Ecstasy Before The Altar (8:51)

Thirst For Disappearance (4:02)
Into Euphoria (6:39)
Review: Flesh & The Dream is the pairing of Heather Leigh and Shackleton and between them they take a deep dive into a world of psychic dancehall on Choose Mortality, their debut album together. To say it is experimental is an understatement - they manage to mangle rhythms and distort sound, layer up oozing synths and deranged folk vocalisations into an album of psychedelic suspense and unease. None of these tracks ever sit still, whether it's the trippy church communion of 'Diviner Of The Flesh', hellish underworld electronica of 'Before The Flood' or depraved dub of 'Thirst For Disappearance'. Brilliantly bonkers.

Four Up (6:39)
Review: Little is documented about the creators of 1975's Funky Stuff. Jiro Inagaki and his band's legacy is almost entirely musical, devoid of the personal details that often accompany jazz musicians. To understand this album, it must be placed within its cultural context. Japan's jazz scene, one of the largest per capita, has faced accusations of imitation and unoriginality. However, Inagaki's work, particularly in the late '60s and early '70s fusion era, defies these stereotypes. Inagaki's genre-blending began with 1970's Head Rock, less experimental than Bitches Brew but equally dynamic. By 1975, Inagaki had embraced funk, culminating in Funky Stuff. The album, laden with rich bass-lines, wah-wah pedals, and layered percussion, opens with the danceable 'Painted Paradise'. Pianist Hiromasa Suzuki, who wrote most tracks, shines, especially on the melancholic 'Breeze' and the bossa-nova 'Gentle Wave'. Covers like Kool & The Gang's 'Funky Stuff' and Wayne Henderson's 'Scratch' are highlights. Funky Stuff joyously engages with funk's rhythms, making it a delightful hidden gem.

Review: Japanese jazz drummer Takeshi Inomata is a little-spoken-about figure in the jazz-rock scene; The Japan Jazz All Stars alumn, We 3 trio leader and Rhythm Clinic Center founder has made well over 300 recordings in his career - this being the third in a year-long trilogy enthusiastically and successively released under the Sound Limited name alongside Kimio Mizutani and Shigenori Kamiya - amongst others - largely influenced by European musicians like Donovan and The Beatles. A notable and funny inclusion is 'London Bridge is Falling Down', a quite literal jazz groove cover interpolating the famous nursery rhyme. Opening track 'Something' is a cracking piece of relaxing jazz, nothing eye-popping, just some glossy, well-played, easy listening. 'Hurdy Gurdy Man' is a fast-paced funk cut with striking psychedelic guitars over a frantic flute line - the project showed Inomata's vision for a more approachable and instantly catchy jazz rock that still retained a lot of character and left, evidently, lots of room for experimentation.

Review: Syd Barrett recorded a special set just for the legendary John Peel Sessions for the cult Top Gear show which was presented by Peel himself on February 24, 1970. This is a record that captures exactly what he played and the selection also includes three extra unreleased songs recorded for a Bob Harris Sounds of the Seventies show almost exactly one year later. The tunes are paired with an equally historic Pink Floyd performance and the whole lot comes on a nice coloured slab of vinyl. It's a great way to relive a great time in prog.

Review: A British hard-blues band known for releasing just one album on Decca way back in 1969, Sam Apple Pie had never again shown any promise of sharing more material with the world - until now. Second Helping is an unreleased album that they recorded in 1970, quite possibly as a follow-up to their debut. Miraculously, the album was taken from an acetate that was recently found, but which lacked any song titles or credits. Influences from Fleetwood Mac, Edgar Broughton Band and Free collide into an honest bluesy, boogie-rocky, instrumentally focused sound, with impassioned performances and trilling interludes making for an LP that feels higher-concept than most in the genre.

Review: The 1973 album Love Devotion Surrender marks the singular collaboration between guitar legends Carlos Santana and Mahavishnu John McLaughlin, resulting in a spiritually charged masterpiece. This reissue from Mobile Fidelity unties both of the artist's quest for enlightenment, drawing inspiration from John Coltrane's work and their shared devotion to Indian guru Sri Chinmoy. Sourced from the original analog master tapes, this reissue showcases the album's intricate sonic landscape with remarkable clarity. The dynamic interplay between Santana and McLaughlin, with Santana predominantly on the left and McLaughlin on the right, creates an wonderful live listening experience. The album’s varied tempos and tones, ranging from delicate acoustic passages to powerful bursts of percussion, are brought to life with extraordinary realism. Featuring interpretations of Coltrane classics like 'A Love Supreme' and 'Naima,' as well as original compositions, the album blends jazz, rock, and gospel elements. Larry Young, credited as Khalid Yasin, delivers standout organ accompaniment, adding depth to the improvisational lines and ecstatic chords that define the record. Love Devotion Surrender remains a transcendent journey through sound, driven by two of music’s most visionary artists.

Review: Memories in Beach House by Seaside Lovers is one of those much sought-after city pop gems. It comes from 1983 and on now is it reissued on vinyl. The album features three iconic Japanese musicians of the 80s - Akira Inoue, Hiroshi Sato, and Masataka Matsutoya (who is the husband of Yumi Matsutoya) and as master keyboardists, they deliver a lush, harmonically rich collection of island fusion sounds that blend jazz and electronic influences into new forms. The mostly instrumental tracks are occasionally accented with light Balearic vocals and so although summer may be over, this album transports you to the sea with its relaxing beachside vibes and smooth atmospheric sound.

Review: Franco Falsini's Sensation's Fix were the subject of a much needed career retrospective last year, with RVNG Intl's Music Is Painting In The Air offering a fantastic overview of the work the fondly remembered purveyors of reverb heavy cosmiche pop did in the 1970s. With that still fresh in our minds, it's great to see Superior Viaduct reissue Fragments Of Light, the 1974 debut album proper from Sensations Fix, for the first time on vinyl since its initial release. At this stage of Sensation's Fix sonic trajectory, Falsini was still focused on a more guitar based pop approach than the elegance he would later achieve but Fragments Of Light remains an important historical document in the story of music's most eminently cool figures.

Review: A true diamond in the pantheon of French progressive rock, Skryvania’s sole album, released in 1978, is currently the scene’s most expensive artefact. The album’s musical merit is hardly contestable; although largely composed in the typically French symphonic prog vein, it is no stranger to hard prog and psychedelia, with fuzzed-out guitar solos in constant dialogue with escalating Moog assaults. This largely instrumental album was originally released on the DIY label DMR (Philippe de Magnée Recordings, the group’s producer and mentor) and limited to just 300 copies. This is the first vinyl reissue ever since 1978, remastered straight from the original tapes, courtesy of the original label owner whose funding of the album was a catalyst and indispensable condition for its release. In exactly the same mindset, it comes as 300 reissued copies, all hand-numbered. You'll be just as sure to enjoy the bonus CD, on which you can experience salvaged soundboard recordings from Skryvania’s rare live performances during their short-lived existence, recorded by Philippe de Magnée who was also the band’s sound engineer at their live performances. The reissue is couched in the original album artwork (not featured in subsequent CD editions), and includes a 2-page insert with the band’s official biography, as well as previously unreleased live and studio photos.

Review: Slapp Happy were an avant-garde pop group formed in Hamburg in 1972, and fronted by Dagmar Krause, in turn was flanked by guitarist Anthony Moore and keyboardist Peter Blegvad. Their first album, Sort Of demonstrated their implied oeuvre of quirky melodies, art rock tingings and surreal lyrics. Considered their most accessible album (compared to a more challenging later output), it features 12 tracks of whimsical and playful pastoralism, with choral folk, cabaret, and jazz influences ringing true across a mythical blues-rock wonderworld. The whole thing is reminiscent of a sonic Lewis Carroll epic, whose narrative behaves as unpredictably as his stories did.

Review: Sleep Token formed in London in 2016, and they're already notching up their third album for the mighty Spinefarm Records. The band have taken the route of being anonymous with a purposeful move to put the attention on the music (and their supposed deity Sleep), and their pointed, angular take on metal and indie rock stands up to scrutiny. On Take Me Back To Eden they are purportedly closing off a trilogy which began with their debut, although this doesn't mean the end of the band. A good thing to, as they're sounding stronger than ever enmeshing their taut, spiky riffs with electronic textures, dexterous rhythms and canny hooks which keep their appeal broad and persuasive.

Review: The third studio album by English rock band Sleep Token, Take Me Back To Eden is an expansive prog-metal, alt and djent dark opus, packed with a mixture of lachrymose vocal longing and bat-out-of-hell metal drumming. Said to be part three of a trilogy, of which the third part of the establishing Sleep Token has been conclusively laid down, the album's latest lead singles such as 'Vore', 'Aqua Regia' and 'DYWTYLM' continue to brush against ideas of post- and trans-humanity, blending gothic mediaevalist themes and imagery with those of cyberpunk. Warring far-Northern clans incorporate nightmare phase weapons into their crazed pursuit to win, as ascendant guitar solos blur like AI melt-transitions into twinging synth arpeggiations.

Review: You could be forgiven for thinking this was a reissue, a record unearthed during the latest seek and discover session carried out by an enthusiastic boss of a small but daring record label. In actual fact, Blunt Razor is the debut album from Sleeping Dogs, a Beijing-based instrumental rock outfit, and it's pretty much brand spanking new.
Nevertheless, there's a Technicolour, Sensurround feeling to the tracks on here, which could well score a 1970s movie now held in cult status. Twanging guitars, a licking rhythm, flutes, cacophonies, sexy timbre and a general mood that should be impossible to create amid the 21st Century's comparatively dull and unadventurous world of influencers and Nutri Bullets. It's jazz, it's funk, it's lounge rock, it's groove, it's romance, it's smoky rooms filled with sunglasses and stiff drinks. And, amazingly given all those references, it's also completely fresh.

The album marked the band's 1972 debut and is an archetypal work from the German heavy rock trio. It takes some obvious inspiration from the electrifying energy of Jimi Hendrix and adds to that plenty of raw and powerful kraut-psych sound. It features the standout nine-minute epic 'To Hell' which is a real thrash delight with gritty riffs and rhythms all showcasing their fearless approach to heavy rock. Tiger Rock captures the spirit of experimentation and intensity that defined the Krautrock era.

Review: Small Medium Large is the name of both band and record; this is a stonking debut jazz opus, not to be passed up for a second. Formed of the fallout-miasmas of two or more establishing gigs, performed at the famed ETA venue in Los Angeles, the quintet - bassist Anna Butterss, synthesist Jeremiah Chiu, saxophonist Josh Johnson, percussionist Booker Stardrum, and guitarist Gregory Uhlmann - have gone on to fill a deftly stacked chiffonier of progressive jazz here. With manifold influences from Can's Holgar Czukay to the trance-prog of Harmonia, SML present an at-times Krauty, otherwise amusing, always seriously talent-wafting set of instrumental musings, with the establishing reverse-shots of 'Three Over Steel' giving sudden, sprouty rise to a major-key, synthjazz stamen, and the likes of 'Herbie For Commercials' and 'Search Bar Hi Hat' musing on the foibles of modern day jazz musicianship - hack composers, sample-pack beats - tied up in an all-round tragi-comi-phonic, silky-slick bow.

This live recording captures them in full flight at the legendary Bataclan in Paris, and the wild creative vision of Robert Wyatt's merry pranksters splays out from the ominous drum intro onwards, through towering crescendos of musicality that touch on noticeable album moments such as the 'Esther's Nose Job' suite from Volume Two to 'Moon In June', which would be released one year later on Third.

Review: The Canterbury scene alumni Soft Machine and their live album Hovikodden 1971 in Norway marks a significant turning point in the band's history, as it captures their transition into a fully instrumental ensemble. This beautifully packaged four record box set showcases the band's exceptional musicality and experimentation, blending elements of psychedelic rock, progressive rock, jazz rock, and proto-rock to create a unique and captivating sound. Despite their limited commercial success, Soft Machine's influence on rock music cannot be understated. Their innovative approach to instrumentation and composition has inspired countless subsequent artists and continues to resonate with fans of experimental and progressive rock. Hovikodden 1971 serves as a great example to the band's enduring legacy and their pivotal role in shaping the evolution of rock music and Cuneiform did a great job in taking the archives from the original reels and respectfully remixing any parts that needed a slight polish.

Review: ***B-STOCK: Sleeve damaged but otherwise in excellent condition***

Softs marked a pivotal moment in Soft Machine's evolution, departing from their experimental roots towards a refined jazz fusion sound. Following Bundles in 1975, this album found the group embracing a more structured approach while still delivering intricate and dynamic compositions. Keyboardist Karl Jenkins takes a more prominent role, with his compositions blending beautifully with John Etheridge's fiery guitar and Alan Wakeman's expressive saxophone. Highlights include the energetic 'The Tale of Taliesin', featuring a blistering guitar solo, and 'Ban-Ban Caliban', where the band's fusion of synths and sax creates a rich, textured sound. The album also includes softer moments like 'Song of Aeolus' and the piano-acoustic guitar duet in 'Out of Season', offering a contrast to the intensity of the faster tracks. Drummer John Marshall shines with a powerful solo in 'Kayoo' and the album concludes with Etheridge's gentle acoustic piece 'Etka'. While Softs diverges from the classic Soft Machine style, it stands as a strong jazz fusion album with undeniable charm. Review: Softs marked a pivotal moment in Soft Machine's evolution, departing from their experimental roots towards a refined jazz fusion sound. It's an excellent listen for fans of the genre, though some purists may find it a departure from the band's psychedelic roots.

Review: Estonian-based label RR Gems is on a mission to present music that carries on a rich tradition of "free form, experimental and jazz" sounds. It does that here with dynamic Helsinki sextet, Soft Power, who have a style that ranges from jazz-rock to psychedelic jazz, always with exuberant musicianship and eclectic energy. Raw Bites is another exceptional outing that challenges conventions without ever losing sight of a compelling groove in amongst the cosmic sounds and noodling melodies. Walking bass brings bluesy qualities to some tunes and others are epic sonic adventures a la Sun Ra.

Review: The Soundcarriers' fifth studio album, Through Other Reflection, blends nostalgic elements of 1960s psychedelia with modern, experimental flair. From the moment the needle drops, it's unmistakably the work of The Soundcarriers, with Leonore Wheatley and Dorian Conway's ethereal vocals harmonising over Paul Isherwood's precise basslines and Adam Cann's jazz-infused drumming. The album is a kaleidoscopic mix of influences, channeling everything from Tropicalia and Middle Eastern psychedelia to the cinematic atmospheres of Nino Nardini. Each track feels like a rediscovery of hidden musical gems, filtered through the band's unique lens. While Through Other Reflection shares the organic warmth of their previous album, Wilds, it ventures further into uncharted territory. Tracks like 'Always' and 'Feel The Way' push the boundaries, transforming from familiar melodies into hypnotic, trance-like explorations. The album is rich in texture, featuring an array of instruments from harpsichords and flutes to vintage organs and synthesisers, creating a vivid soundscape. The Soundcarriers effortlessly blend intricate arrangements with a sense of spontaneity, resulting in an album that is sophisticated, confirming their status as one of the most distinctive voices in British psychedelia.

Review: The Soundcarriers' fifth studio album, Through Other Reflections, showcases their distinctive blend of psychedelic pop and exotica. From the ethereal vocal duets of Leonore Wheatley and Dorian Conway to the intricate bass lines of Paul Isherwood and Adam Cann's jazz-inflected drumming, the album transports listeners to a reimagined 1960s landscape. The band's integration of Tropicalia, Middle Eastern psychedelic jazz, and French library music is evident throughout. While less reliant on overt pop hooks compared to their previous work, the album embraces a more exploratory approach. Tracks like 'Always' evolve from smoky ballads into hypnotic, garage-tinged trances, while 'What We Found' and 'Feel The Way' delve into immersive, ritualistic soundscapes. Through Other Reflections reflects both urban disillusionment and timeless escapism, merging layers of influence into a cohesive, atmospheric narrative. Scheduled for release via Phosphonic, this album continues to define The Soundcarriers' unique place in British psychedelia.

dents on outer sleeve, otherwise in excellent condition

First released way back in 1974 on the King Universal label, Spirale's sole LP has long been a cult classic. Original pressings are fiendishly hard to find, in part because the album's heady mixture of spiritual and progressive jazz is one of the finest examples of musical fusion around. That much is evident from opener 'Rising', a drowsy and fittingly titled chunk of sun-speckled spirituality, and the chiming, new age influenced bliss of 'Cabral, Anno 1', where bells, intricate percussion instruments and twittering bird sounds ushers in a stretched-out jazz groove. Elsewhere, 'Una Ballata Par Yanaz' is a deep, fluid, slow-motion number, while closing cut 'Peperoncino (Cose Vecchi, Cose Nuove)' is progressive jazz at its finest.

Review: Spock’s Beard are an American progressive rock band formed in 1992, and if the niche-interest feel of their name might suggest, then, to newcomers, we might describe their music as a complex blend of math and prog, influenced by the likes of Genesis, Yes, and Rush. The Oblivion Particle is their twelfth studio album, first released in 2015, and their second to feature vocalist and guitarist Ted Leonard as well as drummer Jimmy Keegan, who had by then replaced original members Neal Morse and Nick D’Virgilio, respectively. Across the LP, we Epic musings on the tides of time, fate, and existence, coming amid melodic electric guitar arpeggios and ambitious structures.

Review: Bob Stanley and Pete Wiggs of Saint Etienne fame are the diggers behind this new rock assemblage which pays tribute to mid-afternoon set times at lesser-known festivals from years gone (well, the 70s) such as Deeply Vale, Bickershaw, Krumlin, Weeley, and Plumpton. They were just as important to those who attended as the more celebrated likes of Glasto' and this collection shows the sounds were just as good, too. The sounds - from big names liek Deep Purple, Hawkwind and Alan Parker & Alan Hawkshaw to lesser known acts like Jonesy, will appeal to hippies and bikers alike with big riffs, funky drumming and some psyched-out sounds.

Review: Sternenmadchen, or Star Maiden in English, was a title given to Gille Lettmann, part of the Cosmic Couriers coterie of kosmische German adventurers in the mid 70s. The album Gilles Zeitschiff was released in 1974, but a quickly recorded follow-up never saw release despite the heavyweight line-up of Dieter Dierks,AJurgen Dollase,AHarald GroBkopf andAMythos backing up Gille. The reasons for the hiatus are undisclosed for now, but either way, 50 years after the fact, Gilles Zeitschiff 2 finally surfaces as a true gift from the psychedelic gods for all lovers of kosmische music.

Review: Kiyoshi Sugimoto's Babylonia Wind is a mesmerising dive into deep, mysterious grooves that entice you while challenging your surrender. Celebrated by peers like Terumasa Hino and Akira Ishikawa, Sugimoto's guitar work represents the pinnacle of modern jazz and jazz rock. This album beautifully showcases the collective talent of his band, featuring Hideo Ichikawa's electric piano creating ripples, Yoshio Ikeda's rich bass anchoring the sound, and Motohiko Hino's dynamic drumming. From the oceanic depths of the title track to the ethereal charm of 'Hieroglyph,' this reissue is an essential listening experience.

Review: Suishou No Fune formed in 1999 and has since been a place for collaborators Pirako Kurenai (who plays guitar and provides vocals) and Kageo (another guitarist) to serve up devastatingly simple yet languorous experimental soundtracks. Their new album, which translates as The wind is spring. There is a rainbow in the sky. Love is hiding in the waves, is a document that captures them playing live in May 2021 alongside Matsuedo Hideo on bass and Mark Anderson on drums. It begins with drawn-out drifts and moves onto the mesmeric guitars of 'Endless Descent' with their hypnotic one-chord strums. A majestic listen for sure.

Boasting a dense roster of vital contributors such as Kim Thayil (Soundgarden), Joe Preston (Earth, Thrones, Melvins, High on Fire), Phil Wandscher and Jesse Sykes, the work has gone on to become a monolithic display of harsh, oppressive, sanguine, experimentalist, metallic drone, crossing borders and oceans. This long awaited double LP reissue comes courtesy of Southern Lord, providing both the devout and newcomers alike a chance to experience the opus in its undiluted purity (without having to break the bank).

Review: Reissued on MOV, To the Highest Bidder (1971) is the second studio album by the Dutch progressive rock band Supersister. The band, formed in 1969, marked a significant step forward for the prog, jazz-rock and AOR genres, with their debut album Present from Nancy (1970) hinting at what would would inevitably become an ever-evolving style, especially in which early reflections of math rock slunk amok. Although To the Highest Bidder did not achieve major commercial success outside of the Netherlands, it has since been recognized as a classic of progressive rock, with Supersister having since gained a cult following. New fans are wont to swoon over the immensely speedy rhythm sections of Marco Vrolijk.
