Italian-Brazilian musician and film score composer Claudio Simonetti is no stranger to fans of 1970s horror. Or at least the work he and progressive rock band Goblin have made to accompany such flicks will be familiar to genre fans. Often working with the great Dario Argento, he was the music man in the director's absolute heyday - so think Suspiria, and Phenomena, to name but two - and has remained loyal ever since, with forthcoming movie The Sandman another of the pair's collaborations.
Profundo Rosso, or Deep Red, is up there with the duo's most celebrated, first released - both score and flick - in 1975, the soundtrack is packed with slap bass, piano flair, and funk grooves, while also offering plenty by way of synthesised atmospherics and a general feeling of descending deeper into the jaws of madness. A thing of strange power, to say the least.
