I Gotta Limit
Cat: AJX 822S. Rel: 12 Nov 24
I Gotta Limit (feat Kitty Liv) (3:10)
Summer Sun (David Arnold remix) (4:25)
Review: Having played a slew of inimitable and unforgettable television comedy characters over the past decade or so, from Toast of London's Stephen Toast to Douglas Reynholm in The IT Crowd, Dixon Bainbridge in The Mighty Boosh and Todd Rivers in Garth Marenghi's Darkplace, you could be forgiven for expecting Matt Berry to use songwriting and music as another form of hilarious release. That's definitely not the case. There's plenty of release on I Gotta Limit, but this is anything other than satire. The first new music to come from Berry's 2025 album, Heard Noises, the two tracks here are pure joy, authentic and genuinely impressive on a technical level. Exchanging lines in a duet with Kitty Liv for the titular number, the vibe is part Northern Soul, part psych rock, and pretty much all completely captivating.

My Neck, My Back (Lick It) (3:46)
My Neck, My Back (Lick It) (Benzi X Blvd remix) (3:20)
Review: There won't ever be a time that Khia's seminal slice of chart-busting sleaze goes out of fashion, and as such it's also a track ripe for remix potential. Some tracks are just made for everyone to get freaky, and 'My Neck, My Back (Lick It)' is one of those which will break down even the most taboo-laden of puritans. This 7" slice of pink perfection carries the original R&B version and the Benzi X Blvd remix, which adds a little funky house spice to proceedings. Trust us, everyone will thank you afterward when this gets popped on the platter.

Review: Sometimes it's just too difficult to contain our excitement; we're quaking in our boots at news of Khruangbin's next release, with the Texan three-piece this time lending their alt-indie-funk mastery to vocal frontage by Leon Bridges. The humorously titled lead single 'B-side' is emblematic of their stated aim here - to redefine "how people perceive Texas music i that beautiful marriage of country and r'n'b i and really paying homage to that." The sonic result? Bubbling bass and wahhy riffs, over a ghostly and misty relaxers' beat. Its hook digs into our thighs deeper than a Sheriff's steel spurs, and fittingly, it's music video is themed after a 19th Century western town.

Review: Because Music is an independent record label based in Paris and London with a roll call that includes Metronomy, Manu Chao, Ed Banger Records, Charlotte Gainsbourg, Major Lazer and more. Next up for the label is Electronic pop duo from the Netherlands Klyne, who deliver the explosive bass driven R&B jam "Don't Stop" featuring super cool vocals reminiscent of Prince. The soulful electronic pop continues on the smooth and sexy deep house of "Water Flow" calling to mind the aesthetic of Crosstown Rebels or the HFN Music sound. The chilling and bittersweet closer "Lend Me Another Name" ends the EP in style with its neon lit synths, sultry guitar licks and precision beats.

Review: This limited edition 12" has two unreleased Kenny Summit remixes of the huge Giorgio Moroder tune 'Right Here Right Now' featuring vocals from the untouchable global pop starlet that is Aussie fav Kylie Minogue. The first is all big drums, old school disco energy and camp as Christmas vocals with sleek production. If you want it a little more subtle, flip the yellow 12" over for the instrumental on the reverse.

Something On Your Mind

Angel Olsen - "Something On Your Mind" (3:44)
Karen Dalton - "Something On Your Mind" (3:25)
Review: Passing the torch several generations down, Angel Olsen covers 'Something On Your Mind', the Karen Dalton folk standard that went on to bewitch solo songwriter greats like Bob Dylan. Back to back with Dalton's original recording, LITA have achieved a marvellous work of contrast on this new addition to their 7" covers series. Remarkably, the two recordings sound as timeless as each other, with the remastering job rendering both so impeccable that they could have easily originated from the same time. With Dalton's drum-backed original dealing in themes of unspoken thoughts and deeply buried, bottled-up emotion, Olsen lends a newly note-quivering, glissandoing, beatless sheen to the song. Of course, the best covers are of songs that mean a lot to the covering artist; "'Something On Your Mind' for me is about letting yourself face something that keeps setting you back,", says Olsen.

Review: Folky dream pop duo Damon & Naomi have been going since 1991, or even longer if you count their tenure in cult late 80s band Galaxie 500. They return with their fifth record on their own 20/20/20 label, offering that sentimental, subtly gritty strain of songwriting that has won them such a devoted following over the years. If you're not familiar, you might well find their sound and heavy-hearted mood chimes with Low, albeit delivered in a slightly more direct way. The magic of their music lies in the ambiguous emotional note they can strike as the strung out twines of guitar wrap around their fragile but formidable vocal harmonies. Spellbinding stuff.

Review: Few stadiums involve the same level of America-ness as Fenway Park. Home to the Boston Red Sox, whether or not you believe baseball to be pointless and mundane, the fast food equivalent of cricket which is, somehow, also a slow cooked nothing, it's impossible not to appreciate just how much atmosphere there is in heritage sports arenas, and how much these places mean to the town that built them. For anyone to perform a concert at Fenway, then, is a privilege that betrays status. So does the deafening noise of tens of thousands singing along to the anthems on this Noah Kahan tour recording. Born in Vermont, but with strong family ties to the Boston area, the roaring and soaring folk-pop hitmaker - whose roots are as much in rock & roll as country and bluegrass - is quite simply commanding, even heard via the replay medium of vinyl or CD. Something to remember next time you consider tickets to see him in the flesh.

Her 2018 album Isolation truly proved that to the world while Sin Miedo (del Amor y Otros Demonios) marked a second album and first Spanish-language project from the great singer. It comes with plenty of re-sung but previously released tracks that explore dreamy latin grooves with mid tempo rhythms and sun kissed pads, as well as new cuts and a collaboration with PartyNextDoor, 'la luna enamorada'

Review: Inspired by her desire to embody the "femme divine", Kali Uchis' latest full length (her fourth in total) is an inspired meditation on love, heartbreak and honesty that's already been awarded rave reviews by music critics. Listening back, it's easy to see why. Rooted in soul and r&b but as boundary-blurring as her previous work, 'Red Moon In Venus' features some of her most immaculately executed vocals yet, impactful lyrics and an overall sense that the Colombian-American is an artist at the peak of her powers. For proof, check the aquatic, timeless-sounding soul shuffle of 'Moonlight', the rushing disco-pop surge of 'Happy Now' and the simmering, lovelorn brilliance of 'I Wish You Roses'.

Review: Following the more contemporary r&b, neo-soul and psychedelic funk flavours of 2023's Red Moon in Venus, a set in which she sung almost entirely in English, Colombian American artist Kali Uchis has decided to return to her roots on fourth full-length Orquideas. That not only means vocals in Spanish, but also a varied sound palette that draws on a wide variety of Colombian and wider Latin musical styles - think reggaeton, demblow, bolero, salsa, Brazilian MPB and bossa-nova. It's a superb, expansive and evocative set all told, with a fine supporting cast of high-profile guest performers including Karol G, Peso Pluma, El Alfa and JT.

Review: Kali Uchis is a globally renowned Columbian r&b and pop songstress who first rose to fame due to her frequent collaborations with alternative hip-hop wunderkind Tyler, the Creator. She has dropped a few great records ever since that bring her unique cultural heritage to r&b and result in hooky tunes, feel good grooves and plenty of great songwriting moments. Her critically acclaimed Red Moon In Venus LP from last year now gets followed up by the lush crooner here. Her Latino-heritage imbued compositions make for a second Spanish-language album, following 2020's Sin Miedo (del Amor y Otros Demonios), which is well worth hearing.

Review: Japanese artist Kimiko Kasai is a revered vocalist who worked in the world of jazz throughout the eighties. Her unique style made her an in-demand collaborator who worked with the likes of Mal Waldron, Gil Evans and Herbie Hancock. She released a total of 23 albums on majors including EMI which is where, in 1987, she dropped this full-length of electro-pop Japanese works. Perigo A Noite features a collection of songs all written by the lady herself and many of them have an adult and exotic style that blends pop, funk and soul with her signature jazz.

Review: A concept album in the truest sense, not that you'd necessarily assume that from the outset, Kate NV has quite literally thrown her toys out of the pram for this one. Taking the bits and pieces, sounds and sonics from her 2020 album, Room For The Moon, Wow feels like she might have scattered the parts on the carpet like an eager child emptying a chest of fun they've not opened in years, then started to see what might be made anew from those once-familiar elements.

Fittingly, the result of that approach is very, very fun, but also pretty serious. There's plenty of innovation at work here - leftfield, alternative electronica messing around with assumptions we make about structure and order, at times almost sounding like a cut and paste project. In other moments, we step from staccato rhythms and percussion into rich brass movements. Quite unlike a lot you'll buy this week.

Their mix of Japanese and British aesthetics - and even vocals in both languages - on this aptly named Intro made them the toast of the hyperpop scene and quickly leaked out to the mainstream, setting the ball rolling to where they are today, with over 500 million streams & video views under their respective belts. As well as a clutch of tracks not available on the vinyl, this CD version also features a generous dollop of bonus remixes.

Review: Despite their obvious love of Japanese culture, Kero Kero Bonito were formed in Bromley, South London, although vocalist Sarah Midori Perry is pretty adept at switching from English to Japanese with her half rapping, half sung style. Intro Bonito was first released in 2013 in mixtape form and introduced the trio - Perry plus multi-instrumentalists Gus Lobban and Jamie Bulled - to the world. Influenced by JPop and 8bit computer game theme music as well as hip-hop and electronica, theirs is a rich and wonderful aesthetic with a challenging, Marmite effect, but whether you like it or loathe it, the songwriting is so strong and original you'll almost certainly find yourself singing it sometime next week.

Review: Kids See Ghosts's self titled debut album in 2018 was the official coming together of American hip hop icons Kanye West and Kid Cudi. They had previously worked on each others work since 2008 but often "experienced personal quarrels due to creative differences." The album got plenty of high praise and made many a year end list mainly because of the chemistry between the two artists. Lyrically, West touches on plenty of the mental health issues he has suffered over the years and production wise, the sound is fragmented hip hop beats of the sort the pair pioneered in proceeding years. This limited edition reissue comes on clear blue vinyl.

It's a psychedelic piece of pop art with infectious hooks and industrial beats that muses on the issues of identity, status, and race. The production is often maximalist in a fun 80s fashion with ice-cold staccato raps, self-assured bars and playful elements that keep you locked. This first pressing comes on special transparent blue vinyl via Diggers Factory.

Review: Few could argue with Liverpool's claims as a city in possessions of one of Europe's most enduring musical legacies, but sometimes this can work against a town once the smoke clears and hysteria subsides. Suffice to say, many of Merseyside's biggest and best loved names have either long since hung up their instruments or faded into heritage territory, but every once in a while you're reminded how fertile the place is right now.

King Hannah have been a long time coming. Founding members Hannah Merrick and Craig Whittle long dreamt of forming a proper band, both having musical stories to tell long before opting to work together. We're very glad they did, with the results this dark, brooding, sexy, sophisticated, gritty interpretation of rock. Hypnotic, groovy, delicate in all the right places but with enough bite to take your head clean off without a second thought. As this double package containing debut EP and album proves.

It was first put out over a decade ago in 2012 and remains a cult favourite amongst fans who appreciate the realness and the rawness of the recordings as well as hearing the slightly different takes on a number of well known songs of hers. Review: Given that their last album was released way back in 2009, many thought we'd never hear from Kings of Convenience again. Yet here we are, bathing in the gentle beauty of Peace Or Love, the Norwegian duo's surprise sixth studio album. It's a formidably enjoyable affair that's as easy-going and gently sun-kissed as any of their previous excursions, with the duo adding quietly soulful, soft-focus vocals to tactile and pin-bright backing tracks that combine folksy acoustic guitars, twinkling pianos and lilting strings with shuffling rhythms that variously doff a cap to bossa-nova, samba, classic pop and French chanson. It's not difficult or challenging in any way, but given the state of the world right now, we're more than happy to settle for cheery, soft-focus beauty.

Review: There was never any doubt back in 2001 that Kings of Convenience had real talent. The Norwegian folk-pop duo made no secret of their remit when they unveiled their debut album, which comes with a truly appropriate, spoiler-alert-worthy title. Erlend Oye and Eirik Glambek Boe are so soft and gentile, in fact, that the main criticism here is arguably the ease with which Quiet Is the New Loud can float calmly into the background of a situation.

Commit your full attention, though, and you realise what a triumph it was. And still is. Inspired by the likes of Simon & Garfunkel, Belle & Sebastian, and Elliott Smith, this record became something of a centrepiece for an entire musical movement (see also: Turin Brakes) which even borrowed the name. Dive into the catalyst again, then. We promise you won't regret it.

Review: Erland Oye and Eirik Grambek Boe have a lengthy history together. Long before they formed Kings of Convenience the pair were in the same class at school, writing comedic raps about their teacher then founding Skog ("forest"), their first joint stab at 'serious' music. Today, the duo have a string of gold and silver certified albums behind them. This is one. Originally released in 2009, 15 years on Declaration of Dependence still sounds as calmly breathtaking as it did back then. Quiet, soft, gentile, yet anything but twee, the sound straddles the line between indie pop and indie folk, and also represented the start of a new era in music distribution - getting its initial release as an exclusive for subscribers of a certain streaming platform, but that's another story.

Review: Given that he's been delivering DIY releases as Kitchen Cynics since the late 1980s, it can be to know where to start with Alan Davidson's vast back catalogue. Happily, the Trilogy Tapes has come up with a solution: Beads Upon an Abacus, a career retrospective compiled by Jack Murphy that offers an excellent introduction to the Aberdeen-based artist's distinctive work. It's well worth checking, too, because Davidson's trademark style -a lo-fi and hissing blend of rudimentary electronics, hazy folk revivalism, layered guitar-scapes and oddly traditional instrument choices - is never less than invigorating, alluring and hugely entertaining. If you've yet to bathe in his unique musical explorations, don't sleep on this fine compilation.

Review: Les Abranis are a pioneering Algerian band known for having mixed up traditional Berber music with Western rock, folk, disco and funk. At the same time they never lost sight of their Kabyle heritage and as such really made a mark on the Maghrebi music scene all across the world from Algeria to France. This new collection Amazigh Freedom Rock 1973-1983 comes five years after Chenar le Blues/Avehri and is a deep dive into the band's discography. It spans everything from their early garage-rock experimentations to lush orchestrations and North African fusion gems from the 1980s.

Review: Red House Painters' founder turned-rightly-celebrated solo troubadour Mark Kozelek presents the latest album in his prolific back catalogue, and it's as consistent as ever. Teaming up with violinist and singer Petra Haden for the pair's first joint recording, the seven tracks presented here are as musically accomplished and lyrically evocative as you would hope. From the hypnotic pianos and largely-spoken word delivery of woozy opener "Parakeet Prison", to the (more than likely) biographical (and hilariously titled) "1983 Era MTV Music Is The Soundtrack to Outcasts Being Bullied by Jocks", and its sultry, jazz-inflections, the songs are as confident and assured as they are delicate enough to break, had those responsible been remotely heavy handed. Needless to say, they weren't, with every note and word carefully considered, played and sung with love and thought.

Review: KU?KA's second album for LUCKYME, Can You Hear Me Dreaming?, showcases over a decade of studio expertise across 12 majestic tracks. Known for her laser-cut electronic production and irresistible pop songwriting, she transcends autobiographical themes to explore a 'Cartoon Brain'. Inspired by surreal creatures, rainy cityscapes, tattoos, and 'cute-ugly' pottery, KU?KA's sonic journey is a personal moodboard. Originating from Western Australia and now based in Los Angeles with roots in Northwest England, Laura Jane Lowther drives KU?KA as a self-sufficient producer, songwriter, and vocalist. Her electrifying debut EP in 2012 paved the way for collaborations with Flume, SOPHIE, Kendrick Lamar, A$AP Rocky, Mount Kimbie, and Vince Staples and this long awaited follow up comes on nice clear wax.

Review: Japanese singer-songwriter Junko Kudo has released just two solo albums and one EP but has many more credits having built up a reputation for her vocals on the works of others including greats like Mimori Yusa amongst others. Her debut full-length Akaneiro No Carnival gets reissued here with an insert and obi-strip 40 years after it first arrived. It features Tetsuya Komuro and Daisuke Hyuga working on the arrangements and performance and is a delightful pop gem with hints of wave and synth-pop all drawing you in while the ephemeral whispering vocals from Kudo blend with melancholic melodies and wistful chords.

Review: A powerhouse combination , Taj Mahal and Ken Mo join forces once again as TajMo and show why fans consider them two of the finest American musicians of their respective generations. Their first collaboration since 2017's TajMo, which won them a Best Contemporary Blues gong at the Grammy Awards, this is journeyman, soul, rock & roll, country and - of course - blues, at its most modern and finest. That said, Room On the Porch is resolutely rooted in the origins of the canons. At times, like the sax-heavy 'Blues'll Give You Back Your Soul', you can almost feel the balmy heat of a night in a Deep South bar and taste the sour mash. 'Rough Time Blues' even comes with the crackle and raw sonic aesthetic of an original early recorded music tome, adding to the sense of authenticity.
