Here's a genuine surprise: a house 12" from Los Angeles' undisputed master of synth-boogie, Dam Funk. Of course, this isn't house in the traditional sense, and all three tracks still feature the Stones Throw regular's usual fluid synth lines, rich chords and bubbly synth basslines. Even so, with its cowbell-driven 4/4 beat pattern, hypnotic construction and dedication to low-end groove, "Break Out" is still a proper house track. The same could be said of the even more stylistically authentic "Your House", in which Dam Funk does his best to combine his own ear for melody with clear Larry Heard influences. The results are nothing less than superb.
