Review: John Cale is best known as the founding member of one of the most important rock bands of all the time - The Velvet Underground. Cale has also had a wide-ranging solo career since the band's demise, having created blistering rock music, classical and avant-garde compositions, notable film scores and produced albums for Iggy Pop, Patti Smith and Squeeze. In this first television interview, Cale returns to Garnant in Wales where he grew up and began a promising career as a classical musician, before abandoning it all for the allure of New York in the 1960's. This documentary includes an exclusive interview with Lou Reed with whom Cale enjoyed a volatile but highly productive relationship for over thirty years. The boxed features newly remastered versions of every Camel album and single issued between 1973 and 1984, but also includes new stereo and 5.1 Surround Sound versions of the albums Camel, Mirage, Music Inspired by The Snow Goose, Moonmadness and Nude, as well as new mixes of three concerts; The Marquee Club, London 1974, Hammersmith Odeon 1976 and Hammersmith Odeon 1977. The set also features previously unreleased outtakes from album recording sessions and BBC Radio In Concert appearances from 1974, 1975, 1977 and 1981. Chaka Khan has been performing for almost 50 years. The multi-platinum, Grammy Award singer began her career in the early 1970s with the pre-eminent funk group Rufus. A beautiful and dynamic vocalist, Chaka was raised on Chicago's South Side. She began her career as a solo artist interestingly, singing jazz. Her fame however, came with contemporary solo funk hits like I Feel For You and the classic I'm Every Woman, which she successfully recorded 10 years before Whitney Houston's cover version.
This 1993 live performance at New York's intimate jazz club The Blue Note, finds Chaka in the musical environment that she has always felt most creative. In great voice and surrounded by five great jazzmen, she performs a rare catalogue of songs closely associated with jazz. Several of which cannot be found on other recordings.
She sings the Duke Ellington/Billy Strayhorn standard Take the "A" Train, Rodgers and Hart's My Funny Valentine plus Summertime and I Loves You, Porgy from Gershwin's folk opera Porgy and Bess.
