In Love EP

Deep House
In Love
Black Stem
In Love (Kastil remix)
Review: Nurtured by The Revenge and a regular on labels such as Kolour, Quintessentials and On The Prowl, Andy Ash's deep house heroics are hitting all the right spots at present. "In Love" takes the classic N-Joi vocal refrain and throws it down over a subtle 808 groove, "Black Stern" plays the consummate Kerri Chandler with its dream-weaving synth washes and butt-wiggling sub licks. Kastil completes the set with a remix of "In Love", adding a Julien Jabre style progressive flavour to the groove; it complements Andy's originals with charm and audio panache.

You:Me (feat Faber) (5:57)
You:Me (Mark E remix) (7:38)
Momentary Days (5:19)
Reach (4:32)
Rico Rico! (1:55)
Review: Saft is a label that deals in totally fad-free house music, often of a deeper persuasion. Andy Ash is a low-key but high-class UK producer who shows his skills here starting with the zoned-out but subtly pumping 'You:Me' (feat Faber) which is doused in fuzzy pads. A Mark E remix gets more heavy but no less cavernous and heady, then 'Momentary Days' slips into a skippy jazzed-up groove for cosy backroom parties. 'Reach' is a masterclass in scuffed-up drums and grooves that encourage you to gaze off into the distance and rue some long-lost love. 'Rico Rico!' closes out a an EP for connoisseurs only with noodling keys and beatdown blissfulness.

Brame - "Love To You"
Brame - "Love To You" (Gianni Siravo Washerman remix)
Adryiano - "Toujours"
Review: Getting in a lather for that classic 90s house sound, Spanish label Saft draft in three promising up and comers to show off their appropriations of the canonical era of house music. Brame weighs in heavy with "Love To You", getting some sizable chords into the fray amidst an uptempo garage groove. Gianni Siravo, better known as Washerman, gets freaky for his remix by firing off some fresh organ stabs and reaching almost for a transcendental techno experience by letting the melodies propel and the beat support. Adryiano's "Toujours" takes a more measured approach, falling into an understated groove with muted Rhodes chords and a percussive roll.

Break Out (6:48)
Hazy Stomp (3:15)
Your House (5:47)
Review: Here's a genuine surprise: a house 12" from Los Angeles' undisputed master of synth-boogie, Dam Funk. Of course, this isn't house in the traditional sense, and all three tracks still feature the Stones Throw regular's usual fluid synth lines, rich chords and bubbly synth basslines. Even so, with its cowbell-driven 4/4 beat pattern, hypnotic construction and dedication to low-end groove, "Break Out" is still a proper house track. The same could be said of the even more stylistically authentic "Your House", in which Dam Funk does his best to combine his own ear for melody with clear Larry Heard influences. The results are nothing less than superb.

Think (9:20)

Sun Gospel (4:36)
Shine (4:56)
Review: Spanish label Saft welcomes back the masterful LA beat maker Dam Funk for another EP in his Architecture series. This is the third and final volume and is another one jam packed with red hot late night house. As always, the chords are lo-fi here, and the mood captures that feeling of riding a bike down an LA street as the sun sets in the distance (not that we've ever done that, but we can dream.) The boogie bass, the hip sinning claps, the off-grid hits and kicks are all perfectly deep and seductive. Even though these are essentially simple loop tracks, those loops are so delicious you never want them to end.

George Davis - "The Feather"
George Davis - "The Feather" (Shane Linehan remix)
Kastil - "Lay Down"
Review: The highlight of this excellent EP from Spanish newcomers SAFT is undoubtedly Kastil's "Lay Down", a delicious trip into revivalist US garage territory. Simultaneously driving yet loose and groovesome, it sounds like a more cultured take on the pleasing revivalism offering by the Local Talk label. George Davis also impresses with "Feather", a deeper take on vintage New York deep house/garage featuring a poetic spoken word section. Shane Linehan remixes, delivering a take that emphasises the vocal and Davis's warm riffs and snappy snares. As first EPs go, New SAFT is a bit of a doozy.

Up Again (5:22)
Up Again (Deep Explorer mix) (5:09)
Tropic (4:08)
Review: The always super cultured Spanish label Saft brings more house goodness on this lush 12". It is master of the deep Dubbyman who takes care of the originals, with 'En La Ciudad' rocking back on forth on funky bass riffs, while cosmic pads drift up top to heady effect. Detroit player Fit Siegel remixes with his usual crunchy drum sounds and balmy, heartwarming chords, then 'Up Again' is a cute disco-tinged jam for loved-up floors. After a widescreen Deep Explorer mix comes closer 'Tropic,' an exquisite bit of downtempo beat work that soothes buys minds and aching bodies with a little hint of Balearic magic.

Limits (6:22)
Electronic Side (8:12)
Time To Shine (feat Paula King) (7:01)
Time To Shine (Vincent Floyd remix) (7:17)
Review: Four Walls has been pushing house music in all the right directions since his debut in 2012, most notably landing on the Traxx Underground label, alongside DJ Steaw and the Nathaniel X Project. This time around he's on Spain's SAFT label, and he's got a bunch of luscious, dusty house groovers to warm up your evenings. "Limits" is docile and gentle, a real house massage, and "Electronic Slide", as the name suggests, is a playful little deep house tune for the warm up sets. On the B-side, there's the more soulful swings of "Time To Shine", featuring Paula King's lovely vocal charm, and a Vincent Floyd remix to push the tune into outer space and into off-kilter mode. Lovely.

Your Eyes & The Sea
Liger (Gene Hunt 326 US remix)
Review: If it's soaring, soulful analogue house you're after, then look no further than the latest missive from Mathematics devotee Giorgio Luceri. Heading over to the Saft stable for more of that ever-loving Larry Heard style, Luceri is on stellar form as he coos out a message of spirituality and electronic escapism. "Liger" is a slow-release affair that lets the strings creep in gently behind a steady tick of the drum machine and a steadfast bassline, while "Your Eyes & The Sea" heads into a blissful vat of mellow chords and spaced out claps. Gene Hunt isn't afraid to rough things up a little with his remix of "Liger" though, deploying a tougher beat through which he weaves the melodic content of the original.

Then & Now
Layin' Low
Right Back To You
Review: Well-versed in the art of US garage house music, Tomska sounds in fine form on his first release for SAFT after enjoying a breakthrough 12 months. "Then & Now" couldn't come on any tougher if it tried with its militant kick thump and razor-sharp hats, while the organ line is in just the right frequency to quell the rowdy beats. The vibe is equally bumping on "Layin' Low", if not quite so overtly hard on the drums. "Right Back To You" meanwhile takes a rougher approach as the beats seem to stagger and misshapen themselves, still leaving plenty of time for a cheeky little organ turn of course.

Look Deeper (5:07)
X Rousse (feat Patchworks) (5:48)
Bagaco (6:07)
Bagaco (Seb Wildblood remix) (6:45)
Review: Creative Swing Alliance member Pablo Valentino has made some fine deep house over the years, much of it blessed with the distinctive swing of MPC drums and more than a few nods to jazz, but rarely anything quite as classy as this outing on Spanish label SAFT. For proof, look no further than opener 'Look Deeper', a kind of Dilla-does-deep house affair laden with starry electric piano motifs, eyes-closed female vocal samples and jazzy bass, and the dusty, sample-heavy beatdown vibes of 'X Rousse' (where musical polymath Bruno Havert guests under his Patchworks alias). Elsewhere, 'Bagaco' is a classic-sounding slab of dusty and warming deep house smothered in hazy stabs and Ron Trent style percussion, while Seb Wildblood's remix of the same track turns it into a spacey, dubby and ultra-deep breakbeat shuffler.

Pablo Valentino - "La Caverne"
Pablo Valentino - "La Caverne" (Moon B Interpretation)
Jefferson Belmondo - "Shakalak"
Review: There's plenty of fresh house wares on offer at Saft, as the Spanish label sizes up some new contenders to deliver their vision of the deepest grooves known to humanity. Pablo Valentino is in a mellow mood but his drums still pound out underneath dubby chord pulses on "La Caverne", before Moon B switches things up with a more distinctive approach that keeps alien whispers of boogie in amongst some bass heavy business for the more adventurous floor. Jefferson Belmondo is in charge on the B-side and he means business with the drum focused jacker "Shakalak".

Just A Touch
Deep Feelin'
Mellow Go
Review: Swiss based Italian DJ Gianni Siravo continues to excel under his recently established Washerman alias, with an appearance on the newly minted Saft imprint following a superlative drop for Drumpoet earlier in 2012. Whilst that releases focused on no nonsense booming warehouse sounds, the three track Deeper For Me approaches matters from a slightly more classical deep house angle (as you'd expect from the title) Opening track "Just A Touch" hogs the A Side with one of those thick punchy grooves reminiscent of 90s US garage but its complemented by vast washes of subaqueous melody that lend the track some contemporary feeling. On the flip, "Deep Feelin" is rhythmically more clipped, lead by a nagging vocal under tone and slick percussive embellishments that keep you on your toes, whilst Washerman playfully drops drunken keys on top. Finally "Mellow Go" stays true its title, with the straight groove deep in the mix as the woozy keys and incandescent chords are allowed centre stage to work their magic.
