1959's The Sermon! is perhaps one of legend Jimmy Smith's most playful works, taking a delightfully bouncy approach to the hard-bop style, making for a fun and joyful segment of tracks. Originally out through the mythical Blue Note, this reissue comes courtesy of Down At Dawn, and the opening "The Sermon" has that ability to bring you back to the smoke-ridden club basements of the past. On the B-side, "JOS" is a high-speed, high-thrill cascade of trumpets and percussion, while "Flamingo" slows the groove down to a gentle lull of guitar and bass. Just what you need.
