Review: After an impressive last release on Not Not Fun, the concept-driven project Afterhours is back on the label with another selection of nourish beat downs laden with sonic signifiers that paint a cinematic picture in amongst driving beats and alluring melodics. The music itself lends itself to the dancefloor of any weary end-of-the-night-into-the-next-day party, with enough power to rattle the bones while woozy enough to slip comfortably into the unconscious mind. The production is impressive, from the gamelan tones of "Defragment #2" to the Mo Wax-infused funk of "Sixty-Four", touching on many different styles while creating a coherent complete release.

Review: Since 2013, the Beat Detectives have been putting out under-the-radar cassettes and LP's via labels such as 100% Silk and Where To Now?, among others. For their latest splash of electronics and acid-laced beat science, they appear on the excellent Not Not Fun outlet for a mish-mash of loose hardware loops and drugged-out jams. The opener "Roaring Lion" is just about as lo-fi one can get, and other tunes such as "Dead Girl At A Party" or "Battery Life" follow in the same spirit. There's also plenty of pseudo-technoism going on elsewhere, most notably on "Something Temporary" and "Reward Card", two cuts which sound like Jamal Moss on a heavy dose of tranquillisers...Yes, that is a handful!

Review: Belgian synthesist David Edren has a sterling reputation as part of the rapidly re-blossoming (if that's a word) New Age music scene. Once the preserve of hippies-cum-proto-hipsters who preferred must to musk and were well ahead of their time in terms of things like seaweed-based chocolate alternatives and not being bastards to the planet, in the 21st Century their values, and at least some of their favourite sounds, are finally becoming mainstream.
Over 12 tracks, Relativiteit Van De Omgeving reveals itself to be an incredibly visual experience, both in terms of creation and consumption. Apparently, Edren was picturing widescreen imagery of the tracks themselves, from meteor showers to the miniature jungle of an urban greenhouse. This is reflected in the tones themselves, which move from earthy and woody ('Uurwerk') to cosmic ('Schaatsenrijder'), and back again.

Review: Despite a relative dearth of releases, San Francisco's Group Rhoda (actually a solo project from singer and analog synth fetishist Mara) has already made waves, most notably with a curious remix of the Asphodells, and 2012 debut album Out of Time - Out of Touch. This sophomore set should increase the publicity-shy musician's standing considerably. Woozy, a little psychedelic, slightly tropical, extremely stylish and more often than not unconventionally beautiful, 12th House offers a sun-drenched take on coldwave and synthwave that's rarely less than thrilling. It frequently flits between warm and gorgeous ("Coral Castle"), and stargazing darkness ("Space Race"). Throughout, Mara remains an air of enigmatic distance.

Review: Entering into the spirit of dark synthesiser music with gusto, Xander Harris steps up to his regular post at Not Not Fun for another album of impeccable studies into the more ghoulish end of the 80s soundtrack spectrum. From beatless drone scapes to Italo-infused throb, there's just no telling Harris' work apart from that of his inspirations some thirty years earlier, so faithfully has he arranged his wistful melodies, thrumming basslines and plastic drums. If you crave an instant ticket to a world of grainy city scapes, squealing tyres and bad ass anti-heroes, there's a good chance that The New Age Of Dark Love will get you there quicker than anything else.

Review: Antoni Maiovvi, a Bristol born artist of no fixed European abode, has been infiltrating strains of Obscure Disco, Synth Disco and Italo-Disco for several years now, but if feels as if the wider world is finally ready to embrace his gothic vision. As the Giallo Disco label he runs with Vercetti Technicolour grows, so does a creative partnership with Umberto for Death Waltz Originals, and now we have Avrokosm. Some six tracks long, Avrokosm is a fine debut for Amanda Brown's Not-Not-Fun label, charting new levels of Maiovvian mysticism and dancefloor pleasure - see "Road Worn" and "Afternoon Youth" for the most compelling examples of this latter facet. The sci landscape sleeve artwork from Annita Rivera is superb too!

Review: Estonian-in-Brooklyn Maria Minerva has built up a reputation for being hard-to-pigeonhole, releasing a string of albums that variously join the dots between skewed pop, coldwave, dreamy downtempo oddities, sci-fi tinged electronica and wonky bass music. There's more of this loose, lo-fi eccentricity on this fourth solo full-length for regular home Not Not Fun. Summarizing it is tricky, though Minerva's woozy, quirky vocals and curious lyrics are a constant. This helps draw together the disparate musical strands. By the end, it almost makes perfect sense - though repeat listens are recommended. It's certainly a special set.

Review: The Amazonian Estonian songstress makes her triumphant return to Not Not Fun with her third album in 18 months. It's easily the best collection of tracks she's produced in her short but productive career; sharpening up her sound but still remaining resolutely lo-fi. The chopped up eastern strings of opener "The Sound" showcases a new sample based direction, albeit one which melds with her foggy synths, while "I Don't Wanna Be Discovered" sees her advance the house sounds of her 100% Silk output with a genuine alternate reality 90s club hit, and "Sweet Synergy" indulges her hip-hop tendencies with an R&B jam to way only Minerva could do it. Like the equally prolific masters of decayed synths and weirdo lounge-pop Hype Williams, Minerva is only getting better with each release - brilliant stuff.
