Musically mesmerising and politically poignant, Max Richter presents the second instalment in his Voices project. Inspired by the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, the first part of this work was broadcast on radio stations across the world on 10th December 2020 to mark Human Rights Day, but the significance of its message and mission has far more longevity.
Episode Deux picks up where that left off, and instrumentally speaking sticks to a similar path - tracks are apparently designed with a 'space to think' principle in mind. We assume that means blissful pianos and heartfelt strings that have power and purpose but also a respectful patience, allowing us to consider the themes the preceding album wore on its sleeve through recordings of the Declaration being read out by 70 voices plucked from across the globe. This is less overt, then, but equally impactful.
