeter-visionary John Coltrane. Coltrane's version - the lead track from the album of the same name - helped cement the song's cultural standing, topping the charts in several countries. Three other tracks appear on the album in mono; Cole Porter's 'Ev'ry Time We Say Goodbye', and two standards from the Gershwin twins on the B side. This new reissue by Rhino, however, has both stereo and mono, along with new liner notes: we're blown away by this light-hearted trumpet masterpiece.

Review: This exclusive reissue revisits Getz/Gilberto, a timeless classic in jazz history. Originally released in 1964, the album showcases the remarkable collaboration between saxophonist Stan Getz, guitarist Joao Gilberto, and composer Antonio Carlos Jobim, and it marked a pinnacle in the fusion of jazz and bossa nova. Its ten tracks create a mesmerising blend of melody and rhythm which have been enchanting listeners for over fifty years. At its core is the synergy between Getz's velvety, lyrical saxophone tone and Gilberto's soft, intimate guitar and vocal style, both of which capture the essence of bossa nova and create an enduring musical masterpiece.

Review: Thelonious Monk's 1958 album Misterioso captures the vibrant energy of his live performances at the Five Spot Cafe in New York City. Known for its intimate setting, the venue highlights Monk's innovative jazz style and the dynamic interplay within his quartet while Johnny Griffin's tenor saxophone adds a rich, fluid counterpoint to Monk's distinctive piano playing with standout solos on tracks like 'Nutty' and 'Blues Five Spot.' The rhythm section with Ahmed Abdul-Malik on bass and Roy Haynes on drums offers a solid foundation that enhances the group's creative exploration and helped earn this album such praise for its innovative approach to jazz.
